Today we talk to Caterina Giorgi, the CEO of the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE) about the crucial role FARE plays in Australia in commissioning research on alcohol harm and advocating for essential changes to Australia’s alcohol laws and policies. We cover a lot in this episode, including the alarming ways alcohol advertising targets young kids, how pervasive alcohol marketing is, the destructive effects of alcohol consumption across different demographics and the significant role alcohol plays in family violence. Caterina explains the manipulative tactics of alcohol companies, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the powerful lobbying efforts that resist necessary regulatory changes to protect our most vulnerable communities from alcohol harm. We also discuss the changing landscape of alcohol consumption in Australia, celebrating the positive trends among young people who are increasingly choosing an alcohol-free lifestyle but also the troubling increase in alcohol-related health issues among older generations. Listen as we highlight FARE’s Voices of Change program, the success stories of community activism, and the ongoing need for advocacy to create healthier environments for everyone. Hear why organisations like FARE are crucial in amplifying the voices of those living with the consequences of alcohol harm and countering the influence of Big Alcohol and advocating for public health.

Ever wondered how ADHD manifests differently in children and adults, or between males and females? In our latest episode, we promise to provide those answers and more with the help of our returning guest, Faye Lawrence. Now a specialized coaching therapist, Faye shares her journey of being diagnosed with ADHD in 2022 and offers a unique perspective on understanding the three types of ADHD: inattentive, hyperactive, and combined. Get ready to uncover the high heritability of ADHD and its intersections with other neurodiverse conditions like autism and OCD.

The journey to an ADHD diagnosis is often fraught with challenges, from navigating referrals to battling the shortage of specialists. We'll discuss these hurdles in depth and explore the complex relationship between ADHD and self-medication. Faye sheds light on how neurotransmitter deficiencies drive individuals to seek external stimuli, often leading to self-medication behaviors tied to feelings of low self-esteem and failure. Our conversation also tackles the potential for overdiagnosis and the varied experiences people face when seeking a diagnosis.

Awareness of neurodiversity is slowly reshaping societal structures, but there's still much to be done. Traditional work environments can be especially tough for those with ADHD and similar conditions. We advocate for more inclusive settings, referencing Tom Hartman's hunter-gatherer theory to highlight how modern environments may not suit neurodiverse individuals. Faye shares practical advice for managing ADHD's everyday challenges, from sensory sensitivities to the hidden toll on high-performing individuals. Tune in for an enlightening discussion on ADHD and addiction, ending with a message of understanding and compassion that aims to shift perceptions and promote a more inclusive society.

  • This is not the best topic to listen to on speaker with your kids in the background!

** If the topic of sex is triggering for you, then perhaps hit pause and move to another episode

OK, SOBER SEX… Let’s talk about it. Why?! Because it comes up a lot. Discreetly and tentatively at first but it presents as a major issue often when alcohol is removed from your life. Also, if drinking has been part of your whole sexual history then you may not even know if you enjoy sex at all! Does any of this ring true for you? Have you only ever had sex while under the influence? You and your partner met and bonded over drinking, drinking was part of the courtship, drinking and sex was a regularly thing, or you are freaking out about sober sex, like freaking out! Geez – I was… So again, let’s talk about sober sex! So… sober sex. Why is this important? Because it is about connection and we know how important quality connection is to sustaining an alcohol-free life. It’s the opposite to addiction. Moreover, quality connection and intimacy with your partner, the person that we are most close with in the world and the person we spend most of our time with is important. There are exceptions to this but if this is the case for you then listen on. Uncomfortable feelings created through lack of connection and issues with intimacy can feel stressful and can create urges to reach for alcohol. So best to address this head on. Let's do this....

When Emma Gilmour of Hope Rising Coaching joined us, she didn't just bring a big laugh (and that we did many of!) — she brought an open conversation about her recent autism diagnosis, raising neurodivergent children, perimenopause, giving up alcohol and finding calm in a chaotic world! Sigh... Emma is just awesome.

We talk about parenting children who experience the world differently, how Emma's journey to sobriety unearthed her authentic introverted self, and the ways in which society's extroverted ideals can obscure our true natures.

This heart-to-heart also spotlights the elephant in the room: the PTSD-like stress parenting can impose, and why acknowledging this reality is vital for our emotional health. Emma's insights into the often misunderstood manifestations of autism in women, and the relief that comes with understanding and resources, form a lighthouse for those on similar paths.

In fact, Emma runs a 'Be the Lighthouse', a group coaching program offering support for those seeking an alcohol-free life. We leave you with the understanding that whether you're a parent to a neurodivergent child, re-evaluating your relationship with alcohol, or in pursuit of deeper self-care, this episode stands as a testament to the transformative journeys we're capable of embarking upon.

It’s underground. It’s shameful. It’s dangerous and it is happening in households all around us. Many hiding their drinking look great on the outside (for a while, for years even) and many do not know why they are doing it. They want out, but it’s a really hard behaviour to fess up to. It’s very personal, runs deep and very confusing.

In this episode, we delve into the often-overlooked issue of secret drinking. We chat about the reasons behind this behaviour and its potential consequences. From using alcohol as a coping mechanism to feeling misunderstood, we uncover the triggers that contribute to hidden drinking at home. Join us as we explore the importance of self-expression and radical honesty, and learn the steps you can take to break free from the burden of secret drinking. Whether you're looking for guidance or simply seeking to understand this silent struggle, this episode offers hope and insight to help you on your journey towards living an authentic and fulfilling life.

Secret drinking… can be as ‘small’ as:

👉 Sneaking an extra cheeky glass without your partner knowing

👉 Drinking a glass or 2 before a party and denying it

👉 Hiding your glass (in the pantry? Behind the toaster?)

and it can turn into:

👉 Hiding a bottle (under the sink? in a drawer?)

👉 Hiding empties (and waiting until bin day)

👉 Drinking in a coffee cup to hide the alcohol

👉 Drinking home alone and denying it

Then grow into something quite serious, like

👉 Drinking in the morning when your partner and kids leave

The list goes on.

Hiding things, being dishonest about your drinking, no matter how small at first, can lead to feelings of emptiness (as no one truly knows who you are and what you are doing - even yourself) which contributes to the cycle.

Sneaky habits around alcohol are of course red flags. So, of course, best to catch this one early.

Please send us any questions or topics you would like us to address,

Embarking on an introspective expedition, we're joined by the insightful Health and Wellbeing Coach, Sarah Rustbatch, who shares a candid narrative of her personal evolution from the grips of teenage drinking to the liberation of sobriety. Her story is set against the backdrop of Northern England's culture where alcohol is woven into the fabric of social bonding, from school years to the professional world. As we traverse Sarah's experiences, you're invited to contemplate the profound impact of cultural expectations on our choices and the courage it takes to break free from them.

With raw vulnerability, Sarah unfolds the chapters of her life that led her from being the life of the party to a beacon of hope as a sober coach. The conversation journeys through the landscapes of London's demanding corporate scene to the life-altering move to Perth, where the challenges of starting a family and isolation catalysed a pivotal transformation in her relationship with alcohol. Sarah's revelation and subsequent path to sobriety are not just her story—they reflect a silent struggle faced by many, offering a beacon of hope and a roadmap for those navigating similar crossroads.

Concluding our episode is a celebration of Sarah's triumph in authorship, "Beyond Booze: How to Create a Life You Love Alcohol-Free," a testament to the rich, fulfilling existence that awaits beyond the haze of alcohol. Her book embodies the essence of self-discovery and personal growth that sobriety can ignite, especially when faced with a partner who drinks or the pursuit of joy and purpose in the sober life. Sarah's journey—echoed in her words and in her book—is an invitation to all listeners to explore the depths of their own strength and the beauty of a life unchained from societal norms.

Jolene Park joins us this episode to talk about the importance of prioritising the nourishment of your nervous system and neurotransmitters when quitting drinking. Jolene explains why a “bottom up” approach focussing on rewiring, replenishing and repairing the nervous system is vital to the success of drinking less long term. Do you drink to relax, destress, numb anxiety or soothe an activated nervous system (most do!)? Then it is essential to incorporate resources to calm the nervous system into your sober practice. This physiological piece is often overlooked or minimised in favour of cognitive reframing work. It shouldn’t be. The good news is, Jolene provides examples of simple and accessible resources that can easily be put into practice by you or your clients. Jolene is a leading authority on Grey-Area Drinking, a TED talk speaker, functional nutritionist and health coach who coaches private clients and also trains healthcare practitioners on the importance of nourishing neurotransmitters and supporting their client’s nervous system.

Are you sick of 'meetings' at the pub? Do you feel pressured to drink when networking or feel anxious before 'Happy Hour' and dread the inevitable hangover? Do you wish being part of your work's 'inner sanctum' didn't necessitate downing bucketloads of alcohol? Surely, there is another way for the workplace to be safer, more inclusive and healthier!

Today we are joined by the remarkable (and very funny!) Janet Hadley, Director of Choose Sunrise, and founder of the innovative Alcohol Safe Workplace accreditation program. Janet opens up about her personal struggles with alcohol and now aims to foster supportive and uplifting workplace environments where employees can truly succeed.

Alcohol policies in the workplace - why are they important? Why do we need to talk about them? This episode is dedicated to helping you understand the profound implications of these policies, and how they can contribute to psychological safety at work.

The creation of an inclusive workspace not only boosts employee engagement but also promotes a diverse workforce. However, changing the drinking culture is no easy task, especially when decision-makers themselves might be drinkers and cannot contemplate networking without it. Our younger employees are bucking this trend and do not want their workplace to be enmeshed with alcohol, hangovers and the way alcohol-laden socialising eats into their personal time. This is exactly why we must question it.

This episode is a must for those looking to comprehend the impacts of alcohol in the workplace, and create a healthier drinking culture. So, grab your headphones and join us!

Ladies, have you ever wondered why menopause isn't a subject of everyday conversation, despite its life-altering implications? This episode aims to shift the paradigm, bringing menopause out of the shadows with our special guest, Dr. Rebecca Lewis, a GP and menopause specialist. Together, we untangle the intricate web of hormonal changes that underpin menopause, bringing to light its potential health risks like cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and even dementia. We discuss in-depth how estrogen deficiency can lead to a host of symptoms including anxiety, mood swings, and irritability. And we look at the different symptoms and how women often use alcohol to numb them.

We don't stop there. As we delve into the impacts of menopause on physical and mental health, we also shed light on the potential benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Dr. Lewis provides valuable insights into the body-identical type of estrogen in HRT, a mirror copy of the estrogen produced in women's ovaries. Drink: The Intimate Relationship between Women and Alcohol celebrates 10 years today! Tune in as we talk to the author, Ann Dowsett Johnston, award-winning journalist, TEDx Speaker and Founder of the Writing Your Recovery Workshops about women’s relationship with alcohol 10 years on. Is alcohol still the modern women’s steroid that helps us do the heavy lifting?

It was a brave act to speak out in the way Ann did 10 years ago. At the time, Ann became the modern face of alcoholism. “What I wanted to do with my book was to blow the doors wide open and say if I can have an alcohol issue, as Vice Principal of a University, anyone can” says Ann. It’s true. Drink gave permission for women to say “this is happening to me and my family as well”. For that, so many of us will forever be grateful to Ann.

Drink was and is a revolutionary book ahead of its time, interweaving Ann’s personal alcohol story with crucial research and interviews about the startling rise of risky drinking among women. Drink was named one of the 10 best books of 2013 by the Washington Post.

Ann is now a psychotherapist helping other women to recover, a speaker and founder of the Writing Your Recovery Workshops, open to women internationally.

Tune in to this conversation to hear about what life is like 15 year’s sober and Ann’s views on women’s relationship with alcohol today.

In this episode, Meg & Bella address the pros and pitfalls of moderating alcohol. Everybody who drinks or has drunk has practiced it but not many succeed at it! We talk about alcohol moderation in the context of Dry July, this being the second day of it, when thousands of Australians dip their toe into the alcohol-free water and try their hand at giving up the booze for a full 31 days. Why this topic? Well, firstly, because most people who sign up for Dry July are having trouble moderating and curious about taking a break. Secondly, most who do Dry July plan to return to the booze but with great intentions to tighten up their moderation rules – at least at the start anyway! So why not use this month off alcohol to learn about your relationship with alcohol and make some changes that stick long term.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  Dry July is a fundraising campaign, raising funds for people affected by cancer. Alice drinking got out of control growing up in Tasmania, drinking to numb complicated feelings associated with being gay in an environment in which it was illegal to be so.  After bravely going to rehab more than 20 times desperate to find a way out of the damaging drinking cycle she was in, Alice was finally able to stop drinking after reading Annie Grace’s This Naked Mind, doing several of Annie’s alcohol programs and pursing the transformational effects of cold-water exposure and Wim Hoff’s breathing techniques. It stuck. Alice then decided to support others struggling with alcohol and stress to benefit from this method too. She founded Wild Wellness in Tasmania which offers a range of transformational retreats designed to help people escape, heal and reset in the magnificent wilderness of Tasmania via ocean plunges, practitioner-led fireside sessions, journaling and guided breathwork. Growing up in South Africa, Rina began using alcohol as a preteen to overcome her social fears. Throughout her teenage years and into her early twenties, she regularly consumed alcohol until she moved to Australia and reduced her drinking.
However, after the birth of her son, she felt overwhelmed by motherhood and turned to a daily happy hour with a glass of wine, believing it helped her cope. While this habit continued after the birth of her daughter, Rina eventually lost interest in drinking and tried various methods to control her alcohol consumption.
Ultimately, it was The Alcohol Experiment that allowed her to break free. Rina shares how her newfound freedom from alcohol has brought gratitude, how to navigate a social life without alcohol, and how her relationships have become even more valuable without alcohol.

Today we are joined by Michelle McDonald, sobriety coach and burgeoning podcaster, about her transformation from a daily drinker to an alcohol-free woman. Michelle describes how she never really felt like she “was enough”. She consequently filled her life with a busy schedule of things to do, was loud, sociable and drank a lot to “complete” herself. She believes all this noise and “doing” including hitting the gym early and hard, was a trade-off to justify the drinking. Michelle’s drinking escalated to the point that she sometimes started the day with a drink of vodka on a bad day. However she turned it around. Michelle found sobriety after completing a 90-day alcohol challenge and within a fortnight of doing so, she noticed life opportunities started opening up for her. She likens it to a domino effect whereby her life organically and naturally began falling into place. From there Michelle has gone from strength to strength. Gone is the noise that so often accompanies drinking. She now relishes sitting peacefully and calmly and describes her life now as full of clarity and purpose. She even feels younger (love this!). Look no further if you are after sober inspiration. So many women will relate to this story!

Today we are joined by Pia Clinton-Tarestad, Co-founder & Chief Executive of The Clean Slate Clinic. In fact, Pia was The Clinic’s very first client! Pia tried and tested The Clinic’s program from her caravan as she travelled around Australia. She started the program in New South Wales, detoxed in South Australia, continued it through Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland, completing it near Sydney. It was absolutely life changing for her. She believes that had she not done the program she might not have been able to transform her relationship with alcohol as she has done now as the barriers to her seeking help were so significant. Since then, Pia has been a “women on a mission to make it available to anyone who needs it”. The Clinic is an innovative and ground-breaking service that provides a Telehealth program supporting Australians struggling with alcohol (and also stimulants and cannabis) dependence to safely detox from home. Pia brings a wealth of knowledge to this role, including a lived experience with an alcohol use disorder and with that immense passion and determination to make this service as accessible as possible.

In this episode, we talk about the term “alcoholic”.  The phrase “am I an alcoholic?” is frequently googled and many use this as the starting point for exploring whether alcohol has become a problem for them. We explore the derivation of this term, why some people with alcohol use disorders do not relate to or identify with this term and what are some alternatives to this label.  Two important points to note in relation to this episode: firstly, if you are moderate to heavy consistent drinker and you feel you may be physically addicted then it is important that you seek medical advice to detox safely.  Secondly, we respect everybody’s right to use the label that feels right for them and if you have opted to use the term “alcoholic” to describe your own relationship with alcohol then we 100% support this too.

In today’s episode we talk to Anna Cusack. Anna is a Postpartum Doula, Parent Supporter, Certified Motherhood Studies Practitioner, Author, Podcaster and a mum who supports and mentors women in pregnancy, post-birth and early parenthood. Anna has also been alcohol free for 4 years. We start by talking about Anna's decision to go alcohol free and then we have a lively chat about the pressures woman face during motherhood, how hard it can be when choosing between your career and motherhood, the allure and risks of mummy wine culture and how alcohol can become a crutch to get through the stresses of raising our little ones, often masking our need to connect and seek extra support. Be sure to catch this episode. There will be so much you can relate to. Apart from thinking “oh I wish I knew Anna when I was having my babies…” (like we did!), you might also look back on your parenting struggles with a little more self-compassion (like we did!) or if you are in the midst of it right now you might feel a little more understood (also us!) and keep Anna’s number handy nearby just in case you or a friend need it.

Shaun Palmer defeated alcohol when the odds were stacked against him. Alcohol provided the anaesthetic he was looking for at a young age to numb and escape from the trauma of growing up with domestic violence and a father with a sever alcoholic use disorder in the family home. He quickly moved out and immersed himself in his new career in the hospitality industry and then later in the fly-in-fly-out mining industry where he found drinking was entrenched and revered. Following a family tragedy, Shaun miraculously turned his life around. His sheer focus and dedication to becoming sober is compelling. Shaun’s story may have started with heartbreak, but it now certainly speaks of revival and joy of the life he has created. He provides direct insight into a male’s experience of transforming from a big drinker into an alcohol-free man in Australian culture. It certainly wasn’t all plain sailing and he intentionally altered where and how he socialised in order to succeed on his sober mission but any losses have clearly been overshadowed by all the gains. Please tune in for this wonderful and informative episode.

Today Meg & Bella are incredibly lucky to be joined by Dr Chris Davis, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of The Clean Slate Clinic to discuss The Clinic’s innovative and highly acclaimed Telehealth program that supports Australians struggling with alcohol dependence to safely undergo alcohol detox from home. We take a deep dive into how the program operates, how it takes the pressure off emergency wards, assists people that reside remotely and removes barriers to those that are just too scared or unable for other reasons to seek “traditional help”.  We also have a lively chat about Australia’s drinking culture, the stigma attached with the term “Alcoholic”, alcohol advertising, moderation and more. Join us! For further information we encourage you to look at The Clean Slate Clinic’s site: https://www.cleanslateclinic.com.

Join us as we talk with the glorious perfectly imperfect Lisa Greenberg about her alcohol addiction and her path to sobriety and beyond. As a highly sought-after speaker, fitness consultant, columnist and founder of SOBEROBICS, Lisa’s passion for inspiring, elevating and empowering women truly resonates. Her energy and enthusiasm for life is contagious. In this episode, Lisa is refreshingly honest and open about how dark her battle with alcohol got for her. We discuss the secrecy and dishonesty that often accompanies addiction including hiding bottles and lying to family and friends about the extent of her drinking; how Lisa believed that alcohol allowed her to be the party girl and that without it she “would have nothing else to add” and that “no one would want to talk to her” and how at rock bottom her self-loathing loomed so large that she chose to sleep on the concrete floor as she believed she no longer deserved her bed. In recovery, Lisa learned to like the girl staring back at her in the mirror and embrace the fact that she no longer needs or wants to be the party girl. Her experience has propelled her into a life full of gratitude and service to others. This episode is essential listening for those of us who are seeking reminders as to why we are living or yearn to live an alcohol-free life and who are looking for some hope and inspiration to reach outwards, onwards and upwards. Lisa can be found on Instagram: @lisagperfectlyimperfect and on her YouTube channel, 100 Days to Happy Healthy and Hot: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTqHravvFlqjn3sJhMyj9ng. In today's episode, we talk to sleep psychologist Professor Michael Gradisar from Wink Sleep all about alcohol & sleep. Not only do people fear not being able to fall asleep when taking a break from alcohol but this fear can often be a reason for not staying the course. So we thought let’s get an expert on to answer our questions and learn some tips! We discuss how the first week of removing alcohol can resemble insomnia and how it can take a week or two to transition into a restorative sleep pattern. Michael explains how being forearmed with this knowledge minimises your fear of falling asleep by empowering you to know this is normal and that steps are available to make it easier, including cognitive behaviour therapy techniques, improvements to your sleep environment and bringing in your screen to help you doze off to a calming show (yes you heard that right!). We also discuss how drinking dreams actually help us remain alcohol free. We hope you enjoy this as much as we did! Look out for Wink Sleep’s eBook, How to Ride the Wave: Sleep and Alcohol, How to Make it Easier when Making a Change which can be found at https://winksleep.online/ as well as links to daily videos discussing what you can expect in the early days of going alcohol free together with some tips to ride the wave.

Hot off the press! Meg & Bella examine whether drinking actually relieves stress and boredom? Of course it doesn't! It exacerbates both.  We shine a light on how drinking makes you more stressed and anxious over time. We also look at how drinking shrinks your world and makes you more boring and bored.  Yet so many of us look to alcohol to escape these uncomfortable feelings. Reframing these beliefs is part of the work to finding freedom from alcohol (and striving towards a life full of healthier coping methods, passion, purpose and playfulness)!

In this episode, Bella talks to Miranda, a close high-school friend, about Mim's  experience with burnout and her recovery from it.  Bella and Mim chat about the bizarre moment they each discovered that their lives had "imploded" at the very same moment. Mim discusses how her brain quite literally went into "safe mode" and she could no longer do basic things like send a text, how she recovered slowly but surely over 2-years and how one day she woke up and thought "I'm back!".  Finally Bella and Mim reflect on how these life-implosion-moments can lead to a more purposeful and resonant life on the others side.

In this episode, Meg and Bella discuss two very important lists that identify the beliefs that we all develop over the course of our lives around alcohol and which creates a road map for the reframing process that will lead you to a new mindset around alcohol.  Meg and Bella then share the original content of a visualisation exercise that they independently did at the start of their own alcohol free journeys.  It's vulnerable stuff today, yet empowering and hopeful.
