The best way to create freedom for your stylists is by offering them the freedom to choose their schedule while taking care of your end as a business owner and hiring enough people to fill the chairs. What obstacle is in your way and is it something that you created in your mind? Or is it real? How can we start to tip the scales for ourselves and our teams?
People pleasing is something that comes easy. It's something that is taught to us as new professionals in the industry. Give, Give, Give make sure you are matching peoples energy, personality, style. Do what ever you have to do to get all of the clients.
Today we talked to Coach Joy Lamay from Destroy The Hairdresser and owner of The Ministry Salon in LA, Ca about... Owners holding their employees hostage, coaching, personal responsibility, reactivity and a whole bunch of other shit that we are trying to combat in the hair industry today. We also talk about how to light peoples businesses on fire... not literally but sort of. Don't @ me.If you find yourself in a scenario or a situation that you feel stuck in or can't get out of. Reach out to me and start making proactive decisions for your career and get unstuck.
When we start to take accountability ourselves it empowers us to hold others accountable and it yields incredible results. Take a dive with me and look at how we can take a long hard look at our behaviors and how it's directly correlated with the results that we are seeing in our businesses.
Are you busy but just not seeing the financial results that you hoped for? Are you exhausted and feel yourself spinning your wheels in your business and not sure where to go? As an industry, we've started to create space in our schedules and the uncomfortable truth that as we make these changes we might not be as traditionally busy, but that doesn't mean that we aren't earning as much. How do we get comfortable with the stillness in our schedules, how do we use it more proactively and how can we use it to be more creative.
Check out this episode with Jaime Pappenfuss! Do you have a hard time saying 'no'. Saying no is hard for people pleasers like myself but what I have learned is the more that you say no, the more you can say yes to the opportunities that really will impact your life the most. This podcast is about saying no to the wrong things so you can say yes to all of the right things.
Hierarchy is something that exists, but there is no space for it in our industry. We don't have to talk down to our staff to make sure they know where they stand in the business. Chances are newer stylists know they are newer stylists and there is plenty of growth to be had from now and to where they are going. Release the pet names in your salon. Unlock your leadership. Move into the future and be the change that you want to see.

Have you been wanting to take control of your business? Have you been wanting more predictable income? By removing gratuity we can take control of our income and what people pay us. We have to stop relying on tips and gratuity for us to live and make a living. It's holding us back from making the income of our dreams because we are basing on something that is so unpredictable.
If you're looking to transform your business and remove bad business practices find me on social media and at www.destroythehairdresser.com/ethan if you want to start 1:1 coaching today.
If you're feeling stuck it might be time to shake things up in your business.
This episode is all about hourly pricing and the most common questions that I get from hairdressers before they make the switch into hourly pricing. It's a philosophy and mindset change with pricing. We are taking responsibility over what our time is worth and how we want the client interactions to look like. If you have more questions head over to www.destroythehairdresser.com/ethan to start coaching and to transform your business today.
If you're trying to figure out what you want your hourly pricing to be based on the amount of money that you want to make in a year. Here it is...!
Ideal Income (divided by) Amount of weeks you work (divided by) Amount of days you want to work (divided by) the amount of hours you want to work a day (times) 2
IE. $100,000 / 48 weeks = 2,083.33 / week
$2,083 Week / 4 Days a week = 520.83 / day
$520.83 Day / 7 Hours = $74.40 / hr
$74.40 x 2 (expenses, taxes, rent, etc) = $148.80
This is your formula play around with the amount of money, weeks, days, or hours and see what it is that you need to do for your business to have a more reliable income.
You're taking more than money from your clients if you say the phrase "I just want my clients to feel good!" Their vision of themselves doesn't have anything to do with you. The more you think that the more of your ego that you'll have to destroy in the future. The real questions we need to be asking ourselves is what am I doing? or what am I not doing? That can bring me more happiness and fulfillment in my business.
I'm here to help you transform the way that you see the role that you play in your own business in hopes that you can share this with other artists to take back control of their businesses to not feel so damn burnt out or undervalued.

Let's find a way to modernize how we train new stylists in the industry. I believe that we need to take a look at how we bring new people into the industry and what will be beneficial to them and what will keep them more fulfilled and in the industry for longer. We see the turnover rate for new stylists leaving the industry is insanely high! I think that the way that we introduce new stylists to the industry is way too focused on "What we did" as opposed to what it is that the new stylists need to do to stay inspired, to keep learning, to stay engaged, and to earn that feeling of fulfillment. We need to focus less on what we need other people to do for us as leaders and focus on how we can show up for the people in our businesses so that they can create fulfillment for themselves. This conversation is going to go so much deeper than this podcast.
If you're interested in learning more please head over to https://www.destroythehairdresser.com/ethan and hit skip the line to start transforming your apprenticeship programs today.
If you enjoyed the podcast today please like, share, and subscribe to the podcast so you never miss an episode.
Are you afraid of hiring new stylists? Are you afraid of the cost? or perhaps you are afraid of what that might look like for you and your salon? Have you always wanted to and never known where to start? I would start by identifying what your stylists look like. We need to find a way to level the playing field between our stylists that are working behind the chair and the stylists that are coming into the industry. They don't have to sit and suffer for 12 months while you find ways to fill in that time because your apprentice program was 12 months.
Come with me and let's talk about all the ways we are going to modernize apprentice programs!
Creating something new is never perfect. I spent countless hours structuring what I thought was the perfect apprenticeship program. Turns out it wasn't at all it lacked one big thing. Consciousness, the thing that I created was all based around the fear of what if? And I turned it into the program that I went through because it was the only thing that I knew.
I'm here to tell you that things can be different. There are different ways and you don't have to take responsibility for the success or failure of people, but you do have to take responsibility for giving them the tools that they need to help themselves and be successful learners.
Stop giving shovels to people that are trying to clean their windows. We continue to give our stylists the wrong tools because that's what we were given as young hairstylists. We need to arm them, with the tools they need to be successful in the things that they want to be successful in. Our vision for them doesn't matter, their fulfillment will only come from themselves and that comes from building relationships and understanding what that fulfillment looks like to that stylist.
Let's help people reach their full potential in a new expansive way that will feel uncomfortable.

Welcome to Shifted Season 3, the podcast that empowers salon owners and beauty professionals! Are you struggling to train your new staff fresh out of beauty school? It's time to break free from the outdated notion that new stylists need a year-long apprenticeship program to gain confidence. In reality, such programs can hinder their growth and make them doubt their abilities.
It's time to stop the cycle of forcing new stylists to do services they dislike, attend unpaid educational meetings, work seven days a week at the salon, and perform menial tasks like cleaning toilets or scrubbing Kathy's hydraulic chair with a toothbrush.
Join us as we challenge the status quo and explore ways to revolutionize salon apprenticeship programs. We'll share insights, strategies, and success stories that will help you elevate your program to new heights.

In this podcast I'm suggesting that we approach it differently. What if we listen to our inner self? What would happen if we took a step back to ask not what clients want, our bosses want or our mentors. What if we are forced to ask ourselves what does success look like to me? What do I find beautiful? How can I create that beauty to share with people that find beauty in that exact way?

Where did your habits come from? Have you ever found yourself defending a belief and thought to yourself? "Why am I so animated about this?" Where did this belief come from? Is it possible that being this charged about something is holding me back from growth? Let's talk about real risk taking and take a look at where our beliefs come from and how we can use that information to transform our businesses.
How is it that you create your to-do list? Is it something you you put thought and effort into or it just a compilation of things that you put on there so that you feel busy and accomplished? Today we're going to talk about how to streamline your to-do list in order to use it as the tool that you always wanted it to be.
Money is something that we deal with every day. It's something that we use all of the time, it comes and goes. Something that we don't always check in with is how we feel about money. If we think about money positively or negatively. We so often forget to check in with ourselves that we forget that money evokes emotions in us that drive our decision-making. Today we're talking about how money affects our decision making and how you can become more aware of it and use it more proactively.
This episode sheds some light on the limiting beliefs surrounding the cost of hiring and training a new employee. In order to move into proactivity as a leader we need to start finding out the real tangible information, then asks ourselves Why? How? and When can I change things for the better. We talk about the cost of dated systems and what we need to do to update them for the future of our industry.
This weeks episode talks about 5 levels of accountability that will help you consistently hold all of your team members accountable. This will ensure that the focus is always on them and their growth. If you're struggling with finding consistent ways to hold your team accountable this podcast is a MUST.
Today we will be talking about how through accountability and leadership we can begin to shape and breathe life into the salon culture that we've always wanted to create. By looking at goal setting in a different light and really connecting with our staff we can begin to change the way that our employees communicate with not only us the salon leaders, but each other as well.
There is some freedom in knowing that you are the cause of all of your new stylist woes. If you're the cause of the problem you can be the cause for the change too. Here are 3 things that you can implement today to improve your salon culture and apprentice programs.
Let's talk about something that will start to elevate and change the way that your staff operates in your salon. We need to open the door for people to be limitless and offer them the freedom that is necessary to really start taking proactive risks on the way to their own version of success.
Today, we go deep into what is the missing link in our training programs for our new staff. What's wrong and why the focus needs to change? We need to focus on the individual and their definition of fulfillment and growth.
Let's talk about 3 things that are wrong with traditional Apprentice Programs and what we need to do in order to change them to allow growth within our industry.
Paying your dues is an archaic way of operating any business. Yet we still see it in salon structures all of the time. We have training programs that are based off of fears and our previous education. It's time that we unlock a new way of thinking when it comes to training new stylists. Helping them with critical thinking, personal responsibility and the responsibilities of freedom. Come talk with me about all of the toxic ways that you paid your dues in the industry.
These are the foundations of my program and will help to change the way that we view new stylists coming into the industry. These concepts will also change the way that you lead your teams within your salon and help challenge some of the things that you do in your salon now. We will be talking about core values, most desired feelings, fear, personal responsibility and emotional intelligence. Enjoy.
