In a very special recording of AAHKS Amplified, three leading orthopaedic surgeons Zachary C. Lum, DO, Obinna O. Adigweme, MD and Adam A. Sassoon, MD, MS talk candidly on how they approach, address and respond to this question often asked by their patients “Do I Need A Hip or Knee Replacement?”
Although this seems like a fairly simple question to respond to, it’s actually very difficult to answer and responses vary from patient to patient. In this recording, each surgeon shares how they carefully evaluate their patients to provide them with the best course of action as it relates to their health. With this being an elective surgery, they share how they take very careful measures to provide them with medical guidance that will benefit them as the patient and improve quality of life overall. We’re truly excited to bring to you our latest recording on AAHKS Amplified. In this recording, we had the wonderful opportunity to hear the patient’s perspective from two arthroplasty patients. Both underwent hip and/or knee replacement surgery and candidly shared their experiences in a symposium at the 2024 AAHKS Spring Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, moderated by AAHKS Diversity Advisory Board (DAB) Chair, Muyibat A. Adelani, MD.
Dr. Adelani spoke with Thomas Pattillo and Chrissie Smith to learn what their journeys were like. You’ll learn what challenges they faced, what their selection process was for picking an orthopaedic surgeon, how they prepared for surgery and what weight loss requirements were imposed on them to begin the surgery process.

At the 2023 AAHKS Annual Meeting, the chair of the Digital Health & Social Media Committee Shaun P. Patel, MD and Andrew M. Schwartz, MD sat down with Jeffrey J. Barry, MD to discuss his paper, uniquely titled “Early Outcomes of “Lemon Dropped” Complex Primary Arthroplasty Patients to a Tertiary Care Center.” In this podcast, Dr. Barry shared that his study was comprised of patients that were considered “complex or complicated” patients and rejected elsewhere for various reasons, whether it was for medical or surgical reasons. His findings indicated that resource burdens doubled with these patients – double the time in the OR, double the time spent in the ED afterwards and double the length of stay time.

At the 2023 AAHKS Annual Meeting, the chair of the Digital Health & Social Media Committee Shaun P. Patel, MD and Dustin J. Schuett, DO sat down with Joshua C. Rozell, MD to discuss his paper presented at the meeting on how there’s additional stress on surgeons who peform surgery on patients with an elevated BMI. In Dr. Rozell’s study, he showed that additional work is required and placed on surgeons who perform these kinds of surgeries versus your standard primary knee or hip replacement surgery. The goal was to quantify and provide data showing this.

Chalmers, MD to discuss their paper presented at the meeting on Does Melatonin Improve Subjective Sleep Quality after TKA? A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial.
This study was ignited from hearing so many patients complain about their quality of sleep following surgery. Drs. LeBrun and Chalmers noticed large improvements over the years in pain control, range of motion, function and things like that, but very little relating to improving sleep for patients.

Dr. Mont posed very interesting questions that ignited a healthy conversation such as what are the major issues in diversity, are things going in the right direction and what can surgeons do from an educational standpoint to help?

Last year, Dr. Krueger sat down with James I. Huddleston, III, MD to discuss the release of the 10th annual report of the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR). In this recording, they talked about the conception of the registry in 2012, and how it began with surgeons wanting to get an idea of what was being placed in patients in the United States.
In the most recent registry release, there’s reporting of over 3 million primary and revision hip and knee replacements performed in the United States at 4500 hospitals and ambulatory health centers. A great deal of data was collected, so what was intended, was achieved. Dr. Huddleston also discussed how AJRR works, the updates made to the registry and how they are consistently making improvements so more surgeons can contribute. Springer, MD, was joined by Dr. Nitin Goyal and Dr. William Hamilton to discuss how grant money from the program would be allocated to targeted areas of improvement such as patient optimization and high-risk/at-risk patients.
UPDATE: Since recording the podcast, 58 successful applications from programs across the United States was submitted. AAHKS was able to distribute $20,000 to each program. The funding received will facilitate long-term goals of standardizing curriculums and improving training nationally.
