Sarai has not been able to have children. She tells her husband Abraham to go ahead and have a child with her handmaid, Hagar, which she can count as her own. When Hagar had conceived, she began to look down on Sarai for being barren. Hagar runs away because of Sarai speaking roughly to her. The Lord confronts Hagar and tells her to go back to Sarai. Hagar has a baby and names him Ishmael according as God had said.
Abraham asks God if his servant Eliezer can be his heir as God's promise. However, God states that Eliezer will not be Abraham's heir, but only the son that is born of Abraham and Sarah. God makes a covenant with himself as a promise to Abraham that he will have an heir and become the forefather of a great nation.
