Welcome! We are Rachel and Charis, sisters and licensed clinical therapists with over thirty years of combined experience. In our personal and professional experiences we have learned how much we all have in common as women inhabiting this earth, and how often we struggle in silence and isolation. We invite you to come along with us as we come home to ourselves--engaging in the deconstruction of who we were told we were–be it because of traumas or familial or cultural messaging–and growing into the reconstruction of who we are truly meant to be. Look for new episodes every Tuesday.
The Therapy Sisters welcome back Jessica Downs, certified EMDR therapist, trainer, and ego states extraordinaire. Jessica talks candidly about growing up in the Mormon church, what parts of herself those experiences shaped and how parts are impacted in cases of spiritual wounds and trauma. Jessica is a warm and brilliant voice and The Therapy Sisters are so excited to have her back on the show!
In today’s episode The Therapy Sisters explore the idea that often is internalized among those who grew up in religious communities that, whenever something goes wrong, it must be your fault. Struggle with depression? Pray more! Life hands you something challenging? Must be because you’re not doing enough. Or the right thing. It’s exhausting and it isn’t true. Listen as they share their experiences around this, how they see this play out in the lives of their clients, and what you can do to help address this narrative in your own life.
In this episode The Therapy Sisters discuss the message that something is wrong with you just by merit of your birth and the way in which people, women in particular, grow up to internalize this message.
Welcome! We're so glad you're here. Grab a cup of coffee (or your drink of choice) and join the Therapy Sisters as they sit down with Cassie Krajewski, LCSW. Cassie is an LCSW based in Denver, CO where she runs her private practice, Inner Atlas Therapy. She uses EMDR Therapy and Internal Family Systems Therapy to treat complex trauma, disordered eating and body image, and sex and relationships. Cassie is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant and a senior faculty member at Kase and CO, an EMDR training business where she offers an EMDR and Disordered Eating course for therapists. In this episode, Cassie shares her own story of growing up in purity culture, how that shaped her, particularly in relationship to her own body, and what she sees in clinical practice around purity culture, sex, and body image. This is an amazing conversation and Cassie brings so much wisdom, experience, and insight to this discussion. Hello, and welcome back to The Therapy Sisters Podcast!
In today's episode, The Therapy Sisters discuss purity culture and some of the inherent messages young women internalized about their bodies as a result, including:
-Where shame about the body starts
-How the messaging within purity culture impacts the mind/body/emotion connection
-The "light switch effect" when women get married.
-How consent factors in
-How women's sexuality is largely left out of the conversation
-How young girls who grew up within purity culture are made responsible for the thoughts/actions/desires of men and how that plays out into their future sexual lives and relationships with their own bodies.
....and more!

**A quick note: We had some challenges with the audio there at the end so this episode ends abruptly. It does end where the conversation wrapped up, but we understand it may feel sudden and wanted to give a heads up. Still, it doesn’t not detract from Jaymie’s inspiring message.
The Therapy Sisters welcome back friend and fellow clinician, Jaymie Bush. She shares her story of coming up in a legalistic and conservative religious environment, how she internalized narratives about her body and emotions and how she has reclaimed those in adulthood. Jaymie also shares how this impacts her clinical work with women who are on a similar path. Next week we will welcome another story as we continue to elevate women's voices and empower them toward reclamation of their stories. Want to connect? Us too! Deciding on a boundary is one thing. Communicating it is quite another. It can be challenging to know how to broach these conversations, but this tool provides a helpful framework from which to do so.

In today's episode, Charis explores curiosity as it relates to the body. Some key points include:
-The judgement we hold for our bodies and how that gets in the way of listening to them.
-How hating our bodies impacts our ability to listen and be responsive to them.
-The tendency of women to do all the things and push themselves so hard that they stop being responsive to their bodies.
-How curiosity can help us reconnect to our bodies and cultivate a better relationship with them.
And don't forget to come back on Thursday for the body scan practice. This is a great way to begin the work of curiously noticing sensations in our bodies.

Today we kick off our summer minisode series! This will be a two part series spanning the months of July and August. In July we’re going to take turns discussing how to foster curiosity in our lives. In August we’re going to discuss self-compassion. Both of these are absolute values to the Therapy Sisters, both in life and in our clinical practices.
This two-part series will look a little different. We’ll still release an episode on Tuesdays, but it will be a short minisode with some teaching and a specific focus. On Thursdays we’ll provide some kind of practice to help you build your curiosity and/or practice self-compassion. The Thursday exercises will coincide with the Tuesday minisodes. We hope this will be a fun, bite-sized valuable couple of months!
We’re kicking off today by defining what curiosity is and how it’s the antidote to self-judgment. Take a listen and don’t forget to return on Thursday for your guided practice!
Thank you for joining us! We hope you found this episode helpful!

Jaymie lives in Jackson, Michigan with her husband and four kids. She’s been a clinical therapist for over 15 years and loves her work now more than ever. From kids to couples to adults of all walks of life struggling with trauma, depression, anxiety and grief she feels honored to care for and work with her clients. Outside of the office, you will find Jaymie cheering on her kids at their sporting events, drinking expensive coffee (because let’s face it, she’s classy), and debating whether she wants to read for work or pleasure. Put her on a beach with her husband and kids, a fancy coffee and great book and she would call it Paradise! Get comfy as we talk with our guest Jaymie about how trauma was stored in her physical body.
