Her daughter touched her neck and asked, "Mommy, why did daddy hurt your neck?" She decided that this would not be a part of her children's story. Stacy Barnes was a devout Christian who became pregnant out of wedlock. Instead of her church members helping to restore her to the fellowship, she became the object of gossip, no one talked to her, and she felt ashamed that she had destroyed her Christian witness. Yet, hoping to move on, she married the child's father. After they married, his abusive tendencies revealed themselves. Eventually, she divorced, but during this tumultuous time, she went on a journey to restore her relationship with God. When she married a second time, it was right. Stacy wrote the book Damage Goods: A Devotional for the Slightly Imperfect to share her testimony of how God restored her and hopes that others who have had similar experiences will see how God can restore them to a right relationship with Him.
Laying at the bottom of the stairs, her daughter asked, “Mommy, are you okay?” Knowing she was not okay, she sought to reassure her daughter that everything was fine, but everything was not fine. After falling down the stairs, she sustained a back injury and developed CRPS. The pain was crippling, leaving her bedridden. Then, miraculously she started recovering. She went from being bedridden to a wheelchair to walking again. However, nine years later due to an accident with a falling chair, her journey would start again. At the age of seven, his father asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. Gregory Williams prophetically responded that he wanted to be a sheepherder. At thirteen, he knew he had a call to the ministry and later entered seminary only to realize that the truth he had known was not the truth, leaving him with many questions. His teachers said he would never amount to anything. After her counselor listened to her sob story, she expected her to hand her a kleenex, pat her on the back, and engage with her feelings of defeat. Instead, the counselor looked at her and said, "Megan, you know that motherhood is not your highest calling." Blinded-sided by the counselor's response, Megan Nilsen could not initially understand what the counselor meant because motherhood was all she was doing. Then, the counselor went on to explain that her truest and highest calling is as a child of God and that she needed to anchor her identity there first.
Sue Corl's life was riddled with hardship from birth. Born with a severe cleft palate, no nose, upper lip, or upper palate, along with severe breathing issues, her concept of beauty was shaped by hurtful words. In episode two of our three-part series with Darla Colinet, she shares how her books and courses are helping others overcome the cyclic nature of abusive marriages. Even if an individual is unable to escape the marriage, she describes how she has helped the abused create a safe space in their home. Knowing that we can still say no and set boundaries is the start of creating healthier relationships, but first, the abused must reform their mind about what is and is not appropriate in the relationship. One question an individual can ask themselves is whether they would allow the abusive actions toward Jesus because what is done to them is done to Him.

In the end, it was all worth it to see her daughter's success. Now, she wants to help others as God so graciously helped her.
Her teacher’s words left a hole in her heart, and the hole became bigger as others reiterated that damaging message, stripping her layer by layer until she found the strength to say no more. The moment she found her strength, she started to glow, and as she glowed, God purposed her with helping others glow. Now, she helps others dig for the gold inside of them.
