On this episode, we continue our Mustangs Season of Celebration with our 2023 Mustangs Female Athlete of the Year Shona Branton.
In only her second season with the Mustangs Branton had an outstanding year. She came into the OUA Championship looking to make an impact. She finished top of the podium in both the 50m & 100m Breaststroke, she also swam in the 4x50 & 4x100m relays where Western took silver medals, she went to the U SPORTS Championship and picked up a silver medal in the 50m Breaststroke & gold in the 100m Breaststroke.
On this episode, we continue our Mustangs Season of Celebration with our 2023 Mustangs Male Athlete of the Year Treye Trotman.
Trotman went undefeated 24-0 this season and took home six gold medals in six tournaments, outscoring his opponents 156-3 while also winning OUA's and U SPORTS Championships. Trotman was awarded OUA Rookie of the Year, OUA Outstanding Wrestler and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year, alongside 1st Team All-Star and 1st Team All-Canadian honours.
On this episode we continue our Mustangs Season of Celebration by checking in with Daniel Valente Jr. of the Mustangs Football team.
Valente Jr. won the 2023 Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy after an incredible Mustangs career in which he won the Vanier Cup twice, four Yates Cups, a multi time OUA All-Star & U SPORTS All-Canadian and this season was named the OUA's Most Outstanding Standup Defensive Player.
On this episode we continue our Mustangs Season of Celebration by checking in with our major award winners. Karissa Riley of our Women's Rowing team has had one of the most successful seasons in recent memory and captured four different awards at the Mustangs Awards Celebration (Women's Rowing MVP, G. Howard Ferguson Award, Purple Blanket & F.W.P. Jones Trophy).
The humble leader of the Women's Rowing program talks about her journey as a Mustang and what it meant to finish her career with this kind of recognition.
On this episode we are checking in with the teams that took home some hardware from their championship seasons. We had 4 teams win their OUA Championships (Women's Rowing, Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis & Football), Rylie Grogan of the Women's Golf team won the individual gold medal and the Mustangs Ringette team won the University Challenge Cup, a national championship. We caught up with representatives of each team for a few minutes.
The 2022-23 athletic season is well underway and we take a few minutes to check in with a trio of guests. First we get the first edition of "The Directors Report" with Mustangs Director of Sports & Recreation Christine Stapleton to talk about what it has taken to get back to competition this fall, upgrades to our facilities, and how impressed she has been with our teams so far this year.
We check in with Mustangs Football Head Coach Greg Marshall as the defending Vanier Cup Champions have another impressive season underway.
We finish out the episode with Field Hockey Head Coach Jeff Pacheco to discuss his team, and their motivation this year and to learn a bit more about the game he has spent 20+ years leading here at Western.
On this episode, we recognize the 2022 F.W.P. Jones Trophy winner Joan-Shiao Chen & Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy winner Jackson Bere.
Chen is a graduating member of the Mustangs Swimming team who won multiple medals at the OUA Championship this season and has been a veteran leader of the team over her 5 seasons with the Mustangs. Outside of the pool, she has been an active member in multiple on-campus initiatives including being the President of the Mustangs Athlete Student Council (M.A.S.C) this past year on top of a number of other groups and committees.
Bere is graduating from the Men's Volleyball program this season as one of the highest impact players in recent memory. Bere has been an OUA 1st team all-star, an All-Rookie team member, and also spent time during his university career with the Canadian National program, playing internationally.
Both athletes were presented with their awards along with a Mustangs Purple Blanket at the 2022 Mustangs Awards in early April and we are excited to hear more about their incredible careers at Western and what is next in their lives
On this episode we recognize the 2022 Mustangs Female & Male Athletes of the Year, Kate Current and Deionte Knight.
Current won double gold at the U SPORTS Track & Field Championship in the 1500m and 3000m races while also being part of the silver medal winning U SPORTS Cross Country Championship.
Knight was the OUA & U SPORTS Lineman of the Year for the Vanier Cup winning Mustangs football team.
As we celebrate Black History Month, we gathered a group of Mustangs student athletes and alumni to discuss the current landscape of sports. This includes the progress and struggles that have been seen surrounding racism and equality for equity-deserving groups.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day and International Women's Day are annual days to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, recognize the influence of sports participation for women and girls, and honor the progress and continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.
