In this episode, I discuss my basic philosophy on writing. I used to think writing had to be beautiful, magical, or inspirational. I still love those things about good writing. But I've come to appreciate simple, direct writing that conveys its ideas clearly to its intended audience. If you're a programmer, or technically inclined, rather than artsy-fartsy like me, this is your call to just start writing!

In this episode, we discuss the perils of being judgmental, especially with ourselves. The journey of mindfulness and learning is frought with perils, not least of which is our own self-criticism. Hopefully this episode provides a new perspective, and helps you be a little gentler with yourself.

In this episode, I introduce myself, the podcast's format, and talk a bit about its content. Here's a quick rundown.

About Me

  • I'm a Software Developer with over five years of experience.
  • I have Master's degrees in Medieval History (Oxford), English (Tyler), and Computer Science (Tyler).
  • I've been practicing mindfulness and meditation for the past several years.

Hopefully all this makes me worthy to teach you the soft skills you need to be successful in your tech career.

Podcast Format
This podcast releases on weekdays and will be approximately 5 to 10 minutes in length. You're busy tech professionals and I want to be respectful of your time. Also, these kinds of ideas benefit from daily reinforcement.

What about the content?

I view this podcast as a pyramid of content:

  • Soft Skills: At the top, you've got your usual soft skills--communication, leadership, time management, etc.
  • Mindset: What influences how we approach these skills is our mindset. I think of three factors that contribute to a successful mindset: empathy, curiosity, and growth (ECG).
  • Mindfulness: An easy, open awareness of the present moment, moment by moment, is at the core of doing all these things well. It's a simple concept, but can be incredibly difficult to practice.

We'll talk about all these things over the coming weeks, months, and (I hope) years.
