Don Blackwell is a trial attorney in Miami, Florida. He is and, for the past 20 years, has been an outspoken advocate on mental health issues within and outside the legal profession, which has made him a sought after speaker, and a regular contributor on webinars and podcasts tackling this increasingly critical subject matter.
Don has written and spoken extensively on the need for a heightened degree of civility among lawyers, which he has dubbed “Compassionate Professionalism,” and, more generally, on the need for greater understanding, vulnerability, and empathy in our day-to-day interactions with one another.
Don’s daughter, Ashley, courageously fought and won a decade long battle with anorexia, a battle that inspired Don to become a tireless advocate and spokesperson in the eating disorder community. In 2020, Don organized the Legacy of Hope Summit with two dozen of the leading eating disorder experts in the world.
A year later that Summit resulted in the publication of the first consensus-based Report and Recommendations on eating disorders in the half-century marked by Karen Carpenter’s death in 1982 – a report that garnered the endorsement of more than 120 eating disorder practitioners and persons with lived experience across the country.
Don also is the author of “Dear Ashley ...” - A Father's Reflections and Letters to His Daughter on Life, Love and Hope (2013), and, more recently, of Retune Your Heart – Finding the ‘”Extra” in the Ordinariness of Everyday Life, and its companion journal, The Playbook of Your Childhood Heart (2025).

Dr. Jeffrey DeSarbo is a neuropsychiatrist and eating disorder specialist who draws on decades of clinical experience to examine the realities of modern-day eating disorder treatment. His insight on the evolution of ED treatment is derived from working at all levels of care, including hospitalization, residential, PHP, IOP and private practice. He discusses the evolution of treatment professionals, treatment centers, the expansion of virtual care, the insurance and monetary climate, and the increasing pressures placed on patients, families, and clinicians alike.
Eating disorder care has changed dramatically over the past decade, but not all change is progress. While not dismissive of progress, Dr. DeSarbo does not shy away from difficult truths. This is an open, thoughtful dialogue grounded in clinical experience, research, and advocacy with an emphasis on placing patients and families at the center of the conversation rather than professional comfort or institutional balance sheets of the current state of eating disorder care, how it has changed over the past decade, where we are today, and where we may be headed with AI and super intelligence.
This discussion also examines how clinicians are trained, where education succeeds, and where it falls short. It addresses the growing tension between research, clinical practice, and real-world outcomes, and openly acknowledges the role that financial and structural incentives can play in shaping treatment systems. Linda and John Mazur advocate locally, nationally, and internationally. They serve as community advisory board members of the Western New York Comprehensive Care Center for Eating Disorders. They attended President Biden's Speech, Improving Access for Mental Health Care, in 2023. They have spoken at eating disorder conferences, and for community groups regarding the importance of eating disorder and mental health awareness, advocacy, and education. They provide peer support groups for adults and families through their non-profit, The Emilee Connection, as well as connect people to resources. They wish these supports were available for their adult daughter, Emilee, and for them, as her parents. It takes a village of support to help someone through a mental health struggle. They honored their daughter's last wish by writing a memoir with her writings included, so it might bring awareness to the things that need to change, in the hope that no one else would have to suffer as she did.

Jennifer Collins, author, is a retired professor and physical therapist whose professional
career spanned forty years. She held many titles during those years, but “Mom” was the
one that brought her the most joy; her close-knit family was the center of her universe.
Her debut novel, Comfort in the Wings, emerged from Jennifer’s devastating
experiences with the loss of several immediate family members, including two of her
three children. Tragedy in her life brought an understanding that seemingly opposite
feelings - joy and profound sadness or gratitude and anger – can exist at the very same
moment. Striving to articulate those emotions compelled her to bring a seldom heard
voice into fiction. Supporting loved ones through chronic illness, substance use, mental
health struggles and sudden loss, Jennifer was struck by the toll that stigma and
judgement take on people who are grieving. Her books delve into meaningful
conversations about these issues without preaching or politicizing highly personal
issues.
Encouraged by readers’ response, Jennifer wrote two more books, creating the Love
That Does Not Die Trilogy. Jennifer enjoys writing about the quest for joy and gratitude
after grief, especially celebrating signs in nature from lost loved ones or finding healing
near water. Most recently, the MartinArts Council recognized her as their 2023 Literary

Brooke is a Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor, who has grown up and lived in the Finger Lakes region her whole life. She has recently delved into neurodiversity after finding out her own neurodivergence in the fall of 2022. As she was navigating what it meant for her, she expanded her practice to specialize in neurodivergent couples and trauma therapy.
This is an expanding and needed space. Brooke is on a mission to normalize it for others and herself after a lifetime of trying to keep it all together! Brooke is passionate about helping others unmask and understand their unique needs therapeutically as individuals and couples.
She has come to realize that oftentimes, many of the traditional or "neurotypical" therapies and theories often just "don't work" for out of the box thinkers, empaths, and creatives. Sadly, due to many stigmas and stereotypes of the traditional way of treating mental health, there are just too many gaps in care and knowledge. Brooke is working to bridge that gap for others who may be trying to cope with some conditions like ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, PTSD, TBI, Dyslexia, and more to live empowered lives.
Brooke has a private practice, is a provider for Golisano’s Behavioral Health, a Neurodivergent Trainer and advocate with a passion for engaging the community to broaden our understanding of neurotypical so that everyone has access to compassionate care.

Barbara has lived all her life in the Rochester area and has a lakehouse on Keuka Lake. She raised 3 daughters, one who was diagnosed with anorexia at age 11 in 1969. At age 88 Barbara has experienced the impact of alcoholism, mental health issues and anorexia/bulimia, starting when her youngest daughter was 5 years old, all during a time when NO ONE was talking about any of it. Barbara’s youngest daughter was exhibiting behaviors that seemed very different from her other daughters; she consulted their doctor; this was the beginning of a lifetime of struggles. At this time, she also shared her concerns about her oldest daughter’s loss of weight, change in mood and refusal to eat. The doctor told her to not delay, to take care of it right away. This was to be a journey that she knew nothing about, she and her husband were scared and felt very alone. Their daughter did recover; what is fascinating is, they consulted a psychiatrist who took the lead and supported this family; 30 years later this might not have been the case, fast forward to today; where psychiatry is beginning to become much more involved in treatment and diagnosis.

Kaitlyn Vittozzi of Rochester, NY is a C-IAYT Yoga Therapist who specializes in chronic pain relief, stress-reduction, and perinatal struggles. A SUNY Albany School of Business graduate, she is no stranger to corporate stress and the physical ache that working and striving for the next big thing all the time can leave on a body. Kaitlyn began teaching in 2014, taking yoga teacher training as a healthy summer hobby. Soon after teaching, she recognized that people left class happy, and that their mood was uplifted, and she realized they had left life’s stressors behind. Kaitlyn went on to study yoga therapy with Phoenix Rising to help people use the tools of yoga to enhance their whole life, rather than just an hour per day.
Yoga is an ancient practice not just based on the postures we see in magazines, but on eight holistic limbs and Kaitlyn hopes to highlight this with the individuals, couples and groups she works with. Clients learn to improve their relationship with physical, mental, and emotional tensions that show up in their bodies. Kaitlyn began teaching for KMB for Answers in 2021 and has studied Yoga for Eating Disorders. She also teaches paddleboard yoga and writes for Rochester Woman Online. She loves spending her downtime with her dog.
As a yoga therapist, Kaitlyn’s goal is to help you discover long-term relief and a happier mind, body, and spirit.

MATT VENUTI is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist composer/performer and music video artist who is known for introducing rare and expressive acoustic and electronic instruments to the world through his concerts and videos. Matt has been the featured performer at multiple TED and TEDx Conferences. Two of Matt’s albums charted in the top 10 of the College Media Journal and Zone Music Reporter. Matt offers electro-acoustic concerts and Multi-Media events, but is also known as a singer-songwriter and band-leader that has played on numerous national stages and high-profile events. Of all the twists and turns in Matt’s life, nothing would have as profound an impact, as the death of his wife. Matt and Yolanda had spent 20 years together and Matt felt lost and disconnected from life. He escaped to nature with the Hang instruments, he visited the redwoods, the canyons, the ocean, the desert…anywhere that offered a peaceful environment where he could find strength in nature. In time his heart started to heal, but with a different level of maturity that felt more enduring. He began to develop musical motifs that came from these visits to nature’s sanctuaries, and they later evolved into compositions. He wrote lyrics that reflected the delicate passage of life and the human need to turn to the heart for solace. He soon realized this wasn’t simply his journey, but the journey of all humans in the rhythm of life. Check out Matt’s website at: www.mattvenuti.com Our Hosts:

Jason was born in South Korea in 1970, only 18 years after the end of the Korean War. When Jason was 5 years old, his parents moved their family to the United States. Starting a new life with Jason and his two younger sisters in a foreign country and culture was a struggle for their whole family and Jason’s father developed alcoholism.
Throughout Jason’s childhood, he experienced many of the challenges immigrants face when coming to the U.S., including racism, anger and separation. These experiences were both traumatic and deep seated. Everything was chaotic and unpredictable. During this time, Jason discovered that he could control one thing— his grades. Jason learned quickly that feeling in control and achieving was a way to get recognition and the praise of parents, teachers, and peers alike. He had no control over his environment, as his dad’s alcoholism dictated that the family move every 2-4 years. Jason never felt at home anywhere. He developed anxiety and depression at an early age which was undiagnosed until he was twenty-three.
Jason developed a dependence on alcohol, endured broken relationships that have been devastating, experienced the painful death of loved ones, and has survived a traumatic automobile accident. He has explored many methods of healing including physical, mental/psychological, and spiritual. He attributes his work in the Twelve Steps of AA, embracing spirituality—especially in Eckhart Tolle’s teachings and the teachings of ACIM—A Course in Miracles—to his continuing recovery of body, mind, and spirit. Jason helps others by sharing his journey and by being a supportive friend to others who struggle. He currently lives on the East Coast of the US with his cats Jiji and Muta.

As a lived-experience professional, Kym is passionate to provide siblings who have a brother or sister with an eating disorder the acknowledgment, connection, and resources they have never been afforded. To highlight this need, she has collaborated alongside clinicians, researchers, and organizations for over a decade. In 2018 she co-created a sibling needs survey with Bridget Whitlow LMFT, that has reached over 500 siblings around the world. The survey has continued to bring the sibling experience to light. That same year KymAdvocates.com was created to allow a space for siblings to share their experiences, stories, and perspectives. Along with these incredible interviews Kym’s had the privilege to educate and support hundreds of siblings and parents which has led to the Sibling Support Series. Based on the series feedback, she is developing a course for parents and siblings. Stay tuned! Kym currently serves as a Community Advisor for Equip and Co-Chair for the Academy for Eating Disorders Expert by Experience Committee. Jackie Patmore's involvement in the eating disorders field spans multiple roles of researcher, educator, clinician and patient advocate. Before occupying these roles, however, it was her personal experience of developing anorexia as an elite volleyball player when she was 14 years old that ignited her desire to enter the field in the first place. As a patient, Jackie was subject to care that lacked an evidence base, was nearly impossible to access, and was void of cultural sensitivity. Early awareness of these and other gaps in treating and understanding eating disorders drove her to harness her own experience, education, and professional pursuits to improve conditions and treatment options for eating disorder sufferers.
As a researcher at the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, Jackie was involved with studies that implemented evidence-based treatments for eating disorders in clinical settings. She assisted in the creation of online Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) interventions and assisted in projects providing Family Based Treatment for children with Anorexia and Binge Eating disorder. Additionally, Jackie helped to establish Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) as a primary treatment for eating disorders, depression and anxiety in university clinics nationwide.
Jackie has worked in a variety of mental health treatment centers including private and hospital-based, outpatient and inpatient eating disorder clinics. Throughout her time in clinical practice, she has also been involved in advocacy efforts to increase insurance and federal coverage of eating disorder treatments in Missouri, Texas, and New York. Jackie has also lectured and taught course sections at Columbia University, Hunter College, and NYU. She enjoys teaching on the topics of eating disorders, evidence-based interventions, and dynamic forms of psychotherapy.
Currently, Jackie is a PhD candidate at Columbia University’s Clinical Psychology Program and manages the Somatic Expressions of Pain Lab, supervising master's students on research initiatives related to sexual abuse, trauma, substance use, self-injury, and eating disorders. Her lab has presented at international conferences and published studies related to lying and deception about issues of eating and body image in treatment, cultural considerations for the treatment of eating disorders, and the use of peer supports in the treatment of eating disorders.

When a trusted physician tells Renée Schuls-Jacobson that he has the solution for her chronic insomnia -- a "tried & true medication without any side effects," she believes him.
For seven years, she takes clonazepam exactly as prescribed until, one day, she learns that her doctor is wrong: long-term prescription benzodiazepine use causes all kinds of problems, including profound changes in brain function.
While healing from an iatrogenic brain injury, Renée had to unlearn a lot of bad cultural messaging. She learned to trust her intuition & her body above everything else, and she discovered a new ability – her creativity – which has turned into her greatest strength, led to confidence and brought her to her current beautiful and fulfilling life chapter.
Nearly nine years after her injury, Renée's brain is mostly healed. Today, she is an independent artist whose paintings hang in private collections throughout the world. In addition to painting & teaching art classes, Renee is also a Certified Peer Recovery Advocate offering emotional support to individuals who have withdrawal from their psychiatric medications. Things I’ve Seen People Do With and Without Food
Debra Spector M.S, R.D.N, C.D.N
Debra Spector M.S, R.D.N, C.D.N is a Registered and Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist who has upheld a private practice since 1990 on Long Island, New York (Nassau and Suffolk Counties) as a nutritional therapist, mentor, educator, entrepreneur, and consultant. She holds an Undergraduate Degree from SUNY at Oneonta and received her master’s degree along with completing her Internship at Long Island University. Debra specializes in eating disorders and treats adults, teenagers and adolescents. Her philosophy is meeting everyone’s needs individually and guiding them to achieve a normal relationship with food, weight, and body image. In addition, Debra strongly believes in guiding teenagers and adolescents away from the “good food vs. bad food” or “healthy vs. unhealthy” philosophy and to encourage them to find a way to make “all foods fit”. Debra also authored the book, The Things I’ve Seen People Do With and Without Food which has recently been chosen to receive The Pinnacle Book Achievement Award, as one of the Best Books in Health category, winter 2022. Her decision to put together this book of collections was primarily based upon the fact that she believes most people who struggle with eating disorders are either silently struggling alone or misunderstood. Debra believes everyone who struggles with an eating disorder should find their inner voice and be heard. More importantly, she wants those suffering to know that they are not alone.

Nothing remarkable happened, certainly no great traumas, yet, at the age of 11, Jane developed a serious eating disorder. It wasn’t until age 35, that Jane got a handle on recovery, thanks in no small part, to the best dog to ever walk the planet – a beautiful, soulful, rescue bulldog named Crystal.
That special dog taught Jane the true meaning of unconditional love and gave her the courage to join life again. The endless cycle of hospital admissions stopped, and for the last 15 years Jane has worked in the field of mental health and substance misuse, campaigning for better services, developing projects to challenge stigma, and educate people about mental illness.
Jane is passionate about a fairer welfare system for low-income families, and she is currently employed by a wonderful organization which helps people access financial and emotional support, as well as practical services.
Jane’s main ‘love’ in life, outside of her work, is and always has been, animals. She spends every moment of her spare time with her crazy greyhound, Daisy. Jane also enjoys reading, watching ‘rubbish’ TV, and spending time with her family.
