A remarkable week in FX markets saw the US Treasury join Japan’s intervention to support the yen – the first co-ordinated US currency intervention in around three decades. Eimear Daly and Brian Daingerfield discuss why Washington took the unprecedented step, what it signals for US-Japan relations, and why intervention alone is unlikely to solve the yen’s structural challenges.
The discussion also explores China’s changing role in the global economy. After years of exporting deflation, China is now exporting higher prices in key sectors as policymakers encourage manufacturers to move up the value chain.
Highlights:
A historic intervention: The US Treasury joined Japan’s yen intervention for the first time in around 30 years, signalling strong political and strategic support for Japan.
Intervention can only go so far: While coordinated intervention can stabilise markets in the short term, lasting yen strength will require changes in economic fundamentals, particularly Bank of Japan policy.
Japan faces a policy balancing act: The government wants to support growth through fiscal stimulus, but markets are looking for tighter monetary policy and reassurance over Japan’s fiscal outlook.
Rate differentials are no longer the whole story: Although narrowing US-Japan interest rate spreads should support the yen, investors are increasingly focused on fiscal policy and the outlook for Japanese government debt.
China’s export model is evolving: Chinese manufacturers are shifting away from competing on price towards higher-value, higher-margin products, supported by industrial policy.
China may no longer be exporting deflation: Rising export prices suggest China is beginning to export inflation instead, with potentially important consequences for global inflation and central bank policy.
Industrial policy is reshaping global trade: Beijing is using tax policy, currency appreciation and targeted incentives to push manufacturers up the value chain and reduce reliance on low-cost exports.
Replacing China’s low-cost manufacturing won’t be easy: Few economies have the scale or policy tools to replicate China’s manufacturing model, suggesting higher production costs could become a structural feature of the global economy.

This week on Currency Exchange, Eimear Daly is joined by Paul Robson and Brian Daingerfield to assess a pivotal week for global central banks and currency markets. They unpack the Bank of England’s policy decision to hold the base rate, analyse the market’s reaction to the Fed under Chair Kevin Warsh, discuss suspected Japanese FX intervention, and examine China’s latest signals for global growth and trade.
Key takeaways:
The Bank of England’s communication was interpreted as more dovish than its vote suggested.
Sterling remains more sensitive to UK fiscal policy than interest-rate expectations.
Suspected Japanese FX intervention highlights authorities’ concern over yen weakness but does not alter the longer-term fundamentals.
Markets continue to grapple with uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s reaction function under Chair Kevin Warsh.
China’s leadership remains focused on gradual, fiscally-led support while prioritising strategic industries over broad consumer stimulus.

This week, Brian Daingerfield and Paul Robson discuss yet more sterling outperformance. While UK rates continue to support the currency, the discussion focuses on politics and fiscal credibility as the dominant drivers for sterling over the coming months.
The pair also examine softer-than-expected US inflation data, asking whether this could mark a turning point for Federal Reserve expectations and the US dollar. Finally, they explore developments in Japan, where policymakers are considering ways to encourage domestic investment in government bonds—potentially creating longer-term support for the yen.
Key takeaways:
Political and fiscal developments remain the dominant influence on sterling, with the Autumn Budget likely to become the next major catalyst.
NatWest’s Bank of England outlook remains unchanged despite recent geopolitical developments.
Softer US inflation could represent an important shift in the macro narrative if confirmed by future data releases.
Markets may have become too optimistic on the US dollar after several months of strong economic surprises.
Japan appears to be exploring longer-term structural measures to support its bond market and currency, rather than relying solely on foreign exchange intervention.

This week on Currency Exchange, the team discusses the market implications of the first Federal Reserve meeting under Chair Kevin Warsh, the outlook for the US dollar following a hawkish shift in Fed expectations, the Bank of Japan’s widely anticipated rate hike, and growing concerns about potential Japanese FX intervention.
Key takeaways
The first Fed meeting under Kevin Warsh was interpreted as hawkish, largely because Warsh declined to counterbalance a more hawkish committee message.
The FOMC dot plot surprised markets, with half of participating members projecting rate hikes in 2026 and several favouring multiple increases.
NatWest no longer expects Fed rate cuts this year, providing near-term support for the US dollar, although markets may still be overpricing tightening risks.
The Bank of Japan’s rate hike to 1.0% was fully anticipated and had little market impact, partly due to Governor Ueda’s absence and limited forward guidance.
Japanese intervention risks remain elevated as USD/JPY stays near multi-decade highs, but Japan’s accommodative fiscal and monetary policy mix continues to argue for underlying yen weakness.

The conversation covers the ECB’s latest decision, upcoming meetings from the Fed, Bank of England and Bank of Japan, and the implications for the euro, pound, dollar and yen.

FX markets remain remarkably calm despite an intense period of central bank and geopolitical risk.
The ECB remains cautious and highly dependent on developments in energy markets.
The Bank of England is unlikely to act next week but remains under pressure from persistent inflation concerns.
The first Fed meeting under Kevin Warsh could mark an important shift in communication strategy.
Dollar strength has been supported by better US data, but expectations may now be running ahead of reality.
The Bank of Japan is expected to hike rates, but markets remain focused on whether policymakers are willing to defend the yen more aggressively.

This week on Currency Exchange, Eimear Daly and Brian Daingerfield step back from the day-to-day market headlines to focus on what global FX clients are thinking about the US dollar, geopolitical risk and the broader macro outlook.
Against a backdrop of rapidly shifting developments in the Middle East, the discussion explores why conviction across FX markets remains unusually low, how investors are positioning across G10 currencies, and what themes are emerging in China and broader emerging markets.
Key themes discussed

Brian Dangerfield explains why fast-moving geopolitical developments are preventing investors from taking strong directional positions in FX, despite large moves in rates and commodities markets.
Dollar outlook: Fed on hold versus global tightening
How markets increasingly expect the Fed to remain sidelined while other central banks continue tightening policy, potentially weighing on the dollar over time.
G10 FX: Sterling, yen and commodity currencies
Sterling continues to outperform expectations, why intervention risk is dominating yen positioning, and why investors still favour the Australian dollar despite recent volatility.
China and EM: The rise of high-value manufacturing
China’s economic transition toward AI and advanced manufacturing is reshaping profit growth, inflation dynamics and currency policy expectations.

FX markets are caught between relief and reality. This week on The Currency Exchange, Paul Robson, Brian Daingerfield, and Eimear Daly unpack how a fragile Middle East ceasefire is reshaping the dollar narrative – unwinding war-driven gains, but leaving behind stubbornly higher energy prices and hawkish rate expectations.
With positioning reset and the dollar stuck mid-range, the team debates what parts of the pre-war playbook – and what’s changed for good.
In Europe, attention turns to capital flows and whether structural pressures on the dollar could finally push EUR/USD higher. Meanwhile, in the UK, a sharp repricing of Bank of England expectations is already reversing as policymakers signal patience in the face of an energy shock.
Looking ahead, all eyes are on Fed nominee Warsh: will he accelerate the pivot to rate cuts, or reinforce the market’s wait-and-see stance?
Finally, we take a closer look at how a political shake-up in Hungary sparked a rally in the forint, and raises the prospect of deeper EU integration.

In this lookahead to 2026, host Tim Phillips is joined by Eimear Daly, Paul Robson and Brian Daingerfield to discuss key themes shaping the year ahead.
They start with the dollar, where 2026 is expected to be dominated by the Fed’s interest rate policy. Should we expect a policy error if rates are kept low under new Fed leadership and continued fiscal expansion? And what, crucially, does this mean for the dollar's exceptional status in foreign reserves?
They also discuss how FX markets have become desensitised to geopolitical drama, only reacting when real economic effects are visible. And in emerging markets, lower volatility and a weaker dollar appear to create a favourable backdrop for high-carry currencies.

In this special edition of The Currency Exchange, host Brian Daingerfield is joined by Paul Robson for a closer look at sterling and the US dollar as we head into 2025.
Where 2024 was characterised by political change, markets will examine the follow-on in 2025 – what higher fiscal commitments may do to inflation targets, bank rates and, ultimately, the relative performance of currencies. In the US, that means contending with Trump 2.0, while in the UK unprecedented fiscal commitments may help sterling’s current strength. Lastly they touch on how China-related risks might affect the fortunes of the Australian and NZ dollars, and whether the Canadian currency may diverge from the US dollar.

Recent inflation news was softer than had been feared by some, but were other economic prints a step in the right direction? And how many more signs of a soft landing might the Fed need in order to cut rates?

This week host Imogen Bachra is joined by Joann Spadigam and Deepika Dayal to pick over recent developments in bond markets. Much of the focus this week was on developments in the US, where higher than expected inflation is thwarting the Fed’s scope to cute rate this summer (we’ve revised our forecasts). Quite what this means for policies in Europe and the UK is uncertain, but divergence is the watchword.

This week's host Brian Daingerfield is joined by Paul Robson to focus on G10 currencies. In the UK, sterling weakened slightly thanks to dovish tones from the Bank of England while in the US, a bumpy road back to 2% inflation means market uncertainty over the dollar. Elsewhere, the Swiss National Bank became the first G10 central bank to cut rates, and may have to handle imported inflation and a weaker franc. Meanwhile, Japan's increase in rates may not be the beginning of a grand hiking cycle, and a weakened yen suggests markets agree. Lastly, they discuss Norway and Swedish currencies, where it's krona vs krone.

In our latest episode, Brian Daingerfield is joined by Chief US Economist Kevin Cummins to discuss this week’s US inflation readings and their implications on the Fed and the dollar. They go in depth on the Fed’s “dot plot” release and think the market is priced for a hawkish adjustment - but it’s a close call if the medians move up or stay put. They also touch on the Bank of Japan decision next week and its impact on the yen. Encouraging wage inflation data may mark the end of negative policy rates in Japan.

This week, Brian Daingerfield and Paul Robson discuss how an improved outlook for US inflation after next week’s Consumer Price Index print argues for tactical short dollar exposure. They lay out why the euro failed to sustain losses on a dovish central bank forecast revision and argue the yen may strengthen on pre-Bank of Japan short covering. They also consider the lack of sterling reaction to the UK budget, and how the changing of the guard in Swiss FX policy may be a game changer for the franc.

This week Brian Daingerfield is joined by Alvaro Vivanco to focus on the US, Mexico and Canada. A lack of data from the US has meant a quieter week for the dollar, but ahead of core personal consumption deflator data, can the market expect more positive signs for the US economy? In Mexico, the prospect of early bank rate cuts suggests the peso may no longer be the star of emerging market currencies, while local and US political change may pose additional currency risk. Meanwhile in Canada, short-term aggregates of inflation data seem to dictate when rates will start to fall.

This week, Brian Daingerfield and Eimear Daly focus on FX in Eastern Europe, and discuss how varied central bank approaches affect currencies in different ways. In Hungary, political confrontation with the EU over aid to Ukraine eventually dissipated, but other risks raise problems about the forint. In Poland, a new government face challenges in unwinding eight years of nationalist, populist rule, and despite falling inflation, rates look likely to be on hold for the rest of the year. Lastly in the Czech Republic, a 50-base point rate cut surprise saw a big decline in the koruna.

In this week’s episode, Paul Robson and Brian Daingerfield discuss how the Bank of England and Fed each pushed back against market easing expectations, to differing degrees. They comment on why the outlook for sterling may still be to the topside and why the Fed leaned dovish, despite Powell saying a March cut is not likely. Elsewhere, they talk about how recent inflation data in Europe keep the euro in a challenging spot. Finally, they focus on Sweden where the Riksbank suggested earlier cuts may be appropriate. But the impact of earlier easing on the SEK may not mean that lower rates equals lower FX.

Join Eimear Daly and Paul Robson as they discuss world FX prospects in a year that's sure to be dominated by news from the US. With the latest US inflation figures ever-so-slightly stronger than expected, little has changed for Fed policy. Meanwhile at the European Central Bank, the doves are growing in number, as inflation data has weakened the hawks' position. Does a likely early cut in rates and poor economic data mean the euro will underperform? In the UK, the nature of inflation bears more consideration than the headline rate, whereas in Poland the focus is on keeping borrowing rates steady - and confidence high.

Join Brian Daingerfield and Alvaro Vivanco as they discuss FX market moves in recent weeks. In the US, December's sell-offs of the dollar have partially reversed in January, leaving them wondering if seasonal and liquidity factors led the USD to weaken too far too fast heading into the end of 2023. And in emerging markets (EM), they discuss why December was a somewhat disappointing one for EM currencies, given the performance of other cyclically-linked asset classes. Finally, the two touch on drivers of the yen, which has been the worst performer in G10 in the early days of 2024.
