On the N+1 Podcast, we bring in interesting people and talk to them about the things they obsess about. Whether it's their art, their sport, their collections, or even pop culture. We dive down the rabbit hole together and learn about what drives them crazy. In this interview show, we'll be trying to get the bottom of what makes our guests tick, learn about their best and worst experiences, and most importantly, find out what is next on their bucket lists. Because every guitar player knows, the correct number of guitars is "N+1" where "N" equals the current number, and we need one more.
I am so excited to share this episode with Nate Parrish from the Christian rock and worship band Kutless with you. Matt Groom is truly one of my best friends, to the point where he was the best man at my wedding over 18 years ago. Our bromance is strong, and we have truly grown up together over the last twenty years. One thing that has bonded us together has been out love for sports. We have seen many sporting events ogether, and Matt is somehow always finding new weird little sports that no one knows anything about to tell me all about. Darwin Snyder has a truly special story. As an infant in Quito Ecuador he was in a horrible and life threatening situation. Fatherless, and with a mother who would abandon him for days at a time, he was rescued by authorities and placed in the protective care of the local orphanage, which has been operated by the For His Children international missionary organization for over 30 years. Darwin’s life was changed forever as he was adopted by the Snyder family, missionaries who were serving in Quito. His life has come full circle as he is now working with the For His Children team as their new Development Coordinator. Today I am joined by yet another family member as I talk to my daughter about her passion for building with Legos. Elena may be only 14 years old but she is serious about her pursuit of building with Legos. She has been buying, collecting, and building Lego sets for most of her life and puts a lot of effort into doing it right. I talk to her about the challenges and misconceptions of being an avid Lego fan. I ask her to show me some of her favorite Lego builds. She tells me about her biggest frustration when building. I met Nashville Session Guitarist Blake Wrinn very briefly a few years go, right before Covid ruined everything and have been following him ever since. I really wanted to have him on the podcast, because I've always wanted to talk to someone about the Studio experience. Blake is not only laying down tracks at the highest level, but also has his own home studio and is building a state of the art Dolby recording studio in Knoxville, which is home to HBO, Warner Brothers, Discovery, and many other major production studios.

Hadeel Khater is a full time nurse in the Chicago area. She's married and has a young family. She's a very busy woman. And yet in a busy world, and one with a lot of potential hobbies, Hadeel has been drawn by her passion to the wood shop and become a serious woodworker, and specifically to power carving.
When you picture someone who fits the description of woodworker, you normally picture a tall bearded man, covered in dust, alone in the shop. To be fair, this does describe Hadeel's husband Firas sometimes. However Hadeel has been breaking this stereotype for years, as she has been magnetically drawn to the shop by her love of woodworking.She loves the wood, she loves the projects, but most of all, she loves the problem solving aspect of it. Hadeel's power carved projects are beautiful and elegant and very unique, I've never seen pieces like them before. My conversation with Hadeel was delightful and she was such a joy to have on the show.

Often on this show I bring on guests that I've know for ten or fifteen or twenty years. Today I am so pleased to introduce you to a guest that I have known for about a month. Schyler is a person who has dedicated much of his life to Dungeons and Dragons, and one result of that is that he has landed in the role of a "Forever DM" (or Dungeon Master) where he is always the one running the games. We had Schyler run a campaign for our family a few weeks ago and we had so much fun. Afterwards I hit him up and invited him on the show. I found him to be very knowledgeable, with great stories. Schyler absolutely blew my mind when he demonstrated a trick he uses to create improvised fantasy names. Honestly, my brain doesn't work that fast! 24: Bekki Oribello Uses Lasers to Create her Beautiful JewelryA few months ago I ran into Bekki while visiting a street fair in Jackson, California called Dandelion Days. She was running a booth under the name Dragon Hearth Designs selling Laser Cut Jewlery and Keychains, as well as other things. Her designs were small, intricate, hand painted, full of vibrant colors, and artistic flair. Amongst all the others vendors and stalls, her booth immediately jumped out to my family and I. We were mesmerized by the brilliant colors and vibrant jewelry on display at her booth. I grabbed her card and told her that I would be in touch about being on my podcast.What I didn't know was that Bekki would be such a delight to talk to. I haven't been able to find a guest in time to record an interview for an episode in time for my release schedule. However, there was some interesting information that I wanted to pass on to you. We recently had an event here in my local town that was intended to raise awareness about mental health issues and I felt this was a really fitting addendum to the conversations that we've had with Jason Rivera and Christy Maxson. Depression, Anxiety, and other mental health issues are so prevalent in our society and I was absolutely blindsided when I was bombarded with depressive thoughts recently, after Christy and I talked. So I definitely wanted to bring this issue up again and encourage you to talk to "Safe People" as Christy called it, and reach out and seek help, because you are valuable, you are loved, there is hope.
In a previous episode we talked about my favorite author Brandon Sanderson and in one of his books there is an inspiring quote: "This is life, and I will not lie by saying every day will be sunshine. But there will be sunshine again, and that is a very different thing to say. That is truth."
If you are struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts, there is a new help line, 988. It's like 911, but for mental health, and it's NATIONWIDE. There is help, there is hope!
Hopefully together we can all avoid being a jerk for a long time.

Christy Maxson and her husband Derek have been our friends here in Sonora longer than just about any one else in town, but I won't insult them by saying they are our oldest friends as they are still in the prime of their lives. Desiree and I had front row seats to watch Christy's career unfold right in front of our eyes over the last decade or so. We got to watch as she completed her Masters, then did all of her 3000 hours of observed counseling sessions, then become a licenced marriage and family therapist and as since been serving Tuolumne County in that capacity for the past three years.During our conversation, we talked through her journey to become a therapist. We talked about some of the challenges that she faces on a daily basis. She shared some of the joys of the whole thing, and how seeing people have breakthroughs in their lives is what keeps her going. Another thing that came up was that she mentioned a couple different methods that she employs when she treats patients who suffer from trauma and PTSD and she mentioned some acronyms that I'd never heard before. Tim Muenkel has been my brother-in-law for 12 years. I joked in the intro to this video that Tim is the strongest person that I've ever met because he married my sister, but Tim may legitimately be the strongest person I've ever met. His dedication to health, fitness, strength, and above all teaching and coaching others to reach their own fitness goals has always impressed me. Tim has made it his career to help to empower people to change their own lives through the power of understanding what their body is doing, what it needs, and how to get stronger.I found Tim to be incredible intelligent, passionate, insightful, and of course knowledgeable as we talked about Health, Fitness, and Crossfit. He talked about how it all started and his very linear progression from Judo, to the Marines, do regular "Gym" workouts, to Crossfit and how Crossfit felt like the workout he was always looking for. He talked about how he's always been a leader at every stage of his life, even going back to high school. He talks about how his love and passion for doing what he does fuels him so much that even after thirteen years he feels no closer to burnout than when he started. He talks about his incredible approach to anything negative that happens and how he takes responsibility for it, even when it couldn't possibly be his fault, and why he does it that way.He also talks about one of his favorite moments when things started to get better during the lockdown times, and how he and his gym celebrated. Tim was a joy to have on the show and I loved getting to talk to him. We've got to have him on again in the future!

I had a guest scheduled for this week but he had to reschedule. I can honestly say that without Joe Skaff this podcast might not exist. While this podcast was in development, Joe told me that he wanted to hear it. I sent him a rough draft of the first episode and he gave me some very useful constructive criticism that helped to mold the show and helped to get the show off the ground. What also came up in that conversation was that Joe was an artist himself. I never knew that and we talked about someday having him on the podcast.
I thought that may be a good idea, but what I didn't count on was how knowledgable, passionate, and downright charming Joe was when he came on. I should have known, because Joe is always delightful. Joe talks about how he's been an artist since he was a child and how he got the artistry bug from his mother. He talks about how his mother didn't let her disability hinder art, and how the smell of the oil she mixed with the paint still makes him nostalgic. He talks about how he loves to share his passion for art with his daughter and also his young grandchildren and goes on a minor rant about how people always say they can't draw, but that he believe that anyone can learn to draw. "If you can see it, if you can picture it, you can draw it" he said over and over in our interview, and by the end, I believed him!

Meredith Coloma is a luthier and the Owner and Founder of Coloma Guitars located in Vancouver Canada. She has been cranking out absolutely killer guitars for about ten years and some how agreed to come onto my dumb little show to talk about it! Meredith talks about how a potential career as a vocalist was interrupted due to noxious wood dust. She talks about learning luthiery from a Yiddish violin maker who didn't even speak the same language and how he encouraged her to pursue instrument making despite their language differences. She talked about how she was so upset about how her first few instruments weren't turning out that great and so she asked and well known instrument builder for his honest critique, and her response to his feedback.
Meredith is truly a hero of mine, and I can't believe that she was able to come on the show. I feel like there's so much more area to cover regarding both luthiery as well as her career, I hope we can have her back some day. ENJOY!

My good friend Jason Rivera visits the show and shares an amazing story about how his life was changed by a youth Summer Camp, and how he felt the calling to go ALL IN and apply for the vacant Youth Pastor position at his church. His story was so incredible, I laughed out loud and also had tears in my eyes while editing this episode. He talks about how many cookies a freshman boy can eat in five minutes (guess higher), he talks about how attractive he finds it to see his wife serving the Lord with him together. He talks about how a moment when he knew that he would be "apologizing for" later was the moment he knew that the Youth Group Ministry was finally really working. This episode is amazing!

David Miller has been my father my whole life. For over 27 years we’ve played music together, and also fought and argued about music. The thing we’ve fought about more than anything else, is also the musical philosophy of “Less is More." Or, as my dad like to say, “Do Less.”
I talk to Dave about trying to "Do Less," both in his own playing, as well as attempting to teach other musicians the value and benefits of keeping things simple, with the end goal of letting the song shine. Dave talks about how difficult it is to play simply and that it actually takes much more skill to play fewer notes and make sure they’re the right ones. He talks about how challenging it is to get other musicians to “buy in” to the concept of Doing Less so that the song can be “more”, and how rewarding it is when everything comes together or when a stubborn musician (such as myself) finally gets it.
Dave brings some great examples on this episode that we talk about at length, and you are going to want to listen to these songs so that they are fresh on your mind as we talk about them! Check out these songs!

For some people, the idea of a Youth Community Theater sounds like an absolute nightmare. For Kyla Meyer Hatler, it was her dream. For over 17 years she has molded her dream into her every-day reality. From the first scraps of an idea, to rehearsals in her parents living room, to a proper theater space that now hosts several shows and camps per year, Mountain Youth and Community Theater has been serving Tuolumne county for almost two decades. Kyla has been the beating heart at the center of it all, helping to fuel a passion for theater in the hearts and lives of the modern youth.
In this episode of the podcast, we talk about her journey and how it all got started with a wishful conversation while driving with a friend. We talked about how important it is to wear a lot of different hats when running a theater, from balancing the books to creating flyers, to fixing the spotlight, to learning how to fundraise, and that doing the shows is the easy part. She talked about how rewarding it is to see young people step out of their shell and grow in confidence and ability through their participation in the theater. Kyla talked about how a really special performance where everything was kind of falling apart due to cast illnesses, but the cast and crew pulled together to put on a seamless show that was as impactful as ever.
She also talks about the things that are coming up on the horizon: Shows, camps, rehearsals, it’s all coming down the pipeline. Kyla was a great guest, thanks Kyla!

Fantasy author Brandon Sanderson is arguably the most successful, prolific, and best author of Epic Fantasy of our time, and almost all of his works of adult fiction take place in a shared universe that is referred to as “The Cosmere.” Sanderson fans have been poring over his novels for almost 20 years looking for the connections, Easter Eggs, and worldhopping characters in his Cosmere. As his career progressed and his published works increased, the frequency and significance of these Easter Eggs have increased to the point where in his latest novel, The Lost Metal, the Cosmere has been blown wide open.
Fans of Sanderson can delve deep into the lore and arcanum of the Cosmere worlds and magic systems to better understand what is going on and try to predict what is going to happen. One of the best at digging through the Cosmere Lore is Stephen Pond from the excellent Youtube channel R.A.F.O.
Steve and I totally get to nerd out together about Brandon, the Secret Projects,Mistborn, Stormlight Archive and almost everything. We talk about how Steve first came to discover Brandon and his journey along the way. He talks about some of the struggles when it comes to recruiting people to read these amazing books. Steve talks about how he even started to learn to love reading in the first place and how fantasy can be a mirror to teach us about the real world.
Steve talks about his favorite moments in the Cosmere, and we have some fun theory crafting and dreaming about what kind of Twinborn we wish we could be.
Honestly this was a dream episode for me. I love these books and I’ve been a huge fan of Steve’s for years. I hope you enjoy it.

Today I continue our series on the role of the modern church especially when it come to interacting with and reaching our current world and culture. We are talking to church leaders and have already talked to a Worship Leader, and today we are talking to a Senior Pastor.
Today we bring on the Senior Pastor of Faith on Hill Church in Portland Oregon, Adam Dolhanyk. Adam and I met maybe four years ago at one of the Church Collective One Day Conferences that Ryan Loche and I mentioned in last week’s podcast. For a number of years we also played fantasy football together through the 60 Cycle Hum Facebook group’s competition, 60 Cycle Hut, which I won one year. Adam has some seriously good taste in guitar gear, but we’re not here to talk about gear, today I want to talk about leading others to be more like Christ.
There’s no way around it. Adam was amazing. He was so insightful and knowledgeable, he was so passionate about reaching people, it was infectious. Adam starts by sharing his journey to becoming a pastor, starting with a powerful spiritual experience, then becoming a missionary, moving on to being a worship leader, and eventually being a pastor. Adam talks about shortcomings he has seen in other pastors and how he tries desperately to avoid those shortcomings in himself. He talks about how critical it is for Pastors to make sure that they are tending to their own spiritual needs.
Adam talks about how much work being a pastor is and that sometimes it means you might have to dig a ditch. He also talks about how as a Pastor it’s a really good idea to have many career skills to be otherwise employable, because you may need a second job, or your time as a pastor may run it’s course, or your time as a pastor may have seasons.
Adam is very open about the challenges and hurts of the pastoral life and how sometimes it means that you lose friends when people leave the church, or how people will attempt to damage your reputation to save theirs.
Adam is an awesome dude and I really wish we had the opportunity to hang out in person and talk and play some music, but instead I get this. But, I get to share it with you, and that makes me happy.

A little over a year ago I was trying so hard to get my guitar repair Youtube Channel off the ground when I saw someone share in the 60 Cycle Hum Facebook group something like “Hey, if you wouldn’t mind, you can check out my pedal demo. It’s a little different, and I’ve worked really hard on it.” Because I knew how much work Youtube Videos were, I thought to myself “what the heck? I’ll give her a click.”
I’m sure glad that I did because I was rewarded with a Gear Demo unlike anything I’d ever seen. Joan’s demos feel less like a typical Youtube product demo, and more like an episode of PeeWee’s Playhouse. This is, of course, intentional. Joan uses her background in graphic design to bring the pedals themselves to life and has the pedals describe their features. Joan’s playing and sounds are also amazing, but it’s the sense of humor and whimsy that make the whole surreal experience so different.
I’ve been wanting to have Joan on the podcast ever since I started making these things, and she did not disappoint. She shared some amazing stories, starting with how this whole crazy journey even started due to a life threatening illness. She thought that video could potentially be her last hurrah so she put her heart and soul into making something the way she wanted to make it.
She talked about how she puts in pop culture references from movies and video games, and that if you understand the references the videos hit on a much deeper level. She also explained that even if you don’t understand the easter eggs and inside jokes, it doesn’t matter because she’s putting those jokes into the video because they make her laugh.
She talks about how the whole reason that she even makes these videos is because of her drive to create is so strong, even it takes her months. She also talks about how she deals with internet trolls and how she finds it impossible to allow someone who spends thirty seconds typing a mean comment to ruin her attitude about something she spent three months working on.
Lastly, she talked about the ideas on the horizon. She talks about her upcoming video (which has now been released!!!) which incorporates a new characters and concept which she feels will open up her channel to review more than just pedals. She also talks about how she already has plans for the next video to start working on.
Joan was a great guest and I really hope that you will check out her Youtube Channel, even if you don’t consume “Guitar” content. Her videos are beautiful, smart, funny, and just really good content. Enjoy!

Today I am joined by a friend I have known for over 20 years, my buddy Ryan Loche. Our friendship goes all the way back to when my wife and I were courting and Ryan helped me record a love song I wrote in his home studio that was at his parents house. 20+ years later and my wife and I are still together, and Ryan is still helping musicians to do the things they are passionate about, especially when it comes to worshiping the Lord.
This episode is going to kick off a mini-series where we take a look at the role of the modern church in today’s culture. I want to talk to pastors, worship leaders, and other church leaders about the current climate out there today, how they are navigating it, and what they are doing to fulfill the Great Commission.
Ryan is now the Academic Director at The Belonging Co College in Nashville Tennessee and is pursuing his doctorate in Theology and his spent his career being a worship leader as well as training and equipping other worship leaders to do a better job of leader other believers into the throne room of grace. That may sound pretentious, but that is the burden that we carry when we decide to be worship leaders. Or at least, we should. And not everybody feels that way.
In this episode, we talk about it, the trials and challenges of leading worship. We talk about the struggle that every worship leader faces with trying to chose songs that reach every generation, and how the best way to address the concerns of people with complaints is by building relationships.
We talk about these things and a lot more, including my favorite event of the year which are the free one-day worship conferences that Ryan’s non-profit puts on every year (well, once the Covid madness is over). These conferences are an invaluable resource for worship teams and leaders for training and development that Ryan and his buddies put on for free.
I really enjoyed catching up with Ryan and to hear about all the amazing things that he had going on. Also, for his “cartoon theme song” answer, he recommended a cartoon that I had literally never heard about! Enjoy!

What can I say about today’s guest? She’s definitely my favorite person in the world. Today I am joined by my smart, thoughtful, hardworking, patient, supportive, loving, nurturing, beautiful, funny, talented, creative, resourceful, determined (and many other great adjectives), wife Desiree Miller. We have been married for over 17 years, which means we are getting close to tipping the scales to where we’ve been together for longer than we were apart, and that’s ok by me. But today, we’re not talking about marriage, we’re talking about education.
The reason is because Desiree is an accredited teacher, with a 4-year degree in liberal studies, who has always had a love and passion for teaching young learners. For twenty years, Desiree has taught in classrooms, been a substitute teacher, been a tutor both with small groups, and one-on-one, at a facility, in the home, and online. She has also volunteered to help in church youth groups and children’s ministries, and for the last four or five years, she has been homeschooling our children.
When we started homeschooling, we liked the freedom and flexibility that it provided for us to teach our child who had a learning difference in a way that allowed us to meet her needs more effectively . However, even within the increased freedom that homeschooling provides, Desiree found herself frustrated with the traditional systems of learning, and began, more and more, to learn about and follow the teaching principle called “Unschooling.”
If you’ve never heard of “unschooling” it’s basically this: Interest based learning, with parental support. What does that mean? The core principle is that children are naturally curious, and naturally want to learn and love to learn. However, almost every kid that you ask says that they “hate school.” One of the biggest reasons for this is because schools are designed to teach the average student the average information, so they can pass an average standardized test. We put kids in these little boxes that squash their interests, creativity, and individuality, and tell them that they HAVE to learn the things that we tell them to learn, in a predetermined order, whether they like it or not.
Unschooling means that we allow our learners to pursue their interests at their own pace, with parental support. What it looks like in real life is that that we’re always in school and we’re never in school. Every conversation is an opportunity for learning. We’ve found that this approach to education has greatly reduced the stress, frustration, and self-doubt associated with with schooling, both for the students and the teacher. We’ve also found that our learners have increased confidence, are more in-tune to their own preferences, and will actually seek out answers on their own.
We had a great discussion and I feel like you can really tell that our children’s education is something that we don’t take lightly. I hope you learn something, because our family always is! Today I finally get to return to a guitar adjacent topic as we get to talk about the Blues, and I get to do so with a super cool dude and fellow podcaster Pillip Carter from the 40 Watt Podcast. On his podcast, Phillip brings on guests to talk about their careers in guitar and music and he’s had some really amazing guests like Joey Landreth, Brian Wampler, Analog Mike Pierra, Arien Posen, Rhett Schull, Eric Daw (of of my heroes), and so many more people, it’s really worth listening to. One thing that I noticed when listening to his podcast was that in almost every episode, Phil mentions the blues. When he agreed to come on I asked if we could talk about the blues, and Phil did not disappoint.
Phil dropped some knowledge about the blues, from the origins to it’s simmering rivalry with Jazz. Phil talked about the rich history and culture of the blues and how it literally grew because of the instruments that were at hand. Phil talked about how blues is much more about how people try to define blues as one thing or the other, but in his opinion, the Blues is, at its’ core, is music played with emotion.
He talks about the challenges of presenting blues to modern audiences, and how this music has had a hard time being embraced by the people the who traditionally created it. He tells some great stories of some crazy blues gigs he played, and gives some tips on how to make the most of playing songs you don’t want to play.
He also talks about why he doesn’t believe in guilty pleasures and thinks you should like what you like. Then Phil busts out his guitar and gives us some great tips on For his Name Drop Card, Phil tells an amazing story about a time when someone at his gig offered to buy him a beer, and it turned out to be one of the most famous musicians of all time.

Brown is a brilliant stage actor, singer, amazing pianist, can play guitar, is a director and videographer, and an all-around cool dude. John uses the stage name John Adkinson and is currently ON TOUR with My Fair Lady as Colonel Pickering! I could have talked to John about a number of different things but I wanted to focus on Stage Acting and Theater.
We talked about how he got into acting and that as a youth he hosted a pretend game show, and that grew into his first roll in My Fair Lady, which has come full circle as he is now one of the leads in the show. John talks about the challenges of sometimes being on the road for six or nine months and how he keeps his sanity, stays healthy, stays in touch with his wife, and paces himself when he visits new cities. John talks about how tweaking the delivery of a line in order to get a bigger laugh is the ultimate reward. John then goes on to rattle off about a half dozen amazing horror stories of times when things went wrong, from missing props, to breaking props, to loosing entire the entire crowd because the local sports team scored in the playoffs.
We also talked about his almost-thirty-year-long career in acting and how it’s surprisingly come full circle and he’s now working again with an actor he worked with in 1993 and how much he looked up to that actor. John then gives some amazing advice for those who are just starting out in acting and how it’s more than just memorizing your lines.
In our “Get Into It” segment, John does some really clever acting exercises together with me that really opened my eyes to how much nuance there is in acting and even how much difference it makes just which word you emphasize in a sentence.
We wrap up with John telling us more about his current show My Fair Lady and another project he’s got in the works. John also gives us an amazing rendition of his favorite cartoon theme song, you’re going to love it!

Today I am joined by another friend who I have had the pleasure of watching grow from a talented but quiet youth, to a very talented adult who, after getting a degree in English, has now made his career in visual arts and videography. Jed Roberson is a videographer in LA who I’ve known for over fourteen years.
Jed and I talk about how even in the age of influencers and video game streamers, sometimes people don’t understand how he can make a career in the visual arts, especially in LA. We talk about what he loves best about doing videography, and why being in amazing locations with amazing people is so special. Jed also tells the story of a gig when everything went wrong, but he still had to try and get the shot.
Jed also shows us some amazing tricks that you can do with the cameras that we carry around in our pockets, and teaches us how to get better photos using all these available settings that we don’t even know are right there at our fingertips.

Josh and I have been coworkers for almost two years and, because he is so private, it was about four months before I found out that he was a semi-professional Prospector. At the time, and even at the time of recording this episode I didn’t know what the difference was between mining for gold, and Prospecting for gold. Talking to Josh on this podcast taught me a lot about the mentality of a prospector, how it is much more about the passion and love for nature and outdoors than the urge to strike it rich. We talked about some near misses with some bears and mountain lions, and about how his guilty pleasure is something he learned from his uncle and involves prospecting really early in the morning… and let’s just say… becoming one with nature.
In the hands-on section Josh shows us something I’ve never even heard of before, a process he calls “Mossing.” I found this process to be absolutely fascinating and the results were astounding! This is a trick that anyone can do, and to my surprise, we actually found a decent pan of gold in a relatively small patch of moss.
Lastly we talk to Josh about the plans he has for the future and why it may take a while, but he’s already got a partner in mind for his next big adventure.
I’ve been working on this particular episode for a long time, but it was delayed due to technical difficulties. We’re recording outside, so sometimes you hear birds and cars, but overall it was a pretty fun episode. I hope you enjoy.

Gabe Peterson is one of my best friends and has been for probably around a decade. One thing I like about Gabe is that he picks a thing that to hyperfixate on and just goes all in. When I decided to start this podcast I contacted Gabe and told him we could talk about watches or drones or banjos, he replied that he’s not really into those things very much any more, but he does know a lot about Scotch. I thought this would be perfect since I only drink Diet Pepsi, and it would be a good adventure.
I found Gabe not only to be hilarious, and a really good time, like he always is, but also extremely knowledgeable regarding Scotch, how it’s made, and basically all about it. Gabe told great stories about how the women in Michigan are are cold as the weather (and how that led him to start drinking Scotch). He talked about how, when push comes to shove, when he has a great Scotch, he’d rather just horde it all to himself instead of sharing it with a friend. He told an amazing story of visiting Scotland and seeing where one of his favorite Scotches were made and being able to see, smell, and taste in the air the same things that he tastes when he drinks the Scotch. Then Gabe took me on a journey of trying Scotch for the first time in my life, and five different ones. Some were not horrible, some were awful, and one was even borderline tolerable.
I had such a great time hanging out with Gabe and was reminded of why I love hanging out with him so much. But, I’ll definitely be passing on Scotch in the future, lol.

When I first was considering whether I should do a podcast or not and thinking of potential guests I could invite, Courtney Pong was one of the very first guests I thought of as an absolute ringer. She’s smart, savvy, hardworking, hilarious, extremely resourceful, and unbelievably knowledgeable. And on top of that, she’s all those things about the subject of Improv Comedy, which is incredibly niche, which is PERFECT for this show.
As highly as I thought of Courtney, I was aiming way too low because she was an absolutely spectacular guest with extraordinarily thorough and insightful answers to every question. This episode went longer than normal, but I guarantee you that it’s worth it.
Courtney talks about how even though it might sound cliche, she first stepped her toes into improv because she was following a boy that she liked, and how Improv didn’t really click for her until she saw a full show of Comedy Sports and when she did, watching them create a show from nothing was like watching real life magic. She talks about the challenges of being an AAPI (Asian American/ Pacific Islander), female, person of color, and business owner, and all of those things in a city (Boston) that has traditionally been unwelcoming to those all of those things. Meanwhile she is also working in a field (Comedy) that is predominantly White Male and also is traditionally unwelcoming to those things, and how she has to prove herself every time she steps on stage (and she does).
She talks about the words she does and doesn’t use when talking to potential clients about improv, and about why she believes “Yes, And…” to be the wrong principle to teach improvisers because it removes their own agency (can you believe it?). She talks about how she is helping people in her community to become better public speakers and how she recently became a… professor? (Wait, did I read that right? My buddy Courtney is now “Professor Pong?”) And she tells of her shining moment when she returned to her home base and answered the call to lead an event in front of a crowd of hundreds that was the culmination of almost 20 years of hard work.
Courtney blew my mind, and I know that you are gunna love her too!

Today I get to talk to a really fascinating person who understands Youtube, Algorithms, and Analytics way better than most people do, even though we have almost exactly the same name! Youtuber Adam Mellor joins the podcast and go deep into the topic of creating videos on Youtube, and we also discuss his excellent Facebook group “Youtubers Grow Together.” Don’t let his sub count fool you, Adam really knows what he’s talking about when it comes to Youtube, and it shows during our time talking together.
We talk about how being a Youtuber doesn’t mean that you can neglect your people skills, and also how you shouldn’t grow your channel by commenting on other peoples videos. We also talk about the mysterious algorithm and trying to understand what people want, more than what Youtube wants. Adam talks about a rewarding time when he put in a bunch of hard work and it paid off because the person he was talking about noticed and gave him a shout out. He also talks about how Youtube can be the most challenging platform to gain followers on, and how more isn’t always better (even though I think it is). Lastly we break down a recent short that had some success and try and determine why we think it might have hit so hard.
Adam is super interesting and has a lot of great insight, not only to the world of YouTube, but also to his excellent Facebook Group which is an excellent community where Tuber’s can find others feedback, support, and encouragement as they try to learn to become better Youtubers, and grow their channels. I’m a member and I really enjoy it!

Today I am joined by my friend Cianen Brenan who is fresh out of college with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a burning passion for playing and making guitars. Cianen and I have been playing guitar together for probably about six or seven years, ever since he was in high school. As much as I have influenced him, he has also been an influence to me.
In this episode we talk about adding a fancy switch to a telecaster that makes it feel like you are shifting gears in a car! We talk about his budget Squier with a neck pickup that sounds like garbage, but a bridge pickup that just sounds super gnarly in all the right ways. Then we start looking at some of his DIY homemade guitars and realize that all of his DIY guitars have a certain amount of Jank, and quite a bit of cool. From his EBMM inspired 10-foot guitar, that is a borderline failure (that he loves to play anyway), to his absolutely baller Jack Daniels Themed Les Paul Special Style guitar that absolutely rips.

One of my favorite people in the world joins me today to discuss a topic that will have our father bored to tears. My kid sister Bethany Miller joins me on our inaugural episode of the N+1 Podcast to discuss the art of Quilting and her passion for it. Bethany’s passion, experience, and expertise for quilting are all on full display in this episode, as is our love and affection for each other and also our rapport as we communicate with each other. Bethany is a truly gifted quilter and is a person with whom I have shared countless hours of witty and witless banter with over our many years on Earth as siblings. We’ve lived together, we’ve worked together, we’ve fought each other, we’ve fought together, we’ve argued about pop culture, and so in.
In this episode Bethany talks about quilt shows and how beautiful and tactile the booths can be at these shows, she talks about how, at its core, a quilt is just a blanket and everyone needs a blanket. She talks about how it’s ok to oversize your patchwork, and about how much she loves Spray Starch which for some reason they call Sizing Spray where she lives. She talks about how she Gasp sold our dead mother’s sewing machine, and how rotating cutting mats are massively overrated, and how she once gaslighted our mother out of spite, then out of spite made the quilt work and ended up with one of her best pieces. Lastly, Bethany talks about her “N+1”, what projects she plans to make in the future. A classic quilt, with some punk rock Bethany flair.
Bethany was the perfect first guest and because she has so many varying interests, she will definitely be a recurring guest on the show. It’s a niche world we’re living in. If Youtube taught us anything, it’s that no matter how specific or unique your interests are, there are thousands, and maybe even millions of others out there just as passionate as you are about whatever crazy thing you are interested in. My thing is guitars. I’ve been a musician for almost 30 years and there’s a few things I’ve learned while pursuing my obsession: 1) I absolutely love guitar gear, I love learning about it, talking about it, saving up for it, and yes spending my precious little disposable income on it. 2) I also learned that Guitar gear is expensive, and there’s no end to it. 3) Lastly, I learned from talking to other people about the things that they are interested in, that my experience with music gear is not unique to guitars.
Everyone’s hobby is really interesting to them, and every hobby is really expensive. In this podcast we bring in guests and go down the rabbit hole together as we talk about their obsession, the things they’ve collected, what they’re spending their money on, and where it all went wrong for them. And most importantly, we talk about what’s next in their journey, because as anyone who’s obsessed about their hobby knows, there’s always room for one more trophy in the case. N+1, the Podcast where we obsess about obsession.
