They are terrifying, terrifying, and frightening. Yet at first glance, they remain invisible: these prehistoric monsters, belonging to one of the oldest species still living on Earth. Hidden in the deep grass and beneath duckweed, their dark gray shells resemble tree trunks. Alligator Alley is the best place to meet Mississippi alligators, the oldest prehistoric monsters on earth.
Only when these gruesome giants slowly stir does their monstrous power become apparent. One bite could split a tree. A slash of their tail could dent a car door. The Alligator genus originated between 38 and 26 million years ago. The Mississippi alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), also known as the pickerel alligator, lived in the southeastern United States for millions of years before the first humans arrived.
The teeth are also arranged differently: when the alligator's mouth is closed, only the upper jaw teeth are visible, while the crocodile's lower jaw teeth are also visible. Alligators prefer freshwater habitats, while crocodiles can also be found in saltwater. Alligator Alley is home exclusively to alligators, who are free to roam freely in their natural habitat.

Since 1834 Fort Morgan has stood as the guardian of Mobile Bay. The military site and National Historic Landmark is located 22 miles west of Gulf Shores.
Construction began in 1819, but due to its isolated location, the fort was not completed until 1834. Skilled masons, many of which were enslaved African Americans, built the fortification which contains more than 46 million cubic yards of bricks.
Fort Bowyer preceded Fort Morgan at Mobile Point. Fort Bowyer was constructed by the U.S. Army during 1813 to guard against possible British attack. This small log and sand fortification was attacked twice by the British during the War of 1812. The first attack made by four British warships and a combined force of British Royal Marines and Creek Indians came on September 15, 1814. The ensuing battle was a total American victory. One warship, the H.M.S. Hermes was sunk, and the marines and Creek Indians were forced to withdraw. During a second battle which took place during early February 1815, a combined British land and naval force forced the vastly outnumbered American troops to surrender the fort. By the terms of the treaty that ended the War of 1812, the British had to return Fort Bowyer to the United States.

New Orleans is the city of jazz, lively streets, and a deep-rooted history. "The Big Easy," as it is affectionately called, enchants every visitor with its unique atmosphere. A highlight of any visit is a ride on the Natchez Paddlewheeler on the Mississippi.
The ship, a relic of a bygone era, offers unparalleled views of the city from the water. As the ship cruises past the ruins of an old military installation, the captain recounts the river's strategic importance and its role in the Civil War.

This more than 140-year-old house fell victim to arsonists. In broad daylight, unknown individuals entered the Wilhelminian-era monument, which the last resident had vacated only a few weeks earlier because, after a long dispute involving strikes, protests, and legal proceedings, it was finally to be rebuilt and renovated.
Then the arsonist struck and set fire to several floors of the enormous building, which until ten years ago had housed a long-established furniture dealer.
It took the fire department eight hours to contain the flames. In these few hours, the house, recently sold for almost a million euros, has become a ruin that will likely have to be demolished.

The visit to Atlanta, Georgia, is a journey through history and modernity... Gabbage Town, for example, is a district of wooden houses on the edge of downtown, a half-hour walk from the business district. People live here who have turned their district into a kind of alternative oasis in the middle of the southern capital: signs advertise Kamala Harris, world peace and rainbows. But once you cross the street, wild punk is already raging. In the middle of a meadow, a rock band that is as passionate as it is still in its infancy fills the neighborhood with sound.

They are calling htemselfes Fail Together and every time when the six-piece band entered a stage the complete chaos is following them. Fail Together is a folk-punk band from Prague, born in 2020 and after four years still too small to fail. The band from Czech are a successor of heroes like The Pogues, Flogging Molly, the Dropkick Murphys and some special american relatives like East Cameron Folkcore and Jayke Orvis and The Broken Band.
Their debut album is named "Get Lost" and it was officially released only in 2024. The album contains eleven self-titled songs, thematically ranging from serious social issues to shared experiences, occasional ghost stories, to the band's penchant for peppermint liquor. Rage and fun, party and schnaps - this is the formula for an complete chaos.

This was where he was supposed to be at home, the new person who lived from work and culture. Shortly before the 70th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone, the former Buna clubhouse. Named after a german tradition for plant streets from the Nazi-era X50
What today looks like a lost ruin was once built as a “working people's clubhouse” on the instructions of the Soviet occupying troops in East Germany. As long as socialism reigned, world stars took part here. World-famous ensembles such as La Scala in Milan or the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow performed in the multifunctional theater building, which cost 1.8 million GDR marks, in front of the factory gate of one of Germany's largest chemical plants. The winding and confusing house, which monument conservationists described as having an “impressively metropolitan dimension” that was “of particular testament to the neoclassical monumental architecture of the GDR,” was a place where thousands of visitors gathered evening after evening.
But after 50 years the light went out in the lighthouse of culture, in which socialist people could experience artists close to their workbench and become artists themselves in so-called working groups of folk artists. Then a buyer came who wanted to invest more than 20 million euros. Excavators dug thousands of tons of earth out of the foundations, the building shell was gutted, fiberglass was laid, stairs were torn out, floors were broken through and partition walls were moved. Then the government blocked the additional payment of promised funds for the construction. And everything collapsed.
20 years later, all that remains is a proud ruin that attracts nuegieruges who wander in amazement through the halls, corridors and endless corridors.

For decades, the kaolin mine near Roßbach in the Saalekreis was the largest mining site for white clay in all of Central Europe. After 200 years, the company's history ended abruptly - today dream landscapes like those from a long-distance travel catalog are hidden here.
The water on the left is emerald green and so clear that the lake bottom can be seen. On the right, however, a rust-red lake glows in the sun: as if filled with blood, the body of water lies between brilliant white banks, just a few meters away from a third splash of color. The water surface here is indigo blue and it extends a few hundred meters to the north, where a cliff rises that is reminiscent of the white chalk cliffs of Rügen.
A landscape like the famous Yellowstone National Park in the US state of Wyoming, where volcanic processes over thousands of years have painted rocks, colored lakes and stamped fairy-tale structures into the surface.

The German Springsteen Gerhard Gundermann In the Neighbour by Tom Waits In der Nachbarschaft Gundermann was a german singer songwriter. He was a full-time excavator driver in a lignite opencast mine, but he also wrote great songs on the side. They called him the German springsteen. Unfortunately he died in the summer of 1998 at the age of only 43. This is a very rare live recording from a solo show in a very small club the year before his death.

We are in Poland, a country near and far away at the same time. We've seen lakes and castles, battle fileds and animals, we met good peole and we drink good beer. Today we are going deep under the surface of the Wolf Mountains. To look for one of the last secrets of the Third Reich.
In the border region between Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, a huge network of dark tunnels is hidden deep under the mountain. The Amber Room is not located here after all. But the "Giant" project still holds countless mysteries today.

Everybody knows Greece is a country with a great history and an unbelievable wealth of ancient buildings, some of which have collapsed, such as on the site of the Delphic Oracle, but some of which are being maintained at great expense.
All this is impressive, but the secret ruins of the oldest democracy in the world are even more astonishing than the well-known landscapes of ruins at Delphi or at the Acropolis. An urban exploration expedition to the outskirts of cities and small communities unearths the non-classical ruins of Greece.

Greece is world famous, especially for its beaches, its friendly people, its good food and the ancient ruins that date back to when the ancient Greeks invented democracy a few thousand years ago. Of course there are other things to experience in the country on the south-eastern edge of Europe - you can hike, climb mountains or take cheap ferries from island to island.
Or you are interested in old ruins like me, not that kind of old the ancient greeks are. In this case you will find some interesting places with "mordern" abandoned ruins - hotels, houses, cars and bunkers.

It is a country that, from the point of view of most countries in the world, does not exist at all. Well, it is really there, it is real and nobody denies it. But for fear of the great China, numerous countries around the globe have avoided officially recognizing Taiwan - real name Republic of China - until today. People prefer to live in an uncertain state of limbo, use cell phones, televisions and other technical devices, all of which come from Taiwanese factories. But officially pretends that the state that is out in the Pacific doesn't exist, very small, but a constant nuisance from Beijing. But for us the chance to discover something completely unknown: a country that is not at the top of the holiday map. Nobody. Why not? We'll try to find out.
