Peter Attia did a podcast with Tadej Pogačar and posted an interesting thread on Reddit, talking about how Lance Armstrong and Marco Pantani era cyclists were pushing significantly higher VAM numbers on Tour de France climbs. This is completely wrong and not true, which will be discussed in this Watt Police episode.

In this Watt Police episode, we had a special guest, Illi Gardner, a British climbing superstar who has delivered some of the greatest climbing performances ever in women's cycling. Currently, with fresh legs in a mountain time trial, only Demi Vollering might challenge her on a huge climb. Illi also owns the records for Alpe d'Huez, Monte Zoncolan, and many other climbs. She holds the Everesting record (8h:03min), with the second-fastest rider, Emma Pooley, trailing by 50 minutes.

After a horrible day on Stage 5, Pablo Torres did everything he could to win the Tour de l’Avenir GC on Colle delle Finistre, but even the greatest performance of all time by a teenager was not enough to regain all the time lost to Joseph Blackmore on Stage 6. Marion Bunel performed well in Tour de l'Avenir Femmes and won against Isabella Holmgren.

After a magnificent performance in the San Sebastián Classic, Lennert Van Eetvelt came very close to his first Grand Tour stage victory, but in the final metres, Primož Roglič beat him at the line, taking his 13th stage win in Vuelta a España 2024 Stage 4.

This was the greatest Tour de France we have ever seen climbing wise, with riders breaking almost all the possible records and Tadej Pogačar, Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel performing at all-time high levels. Even Mikel Landa, Adam Yates, Joao Almeida, Derek Gee, Matteo Jorgenson, Santiago Buitrago, Carlos Rodriguez, Giulio Ciccone and other riders performed really well and many of them broke their career records.

Tadej Pogačar was better than ever on the Tour de France Stage 14 with UAE Team Emirates pacing hard all day for their leader. Pogačar dropped Jonas Vingegaard on the steep Pla d’Adet gradients, winning his 13th stage in the Tour and extending his already large lead in the general classification.

Jonas Vingegaard beat Tadej Pogačar in the sprint at the end of Tour de France stage 11, winning his fourth Tour stage. His climbing performance on Col du Pertus was one of his greatest despite the hard crash in the Basque Country three months earlier. Vingegaard bridged to Pogačar after the Slovenian distanced him on Puy Mary with an all time great performance. Remco Evenepoel and Primož Roglič was not far from the two GC favourites, losing 25 seconds in the end

Joao Almeida and Adam Yates dominated on Villar Sur Ollon on Tour de Suisse stage 7 and 8, both UAE riders finishing 1-2 on both days and in the overall classification. In the Tour de Suisse Women Demi Vollering won stage 1 and 2 mountain time-trial with Gaia Realini, Elisa Longo Borghini, Kim Cadzow, Urška Žigart and other riders performing at a high level.

With perfect conditions and a competitive environment, almost all the GC riders set their best pure ᵉW/Kg values or close them in the exciting Tour de Suisse stage 6 mountain top finish. Adam Yates pushed 7.19 ᵉW/Kg for 19:31 min, while Joao Almeida with more draft averaged 7.13 ᵉW/Kg. Mattias Skjelmose after an unsuccessful stage yesterday performed better on easy parcour with 7.13 ᵉW/Kg for 19:36 min. All three riders broke the All-Time Top 30 trend line, which has become more like the red Generational trend line as the riders have improved in the last two years and continue to reach new heights. Even Egan Bernal and 10th place finisher Felix Gall broke the red trend line, which 10 years ago in the Sky era even in such perfect conditions was practically impossible.

UAE Emirates with Adam Yates and Joao Almeida performed really well in the first two Tour de Suisse mountain stages. Adam Yates was the fastest climber from the GC group on both days, while Almeida pushed high watts and performed exceptionally. Egan Bernal, Enric Mas, Matthew Riccitello, Mattias Skjelmose, Tom Pidcock and Oscar Onley performed on one or both days.

Tadej Pogačar did a huge performance on Monte Grappa in the 2024 Giro d'Italia Stage 20, winning his sixth Giro stage. The Slovenian destroyed again his GC rivals Geraint Thomas, Dani Martinez, Antonio Tiberi, Ben O'Connor and others.

Pogačar marked the moves in the final two kilometres and did not attack, instead opting to win the bunch sprint at the end. Tadej Pogačar won the Giro d'Italia stage 2 with a strong effort on Santuario di Oropa. The GC group lost 27 seconds with Florian Lipowitz, who pulled a lot, pushing 6.51 ᵉW/Kg. Martinez, Fortunato, and Thomas averaged 6.44 – 6.45 ᵉW/Kg, finishing in the second group.

Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel did an incredible performance on Lo Port in Volta a Catalunya Stage 5 2023. Joao Almeida, Marc Soler, Lenny Martinez, Cian Uijtdebroeks, Mikel Landa, Michael Woods and other closer finishers also did tremendous performances in perfect conditions.
Tadej Pogačar showed impressive performance on Paris-Nice 2023 stage 4, winning the stage and becoming the new race leader, while his rival Jonas Vingegaard lost more than 40 seconds.
2022 Tour de France Champion Jonas Vingegaard and 2020-2021 Le Tour Winner Tadej Pogačar both will ride Paris-Nice and they are in great shape. This race will be must watch. Tobias Foss beat Steffan Kung and Remco Evenepoel to get his first pro win outside of Norway. Jumbo-Visma rider unexpectedly won World Championships 2022 Men's Time-Trial.
Remco Evenepoel finished first on Les Praeres climb from the GC group, breaking Simon Yates' 2018 record. Enric Mas, Juan Ayuso, Carlos Rodriguez, Primož Roglič followed after Evenepoel from GC riders. The stage was won by Louis Meintjes, which was his first World Tour win.
Jay Vine won his second Vuelta a Espana stage, while Remco Evenepoel was the fastest from the GC group with Primož Roglič and Enric Mas. Carlos Rodriguez did his best climbing performance so far.

Annemiek van Vleuten won Tour de France Femmes Avec Zwift Stage 8 2022 and secured the GC win on La Super Planche des Belles Filles, dropping everyone. Demi Vollering finished 30 seconds after Van Vleuten.

Silvia Persico, Elisa Longo Borghini, Urška Žigart, Evita Muzic and Pauliena Rooijakkers also were in the top 10.
Remco Evenepoel did his best under 20+ minute climbing performance in Clásica San Sebastián 2022, winning the race for the 2nd time. The young Belgian dropped everyone on the Erlaitz climb with 46km to go. Pavel Sivakov finished 2nd, Tiesj Benoot 3rd, Bauke Mollema 4th, Carlos Rodriguez 5th, Simon Yates 6th, Toms Skujiņš 7th, Mattias Skjelmose Jensen 8th, Rigoberto Uran 9th, Lorenzo Rota 10th.
Jonas Vingegaard continued to show his impressive form on the final mountain day of an enthralling edition of the Tour de France. Stage 18 finished with the legendary Hautacam climb where Jonas Vingegaard took a big leap towards the overall victory by putting more than a minute into Tadej Pogačar. The Dane did not break his compatriot Bjarne Riis’ record time (34:41) but still did the fastest climbing time since Lance Armstrong in 2000.

Brandon McNulty shocked the cycling world in Tour de France Stage 17, doing one of the best climbing performances this year, dropping almost every GC contender on Col d’Azet except his teammate Tadej Pogačar and crucially the race leader Jonas Vingegaard.

Chris Froome is back. Froome finished 3rd in Tour de France stage 12 that finished on Alpe d'Huez. Froome beat multiple high level climbers from the breakaway and proved he still is competitive. Tom Pidcock became the youngest rider ever to win on Alpe d'Huez. Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar, Enric Mas, Sepp Kuss and Geraint Thomas finished together. They climbed Alpe d'Huez in 39 minutes and 12 seconds, which is the fastest time since 2006.
Jonas Vingegaard cooked Tadej Pogačar on Col du Granon, taking a spectacular victory on Col du Granon. Vingegaard broke Greg LeMond and Urs Zimmermann record by more than 5 minutes, producing world-class w/kg at high altitude.

Wout Van Aert made a big mistake at the end of the Criterium du Dauphine stage 3, celebrating too early. David Gaudu at the last moment surprised him and won the stage. Jumbo-Visma with Jonas Vingegaard and Primož Roglič worked hard for Van Aert in the final kilometres but the Belgian let down his teammates. Chris Froome finished 35th, losing 31 seconds to Gaudu, which shows he is improving. Giro d'Italia stage 16 was the most difficult day for the climbers so far in this Giro. The stage was one by Czech climber Jan Hirt, who outclimbed on the steep Santa Cristina climb Thymen Arensman, taking a big win from a breakaway. Meanwhile in the GC group Mikel Landa, Jai Hindley and Richard Carapaz all finished together. They all broke Santa Cristina's record, improving Marco Pantani's time from the 1994 Giro by 9 seconds.
