Compassion.

It truly is what the world needs now. But how do we cultivate compassion in a society that often seems so divided?

In this episode, we speak to the Venerable Thubten Chodron, abbess and founder of Sravasti Abbey, the sole Tibetan Buddhist training monastery. She is currently co-authoring with His Holiness the Dalai Lama a multi-volume series of teachings on the Buddhist path, The Library of Wisdom and Compassion, and shares these teachings on her travels worldwide.

We are blessed to be the beneficiaries of her wisdom on the practice of compassion.

So many of us dream of escaping to some remote, beautiful land where we can find some refuge from the chaos of modern life, either for a short time or on a more permanent basis.

We are drawn by the romance of the great outdoors, exploring where few of our own kind have set foot, and learning to live in tandem with the natural world, but are we brave enough to actually do it?

Join us tomorrow as we chat with Bill Cowie, caretaker of the remote isle of Rona in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. Twenty two years ago, he assumed the challenge of living and working on this distant outcrop of rock in the sea, and has loved almost every minute of it.

His interview can be found at 6:03. To dive a little deeper into the Isle of Rona itself, you can go to the website.

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode discusses sensitive topics that are not suitable for children and may be triggering to many adults. These topics include genocide, murder, suicide and rape. Listener discretion is strongly advised.

South Africa instituted proceedings against Israel on December 29th, 2023 alleging that Israel has committed, and is committing, genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza strip and that Israel is in contravention of the Genocide convention. Israel rejects these allegations, and has argued that the war in Gaza is being fought in self-defense against Hamas. Israel believes that this case, being heard in the International Court of Justice, is an attempt to "pervert the meaning" of the term genocide.

In this micro episode, we touch upon genocides that have occurred in recent memory, their origins, and the aftermath in the hope to provide some context for consideration of the term.

This is an excerpt of a larger episode published in July 2023 entitled Genocide: In Conversation with Dara Solomon of the Toronto Holocaust Museum in which we explore the definition of genocide, how genocide has been exacted upon people and the real and horrible legacy it leaves in its wake.

Genocide is a terrible truth. It is incumbent upon us all to educate ourselves on the shape it can take, even in its earliest stages so that we can learn to prevent it, or at the very least, stand in its path.

Article II of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide defines genocide as the following:

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;

(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its

physical destruction in whole or in part;

(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

We always need another hero, contrary to what the late and great Tina Turner may have sang.

Heroes inspire us all to be better, to act with courage and to raise up and rescue the vulnerable, even when the odds of success are unfathomable.

Our guest is a real world hero. Father Bruno, Episcopal priest, born into the impoverished conditions afforded to most in Port-au-Prince Haiti, had a dream - to illuminate the lives of children through the light of education. This he has achieved and more, impacting the lives of thousands of children and their families.

This episode was so uplifting to produce. The stories shared within reconfirm that there is so much good in this world. We need to celebrate our heroes, big and small. Only then can we find the hero that lies dormant within our own selves.

Trigger Warning: This episode discusses suicide, suicidal ideation, drug addiction, and depression.

Even the hardest, most cynical of skeptics would likely welcome a miracle in their own lives.

These life-changing events have been documented since the dawn of time, from spontaneous healing of terminal illnesses or dramatic disability to the tears of a plastic Elvis in the Netherlands.

Miracles are difficult to comprehend, but easy to embrace, as they provide us with hope in our darkest days.

Kevin Hines, a survivor and beneficiary of a miracle, speaks with us about the incredible and tragic day he decided to end his life, and the miraculous events that have followed.

Trigger Warning: The content of this production may be triggering, as it mentions verbal, physical and emotional abuse, cults, high control organizations and coercive behaviour. If you or your loved one is experiencing challenge, suffering or diffficulty in connection to a high control organization, please seek help, support and guidance.

Just recently, the Emmy-nominated filmmakers behind Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult released a new three-part documentary series that seeks to expose The Twin Flames Universe, or TFU as a high control organization. Harris and Walker probe the paranormal even further with paranormal investigator, James Gilberd of New Zealand Strange Occurrences Society, a paranormal investigation, and research group based in Wellington, New Zealand, who recounts his own encounters with the unexplainable.

Trigger alert: The following content includes discussion of murder, abduction, assault, suicide and intimidation. If you are the victim of violence or harrassment, please reach out for counselling and support.

The free press is under attack, and it is not just the usual suspects behind the assault. The powerful and corrupt have always sought control over the message. They seek to repress, undermine, or obscure the truth in order to solidify their postition of power.

Journalists are subjected to relentless harrassment, on and offline, intimidation, abduction, torture and even murder, most often in retaliation for reporting on anti-corruption, cartel and gang activities, and even environmental transgressions. Tellingly, there has been a sharp increase in the number of journalists killed worldwide over the past several years. The press is being silenced.

Katharine Gregorio, author of “The Double Life of Katharine Clark: The Untold Story of the Fearless Journalist who Risked Her Life for Truth and Justice”, shares her thoughts on the challenges to journalistic freedom, then and now, as learned in the chronicling of the life of her own exceptional ancestor.

Dr. Jay Hegdé, assistant professor and scientist in the department of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine at Augusta University teaches how one may learn how to break camouflage and why it is a relevant and important skill today.

The rarefied realm of royalty. We are fascinated by these ancient institutions, and the people who populate them, even from afar.

Is it our childhood fantasies of castles and knights on horseback that fuel this preoccupation with the lives of these privileged few? Or is it the gasping chasm that we are trying to bridge between the haves and the have nots?

We also have quite a treat for you! Richard Fitzwilliams, longtime commentator on the British Royal Family, shares with us his observations on the current state of sovereign affairs as the Windsors navigate forward toward the future.

Meet Albert Austin, a self-made man, and his wife, Mary, a charitable socialite with feminist leanings. Their lives unfolded in the early 20th century on a beautiful estate just north of the young city of Toronto, steeped in privilege and wealth. Their happy family life was shattered by the Great War leaving two of their children shell-shocked and another a victim of the tuberculosis epidemic .

Join Harris and Walker as they take the scenic route and tour the exceptional Spadina Musuem, a mansion built by the Austin family and enjoyed for several decades beyond. Learn of the lives lived within these storied walls, both upstairs and downstairs during the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression, as they played out in the shadow of their famous neighbour, Sir Henry Pellatt of Casa Loma.

According to the United Nations, there are approximately 476 million indigenous people around the world representing 5,000 communities in 90 countries and speak 4,000 languages.

A common but dark thread links these peoples. The indigenous people are the stewards of the land, the sea and all who dwell within and upon it. Their teachings, carried carefully from generation to generation, have demonstrated miraculous resilience to the oppressive, violent subjugation and betrayal by settlers.

It would be to the benefit of all if their vast knowledge, embedded in song, stories and the strident voices of the youth, would be heeded today.

Joe Urie, Métis guide and co-owner of Jasper Tour Company shares A Beautiful Idea, a co-existence born from respect, rights and truth for the indigenous peoples of Canada and the world beyond.

In the words of Art Solomon, an Anishinaabe elder, "The imperative for us now, as Native people, is to heal our communities, and heal our nations, because we are the final teachers in this sacred land."

Trigger alert: The following content includes discussion of addiction, substance abuse, eating disorders and other behavioural disorders. If you or someone close to you is struggling with addiction, please find support. We will include some helpful resources in our notes.

Addiction is a scourge on our society, an epidemic in its own right.

Addiction can manifest in different ways, whether it is an unhealthy relationship with substances or a harmful dependence on a set of behaviours. No matter how addiction presents, the underlying triggers and causes can be remarkably similar.

In this episode, Jess Phillips, personal coach and brilliant host of the podcast Living Out Loud explores this topic with us more deeply, sharing her own story of addiction and her path to recovery.

It is time we move far beyond shame and judgement towards healing, recovery and support for those afflicted. We hope you will listen in to this very important and relevant conversation.

Camp 30 was a prisoner of war camp for high-ranking German military officers in World War II. This camp was not located behind Allied lines in Europe, but rather thousands of miles away nestled among the bucolic fields and flowers in Bowmanville, Ontario.

Join Harris and Walker as they take the scenic route and walk the grounds of this historic site that set the scene for riots and escapes worthy of any James Bond film.

The detour? Camp X. A secret school of espionage on Canadian soil, visited by none other than Ian Fleming himself. Who’s he? The author and creator of James Bond.

Genocide does not occur in a vacuum. There are signs, signals, no matter how small, that portend the evil that is just beyond the horizon.

The wedding is steeped in tradition, legend and lore. It is not just an occasion to celebrate a lifetime commitment, it is a performance of age-old rituals, sometimes with a modern twist.

Jacqueline Au, founder and owner of The LOFT Bridal Boutique in Hong Kong, shares with us how she has levelled up the bridal industry by providing a unique, bespoke, and carefully curated experience to the bride-to-be, fulfilling their dreams.

Conventional. Innovative. Outrageous. Fantastic. Whatever the shape a wedding takes, these ceremonies are singularly human, and thus are to be cherished.

There is a movement to repurpose, re-use, and transform the old and once forgotten. What we discard can be reimagined into new and beautiful forms.

There is a fondness, a nostalgia for eras gone by and seems to resurface from generation to generation. This sentimentality appears to be a uniquely human.  Perhaps it reminds us of our own impermanence or comforts us as we age.

Join us as we chat about the love of period costume, upcycling fashion and breathing fresh life into old technology through art.

Let's revamp our old way of thinking, and discover a new mantra: In with the old, and out with the new.

The words ghost town commonly conjure images of empty narrow streets of wooden buildings with dusty verandahs support blackened, gaping windows, and if you wander far enough, you might come across a rickety old saloon or perhaps a general store.

Abandoned villages are not just forgotten remnants of a time gone by.  People flee their homes, sometimes overnight or over decades, when it no longer makes sense to stay.

Ghost towns are often left behind to the passage of time but sometimes they can be revived and reconstructed, home again to new life. Explore the potential renaissance of an abandoned village in Portugal with our guest, Fiona Thornton, International Manager of the luxury brokerage Luximos.

So let’s cast off our assumptions, and excavate the derelict, the deserted and the desolate ghost town.

Content Warning: This episode discusses loneliness, sadness, depression, anxiety and suicide. This may be triggering to some listeners.

Loneliness is an epidemic in today’s society. Though it’s prevalence may have been exacerbated as a result of the imposed isolation of the recent pandemic, loneliness is a real and devastating issue for so many.

Loneliness is lack of integration, a sense of disconnection from the social fabric. It is a feeling of isolation from others, whether one is surrounded by a supportive network or truly alone.

Listen in to our conversation with our guest Dragana Curovic who reveals an innovative housing development in Helsingborg, Sweden that was developed to combat loneliness.

Leprauchauns, fairies, black cats and Big Foot.

The magical and mystical, the mysterious and the mythical; these beliefs have allowed our species to make sense of this sometimes confusing and difficult world. Over time, in every land and every culture, humans have looked to the unknown and supernatural to explain what we do not understand.

Superstition itself is born out of legend and folklore. These rituals give us a sense of control over the unknown, assuring us a positive outcome, and are very common today..

In this episode, Jennifer Stott of Black Cat Rescue in Boston Massachusetts lets the cat out of the bag on the origins of black cat superstition the impact on these clever and loving creatures.

So cross your fingers and knock on wood as we leap into the fantasy world of legend and lore.

Dirty, dangerous and sometimes morally troubling jobs are held by innumerable people around the world, but as the saying goes, someone has to do it.

Society often stigmatizes these jobs, and though they are often necessary to the safety, security and health of society, the individuals performing this work are frequently marginalized, impoverished and forced to bear real physical and psychological risks.

We dig into the murky social and moral context of dirty work with award-winning author, Eyal Press, who, through the examination of correctional officers and inmates in America’s penal system, military drone operators and more, explores the inequity of power in society that gives context to some of the more dangerous, violent and often ethically troubling jobs.

So join us as we roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty as we dig in to the complex issue of dirty jobs.

Death, dying and the rituals that surround these inevitabilities of human existence reflect incredibly diverse cultural beliefs.

In the words of Woody Allen, "I am not afraid of death. I just don't want to be there when it happens." Death is often a taboo subject, a topic to be avoided, but it can also be embraced as an inescapable aspect of living.

We are grateful for the opportunity to speak with Jill Bodak, author of Loved into Being: Reflections on Stroke and Being Indestructible, a memoir of sudden tragedy, caregiving and the journey to the end.

Please join us as we muse on our mortality and explore the depths of death and dying.

Mind your manners. Be on your best behaviour.

Your mom had it right.

Etiquette is a code of conduct, a set of customs and courtesies that vary from culture to culture. Sometimes the rules for behaviour are embedded in centuries of tradition, and some we are still trying to sort out as a society. If we don't follow these rules, especially while travelling, we can get ourselves into hot water.

In this episode, we delve deeper into the historical roots of etiquette and its role in modern day society with leading etiquette expert and CEO of Polo and Tweed, Lucy Challenger.

So let’s sharpen our social graces and pursue our passion for protocol as we explore the mannerly matter of etiquette.

Domestic service is integral to human history.  Whenever there has been a divide between have and have not, between wealthy and poor, there have been workers to bring comfort and cleanliness to the lives of their overseers.

In recent times, the relationship between master or mistress and servant has been glamourized through popular media. The magical mystique that was once only reserved for the elite is now extended to those who serve them. But is it really a fairytale of domesticated bliss between servant and master, a love story of loyalty and extended familial bonds?

We dive deep into the world of domestic service with renowned industry leader and former butler, Charles Macpherson, television and radio personality, author of four books including The Butler Speaks and the Pocket Butler as well as the founder of the Charles Macpherson Academy.

Join us today as we go behind the scenes of the rarified world of the priveleged and examine the lives of the hired help.

We all sometimes seek to escape the drama or even the tedium of our day to day reality in a myriad of ways, some healthy and some most definitely not.

In moderation, our escapist tendencies can be viewed as harmless attempts at coping with stress, but if we step out of reality to avoid conflict or confrontation in our lives, we can compound problems and complicate our stress even further.

So how best to temporarily dodge difficulties without causing harm to ourselves or our loved ones?

Explore this issue with holistic space-maker, designer Joanie Atkinson of Spirit House Interiors, as we chat about how we can create a refuge of respite where we can find well-being, and bring our lives into better alignment.

Escape with us, break free of the overwhelm and let's liberate ourselves with a newfound understanding of our impulse to escape.

‘Tis the season to be cozy!

As the snow begins to fly, and the first of the winter storms begin to track their way across the northern climes, we all seek refuge in our homes for warmth and comfort. But what is this feeling that we call cozy? How is it defined around the world? Perhaps cozy is not just about well-placed woolen throws, scented candles and reading socks.

Join us as we chase the concept of cozy in conversation all the way to the home of hygge, Copenhagen Denmark, where we will chat with our guest Skyler Rowland, proprietor of the much loved Next Door Café.

Let’s wrap yourself up in a wool blanket, grasp that hot cup of cocoa and get toasty as we explore the contented and the comfortable world of cozy.
