Hey friends and fitness community. As some of you read in my stories last week on instagram, I am closing down my podcast to focus my time elsewhere. I wanted to do a final episode, which is a deeply personal testimony of my journey over the past few years.
In it, I share how doing the work of body image healing ultimately led me to question my religious faith and find peace and, for the first time, true autonomy.
This is a "as I stand here today" and not a "I have it all figured out" kind of testimony, and I hope you can find some healing through my story also.
I thank you so much for your support since I first launched the podcast in 2021, and the thousands of downloads and positive feedback. It has been an awesome passion project that feels bittersweet to end at this time.

If you are relatively new to the world of seeing exercise as pleasurable & healing, you've come to the right place. Sometimes I hear clients ask me, "How do you go after goals or challenge yourself without slipped back into the dieting/fitspo world?"
My answer to that today comes in the form of an acronym: PLAY
P: Past Pleasure
L: Leave the Rules Behind
A: Apply New Guidelines
Y: Your Body Knows Best

What happens when we have a negative body image? It affects our self-esteem, we tend to disconnect from our relationship with our innate worth, we eat based on rules instead of body trust, and it's near impossible to live empowered lives.
When we are in the trap of a negative self image, we tend to board the train of perfectionism in ways not only in how we eat or exercise, but we try to excel in other ways to gain approval and seek evidence that we are worthy.
That ends today.
Detaching your self-worth from your body image is one of the most LIFE-IMPACTING, powerful work you can do.

Have you ever felt like striving for joyful movement seems impossible? Joyful movement can have a lot of pressure when you’ve come from a place of hating exercise for such a long time. The conversation today explores how we can ditch that all or nothing, black and white mindset that comes with exercise, and how to navigate that grey area between hating exercise and loving it, between diet culture and anti-diet culture, to finding neutrality with movement recognizing that not all exercise is going to be comfortable or easy.
Today's conversation features 3 trainers and 1 therapist, all ladies whom have been on the show before:
Stef Bender is a certified Personal Trainer with a passion for power lifting, intuitive eating and body image coaching. After hitting rock bottom in 2020 with her physical and mental health, Stefanie found intuitive eating and health at every size. From that emerged a completely new way of life and a new way of coaching clients. Stefanie now guides others on their own intuitive eating journeys, building a healthier relationship with food, mind and body.

I share about International Women's Day and how womanhood inspired me to embrace all that is woman, including body hair.
I encourage you at the end to take a look at your own day to day and ask yourself your intentions behind something as simple as your morning routine. Are you doing it because you love it? Or because you think you 'should' do it?

We had to do something about LOVE on Valentine's Day ;).
Today on the show I am talking about how you don't have to love your body. Despite all the body positive messaging, we are allowed to just exist in our bodies.
Loving your body is optional. But we do have to get away from hating our bodies.
Today I talk about a bridge between body hatred and body love called 'body neutrality'.

If you have struggled with finding exercise you enjoy, todays episode is for you.
For many people, the word 'exercise' feels like a heavy word loaded with expectations, pressure, to-do lists and punishment. That's why I try to encourage those deconstructing exercise to change the word to movement for a time because our bodies need movement, any movement, for optimal function. Exercise is just a fancier word that has been co-opted by the very loud weight loss industry, hence creating this idea that exercise is for either 'earning or burning' food.
Today I give you 5 steps to help you change your mindset to find movement that is fulfilling and enjoyable.
About the host:

Today on the show I have the privilege of interviewing a friend and colleague, Ardelle Viau, who will talk a bit about wellness culture and the tenth principle of Intuitive Eating, Gentle Nutrition.
What you will learn:
- What is gentle nutrition
- What is wellness culture & how is it different than diet culture
- How intuitive eating puts you back in the drivers seat of your life
- Should you focus on nutrition or not when you become an intuitive eater
- Can nutrition play a role in eating choices
Ardelle is an Intuitive Eating Coach and Certified Holistic Nutritional Consultant dedicated to guiding ambitious women through the process of breaking free from perfectionism and dieting so they can intuitively embrace healthy & abundant lives. After spending years obsessing over her body size and health doing fad diet after fad diet, then health protocol after health protocol, she never felt like what she was doing was enough. It wasn't until she studied intuitive eating and combined it with her holistic nutrition education that she was able to fully accept her body. Intuitive eating has allowed her to embrace wellness without obsession. It has allowed her to love, nourish, express and empower herself. And now she is here to help you do the same! With over a decade of experience coaching clients, she is on a mission to dismantle diet culture and redefine wellness. Ardelle’s approach is highly individualized and rooted in intuitive eating, mindfulness, self-compassion, and the principles of Health at Every Size (HAES).

Life is too short to count calories and to try and squeeze into your skinny jeans two sizes too small for comfort. But it's not your fault if you are
neck deep in believing your true life will start once you reach a thinner destination. We have all been conditioned to believe this through thin actors in Hollywood to magazines claiming you need to earn your bikini.
Today on the show I am interviewing Sarah Miller, mom of 3, who is a graduate of the Nourished Moms, Healthy Kids program July 2021.
Today she shares her journey from body dissatisfaction to body neutrality throughout the 12 weeks and how she has applied the principles she learned in the NMHK program to her family life. The language her children are growing up around is now inclusive, body-positive and empowering.
Sarah shared this about the Nourished Moms, Healthy Kids Program:
I can honestly say that this program has changed my life. Jolyn, you are such a wonderful teacher. Your enthusiasm, energy, and passion for this topic is contagious. I never thought I would be happy with my body without losing weight or looking a certain way, but I am happy and now enjoy being active because it's fun and makes me feel great. Thank you for all of it.

What you'll learn in this episode:
Weight loss goals appear on the surface to be about comfort (feeling good), "health", and physique. What is under these goals is most often a desire for acceptance & confidence (the real kind not the 'earned' kind)

The word 'fitness' means anything from health & wellbeing to 'being able to perform a role or task'(Wikipedia), yet when we hear the word, most of us have been conditioned to imagine a thin and toned gym rat who is smiling while doing burpees. Most of us assume if we don't dedicate 3-4 days to working out at the gym, we aren't 'fit'. But what if being 'fit' meant more than physical?
This week I created the Core Values for my business and I wanted to elaborate on why physical fitness is only ONE element to fitness.
What you will learn from today's episode:
What does fitness mean?
How can you be 'fit' in your 4 bodies?
What creates sustainable motivation?
One easy way to be more present in your body in everyday life.
Core Value #4: Fitness is Holistic. Fitness is about well-being in our 4 bodies: Mental, Emotional, Spiritual and Physical. We believe it is imperative that we learn to trust our innate wisdom and body cues, challenge negative self-talk by choosing curiosity over judgment, and bridge the gap between our inner and outer self to create our most authentic life. Having a healthy relationship with movement means when we take away the guilt and aesthetic pursuits behind moving our bodies, we are better able to connect to ourselves and focus on ways in which exercise enhances and enriches our life (i.e., better sleep, stress reduction, and improved overall sense of well-being). We believe that finding joy in movement is essential, but recognize that not all movement will be easy or comfortable. Self-compassion goes a long way when starting a fitness routine and oftentimes challenging ourselves physically rewards us in other areas of life.

On today's episode I answer the question about whether you can lose weight with Intuitive Eating. Is there a way to eat true to your innate cues while also dialing the scale back a bit?
In order to answer this question, we have to look at our biology and how our bodies are intended to work.
Today's episode is a shallow dive into a deep pool of understanding how our bodies function, so I reference some articles and books that could be helpful if you'd like to explore this topic deeper.

Episode 17 - How do I navigate Halloween candy with my kids?
So what do we do now with all this Halloween candy? If you are feeling anxious about having all this candy in the house, or are creating a plan to have it all destroyed as quickly as possible, then this episode is for you. The topic of sweets can be stressful because of the bad rap sugar has in our culture. It's perfectly normal to feel nervous. But the beautiful thing is, we don't have to hold so much control over our children because they are incredibly capable beings at self-regulating sugar intake*. You can have your treat and eat it too!
*this information is based on research for children aged 2+. Prior to age 2 it's important to use your own discretion when introducing sugar.

This guided meditation/visualization is intended to help my clients notice any resistance they may have to exercise and also to help them find meaningful reason to incorporate joyful movement into their lives.
I decided to share this guided meditation/visualization on the show for you today.
*Please note, this practice works best if you are in a quiet space with no distraction.

As you know by now, as my genetics would have it, I am in a thin body.
What if I told you I had a sore knee, went to a specialist for treatment, and they told me, "sorry, I can't treat your knee until you lose some weight".
You would likely think, "wow... that's silly, you need to see a different specialist."
What if I told you I went to several specialists including my family doctor and my close friends and they all told me to lose weight to heal my knee pain?
It sounds pretty ridiculous now doesn't it? So why would it be any different for someone in a fat body?
Listen in on today's episode as I read an article by Ragen Chastain of Danceswithfat.org and discuss what you can do instead if you are experiencing unethical prescriptions like weight loss for joint pain.
Update on recommended footwear:
After chatting with a chiropodist, I've learned that there are 4 features to look for in a shoe for ultimate support:
1) Should be bendable in toe,
2) 2 Colour Sole (Dual Density)
3) Strong Heel Counter (if you squeeze heel it shouldn't pinch together easily, should be firm)
4) Torsional Rigidity (meaning it doesn't wring out like a wet washcloth, can twist a bit)
A few recommended running/walking shoe brands: Apex, Apis, Asics, Ecco, New Balance, Propet, Saucony (make sure it follows all 4 features), and Paradigm Medical runners.

Hey friend, After the interview with Laura in Episode 12, I decided to make a BONUS episode. I have learned to keep the recording going because sometimes there are gold nuggets of truth and solid content after the formal interview that apply so well to the content. This was certainly the case with Laura and so I've added for you today a BONUS episode.
Enjoy!

In Episode 10 - we discussed 3 reasons why complimenting someone on their weight loss is unhelpful. Today we will discuss the last 2 points.
On the show today, I have a very special guest, Laura Spaetzel, who is a social worker/psychotherapist with a specialty in trauma and eating disorders. She is joining the conversation to talk about the impact of how body comments affect someone with an eating disorder and how you never know who might have one. It affects any and all types of people regardless of body size, type, race, gender, etc. It doesn't discriminate, eating disorders can affect anybody.
Grab a coffee/tea and be ready to take notes. This is a good one.
If you have questions about how to get connected to a service or if you have further questions for Laura, you can contact Laura here: @laura_ashley_90

Should we use fitness trackers? What is your relationship like with your tracker? Do you use it to decide if you worked hard enough or not? Could your tracker have more control over you than you think?
Today on the show I have a special guest, Kim Hagle of Radiant Vitality Wellness, who gives us great insight into the pros and cons of using trackers while developing a positive relationship with movement.
Kim Hagle is a certified Personal Trainer, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, mom of four and founder of Radiant Vitality Wellness. Kim hosts The Joyful Movement Show podcast and through her signature program “Discover Joyful Movement”, she helps women who feel unmotivated to discover what moves them through intuitive movement, eating and mindset coaching so they can heal their relationship to exercise and feel confident in their now body.

Spoiler Alert: Don't.
We live in a body obsessed culture that attributes thin as a compliment, and fat as an insult. If you've ever heard someone say an outfit makes them look fat, and their friend stop them and say, "oh no, honey, you don't look fat, you look beautiful" (reinforcing the idea that you can't be fat and beautiful), you've just witnessed fatphobia.
Have you ever really thought about how weird (and invasive) it is to comment on others bodies? It's almost impossible to walk through a shopping center without overhearing a conversation to the likes of, "You look so great, have you lost weight?"
Listen in to Part 1 of today's episode as Jolyn challenges you to consider why complimenting someone may actually be doing more harm than good.

"Eat your carrots", "One more bite", "If you don't eat dinner you won't get dessert".
What if we didn't have so many rules for our kids? Would they eat? Would they get the nourishment they need if we didn't force them to bite into their vegetables?
I've experimented with Ellyn Satter's Division of Responsibility and come to realize that there is a reason she is an internationally recognized authority on eating. IT WORKS!
Our kids WILL eat what we provide so long as there is no pressure or praise. It takes a lot of practice, mistakes and experimenting, but I can tell you from mom to mom, mealtimes are much less stressful. I trust my kids will listen to their own bodies to tell them when they are full, and when they'd like to experiment with new foods.

"Pregnancy kind of feels like a crash course in Intuitive Eating....pregnancy makes you even more hyper aware of your bodies cues" - Katie Valley
I had the privilege of interviewing my friend and colleague in the field of Intuitive Eating, Katie Valley of Katie Valley Wellness. Katie and I took the same professional mentorship program together and bonded recently over stories of early pregnancy. In today's episode, Katie shares about her journey from crash dieting to becoming a Holistic Nutritionist, incorporating Intuitive Eating into her life and practice, and now listening to her bodies needs during pregnancy.
"Since incorporating Intuitive Eating into my practice, I have never felt more passionate, proud, and genuinely authentic in the work that I do"
Katie Valley is a Holistic Nutritionist, Intuitive Eating Coach and Adjunct Professor whose goal is to dispel the myths of diet culture and reinforce a holistic, health-focused approach to wellness. After her own experience with disordered eating and poor body image, Katie found true healing by practicing Intuitive Eating and Body Acceptance. Today I am answering the question about motivation & why you don't need a trainer to get it.
One of the big secrets within the fitness industry (and one that even trainers are often blind to) is the fact that when clients are chasing body ideals, they will always be returning customers. They will think they are unmotivated and need your program to hold them accountable. And that mindset is highly profitable!!! But what if you could be motivated in a way that lasted that didn't require following programs, training plans or gyms?
In todays episode, I unmask some research done regarding the behavioural science of motivation. In order for motivation to last, you need to cultivate both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation that have nothing to do with appearance or body image goals. You will learn that the research shows body-altering goals were proven to be ANTI-motivating and had the opposite outcome of what the participants goals were.
(Meaning, if your main goal was weight loss, you were less motivated to workout)
Take-aways:
- If you enjoy the activity, feel like you are good at it, feel like you have choice and control, and enjoy the people that you are doing it with, you are likely to desire to participate.
- Improved health outcomes and physical fitness are also motivating forces so long as there is zero body altering goals.

Today on the show I have the privilege to interview my rock climbing buddy and sister in the field of non-diet training, Stefanie Bender. Stef is an ex-diet culture personal trainer, and has a passion for power lifting.
Stefanie is passionate about helping others recognize the life they had hoped weight loss would bring them, and instead guides her clients to courageously create the life they truly want!
Stef shares the 3 main components of Self-Compassion which she learned through dismantling her own perfectionism within the competitive fitness world.
I know you guys will enjoy hearing about her journey.
Key components of Self-Compassion:
1) Mindfulness
2) Common Humanity
3) Self-Kindness vs. Self-Judgment

In today's episode, I talk about why it's not necessary to teach our children healthy vs. unhealthy foods, but rather to listen to their bodies. Kids are WAY more intuitive then you think, and that's because they were born that way, just like you. Do I believe that some foods keep your blood sugar more regulated than others, yes. Do I believe some foods will make you feel better, give you more energy, make your digestion operate better? yes, yes, yes.. but it's more complicated then labeling food. Everyone reacts to food differently so the MOST important thing we can teach our kids is autonomy with food by listening to their own bodies.

I get this question....never. Nobody is asking this question because nobody uses the word 'DIETING' anymore. But the reality is that we live in a culture that is obsessed with restricting food, controlling food, or avoiding food to lose weight. Sounds a lot like dieting when it's put that way, right?
What if there was another way? What if we could look at food and see what it was originally intended for without judgment, guilt, fear and shame?
Listen to today's episode where I share about what Intuitive eating is all about and how you can start the process of unlearning diet culture.

I get it, being a mom is BUSY work. I have a 3 and 5 year old, trust me, I know!
But what if exercise could look different? What if we shifted our mindset a little bit to include the movement we are already doing. What if we made the self-care act of moving our bodies a priority like we do showering or going to appointments?
Listen to todays episode to see how we can see exercise from a new angle.

If you aren't aiming for weight loss, what other goals could you aim for, and how could a non-diet trainer help?
Perhaps you might have goals like: more flexibility, lower blood pressure, higher aerobic capacity (less winded), better mobility/balance, or more strength!
Oftentimes my clients think they want weight loss only to realize that it's actually acceptance they are seeking. Acceptance in a fatphobic world. Acceptance in a body that society deems unfavourable, unattractive or unhealthy.
Through my profession it is my intention to end the stigma and help my clients find acceptance which happens through mindset work. I not only help my clients with their physical goals, but also to see their worth and to inspire them to have a newfound love of movement they didn't think possible! It's time to get to the root issue.

Hello everyone and welcome to the first episode of The Non-Diet Mom Show!
My name is Jolyn Martin and I’m from Kitchener, ON. I am a mom of 2 and passionate about helping other moms heal their relationship with food, body and exercise. Shortly after starting my career in the fitness industry, I started to notice the dangerous and toxic effects of chasing thinness and finding self-worth in body image. After dismantling my own beliefs, I have now made it my mission to help other moms change their mindset around self-worth and identity. I guide moms in finding peace with food, discovering the joy of movement, trusting their amazing bodies, and ultimately living in a way their children could respect and follow.
