2 Samuel 13 and 1 Kings 1 June 16, 2024 David was a dad. The Scriptures name 19 sons, 1 daughter, and 1 child who died in infancy. These 21 children came from his eight named wives, not to mention his unnamed wives and concubines. Most of David’s relationships with his children are awful, but at the end of his life he does the right thing. David wasn’t perfect, he definitely wasn’t a perfect Father. But Jesus is the perfect Son, who reconciles us to the perfect Father.

When Jesus rose from the grave, He conquered death and sin. This act of victory sealed the deal that His blood and sacrifice was powerful for our forgiveness. As Paul says, “if Jesus didn’t rise, our faith is futile and we’re still in our sins.” But, because He did rise, our faith is NOT futile and we are forgiven in Him. And, we have now the ability to forgive others as well.

In Matthew 15, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and scribes who criticized his disciples for not following traditional Jewish rituals. He rebukes them, emphasizing the importance of inner purity over outward observance. Following this, he performs miracles, feeding thousands of people with a few loaves of bread and fish. The chapter ends with Jesus warning his disciples to beware of the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

As we face as a nation and world, the possibility of global war, it is easy to panic and get caught into the mindset that all things are coming to an end. Here Daniel receives a visit from an angel (many hold to be Gabriel). This angel explains his delay in coming to Daniel due to having to contend with the “prince of Persia,” yet his answer still came. God answers prayer. In a great deal of desperation, Daniel prays and seeks God for his people. And God answers with one of the great passages of hope in all of Scripture. The much debated “Seventy Weeks” passage occurs here. Whether this refers to merely the Roman Empire’s destruction of Jerusalem or to that plus the end times event is up for debate. However, we cannot miss the expressed hope in this passage – hope needed by us all.

Daniel accurately predicts the next two ruling empires over the land known as Israel – Persians and the Greeks. The details to which Daniel prophecies is amazing, especially given that evidence demonstrates that Daniel actually writes this several hundred years before the Persian Empire or Greek Empire take over the area of Israel. Such historical evidence continues to demonstrate how trustworthy the Bible is.

Daniel 4
Nebuchadnezzar had another dream. Daniel interprets once again by God’s grace. Due to the king’s pride, God causes him to go insane. Yet, God continues to pursue him and restores Nebuchadnezzar. No one is beyond God’s salvation. Nebuchadnezzar went from a scoffer to a worshiper of God. The people of our culture are NOT beyond the salvation of God. We must pray, engage and evangelize.

Daniel 3
Jealousy, plotting, scheming, and rebellion. Daniel’s three friends faced all of this. Yet even in the face of what seemed hopeless, they continued to trust in God. Their faith was even so rock-solid that they confessed that even if God did not rescue them, they’d continue to trust in Him anyway. On this Mother’s Day, our moms need this kind of faith. In a culture that is swallowing up our youth, we must stay firm and rock-solid in our faith in Christ.

John 11:1-44
Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem for the Passion week. While stopped for a few days, He hears of His friend Lazarus being sick in Bethany. He decides to wait a few days before heading out to Bethany, knowing He was going to reveal something about Himself to His followers and Israel – that He is the Resurrection and the life! No doubt, this act sparked great enthusiasm and excitement as days after raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday with a King’s welcome!

A Jewish leader named Jairus had a sick daughter. Despite what his peers and superiors in the Jewish system may say, he went to Jesus. On His route to see the girl, she died. All hope seemed loss. Even as Jesus arrived and was on His way to the girl’s room, people were laughing at Jesus and, what they thought was the absurdity of anyone beating death. To their shock, Jesus brought her back to life! Faith rewarded.

Luke 7:11-17
Jesus shows up in a town called Nain. As He arrives there is a funeral in progress for a young man who was the son of a widow. Jesus has compassion and raises this man back to life. This was Jesus’ first act of demonstrating His power over death when He was in the flesh. Nothing is beyond His love and ability.

2 Kings 13:20-21
In this very obscure and brief narrative of a dead man coming back to life after his body slightly touches the bones of Elisha, this account shows the perfection of Scripture and God’s promises. God had promised Elisha a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. When Elisha died, he was one miracle of short of doing twice the miracles of Elijah. Here we see that not even death can stop the promises of God.
2 Kings 4:18-39
The prophet Elisha had travelled to the town of Shunem. There, a woman and her family bless Elisha with hospitality. She had been struggling with infertility. So, Elisha prophesizes that she will have a child. She does. But later, that promised child dies. When all hope seems lost, Elisha raises the child back to life by the power of God. When things are tough and seem impossible, we cannot forget the resurrection power of God that can turn things on a dime.

Elijah the prophet has several encounters with a widow in the town of Zarapheth. Elijah demonstrates God’s incredible power to feed them during a famine – and then to raise her only son back from the dead! We can often forget God’s limitless power in our lives. But Paul says the same power that raised Christ from the dead dwells in us as well.

In this appeal to Philemon to receive back Onessimus, Paul informs Philemon of how useful Onessimus has become. He had gone from “useless” to “useful”. Anyone before coming to Christ is incapable of living a life of purpose for the glory of God on their own, but once we have the Holy Spirit, He leads us to a life of usefulness.

The attack on truth is as old as history. There have always been false teachers in the church who are pursuing personal gain. Who are they? What characteristics do they have? Jude even gives us some Old Testament examples.

Without question, the greatest threat to the church has always been false teaching. While external threats – such as religious persecution and the world’s animosity – are certainly unpleasant, the wounds they inflict are only physical and the injuries they cause only temporary. The deadliest false teaching, on the other hand, comes not from deceptive, non-Christian religions outside the church, but from spiritual pretenders inside the church.

Before we dive into the letter from Jude, let’s look at this man. Who was he? We know he was Jesus’ half-brother. But, we also know he did not believe in Jesus while Jesus was on the Earth. What happened? How did this non-believing sibling convert to being not only a believer but a key leader in the early church? The answer is the resurrection.

Since we’re to seek unity and truly unconditionally love one another, we should, therefore give deference to one another and serve each other. We should do so with humble hearts for the glory of God and the edification of the church.

Jesus cites as the second greatest commandment to “love your neighbor as yourself.” To enforce this commandment, He and other biblical writers provide numerous other commands to us about “one another” that deal with love. He also speaks in Missouri Baptist churches and leads conferences on Christian apologetics, and he directs the Missouri Baptist Apologetics Network.
He is the author of nine books, including The Apologist’s Tool Kit; What Every Christian Should Know About the Trinity; and, most recently, Jesus Before Bethlehem: What Every Christian Should Know about the Angel of the LORD. His 10th book, What Every Christian Should Know About Satan, is due from High Street Press later this year.

Jesus lived in a very pluralistic society – meaning the Romans, as the occupying force, understood there to be many gods. Some of these gods were good and some were bad. Jesus comes on the scene reiterating not only what the Jews said – “there is only one God and we serve Him,” but Jesus even added that He was the only way – the exclusive way to know God. Still today, this is a radical, but powerful claim.

Jacob marries Rachel and loves her. Yet, she is barren, but God opens her womb as He has in the past. The eleventh son of Jacob is Joseph. He is wronged and betrayed on numerous occasions. Yet, he remains faithful to the LORD in all of his actions and the LORD continues to be with Joseph. Ultimately, the LORD elevates Joseph to the second highest position in the world where he is able to ensure the prosperity of God’s growing nation in Egypt. With all this power, instead of exacting revenge and justice, Joseph sees God’s sovereign hand at work and forgives.
