Safest Family on the Block: Recent Episodes

Jason Wayne Brick

Safest Family on the Block is what happens when a 6th degree black belt, journalist, and father of two spends too much time talking with experts about how to keep our families safe. What kinds of experts? Well, for example, a Paramedic Captain about preventing child injuries, a suicide counselor on early warning signs, a defense investigator on how criminals choose victims, a school administrator and retired marine on school safety, and lots, lots more.

The Miss Poppins App helps solve that. Nicky Rishi has assembled a team of world-class parenting experts, and a community of engaged parents, to help each other when we need it most.

Today she tells us all about it: why Miss Poppins exists, how it happened, what it does, and how you can get involved.

Financial literacy isn't just good sense -- it's a form of safety. Without financial knowledge, our families are more vulnerable in emergencies. Everything from a reliable car to a well-stocked emergency kit plays right into safety...to say nothing of how financial stress can shorten our lifespans and harm our relationships.

Brian page, founder of Modern Husbands teaches thousands of parents around the world about financial literacy, and how to teach our kids to be financially literate as young adults. He shares his knowledge and techniques in this valuable conversation.

The thing about martial arts training for kids and adults is that the most important lessons have nothing to do with kicking and punching. It's a way of building character traits and teaching habits of health and safety that very few other experiences can match.

Dickson Kunz has been training and teaching in martial arts for decades, and shares his perspective about martial arts and protecting our family: what works, what's imaginary, and how we can best help our kids learn these important skills.

The world is getting hotter, which means our families are at more risk of heat stroke, heat exhaustion, dehydration, and even sunburn. Whether we're planning for a trip to warm climates, trying to make it through a summer at home, or battening down the hatches for a heat wave with a side order of power outages, the right skills and mindset can save a life.

Melonie Kennedy is a full-circle safety instructor with experience in emergency prep, who lives in the desert. She has direct, personal experience with this exact kind of emergency. She speaks with us about it today.

If you look at the over 100 interviews with safety experts on this channel, you’ll see a lot of first responders and related professionals. Firefighters, paramedics, police, ER staff, security personnel…all of those people who are, as the name implies, the first to show up when things go wrong.

These are varied fields with people coming to them from widely varied backgrounds, but they all have at least one thing in common:

They hate it when children get hurt.

When I interview a member of the three disciplines, I ask them each the same question: what do you wish parents knew, so you could see their children professionally less often?

Although each gives different answers, their lists often intersected. Here are the top ten most common things first responders wish parents knew.

In this video, we look at the top 5 ways to avoid potential burglars and home invaders thinking you have a lot worth stealing in your home. In a previous video (link in the comments below), we covered 5 ways to make your home look harder to get away with breaking into.

I don’t talk much about property crimes in these videos. Property crime is different from violent crime. It’s not part of my mission here, and it is part of the mission for several great channels hosted by people who know more than I do about those things.

However, home invasions can be among the most dealy and traumatic crimes imaginable, and even a simple burglar can become dangerous if cornered.

Like any other hazard, the best way to stay safe is to avoid the situation entirely. So we’ll focus on the second method: the top 5 ways to make your home look like an unattractive target.

I don’t talk much about property crimes in these videos for two reasons. First, this channel is about safety. I’m happy to lose every penny I have, every toy and bauble in my home, if it means my family is safe. Second, there are experts at preventing property crime who have great channels of their own.

That said, making our homes harder targets isn’t just about property crime. Home invasions can be among the most dealy and traumatic crimes imaginable, and even a simple burglar can become dangerous if cornered.

Like any other hazard, the best way to stay safe is to avoid the situation entirely. In this case, it’s to make your home less attractive to potential thieves. Experts know you can do this in one of two ways: you can make it look like there’s not much worth stealing inside, and you can make it look like it’s harder to get away with stealing what’s in there.

In today’s video, we’ll focus on the second method: the top 5 ways to make your home look like it’s hard to get away with robbing.

From the adorable pronouncements of toddlers, to wise insights from our adult children, talking with our kids can be an absolute joy….or a total horrorshow. Every parent remembers a day when our three-year-old wouldn’t stop crying, our middle schooler gave us a three-day silent treatment, or we screwed up when talking with a teen about coming home three hours after curfew.

Communication is one of the most important safety skills we can learn and apply as parents, because communication is how we learn about many dangers, and how we teach our kids how to avoid or overcome them. It’s an art and a science some people spend entire professional lifetimes beginning to understand.

We can go wide and deep into this topic, but today I want to share 5 simple communication techniques so powerful they’re basically Jedi Mind tricks. They’re easy to learn, not that hard to use, and can make a surprising difference starting right now.

I'm not here to debate gun rights. You have your opinion and I have mine, and I assume you're earned yours as much as I have.

But it's not an opinion that there are a lot of myths out there when it comes to defending yourself with a firearm. That's a cold, hard, and sometimes deadly fact.

Today, we talk with Rich Hill of Freedom Martial Arts. He's a 2A advocate, firearms instructor, black belt, and protector who makes his living dispelling these myths.

Whether you own a gun, are considering arming yourself, or hope to avoid guns altogether, you owe it to yourself to hear what he has to say.

I've been training in martial arts for 40 years, and if you ask me what art a child should take, I'll probably tell you parkour. It teaches all the movement, courage, confidence, and power of martial arts without the moral burden of violence.

In today's show, I speak with Molly Courtney, a parkour expert and owner of The Movement Park in Hillsboro, Oregon. We discuss the importance of fitness in safety generally, and how parkour skills specifically can save a life.

Travel makes us better, broader, happier people, and it does the same for our kids. But travel can also be dangerous...and even when it's not dangerous, worry about danger can make us go fewer places and have less fun.

Gary Quesenberry, a frequent guest on our show and author of multiple safety books, got travel safety training from the US Marshall service. He later applied that training to travel with his children. He shares what he learned with us today, so we can go out far and wide with our kids safely and with less fear.

Here's the thing.

For today's very special episode of Safest Family on the Block, we talk about talking about sex. All of the data and research say that we get fewer pregnancies, less sexually transmitted infection, lower rates of teen sex, and even lower rates of rape and domestic abuse if we have frank, honest, comprehensive sex education and sex talks with our kids.

That can be a tough proposition. Some political narratives and religious communities even say we shouldn't do it...but that doesn't change the facts.

Today, Liza Draper, a veteran sex educator, comes on the show to talk with us about what we need our kids to know, and some of the best ways to make sure they know them.

Water safety isn't as exciting as crime prevention, but comes up more often. Drownings are a tragedy that strike more families each year than violence, and are easier to prevent with a little training.

Jewel Young hosts the Young Dads podcast, but before that he was a lifeguard and water safety instructor for many years. He talks to us today about the things parents can do at the pool, on the river, by the ocean, and anywhere else water and kids interact.

Mish Handwerker and I have been studying martial arts for a total of nearly 80 years. During that journey we discovered the most important safety lessons weren't about kicking, punching, stabbing, and such.

Today we talk about those lessons, why they're important, and how best we and our children can learn them.

Car seats are tricky. We all need one during that first decade of a child's life. We all rode in one at one point or another. We figure we know how to use them...but that's rarely the case.

Modern car seats are incredibly well-engineered tools built to protect our children, but like most specialized tools they aren't intuitive to use.

Juliana Amador is a licensed car seat safety technician with a mission to make sure we all know the best way to use these life-saving devices. She was kind enough to share her knowledge with us.

"Parents don't have needs. They have responsibilities, and a list of things they hope happen."

I used to think that way. I used to believe it deeply, and make it a key part of my parenting identity. To the point of exhaustion, gaining 25 pounds, and nearly losing my career. AND to the point of being a worse father than I was capable of being.

Today's conversation is with Ron Cecil and Daniel Penner of the Cutting for Sign podcast, a show dedicated to helping men create and live their best version of themselves.

Emergency preparedness is part of safety. Whether or not the Big One is coming, every family is likely to experience a power outage, weather emergency, or other event.

The trouble is that much of the prepping community is...let's say overly enthusiastic and a little intimidating.

Erika Friday of Ready, Set, Moms has built her practice about turning the complex, intimidating parts of parenthood into easy systems that take the guesswork and fear out of what we do. Her course on emergency preparedness launces this week.

Many security-minded parents spend their pre-parenting days picking up physical self-defense skills as a combination of hobby and job...but having a child changes that entire perspective.

Joe Borovicka and I share that background, and are doing a lot of the same things with it later in our lives. In this conversation, we nerd out deeply and broadly on safety, self-defense, and how we can learn, apply, and re-discover the most important skills to keep our families safe.

There are an average of 198,000 trips to the emergency room and over 20 deaths each year from children's toys. That's more hospital visits than we get from stranger danger and fires combined, and a topic we don't talk about nearly enough.

WATCH (World Against Toys Causing Harm) talks about it all year, and their own Joan Siff came aboard to talk with us about it: what toys cause harm, how we can learn what they are, and what we can do about it.

Not the most cheerful or exciting child safety topic, I know, but one we should all pay close attention to.

Bullying and cyberbullying are two of the most talked about and feared aspects of real life for school-aged children. They lead to poor performance, school absenteeism, anxiety, depression, even suicide. Far from a rite of passage or an important part of growing up, bullying is something we adults should do all we can to help our kids avoid, or at least overcome.

Kevin Daniels of BullyDefense101 talks with us today about strategies for adults and children to prevent bullying. Join us for the conversation.

I don't usually do financial self-defense on my channel. I'm not here to save your money: I'm here to save your kids. Plenty of people are more passionate and informed on that topic than I am.

But sometimes -- often -- our finances determine how well we can keep our family safe. Jason Hoschouer is a police officer turned financial coach, so his perspectives on both money and safety are uniquely fine-tuned. Parents know, but rarely admit, how much hardship there is in between the moments of pure joy that come with parenting...but it is hard, and that hardness can create serious safety issues especially for new parents.

Those big trucks you drive by on the highway are carrying thousands of tons at over 60 MPH. Driving them is not the same as driving a car, or even the biggest SUV you can manage. Driving around them isn't the same either, a fact that causes hundreds of traffic fatalities every year.

Jeremy Howden has spent his life protecting people, and these days keeps our supply lines working as a long-haul trucker. He joins us today to help us learn how to best stay safe when on the road with that ubiquitous staple of the American freeway.

Humans are bad at assessing risk that isn't happening to them in that instant. We're great at figuring out if we're in danger _right now_, but when it comes to theoretical problems we have real issues.

Filippo Marino spent his early life in high-risk military, security, and anti-crime adventures. He has since settled down and created a resource for professionals and civilians, which helps us accurately gauge where it's safe to travel, and where it's less safe...and what to do about those risks.

He talks to us about decision making and risk assessment for parents, so we can better keep our kids safe from the real dangers while not worrying so much about the stuff that's unlikely.

When we deal with safety issues, fear is a big problem. Whether we're responding to a kid's poor grades or seeing a bad guy approach in a parking garage, unmanaged fear can weaken us, push bad decisions, and make the situation less safe than it would be without it.

Fortunately, Tony Blauer has built a career, even a mission, on teaching people who to manage, control, and channel fear under the most stressful conditions imaginable. Here's what he had to say to us.

Self defense is different for women than it is for men. The context is different. The bodies are different. The best advice is different. That's why I trust women more than I do men when it comes to women's self-defense.

And that's why we talk with Nia Hartsfield of Hard Candy today. She believes women can be safe _and_ sexy, armed _and_ amorous. She has lots to say, and I'm glad she took the time to say it to us.

What do violence professionals know that amateurs and martial artists don't?

Way too much. Training at the average dojo is at such a remove from what happens in real physical conflict, and many martial arts teachers don't fully realize that.

Aging affects all parent protectors, in two different ways.

First, we become increasingly responsible for our parents' safety, which is an adjustment many of us find tricky to manage.

Second, as we get older, we find our capacity for physical protection gets lower. This is also hard to admit, and even harder to handle.

Dave McNeill, a martial artist and protector of many decades experience, shares his insights into both of these.

It's very hard to overstate how thrilled I am to have Grandmaster Bob White on the show for this episode. He's one of the world's foremost teachers of the martial art where I make my home, Kenpo Karate. In his career, he has taught tens of thousands of kids and adults how to be safer, more effective, kinder people than they would have been without his influence. He and his wife remain leaders by example in the martial arts community.

We talk today about how sports in general, and martial arts in particular, can be uniquely empowering for our kids. He's preaching to the choir for me, but all of us can benefit from what he has to say.

By the end, you'll fully understand one of Bob's key points: "Martial arts for kids I can take or leave, but spending time with martial artists is irreplacable".

In today's interview, we tackle the tricky topic of behavior and discipline. We know, because of science, that the old school method of threats and consequences doesn't build better behavior, or a trusting relationship between us and our kids...but that doesn't mean we let them run wild, either.

Robbin McManne is one of the best-respected parenting coaches in the world, having tested what she learned getting a related degree in the crucible of parenting children with special needs. She brings us the most amazing tools and techniques for getting the behavior we need without resorting to yelling, threats, and other forms of bullying.

The problem with about half the martial arts teachers in the world is that they're training and teaching for the wrong reasons.

No...that's not entirely fair. They're training and teaching for reasons that don't mesh well with the needs of parents. They're in it for the sport, or for warrior fantasies, or some other goal that doesn't fit with the intelligent self-defense and protective strategies you need when you're responsible for children.

Sifu Alan Baker is part of the other half. He's widely trained, highly experienced, and _gets it_. We had a great conversation about what self-defense really looks like when you have the responsibilities of a parent, and what you and I can do today to become safer people and more effective protectors.

John & John of Shield Protection Products have spent their careers in law enforcement, where they've seen what happens when armed defenders come into contact with resolute bad guys. They started a shop where they sell not just gear, but training, too.

They're one of our show's first sponsors, and highly knowledgeable about what to carry, when, and why...and how to use it if you ever need to.

As we get older, our parenting responsibilities often shift from watching just our kids to also watching our own parents. Sometimes that responsibility includes helping them understand they need to move into a senior community, and helping them navigate that move.

This can be a hard decision to make, and even harder to implement. Luckily, we found Beth Pratt. Beth has worked in the industry for her entire career. She knows the good, the bad, and the ugly of what goes on, and she shares it with us today.

One thing I dislike about too many martial arts books is how much they focus on...well...martial arts. The truth is, details of technique for punching, kicking, stabbing, shooting, choking, and avoiding all of those things when they're aimed at you are the least important aspects of self-defense.

David Kahn is one of the world's leading experts on the martial art Krav Maga, which has a somewhat deserved reputation of being one of the worst offenders in that category....but David, and his new book recently published by YMAA, are different.

My conversation with David included a little bit of martial arts geekery, but focused mainly on the techniques, mindset, and knowledge we need as parents to avoid ever having to use martial arts.

Which is what the goal should be in the first place.

Food allergies, including life-threatening intolerances, impact 1 in 13 children in the developed world. This means there are 2 impacted children in every classroom.

Whether your child has a food allergy or intolerance, or you want to be helpful to your child's classmates or friends, it's important to know the realities and best practices surrounding this issue.

Allergy Amulet has invented an impressive device that can detect even trace amounts of common allergens. Their star Meg Nohe came on to talk about the device, and about allergy safety in general.

It was a great conversation with a smart, knowledgeable person for whom food allergies aren't just a calling -- they're personal.

It's likely that having a child suffering from a serious addiction is one of the few things that can hurt and scare parents nearly as much as losing a child altogether. An addicted child feels like a different person, and assaults the core of how we feel about having done our core job.

But addiction is a complex situation, one our society is only just now beginning to look at from a compassionate, realistic, science-driven perspective. It's hard to know what to do to help prevent a child from going down that dark road, and even harder to know what to do if they're already on it.

Ed Kressy struggled for years with addiction, and psychotic breaks caused by that addiction (or maybe it was vice versa). Since he quit drugs, he has worked tirelessly with individuals, organizations, and law enforcement to help others find the tools they need to enter recovery. He is probably the only man on earth to have both been arrested by the FBI, and to have been given an award by them.

In today's episode, we talk about his journey, and the most important things he learned from it that we as parents, and our adult children, can use to help avoid or survive this potentially tragic life risk.

For a child, trauma can mean the death of friend, divorcing parents, extensive bullying, or even failing a test. The "worthiness" of the upset isn't important -- it's how upset our child is, and how well we help them manage the stress, anxiety, and grief from that trauma.

Dianne Maroney has worked with children throughout her career, and especially focused on helping parents without mental health backgrounds become powerful and empowering resources for their kids. Her Image Project is a set of exercises and workbooks that help children acknowledge difficult feelings without letting them control their lives.

She was kind enough to come on the show today to tell us about the Imagine Project in particular, and helping children through trauma in general. It was an enlightening conversation I'm sure you will find helpful.

One thing that drives me up the wall (even though I was equally guilty in my misspent youth) is people who train for the fight without ever paying attention to how to avoid the fight in the first place.

The truth is, especially for parents, avoiding any kind of fight is the safest, best choice. Beverly Baker is a martial artists and violence dynamics expert who has spent her life being safe in unsafe places. Through her company Asphalt Anthropology, she teaches the awareness, movement, analysis, and de-escalation skills that help make dense, urban environments safer for families and individuals.

We were lucky to get her on the show, and the conversation was among the most enlightening I've had.

You can take all the self-defense classes you want, but if you don't have a defensive mindset they won't do you much good. Defensive mindset includes factors like situational awareness, thinking about how you might respond in a given situation, giving yourself permission to use self-defense skills, and similar mental conditioning that helps you move more safely in a dangerous world.

Through her Diamond Arrow Group, Kelly Sayre teaching these things all over the world to women, families, organizations, and businesses. In this conversation, we talk about the best ways simple parents like us can apply these important, if sometimes intimidating, concepts in our daily lives.

One of the biggest ironies of self-defense is: the more you prepare, the less likely you are to have to use it. With Kelly's help, we can all be more prepared.

Popular demand (and the fact it makes sense) has led me to start including episodes on elder care and other aspects of keeping a multigenerational family safe. Many of us are in a position to manage the needs of our kids and our parents for travel, events, or life in general.

In today's episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Robert Chuckrow, one of the foremost Tai Chi practitioners in North America and a physics Ph.D. He's an expert at living a healthy, active life into your eighties and longer.

We discuss general wellness, balance, falling, and other aspects of staying healthy and active, and the good doctor shows us several exercises we can start doing today.

A bug-out-bag is a set of supplies you keep nearby so you have the tools to survive in an emergency. Their main job is to get you from where you are, back to home if you're caught out in the world -- or to get you from your home to a safe place if you need to evacuate.

Here's the thing about bug-out-bags. You probably won't need to grab yours and light out into a postapocalyptic wasteland with your family. But if yours is ready for that, you'll be golden if your car gets two flats at the same time, or if a weather emergency forces your neighborhood to evacuate.

Josh Burmeister is a former Navy SERE trainer, and has spent the latter half of his career teaching civilians and industrial clients about preparing for emergencies. In this extra-long conversation, he discusses why my bag is different from yours, and both of ours are different from his, then provides suggestions and priorities for building our perfect individual bags for each family member.

Sometimes the difference between an inconvenience and an emergency (or an emergency and a tragedy) is having the right gear at the right time. We've already talked about first aid kits, fire safety gear, and car emergency kits. Next week we'll do an interview about bug-out bags.

But some of the best gear isn't physical. It's software. Life 360 is one of those apps, offering location safety, driving safety, and digital safety tools right on your phone, and every phone in the family.

Ariana Hellebuyck helps get the word out about Life360, and chatted with us today about what their app does, why it's important, and how we can make our families safer with or without this particular piece of technology. Join us for a great conversation.

Sex abuse is an issue we've tackled before here at Safest Family on the Block, but it's so important this won't be the last episode where we discuss it. Child sex abuse can come from a variety of corners, and has lasting psychological, emotional, social, and physical impact no matter what age it happens at.

Allie Neal's organization, Revved Up Kids, teaches children the tools they need to combat sexual abuse even at the youngest ages. It starts with naming the parts of the body even with toddlers to model and encourage frank, open conversation. From there, it's about building trust and giving confidence so they will stop a predator in their tracks, then feel safe telling you about it.

There's so much more to it, and Allie explains it eloquently in our talk today.

There are no universal self defense instructors. We've had a lot of experts on the channel, but Spencer won't pretend to be a fire prevention specialist, Rita won't pretend to know about knife fighting, and Jim doesn't speak up about surviving domestic abuse.

This includes me. SFOTB is a full-circle program, and some of my experiences putting this together have broadened my knowledge base extensively. But even if I was a legitimate universal self defense expert, I would really only be an expert in self defense for large, athletic men with children who live in suburban North America.

That's why I'm so happy to have Teja Van Wicklen on the show. She's a martial artist with a background very similar to my own, but she's also physically, socially, and experientially very different from me.

Our conversation focuses on self-defense for women, especially the differences in how I approach self-defense to how she does, but along the way we find a few important commonalities.

One of the most common themes throughout virtually every episode of this show has been the importance of paying attention: what the professionals call Situational Awareness. It's how you see the bad guy in the parking lot, brake in time when traffic slows, and notice a change in your child's behavior that suggests they might be having trouble.

Gary Quesenberry's career meant that people got hurt if his situational awareness wasn't up to snuff. In his civilian life, he's taking the lessons he learned in those high-stakes environments and teaching us how to apply them to parenting and to life.

Join us for a great conversation including the three stages of awareness, habits we can start today, and the best ways to talk with our kids to build their awareness early without making them fearful.

Safety and Security are not the same things. When you're safe, you aren't in danger. When you're secure, you don't think you're in danger. That leads to four potential states for any part of our lives:

• Safe and Secure: we are safe and we feel safe, like my kids feel when they're at home, behind a locked door, reading a book with their black belt dad
•Safe, but not secure: being safe, but not feeling safe, like a child in bed afraid of a monster in the closet
•Secure, but not safe: feeling safe even though you're not, for example driving while drunk
•Neither safe nor secure: not safe, and knowing you're not safe, like when you realize you're being followed

Of those four states, the most dangerous is when you're secure, but not safe. That's when we're most vulnerable, and unfortunately a state parents spend too much time in.

Spencer Coursen has spent his life as a protector. First as a big brother, then in the army, then in a long career of executive protection. His book "The Safety Trap" explores the most common places where people are secure, but not safe, and gives simple, important, and practicable advice on how to avoid those situations.

Spencer and I put together a two-part interview where we discuss the ten most common safety misconceptions, the truth behind them, and how to disarm those particular safety traps for ourselves and our famlies.

Join us for an enlightening conversation, then hop over to Spencer's podcast "Coursen's Corner" for Part Two.

It's possible that a school shooting is the biggest nightmare that keeps parents up at night. We feel helpless to stop such tragedies, because we by definition won't be there. And shootings aren't limited to schools. Various bad guys and unfortunates with mental illness target malls, concerts, clubs, workplaces, churches...anywhere the good guys gather.

Alain Burrese teaches one of the most powerful curriculums in the country for surviving this sort of attack, based on his experience in military, legal, and institutional self-defense. He has exhaustively researched the various active shooter doctrines, and built on it to create the best possible response.

He was kind enough to chat with us about what he's learned, and how we can apply it and teach the most vital parts to our kids.

Martial arts training can be one of the best safety decisions you make in your life, and for your family. Although actually using these skills in physical self-defense is rare, the benefits for safety go far beyond disabling an attacker.

Just a few benefits include better physical fitness, knowing how to fall down without getting hurt, and a confident demeanor that sends potential attackers looking for an easier target. Also, it's really fun.

But those benefits only come if you get into the right martial arts program. Some programs are a perfect match for your and your family. Some are great schools, but not so great for your needs and interests. Still others are a bad idea for anybody.

Trouble is, if you're not already involved in the martial arts, you don't know what to ask and what to look for when choosing a martial arts school for your family. In today's episode, I join Kris Wilder and Jeremy Lesniak. Between us, we have more than a century of experience in the good, the great, the bad, and the ugly of martial arts across the world. We talk about what we've seen, and how you can turn that into an informed decision for your family once you decide to begin training.

This is the first half of a two-part conversation. FIND PART TWO OF THIS CONVERSATION over on Whistlekick Radio: https://www.whistlekickmartialartsradio.com/

In 2020, over 1.3 million fires claimed 3,100 lives in the United States alone. Most of those fires were completely preventable with better fire safety, and the overwhelming majority of the deaths could have been avoided with a strong, rehearsed safety plan.

Jim Kowalski is a Lieutenant in his fire department. He sees what happens when families are less than safe with fire. He knows the risks better than almost anybody, and how to overcome them.

In our talk, he walks us through the most important pieces of safety equipment, how to use them, and the mistakes most people make with that gear. Since it's best used as part of a well-thought-out and practiced plan, we also talk about how to build and rehearse one with our families.

No matter your politics, it's a fact that different people face different safety and security challenges. A 200-pound Marine home on leave faces a reality that looks very different from that of a 100-pound woman with no combat training and limited mobility.

Race is part of those differences, impacting everything from health risks, to social scripts and expectations, to interactions with police. Michael Dorsey, host of parenting show Black Fathers NOW!, takes the time to discuss some of those differences...and many of the things we share in common.

Whether you're a parent with a black or blended family, or an ally from a different checkbox on the census form, it's a conversation you shouldn't miss.

A child predator or sex trafficker abducting or otherwise victimizing our children is one of the worst scenarios we can imagine....but here's the truth. Those things happen extremely rarely. The most likely people to victimize your children are the people you already know: coaches, uncles, cousins, teachers, karate instructors, and neighbors.

Colleen Lynch has spent her law enforcement career stopping the bad guys who victimize children, and helping the children and families who became their victims. She has seen what the monsters do, how they act, and what works to keep our kids safer from them....and she has seen what to do, and what not to do, if we suspect one of them is grooming or abusing our children.

We talk for nearly an hour about her experience, her work, and how you and I can make her colleagues less busy by vigilantly protecting our children from molestation and other kinds of abuse.

When bodyguards and other security professionals get ready for a client to travel, they send a team to conduct an "advance": a systematic research and assessment mission about the destination, so they know how best to keep their client safe.

Chris Story is an executive protection professional, who has spent thousands of hours in the field doing this job and written courses for national governments, militaries, and corporate clients.

He was kind enough to walk us through some of the basics about how families can apply his techniques to safer family travel. Whether we're going to grandma's for the weekend, taking the family road trip, or going together to Berlin, Bangkok, or Barcelona, we can take some simple steps to make the whole trip safer and more fun.

Child trafficking is probably the worst thing we can imagine as parents. The idea of our kids trapped in literal slavery, without us able to help them, is worse than we can bear. Keeping our children safe from human traffickers and sex traffickers protects them from something that's thankfully rare, but unbelievably horrible.

Shelley Repp has spent over a decade working with victims of child sex trafficking, and with the institutions that work to help them -- and those who accidentally make it easier for traffickers to get more victims. In this episode, she shares her tragically-earned knowledge with us.

We spend a lot of time in our cars. Under normal circumstances, everything works out just fine. But when things go wrong, having the right tools on hand can mean the difference between an inconvenience, an emergency, and a tragedy.

Assembling a solid car emergency kit is one of the best investments of time and attention we can make to keep our kids safe...but so many kinds of car emergency kit from so many people can make the process daunting and confusing.

Marie Dodds has spent nearly two decades working for the American Automobile Association (AAA), and shares her car emergency knowledge with us.

As with all of our Loadout episodes, Marie sent me a list for the perfect car emergency kit a couple weeks in advance of filming. I went and got all the items, and in this episode we go through them one by one. What are they? Why do we need them? What are the most common mistakes and misconceptions for each item?

Being a parent can be scary. Having the tools you need for unexpected trouble, right there in the car, can make it less so.

Most of the self-defense guides out there are written by professionals. Their relationship with crime and violence often results in information that's deeply frightening, and solutions that many civilians might be uncomfortable with. Their frame of reference is simply not the same as yours and mine.

Marc Macyoung grew up in a life of violence, and lived long enough to learn from the mistakes he made, ultimately making a career out of writing, teaching and testifying about how violence and violent crime play out in the world. His most recent book, "Self Defense Doesn't Have to Be Scary" is his attempt to fix the problem I just mentioned.

In this two-part conversation, Marc addresses the most important things regular people and parents don't know about self-defense, how we can learn them, and the best ways to apply them in our busy, daily, kid-distracted lives.

Protecting your family on a daily basis doesn't exactly require a "very particular set of skills", but having those skills on deck can certainly be helpful. Even if we never use them directly, they can create a background of awareness, confidence, and competence that makes even the comfortable and boring parts of parenting safer.

Jason Hanson spent his young adulthood as a covert operative for the CIA, but then left the agency because it wasn't a good life for a family man. Now a father of five, he continues to apply his training to family safety, and shares his knowledge in a variety of courses, newsletters, books, and articles.

Today he talks to us about simple ways even civilian parents can apply spy tradecraft to keeping our families safe every day.

Bullying has been linked to depression, anxiety, physical health deterioration, reduced grades, and higher risk of addiction. It's far more than a childhood rite of passage, but instead a serious problem impacting families worldwide.

Dave Kovar got into martial arts in response to bullying, and has made bully resistance and prevention part of his teachings from the beginning. His program Done With Bullying teaches the best methods for stopping bullies in their tracks, in schools and martial arts schools in multiple countries.

In today's talk, he runs us through the key differences between "old school" and modern bullies, and walks us through his four-point system for preparing our children to stop bullying in its tracks.

Andy Murphy has spent his life taking responsibility for his own safety, and for that of the people he loves. Part of that journey has meant hosting a podcast, publishing books, and conducting and taking trainings on the tactical, mental, and environmental aspects of keeping families safe.

Being of similar minds, Andy and I decided to put together a two-part interview where we went over the top things we've learned so far while conducting our shows. The first five are on his podcast (link below), and here on our channel is Part Two.

Auto accidents are the most common cause of death among children in the United States, but we need to get them to school, soccer practice, grandma's house, the doctor, and everywhere else. When they're not with us, we need to get to work and back home to them safely.

Jason spent much of his long career in law enforcement as a traffic officer. He has seen first-hand what happens when we make mistakes behind the wheel, and knows exactly what we should do (and stop doing) so his job haunts his nightmares a little less often.

In today's video, he talks with us about those things. How we can drive, interact with our kids (and our technology), and focus on the things that will keep us safest and get the whole family to our destination in one piece.

Kids spend more time at school than they often do with us, simply because of the realities in the lives of many working parents. We can know and do everything right, but we can't be with them all the time.

George Brick spent over 20 years in Marine Force Recon, a special forces group, as an active duty operator. Afterward, he shifted his career to teaching and school administration. That combination of experiences makes him among the most qualified people in the world to talk about security and safety issues in school.

He shares the fruits of that experience with us today, telling us about the most important danger zones in school, how to tell if school staff is doing a good job, and how to communicate with our kids and school authorities if that job is lacking. Tune in for a great, informative show.

Being aware is how we avoid danger to our children, keep our families safe, and even prevent unnecessary expenses from accidents, injuries, and crime. The trouble is creating and maintaining habits of being aware when life and our kids are demanding our attention in every direction. Today's show is about how to fix that problem.

Dawn Armstrong teaches children, adults, and groups about situational awareness for real people. She bases her Think Safe Seminars on her personal experience in the field and years of martial arts training, applying them to real life circumstances.

In this video, she shares ways to turn your normal habits into habits of awareness, how to teach those techniques to our children, and the different kinds of awareness we can expect from kids, tweens, teens, and young adults.

Social media is at the center of many teens' lives, and a growing number of tweens. It's how they primarily interact with their peers, which can lead to bullying and other troubling behaviors just within their age group. It also serves as a gateway for predatory adults who want to prey on the naivety of younger people.

There are no easy solutions to this problem, but Cat Coode has some good ones. Cat is the founder of Binary Tattoo, a service that advises families, organizations, and corporations alike on data privacy and online safety.

She talks to us about social media safety. How to set clear, fair boundaries and discuss them with our kids. How the bad guys break through privacy and security settings, and what we can do to stop them. What to watch out for with SnapChat, Instagram, and Tik-Tok, three of the most popular social media platforms among children today. What you know is how well you can keep your kids safe, so join us and learn all you can.

Welcome to Safest Family on the Block. Today's video is Travel Health Safety with Andrea Leschak of Wayfinder Advantage.

Travel is about fun and excitement, but those joys come with real risks. As parents, we have to weigh those risks against our responsibilities to our children -- and often our elders, as well. But that doesn't mean we should avoid travel, even adventurous travel, just because we have families.

Andrea Leschak is a pharmacist and world traveler who specializes in helping people experience amazing vacations despite medical challenges. She guides her clients through assessing their needs, learning about where they're going, and developing a plan to make it possible, safe, and rewarding.

In this video, she shares her travel safety from a health perspective. What can we do to ensure our children's health while traveling off the beaten path? Where can we find the most important information? How can we do it all and still have the mental energy to enjoy the trip? Andrea answers all of these questions and more.

Steve was kind enough to send me the parts list for a perfect family first aid kit. The kind you keep in the closet and use for everything that doesn't require an ER visit. In this video, we go through those items piece by piece. Steve explains what they're for, how to use them, and the most common mistakes and misconceptions for each.

Welcome to Safest Family on the Block. Today's video is about Situational Awareness with Jim Alsup.

Situational awareness is not just for police, military, and others who put themselves in harm's way as part of their professions. It's also the most important self-defense tool for any parent. By remaining situationally aware, you can see potential problems coming in time to avoid them...or at least to form a plan for mitigating their risks.

Jim Alsup has served his country for decades, in capacities of signal intelligence, federal-level prosecution, and undercover investigation. His application of situational awareness in the field has saved his life, and the lives of civilians, many times over.

Today, Jim shares what he learned in training and on the street, and shows us how to apply that knowledge in our daily lives. Even better, he shares with us games and techniques we can use to teach our kids about awareness, and get them involved in a not-scary way in paying attention while out in the world.

Rita R. Robison has worked in consumer journalism since print papers were still our primary source of news and information. In that journey, she has found the most important things parents and families should pay attention to, ranging from bad credit traps, to smart consumer moves...to safety issues endangering our children.

Today she sits with us to discuss how to access product recall information, and about the most surprisingly dangerous items we find in our homes, and of course what we can do to make them safer.

Alex Bromley has spent over a decade applying his command of the communications techniques in Verbal Judo to life as a police officer, and trained people to use them from the boardroom to the bedroom. As an investigator in child exploitation cases, he has seen firsthand what can happen if we let communication break down between parents and children.

Today, we talk about bringing those same techniques into conversations with our kids...what to avoid saying, how to keep caring communication as a priority, and how to work together to find the best possible solutions to any problem.

Justin Schorr has done rescue and emergency medical operations for more than a quarter century. He's seen it all, and done most of it. As he says...if you saw a vehicle drive by with its siren on and lights flashing, he's been in that vehicle a few times.

I asked Justin what things parents could do better so he sees kids less often in his professional role. According to his wife, he rattled off a list that he's spent his whole career complaining about. In our first episode, we discuss that list and what we can do as parents, so he and his colleagues can see them less.
