Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This week on the pod I'm joined by Amos Pitsch of the band Dusk, and also of Tenement. We talked about NRBQ's 1972 album, "Scraps"We chat about the history of the band, the definition of power pop and branching out with your songwriting. So, if you're coming here as a big NRBQ fan, then just to note, there's tons we don't know about the history of the band. This chat is really more about our shared experience with discovering NRBQ. Speaking for myself, I'm a pretty new fan, somehow only really digging in over the last three or so years. Right after my chat with Amos I watched this very informative A&E piece on the band that really fills in a lot of holes we both had during our conversation. And if you're pretty new to the band yourself, I'd highly recommend that piece, if just for the hi-jinks the band pulls during it. Another piece worth checking out is Connie Chung's piece on the band from the late 1980s. With all of that said, I had a lot of fun catching up with Amos and really loved his band Dusk's newest album, Glass Pastures. Check it out now on Don Giovanni Records. https://countrydusk.bandcamp.com/album/glass-pasturesSubscribe to our Patreon here: www.patreon.com/spinningoutpodFollow us on social media -- twitter and instagram (@Spinningoutpod)

This week's guest is my new friend Phil Ward aka Lord Warddd. We chatted about the 1984 hip-hop compilation Street Sounds Electro 4. Once again, I've broken my personal rule of covering compilations, but this was too interesting to pass up. Street Sounds Electro 4 isn't available for streaming on Spotify, but you can check out the full compilation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b37WCOv3QWU

Phil talks about how influential this compilation was in his musical journey, and opens my mind about early hip-hop, techno, electro, dance music, as well as Northern Soul. Phil also was in the band, Lo Fidelity Allstars, in the mid to late 90s. They are most known for their 1998 debut album, "How to Operate With a Blown Mind," which featured the song "Battle Flag", featuring Pigeonhed. That song was featured on tv shows such as ER, Sopranos, and films such as, Coyote Ugly, Very Bad Things, Drillbit Taylor and much more.

This week's guest is my good friend Nick Lewis — We talk about Green Day's 1995 album "Insomniac." Nick played in Placeholder, which features current members of Jail Socks, and also currently plays in Alright. When the pandemic ends I look forward to playing music with Nick again, and if we're really lucky, maybe we'll get another Placeholder show!

We both got vaxxed up, so this marks a momentous occasion for the pod, the first in-person episode. No better person to do that with! Nick is a certified Green Day super fan, and I gotta admit I had a lot more fun revisiting this album than I expected.

This week's guest is artist/musician Perry Shall — We talk about Thin Lizzy’s eighth album, "Bad Reputation" from 1977.

We chat a lot about how underrated Thin Lizzy is and it goes without saying how race really played a big role in a lot of that discussion with Phil Lynott. Phil could truly do it all & ten times better than most bands of the era.

Catch Perry every Friday at 6pm ET for his IG series, T-Time. Perry has done art for Green Day, Ceremony, Quest Love, Kurt Vile and so many others. Check out his site for more details: www.perryshall.com

This week's guest is Caleb Cordes of Sinai Vessel.

We talked about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Greatest Hits album from 1993. And when Caleb told me initially about this pick, I thought the same thing as you might be thinking, "THAT'S NOT AN ALBUM." But Caleb came at it with so much passion for it I felt like I needed to hear him out. Also, as a big Petty fan it didn't take much pleading.

We also chat about growing up in the Pentecostal faith in the south and about how we won't join cults or MLM schemes because being involved in independent music has already been enough of a cult we can't pull ourselves from.

Sinai Vessel self-released "Ground Aswim" last year. It's easily their best effort so please check that out. Amazing album! https://sinaivessel.bandcamp.com/album/ground-aswim

This week's guest is Missy of Mannequin Pussy.

Today we're talking about "Fever to Tell" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs (2003). On top of chatting about this amazing album, we chat about my weird hang up with the term "art punk," how the Strokes are actually a really good band, and how it seems like no are artists are really broken anymore by TV. While in the early 2000s, we had Buffy, Dawson's Creek and simply music videos on MTV. Also, is Ridiculousness the only thing on MTV these days?

Today we're talking about "John Wesley Harding" by Bob Dylan (1967). We chat about Dylan's Christian era, which leads to deep dives into JFK conspiracy theories and how that weaves its way into the fabric of everything Bob Dylan, even up into the present. We also chat about having our young minds blown by classic rock, punk, Behind the Music and maybe even the Zapruder film.

This week's guest is novelist, Chris L. Terry. He is the author of Black Card and Zero Fade, two books you should check out right now! He also played in the bands Light the Fuse and Run, as well as Flesh Eating Creeps. To be honest we talk about neither, but had a lovely chat, nonetheless.

Today we are talking about "DONUTS" by J DILLA (2006). It's a record I hadn't spent much time with but really glad I did. We chat about the era of rap/hip-hop and also how "backpack rap" at the time may have caused me to stay away from some really amazing staples. Really great point about how all music doesn't have to be "someone walking and doing backflips and the idea of 'less is more'." Also Chris discusses growing up black in the south in the punk scene that is predominantly white and infatuated with confederate flags in the 90s and early 00s.

This week's guest is musician, Sammi Lanzetta. GET THE EPISODE HERE A FEW DAYS EARLY BEFORE THE 3/1 DROP.

Today we are talking about "TIGER MILK" by BELLE & SEBASTIAN (1996). If you came to this podcast for the comprehensive history of everything Stuart Murdoch, that's not really what we do here, sorry. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/belle-and-sebastian-tigermilk/

We do in fact talk about the feeling of isolation this album invokes and how that relates to Sammi's experience last year living in NYC. We chat a lot about about mental illness, running, and trying to do things in moderation. We also discuss trying to find that passion again with music on your own terms without shows and touring.

Sammi Lanzetta released her album, "Ceiling Mirror," in 2019 on 6131 Records. Lastly, we had slight technical difficulties, but nothing that effects your listening experience. Just a few pops and clicks on zoom among friends. https://sammilanzetta.bandcamp.com/

This week's guest is musician, Michael Bingham.

Today we are talking about "Fresh Fruit For Rotten Vegetables" by Dead Kennedys (1980). We talk about how unique this record is to this day, do younger people still view DK as a band, or is it a boomer symbol of punk. We argue that it is still relevant today. We also discuss court cases and mixing friendships and business relationships. Important to note: We had this conversation before 12/6, so we make no mention of the capitol storming, and so by extension make no mention of DK's embarrassing tweet praising Mitt Romney. Also worth nothing, Jello hasn't been in DK since 1986, so his view's don't reflect the current state of the band.

Michael Bingham is a member of the band Spiritual Cramp, as well as Spice. He previously played in Creative Adult and has been a fixture in the Bay Area scene for a number of years.
