With a wealth of experience from over four decades as a summer camp director, Michael stepped into a new arena fueled by his personal journey navigating his son’s gaming addiction. This heart-led venture culminated in the creation of Reset Summer Camp, a beacon for families wrestling with the challenge of screen and gaming addictions.
What stands out about Michael’s approach is his emphasis on digital detox not as an act of deprivation but as a pathway to nurturing healthy family dynamics and embracing our role as parents and educators in this narrative. BIOGRAPY
Michael Jacobus is an internationally recognized author, child development specialist, and camp professional. He has an extensive background in youth-serving nonprofits, staff training, operations, administration, and outdoor education. Michael has been a Camp Director for over 30 years.
In the summer of 2018, Michael started the world’s first clinical summer camp program for teens and adolescents suffering from unhealthy screen time and social-media overuse habits and gaming addiction, Reset Summer Camp for Digital Detox & Life Skills. The program is planning an international expansion in the summer of 2022.

Welcome to the new year! Today is January 7th. Still going strong with your resolutions for the year? It’s a common occurrence that many people break their New Year’s resolutions shortly after making them. Statistics suggest that only a fraction, anywhere between 8% and 28%, actually manage to keep their resolutions. As homeschool parents, our resolutions often revolve around our children, which can add an extra layer of stress. That’s why today, I’d like to introduce a different approach. Rather than setting resolutions, consider embracing intentions for the year ahead. I also share what MY intention is for the year and how and why to get your kids involved.

It's the beginning of December, and if you're like me, you're trying to figure out last-minute gifts. When my kids were growing up, I would always have a pile of books next to their stockings. The entire time I've been raising my kids, I've been trying to instill a love of books in them. One way I did that was to get them lots of books each Christmas. It was just easier to put a big pile of books next to their stocking rather than wrap them all up.So, I thought today that I would share some of the books that I have read this year because if I left it open to all of the books that I've read in the youth or young adult section, it would just take too long. I added a couple of classics in, too. I've been reading some young adult books with my students this year that have really stood out for me. Isn't it exciting? December's here. We have all kinds of exciting activities that we're doing. We are going sledding and having snow days and, you know, going to see Santa, if that's your thing. We have church activities and all kinds of family that are going to be visiting. And additional fancy meals that you're supposed to put together. And oh, by the way, on top of that, educate our kids.Right.I don't know about you, but I have always loved December, but... Being really vulnerable here... It's also when I kind of had a couple of breakdowns over the years.It can be a crazy, crazy month, especially when we have already taken on so much more just by taking the responsibility of educating our kids at home. So, this is my little "Yeah, have fun for December, but take care of yourself" episode.When my kids were little, I would often take the entire month off of school for December. So we would not do regular school. Now, that didn't mean that learning wasn't happening. It was happening all over the place. We were doing so many different things. But it just looked a lot different, and it lowered my stress a little bit by doing that. I've been researching technology and its pros and cons and thought I'd share some of the "aha's" I've had about Artificial Intelligence. People have calmed down a little about AI, but when ChatGPT first came out, there were so many fearful posts and articles. I know there is still a lot of misunderstanding and confusion about it.If we look back at history, there have been many times when new innovations are vilified because people don't know how to use them effectively. Once we get over that hump, they just become normal. Just in my lifetime, I've seen computers, the internet, and cell phones change the way we live.When it comes to education, AI is something homeschoolers can embrace. My son and I attended a TEDx yesterday, and I found a theme running through most of the presentations - the importance of taking risks. Have you ever gone to a TEDx? You've probably watched a TED talk on their website or on your TV. They are on YouTube as well. My favorite is the one by Sir Ken Robinson titled "Do Schools Kill Creativity?"But back to yesterday and the theme. The presenters weren't talking about education, but I could see how so much of what they shared was applicable to our lives as educators and parents. NEW! Realizing Genius Connections – Books and Beyond!Have you ever had the experience where several things happen, and all of a sudden, you are making all these connections? You are reading a book, and you remember what someone said in a webinar or course or another book, and everything just makes a little bit more sense.
That happens to me on a regular basis, and the first thing I want to do is share it with someone! I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while and this week, I finished a book and attended a webinar and … BAM! I was hit with some genius connections! I just had to share!
The book I read is “So Good They Can’t Ignore You” by Cal Newport. And when I say read, I really mean listened to. I learned a long time ago that I can get through a lot more books if I listen to them. I usually listen to them at about 1.5x speed. (I got my boys hooked, too – they can listen to it at 2.0x – a little too fast for me!) Sometimes I will purchase the physical book as well (after I’ve listened to it). These are usually the books that I want to use as sources for research. I also use Reading Graphics as a resource. It is meant to be used as a source for book summaries. I use it mostly for notes on books that I’ve listened to that I don’t need to dive deep into.
But back to my connections…
One of the things I liked about Newport’s book is that he brought up several books that I’ve dived deep into! Like Drive by Daniel Pink and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. I quote these books in several of my presentations on homeschooling. These were the first Genius Connections I made with Newport’s book.
I made another one yesterday when I attended Tatiana Fallon’s webinar on “Leadership Education: What it is and Why it Works.” Tatiana was raised and homeschooled with the Leadership Education philosophy and is now homeschooling her kids using it as well. Throughout her presentation, she made connections. From her connections, I was able to make more.

If you've ever attended one of my presentations, you'll understand the central role my mother plays in my life. She isn't just a parent; she's my confidante, my mentor, and a great source of inspiration. Her influence on me is immeasurable, and the knowledge she has shared has formed the bedrock upon which I build my work. I genuinely appreciate her willingness to participate in this interview, as it allows me to share her wisdom and insight with a wider audience.
One of the most extraordinary aspects of my mother is her innate ability to connect with children. Kids are drawn to her like a magnet, and it's not by chance. She possesses a unique gift for speaking to them in a way that makes them feel heard and valued. She takes the time to listen to their thoughts, dreams, and concerns, forging genuine connections that leave a lasting impact. It's no surprise that children find in her not just a friend but a trusted mentor.
During our time together, my mother and I delved into a wide range of topics. We explored the various methods she employed to nurture the individual talents and passions of not only myself but also some of my siblings. Her guidance and support were instrumental in shaping our journeys and helping us discover our own unique potential. Her unwavering belief in our abilities encouraged us to strive for greatness.
One particularly memorable part of our discussion was her "3-13-17 talk." This insightful conversation centered around pivotal stages in a child's life—ages 3, 13, and 17—and the guidance parents should provide during these critical times. Her advice in this regard was not only enlightening but also profoundly practical, offering a roadmap for parents navigating the complexities of child-rearing.
Additionally, my mother shared her valuable advice for grandparents actively involved in homeschooling. Her insights into this role emphasized the importance of intergenerational learning and the unique contributions that grandparents can make to their grandchildren's education.

BOOKS: The Teenage Brain: A Neuroscientist's Survival Guide to Raising Adolescents and Young Adults by Frances Jensen & Amy Nutt
I had the distinct privilege of interviewing Dr. Phil Hickman this week, which I consider a genuine honor. Given my dedication to homeschooling and my consistent message about the pressing issues within the public school system, it's not often that I have the opportunity to converse with individuals with such extensive experience in that field. Dr. Hickman boasts a comprehensive background in academia, having fulfilled nearly every role imaginable, ranging from a teacher's assistant to an advisor to the federal government!
One particularly intriguing point he raised was, "Education remains the sole industry permitted to operate with a failure rate." I truly appreciate his commitment to addressing this matter.
What really got my attention was his current project, an educational application named PlaBook. This innovative platform leverages AI to assess students' proficiency in reading and mathematics. Its gamified approach ensures that it captures children's interest, transforming learning into something they eagerly embrace. Moreover, it equips parents and educators with real-time data, enabling them to tailor their instructional methods accordingly.
Shifting gears to the realm of artificial intelligence, our discussion encompassed the trajectory of education and the necessary shifts in emphasis. Dr. Phil eloquently delved into the idea that the careers our kids will have haven't even materialized yet. This begs the question: How can we adequately equip them for this unforeseen future? I don't know about you, but the idea of having to teach upper-level math to my kids made me question our decision to homeschool. It didn't STOP me. I decided I would figure it out when I got there. But math was not my favorite subject. Teaching it to little kids is fun! "How many red M&Ms are there? What happens if we eat 2?" type of math I can handle no problem. And then we throw in the non-traditional learner, and the math gets even more challenging to teach! My three older kids could take a textbook and learn whatever (even if they didn't like it), but my youngest two, especially with math, needed something different. And, to be honest, I wish I had been able to do better in math with all of them.
What I needed to find is someone who loved math and understood learning styles. And that is Mr. D and everyone who works at Mr. D Math.
I wish I had found them years ago!
Dennis DiNoia, M.A.Ed, has been immersed in education for over 30 years. He holds an M.A. in Education from the University of South Florida. He is affectionately known to his students as “Mr. D.” His online programs have students across the entire United States, and Mr. D has worked with students on five different continents! Mr. D is a pioneer in “live online class,” which he began leading in 2013. I had the pleasure of chatting with Vickie Amerine, where she shared her journey from being an advocate for her special needs daughter to becoming an educator who changed the school system in her district. I highly recommend that you listen to this episode, as Vickie’s story is truly inspiring.
When Vickie’s daughter was diagnosed with special needs, she quickly realized that she needed to become her daughter’s advocate. She had to learn how to navigate the complex world of special education, and it was a challenge to get her daughter the support she needed. But Vickie didn’t give up. She knew that her daughter deserved the best education possible, and she was determined to make it happen.
One thing that Vickie emphasized throughout the podcast episode was the importance of communication. She had to learn how to effectively communicate with educators and find common ground. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. By working together, Vickie and the educators were able to create a plan that worked for her daughter.
Vickie’s experience as an advocate led her to pursue a special education credential. She wanted to be able to help other parents and their children navigate the system. Vickie’s background as a parent gave her a unique perspective as an educator. She was able to better understand and serve special needs students.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Holly Armstrong, the founder of Wings 4 the Gifted, on my podcast. Hey there! I’m excited to share with you an upcoming podcast episode where I chat with Mandy Frost, an academic coach who partners with parents to coach students.

My time in school was a rocky road. I was picked on and harassed, and not all of my teachers were stellar. Honestly, I regret not having been homeschooled instead. But in this week’s episode, I had a chance to sit down and chat with Tatiana Fallon, who, at the ripe age of five, decided never to go back to school again. She was homeschooled and now homeschools her own four children. With her personal experience in overcoming dyslexia, she has valuable insights into helping others do the same. Tatiana has been homeschooled her whole life. Well, almost. She told her mom at age 5 after four months of kindergarten, she would not go back to school. She struggles with dyslexia and did not learn to read until she was twelve. She started teaching at age 14. She is the creator of the LEMI Key of Liberty Project and the Sword of Freedom project. She has traveled around the US speaking and training. She worked as a citizen lobbyist from age 15-20 and has been striving to serve her county in any way possible. She is now a stay-at-home mom homeschooling her four children. She has lived in Latvia, Virginia, Utah, and now calls Kentucky her home. She is a Leadership Education Mentoring Institute trainer and the co-host of the LEMIWorks! Podcast.

Nate Noorlander, from the Nomadic Professor, joined me for this week’s episode. The Nomadic Professor is an online, non-partisan, high school history courses that teach students the core narrative and all of its accompanying skills: taking notes, making original judgments, reasoning with evidence, reading between the lines, following a rubric, writing a defensible argument, working with bias, and much, much more.

In college I double-majored in philosophy and history teaching, then moved to Beijing, China, to teach IGCSE and A Level history at the Cambridge International Curriculum Center of Beijing Normal University. I also spent time touring in India and trekking in Nepal.
Worn out by the Beijing air I moved back to Utah with my family and taught English and history at Mountainville Academy, and then the American International School of Utah. At AISU I developed mini-courses in boredom and awareness, based on Heidegger’s ideas about technology, and Nicholas Carr’s ideas about what the internet does to our brains.
Worn out this time by life in the beautiful mountain west I returned to Beijing, where I taught IB history, IB English, and Theory of Knowledge at the Yew Chung International School of Beijing. When Covid-19 hit I was coaching the boys basketball team and gearing up for our end-of-season tournament in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The trip was canceled, my family just made it out of Beijing on a flight three times its usual cost, and I stuck it out in the shuttered city for another six weeks. When life didn’t change, I left too. Since then it’s been all history with the Nomadic Professor.

Over the years, I’ve been tempted to enroll my kids in etiquette classes. I always thought it was about manners and which fork to use. Somehow it never got done. It didn’t seem important enough. BOY, WAS I WRONG!

Mr. James is a passionate educator on a mission. Learning is FUN. Mr. James PROVES it!
Disappointed with the experience older children had in the traditional education system, Mr. James sought to make a change. He knew there had to be a better way than the fun-leaching strategies and overbearing style utilized in far too many classrooms. With an engaging presentation style and exciting curriculum, he has successfully inspired thousands of children to actively seek out information and take delight in learning new things.
Mr. James has extensive experience teaching STEM curriculum in a variety of settings to homeschool, charter, and public-school students. He has become exceedingly popular in the community and is known for his passion, enthusiasm, and dynamic personality. Mr. James’ experience includes a duel-major in Elementary Education and Special Education, but perhaps even more valuable is his extensive experience in sales. Knowing how to communicate and engage with your audience is invaluable, and those years of developing those skills have paid off for his students. Mr. James has built a successful education business in Southern California and is a steadfast advocate for school choice.

The BergerMan spent decades figuring out what he wanted to do when he grew up.
What he figured out was that he wanted to do exactly what every Public-School teacher had repeatedly told him not to do.
He liked talking in class. He talked a lot. Now, instead of telling him to be quiet, people pay him to talk. He talks all of the time. He’s a Public Speaker at conferences and other events. He makes YouTube videos.
He is not alone in this revelation. Several of his friends are very successful doing exactly what their report cards told them not to do.
