We are meant to stand out. Our value lies in who we are and what makes us unique. We're changing what it means to succeed in this industry. We don’t succeed in spite of our Imposter Syndrome. We succeed because of it.

You've been telling yourself it's too soon.

Or too late.

Junior enough that BD can wait. Senior enough that you've already missed the boat.

Neither is true.

Ask most lawyers when the right time to start BD is, and you'll get one of three answers. Not yet — I'm too junior, nobody wants to hear from me. Not yet — I need partner first, then I'll have the credibility. Too late — I should have started years ago, so what's the point now.

I hear all three. None of them hold up.

BD is relationship building and those relationships take time to build — which is exactly why the moment to start is always now. If you're junior, you've already got a ready-built network sitting in your contacts list. Don't let it go cold. If you're senior, your credibility is already established, and your network is bigger and warmer than you think. A cold DM from a senior associate lands very differently to one from a trainee.

If you're thinking you'd rather focus on the legal work because the relationship building feels hard, don't worry. Business development is a skill, not a personality trait. You learn it the same way you learned everything else - by getting started, having a strategy and course-correcting as you go.

As skills go, the sooner you develop this one the better. The lawyers who get promoted are the ones who can show they've contributed to the business of the firm, not just the practice of the law.

In this week's episode of Legal Imposters, I break down why BD matters at every stage, the three misconceptions keeping good lawyers on the sidelines, how much time it actually needs, and why a strategy beats throwing spaghetti at the wall.

P.S. Inside Be The First Group Coaching, I give you the tools to turn all this into results — a full BD strategy, the BD Tracker to keep you consistent, and coaching to help you convert your pipeline into real, paying clients. Enrolment for the September 2026 class opens 17 August. Save the date in your calendar and keep listening for details.

There's the work you do. Then there's the number attached to it.

Alot of senior Black lawyers can tell you, in detail, how good their work is. Ask them their utilisation rate, their WIP, their BD conversion rate — and the fluency disappears.

It shows up in small ways first. You're behind on your time recording. You assume the hours you're putting in are "enough." You're constantly being chased for your numbers instead of leading with them. You believe the promotion is owed to you because of how hard you've worked.

It's not that the hard work doesn't matter. It's that hard work was never the whole conversation.

Here's the truth nobody tells you early enough: every decision your firm makes about you is a numbers decision. Yes, as a junior, you were judged on the quality of your work. But the more senior you get, the more that shifts — until the quality of your numbers, as far as the partnership is concerned, is the quality of your work

If "I'm not a numbers person" just came to mind, that's expected. It's also not true. It's just a thought. So choose a new one and adopt it as your identity: I am good with numbers.

In this episode, I walk through exactly which numbers to know — billable hours, utilisation rate, invoicing, billing, WIP and receivables, business generated and referrals, your BD conversion rate — and the tracking system that makes staying fluent in them automatic, not another thing to remember.

Know your numbers, and you become more valuable. More valuable makes you more promotable.

You've done the panels. The podcast guest spots. The thought leadership posts that get hundreds of likes. The coffee catch-ups with every contact who'll give you fifteen minutes. By every measure that matters in a networking sense, you are doing it right.

So why hasn't a single one of those relationships turned into a matter, a referral, or a line of billable revenue?

That's the question at the centre of this episode, and it's costing more mid-to-senior lawyers their business case for partnership than almost anything else.

Here's the mistake I see most often: either no business development at all, or so much of it there's no time left to close anything. Both versions look like work. Neither builds a business case.

That's because Business Development and Business Generation are not the same thing, and treating them as interchangeable is exactly what's keeping the revenue numbers flat.

Business Development is the planting and the nurturing — networking, thought leadership, speaking, content creation. It's connection and relationship: building trust, showing up consistently, becoming known. Business Generation is the harvest — originating matters, closing deals, referrals, the moment a relationship turns into billable revenue.

One is activity. The other is results. One is comfortable, because it's relationship-stage. The other is uncomfortable, because it's conversion-stage — the moment the fear shows up: fear of being salesy, fear of being seen as pushy, fear of ruining a relationship you've spent months building, fear of what it means if they say no.

None of that fear means you're bad at this. It means no one ever taught you the difference between the two skills, or gave you a way to move between them without it costing you the relationship.

In this episode, I walk through exactly that: the real distinction between BD and BG, and the blueprint for building a business generation pipeline that doesn't rely on luck or charm.

There is a word that high-performing Black lawyers consistently struggle to say. A word that, when they learn to use it, transforms their careers, their health, and the way people treat them at work.

That word is no.

I know. You already know this. You've heard it before. So here's the real question: why aren't you saying it?

Because the cost of not saying it is higher than you think. Not just the missed sleep and the mounting overwhelm. Not just the deadlines that slip and the inbox that never empties. The real cost is this: you will not get promoted until you learn how to set boundaries.

In Episode 136 of the Legal Imposters Podcast, I'm talking about boundaries — what they actually are, why you're not setting them, and exactly how to start.

Here's what we cover:

  • What setting a boundary actually means (hint: it's simpler than you think, and it starts with a decision)

  • The signs that you've already crossed the line — from the overwhelm and the panic to the missed opportunities and the things still waiting for you

  • The real reasons you keep saying yes — and why "I'm expected to" and "I don't want to let people down" are keeping you stuck

  • A four-part framework for how to set boundaries that actually hold

  • How to position your no — the non-negotiable no, the conditional no, the strategic no, and yes, the strategic yes

  • How to handle the discomfort that comes with doing this for the first time

This episode is for you if your inbox is a mess, you're being chased for tasks, you've never once said no to a file coming in, and somewhere in the back of your mind you know that something has to change.

Setting a boundary isn't about letting people down. It's about deciding you're no longer willing to let yourself down.

Happy listening

When you've been trying to build your book of business, or get better work allocation, or achieve any other result in your career and there's no proof it's working, what do you do? Do you persevere? Do you invest more time and effort? Or do you assume failure, give up or change tack?

This week on Legal Imposters we're talking about Assuming Failure - how easily we do it when we don't get immediate results and how negatively it affects your likelihood of success when you jump to it too soon.

Without the evidence that what we're doing is working, it's natural to assume failure. But abandoning a strategy before you've given it long enough to work doesn't get you to your goal faster. It risks pushing you further away.

If you want to avoid this happening to you, tune in to the latest episode: Assuming Failure.

Here's what we cover:

(1) why it's so easy to assume failure

(2) the limitations of assuming failure and why you want to resist it

(3) what to do when met with none or only partial results, to give your strategy the best chance of success

Happy listening

Everyone procrastinates a little. But when it's a common feature of how you work, it's time to do something about it.

Tasks on your to do list growing mouldy and old. Missed deadlines. Being repeatedly chased for tasks you said you would do. Neglected to-dos preying on your mind in the early hours of the morning. The feeling of dread every time you think about a project. Under-recording hours after a task took you way too long to complete.

If any of these behaviours resonate, you're in the right place.

In this week's episode of Legal Imposters we're shining the spotlight on Procrastination - a secret sign of Imposter Syndrome that, done repeatedly, will negatively impact your brand, your output, your performance generally and therefore ultimately your career. So this is something you want to address right now.

Here's what you'll learn:

  1. What procrastination is and how it's showing up in your day to day
  2. The damage procrastination is doing to your career and why stopping it matters
  3. The 2 main causes of procrastination and how to tell which one applies to you
  4. Why tackling procrastination needs to happen at an identity level, so you can nip it in the bud for good.

If you're applying for a role or preparing for an upcoming interview you're going to want to listen to this episode. if you're not, save this episode so you can find it when the time comes, because this one is a game changer

Today we're talking about how to prepare for interviews. Not what to say in an interview. But how you say it.

Because communicating your skills, experience and fit for a role isn't just about the words you choose. It's about the energy you transmit when you delivery those words.

You can be the best fit on paper, but if this is communicated with uncertainty and doubt you could lose out to someone far less qualified but way more sure.

I want to make sure this doesn't happen to you.

What you won't get in this episode is strategy - what to say or how to answer specific questions at interview.

But here's what you will get: the piece you've been overlooking in your preparation and delivery that will raise your interview performance to another level: Mindset

Here's what we cover:

  1. What mindset is and why it's so important to get right
  2. The exact mindset I recommend for both preparation stage and interview stage
  3. How to adopt the mindset you need, even when it doesn't feel true

You'll come away feeling more confident about yourself as a candidate and better equipped to perform in every interview and massively improve your chances of success as a result

Happy listening

What is Be The First Membership?

Who's it for? How do you join? What do you get? How is it different? These are all the questions you're asking about Be The First and I'll be answering all of them, in a live interview conducted by my magnificent eldest son Dylan!

When you agree to be interviewed by your own son live on social media, anything could happen.

But this work is too important to hide behind curated images and carefully scripted copy. The most authentic way for me to present it to you is direct from the source i.e. in conversation with me the founder. How wrong could it go?

Dylan is the eldest of 4 boys and a daily inspiration to me. He will be kind, but he won't let me off the hook, so pull up a seat and enjoy a lively and engaging conversation.

Do you have Imposter Syndrome?

Before you jump straight to a "yes" or "no", listen to episode 130 of Legal Imposters.

There are 10 stages of Imposter Syndrome and whether your goal is progression or simply excelling at what you do, it's important to know the stage you're at and how to move closer to the solution.

If you've never heard of Imposter Syndrome or have no idea what it is (Stage 1: Ignorance), figuring out your next step (finding out what it is) and taking that step today is pretty straight forward.

But if you're at Rejection (stage 3) or Resignation (stage 6) for example, knowing the next step and the fastest way to get there may not be so clear.

Episode 130 is goingit change that.

As with all personal and professional development, awareness is the first and often the most powerful step. Seeing that you've been stuck in Resistance (stage 5) for years, for example, can be illuminating. When you know and understand, you feel motivated to do something about it. This is great news for your confidence and fantastic news for your career. You're one step closer to getting unstuck.

And awareness isn't the only benefit to knowing the 10 stages and understanding where you are right now. One other benefit is perspective - you're going to stop seeing youir Imposter Syndrome in isolation, and start seeing it in the broader context of the Imposter Syndrome experience as a whole, and how your relationship with it can (and will) shift over time.

Which brings me to the biggest benefit of all -hope. If you think Imposter Syndrome is all about negativity and suffering, the 10 stages of Imposter Syndrome shows you otherwise. You'll discover that it's possible not just to overcome Imposter Syndrome, but to be Empowered (stage 9) by it and even Enlightened (stage 10) by it - something you never could have imagined. Whichever stage you're at, you're about to discover that you your experience of Imposter Syndrome can be a positive and uplifting one when you have the right tool.

I know this because I've done it.

And if I can do it, so can you.

Happy listening.

P.S. Inside Be The First Membership you will learn to overcome Imposter Syndrome so you have the confidence to show up to your potential. This doesn't just change how you work. It changes how you feel at work. Never again the only. Always the first. Doors to the Membership open May 1st at 12pm (UK) for 10 days only. Be ready. Keep listening for details.

Who do you think you are? And who gets to decide?

This week on the podcast we're talking about identity- the thoughts you think about yourself and the power they have over your experience of being the only one.

Based on what I see inside Be The First, too many of you are walking around with identities that don't serve you. Perhaps those identities are inherited. Sometimes they are adopted. Other times they are imposed or have simply accumulated.

But the one I see most often is the identity of being the Only One.

How you think about yourself in the room isn't just important. It's your whole experience. Not just how you feel. But how you behave. How you perform. And your readiness to step up to the next level. It's the difference between doing just enough to survive in this industry and being the black lawyer who thrives in this industry. Not just inside the office. But in your relationships and personal life too.

Something this important can't be left to chance. And it doesn't have to be. You can choose your identity and I recommend you start making that choice now.

if you're a black lawyer, whatever your career stage, this is exactly the work we do inside the Be The First Membership. In it you will get immediate access to the Identity Course where you explore 5 core aspects of your identity and shape these into an empowering speech - The Imposter Speech - to override self doubt in the moment and give you the confidence to show up at your highest level.

Doors open 1st May. Save the date and be the first to know by joining the waitlist here.

I'm hearing too many stories of you not getting the feedback you need to motivate you, confirm you're meeting expectations and support your progression to the next level.

Working for partners or line managers who communicate badly (or not at all) or who constantly postpone or cut short your review isn't just frustrating, it's unacceptable.

It's also career threatening.

Feedback that is consistently unforthcoming or unclear, or is too little and arrives too late, has far too often been the critical factor in your decision to head for or worse, be shown, the door.

But feeling powerless in the face of inadequate feedback should never be what derails your career.

You've worked too hard, for too long, and been through way too much for that.

That's why in this week's episode of the Legal Imposters podcast I help you change that.

In it I explain why you must stop leaving your feedback to chance (having a line manager who takes it seriously and does it well) and take ownership of that feedback yourself. I also give you a 3 step process for actioning this advice right now, the minute you finish listening to the podcast.

If your brain is rebelling against making feedback your job, it's not alone! This is hard coaching. One of my client's immediate reaction to this inside Be the First was "why should I be the one?!".

I get it.

But why should they be the ones to derail your career?

Taking ownership of your feedback isn't letting your boss off the hook. In fact, it isn't about them at all. It's about you: in the driving seat of your career so no one person's neglect can come between you the career you want to build and the life you want to live.

Happy listening.

P.S. Taking ownership of your feedback is harder when you depend on external validation to believe you're enough. If you're a black lawyer and this is you, I invite you to join the Be The First Membership, where you learn to overcome Imposter Syndrome and build confidence in who you are, so you can be brilliant at what you do. Doors open on 1st May. If this resonates, join the waiting list today and receive an invitation direct to your inbox when enrolment opens. Click here to join the waitlist.

It isn't enough to be valuable. You must be able to articulate that value and communicate it in a language the leadership understands.

Here's what I see:

  1. You present a history of the work you've done and deals you've closed ("Look at everything I've done for this firm") and tell yourself it should be enough. But entitlement doesn't get you promoted. Value does.
  2. You work diligently with your head down and hope someone will notice and give you the role. ("They can see I'm a safe pair of hands"). But hope doesn't get you the role. Value does.
  3. You work hard with your head high and make it someone else's job to connect the dots. ("I shouldn't have to spell it out!"). But expectation doesn't get you promoted. Value does.

Whether you're preparing your business case for promotion to partner, interviewing for a new role today or looking for a permanent role at the end of your training contract, the message is the same: don't leave it to others to work out the value of what you do. Show them.

If your next thought is "yes Caroline, but how?" you're in the right place.

This week on Legal Imposters I'm giving you a framework for articulating your value and communicating it with ease so you never leave your promotion or retention to chance again.

This is the exact same framework I teach my mid to senior and partner clients inside Be The First to build their business case for promotion and build their book of business. Apply this framework as directed and it will do the same for you.

Questions? Send me a DM on Social.

Happy listening.

P.S. If you're a black lawyer and this episode has you thinking "I don't have the confidence" to showcase my value like this, I invite you to join Be The First Membership, where we uncover all the ways Imposter Syndrome holds you back in your day to day, then we investigate it and make it your strength. Doors open on 1st May. If this resonates with where you are right now, join the waiting list today and receive an invitation direct to your inbox when enrolment opens. If you want the reward, you have to be willing to risk.

Right now, the fear of failure, of getting it wrong, of not knowing the answer, of letting people down - these are risks you're avoiding which are holding you back in your career.

They're why you're not applying for that new exciting role (which has your name written all over it and which you are already 80% qualified for).

They're why you're not contributing your ideas and perspective to meetings even though you have value to add.

Even though these are essential for your progression, the perceived risk of failure feels too high.

As a black lawyer being cautious and risk avoidant is to be expected.

The higher standards you're held to, the scrutiny you face and bias you encounter make it difficult to act before you're absolutely certain you'll succeed.

And therein lies the problem. There IS no certainty. No guarantee of success. No promise you'll avoid failure. So if you want to achieve the objectives of being great at what you do, being included, winning support, showcasing your value and ensuring you are retained or promoted, you must build your tolerance to risk and be willing to entertain more of it.

I show you how to do this in this week's episode.

In it I explain why waiting to be 100% ready is one of the secret signs of Imposter Syndrome that are holding you back in your career and how one of the ways to overcome this is to be willing to take the risk.

I reveal the limitations of avoiding risk altogether and the dangers of relying on others to create safety for you.

Then, I share a process for creating your own safety so you can increase your tolerance and take the risks that are necessary so you can bring in more rewards.

Happy listening.

P.S. Inside the Be The First Membership we investigate your Imposter Syndrome and make it your strength. I walk you step by step through the process for creating your Imposter Speech, so you always know what to tell yourself to overcome Imposter Syndrome in the moment so it never holds you back again. And you won't be doing this alone. You'll join a growing community of black lawyers on the same journey, learning, celebrating and supporting each other to thrive at every level. Doors to the membership open 1st May. Save this date. Keep listening for details.

What if, instead of giving yourself a week, 6 months, a year to complete that project or accomplish that goal, you could achieve it in half the time?

This week on Legal Imposters I'm introducing you to Massive Action - a tool I've been using in my business to generate the momentum, focus, energy and courage to bring my vision for the Be The First Membership to life. Not in a year, which is the timeframe my brain wants to set to avoid the fears that achieving this goal brings up. I'm using it to achieve this goal in half the time.

And it's effectiveness is blowing my mind.

Massive Action is the level of action you need to take to accomplish a goal or task in less time than you reasonably expect it to take. What makes this tool so valuable, is its ability to cut through the fears that are the real reasons behind your procrastination and why tasks take you so long to achieve.

Last October, when I asked myself how long I thought I needed to build and open the Be The First Membership, my brain offered me "at least a year!". Taking into account the scale of what I want to build, the meatiness of the sub-tasks involved, my already packed coaching and speaking schedule plus the many hats I wear as a business owner, this seemed entirely reasonable.

But I saw this timeframe for the procrastination it was: a secret sign of Imposter Syndrome that is holding me back from my potential to produce more in less time.

So I challenged myself to pick a shorter timeframe.l I identified the real reason behind my procrastination (the fear of failure, of being found out). Then I committed to feeling that fear NOW (instead of a year from now) and getting to work. As a result I'm on track to bring the Be The First Membership to life in half the time I anticipated.

The results I'm creating with Massive Action are blowing my mind.

Massive Action can do the same for you.

Tune in to discover how.

As long as you are setting goals, wanting to progress, seeking to grow -there will always be that moment when it feels so hard that every bone in your body is screaming at you to give up.

What you do in this moment is everything.

It's not the obstacle that defines your success or failure in achieving the goal. It's your ability to rise to the challenge it presents so that, instead of marking the end of the road, it signals your moment of triumph.

This is the pivotal moment, the part of the journey you remember as the moment you dug deep and found the strength and resilience to keep going, It's the How of How did I get here? that is so integral to your new identity as the person who achieved your goal.

This week on Legal Imposters we're talking about what this resilience looks like and how to find it when that time comes. It's not strategy. It isn't even a skill or tool. It's pure mindset. And it's the most important quality of all.

Happy listening.

P.S. One of the qualities you'll develop as a member of Be The First is knowing how to keep going when everything inside you wants to give up. How is your relationship with Imposter Syndrome?

The deeper this relationship, the more you will value yourself, the better you will show up to your work and the more others will value you.

My relationship with Imposter Syndrome used to be terrible.

I carried Imposter Syndrome around like a secret shame, determined to hide it, desperate to get rid of it. Certain that as long as I had it, I would never achieve my potential.

I tried every trick in the book to break free from it. Still, nothing worked. Not in a sustainable way. Not in a way that changed the way I felt when I had to speak up in meetings or when I sat down to tackle a hard task.

Then one day instead of fighting it, I stopped and decided to investigate it. That's when I saw the value in it. That's how I discovered it was my strength.

Now my relationship with Imposter Syndrome couldn't be more different.

I'm proud to call myself an Imposter. It emboldens me and empowers me. It supports me and holds me. It elevates and distinguishes me. I succeed because of it, not in spite of it.

Imposter Syndrome is no longer something I have. It's fundamental to who I am.

How is your relationship with Imposter Syndrome?

How would you be different?

In todays episode of Legal Imposters we're talking about your Infinite Capability. That is, you being capable of anything you set your mind to.

"I am capable of anything I set my mind to" is a belief I hold deep in my core about who I am and what is possible for me. This belief not only helps me overcome challenges, it has me setting bold ambitious goals and blowing my own mind about what is possible for me.

It can do the same for you.

It hasn't always been this way. I used to have a capability ceiling - a belief (I was certain!) that somewhere just above my head was a limit to what I could do and I needed to be very careful not to hit it.

The effects of this self-limiting thinking were exhausting: a constant fear of being found out (a classic sign of imposter syndrome) and going to extreme lengths - excessively checking my work, spinning in indecision, avoiding opportunities unless I was 100% ready (all secret signs of Imposter Syndrome) to ensure I never was.

But the minute I was willing to investigate this ceiling, everything changed. I realised that I had been capable all along. Not just a little bit capable. Capable of anything I have set my mind to. That's when everything changed.

Not only did I discover more and more evidence that this was true. I started showing up to my goals, my failures and my work as if it were true. The result - the evidence of its truth gets stronger and stronger. My belief grows deeper and deeper.

The same will happen for you.

In this episode:

  1. Why believing you are infinitely capable is so important (and what happens when you don't)
  2. What the Capability Ceiling is and how it's keeping you stuck
  3. What it takes to develop this level of belief in yourself
  4. The resistance to expect (from your own brain!) when you go to do this work, and how to get past it
  5. The best place to do this transformative work and my recommended place to start

P.S. On 1st May I'm opening the doors to the new Be The First Membership, where lawyers of colour come together to overcome Imposter Syndrome, claim their space and lead with authenticity. If you're a black lawyer, aspiring or practising, join us. Save the date, stay tuned to the podcast and follow me on social media so you don't miss the details.

The next time you have an experience that leaves you feeling disempowered or victimised, look for version 2.

In episode 120 of Legal Imposters I explain why and I show you how.

There's always a version of your experience that leaves you feeling powerless and frustrated (version 1).

And for every version 1, there's always a version 2 - one that will take you out of victimhood and leave you feeling empowered and motivated to keep progressing to your goal.

I've coached on this ALOT inside Be The First this week. One client experience left them feeling traumatised and undervalued; another client was left feeling invisible and disrespected.

In both cases I challenged their stories of what happened and helped them to see how the version of events that left them hurt and disillusioned (version 1) was just that: one version, one interpretation. I showed them that there was a second, equally valid version (version 2) of that same event that would leave them feeling motivated and empowered. And then I invited them to choose -

How do you want to feel?

And if you felt like that, what would you do?

And if you were to do that, what outcome could you expect?

Exploring version 2 isn't about making you wrong or distorting the facts. In fact, it's often about revisiting the facts - only this time, stripping away the emotion that so easily distorts them and bends them into our worst fears.

Fears that leave us diminished, defensive and small.

Fears we have the power to choose not to feel at all.

To learn more about the transformative power of version 2 look no further than the philosophy, mindset and call to action I teach that is be the first. "I'm the only one" is version 1.

"I'm the first" is version 2.

Same circumstances. 2 versions - each leading to completely different sets of feelings, actions and outcomes.

This one packs a punch. Be sure to tune in.

P.S. Finding version 2 of your experience of being a black lawyer is a skill I teach you inside Be The First and the earlier in your career you start learning, and the longer you continue to reinforce it, the better. On 1st May 2026 I'm opening the doors to the Be The First Membership - a monthly pay as you go membership programme giving you online access to a library of resources and coaching support to connect, support and empower you to thrive as a black lawyer. Save the date. Watch this space.

There are invisible forces behind all you do. They impact how you work, what you say, what you do, how you react - and because of that they have a direct impact on your ability to succeed as a black lawyer. And in this video I'm going to tell you exactly what they are.

Welcome my friends, to Emotions. Specifically, the emotions you need to feel if you want to progress to the next level. This is part 4 of a 5-part series on What It Takes to succeed as a black lawyer, so if you haven't done so already, be sure to watch parts 1-3 in previous videos.

So let's start by acknowledging the reality:

While some of you may have awareness of your emotions and would willingly talk about them, the nature of being a lawyer and working in a fast paced, competitive, time-pressured environment means that the majority of you simply don't have time to think about your emotions on a day to day basis, let alone feel them and have authority over them.

But when we ignore our emotions we miss out on a powerful part of our nature as humans which not only helps explain why we're not where we want to be, but can also be used to help us get here we want to go.

It's the emotions that will help you get to where you want to go that are the focus of these episode.

In it you'll learn about the 5 emotions you need to feel in order to progress as a black lawyer. These are:

  1. desire
  2. courage
  3. discomfort
  4. confidence (in who you are)
  5. empowerment

Each of these motions has a powerful role to play in motivating you to achieve your goal, supporting you to navigate the black experience and activating you to do what it takes to succeed.

Here's what you'll learn

  1. Why emotions are important and never to be ignored
  2. The top 5 emotions you need to succeed and why you need them
  3. An easy way to identify those emotions from other areas of your life so you can learn to generate them when you need them
  4. What you learn about managing your emotions inside Be The First

If you've invested time and effort in your professional development and followed all the right steps to achieve that career goal, but nothing seems to be working - this one is for you.

Welcome to episode 117 of Legal Impostors. I'm Caroline Flanagan, the Black Lawyers' Coach, and today I'm bringing you part 3 of a 5 part series on what it takes to succeed where you are and keep progressing all the way to the top.

In Part 1 we talked about Ownership (episode 114). In Part 2 we talked about Skills (episode 1116). Now let's talk about the thing that's the easiest of all to ignore, be oblivious to and overlook: Mindset

Here's what you'll learn:

  1. What mindset is and why it matters
  2. The Be The First Mindset I recommend you adopt as a black lawyer to help you achieve your potential in a white world
  3. The empowering thoughts I choose to think about myself and which I invite you to try on and see
  4. The work required to develop a new mindset and what to expect when you do

How do you want to finish the year? Depleted and exhausted or uplifted and empowered by the feeling that you gave it your all? It's a choice you get to make and I invite you to make it in this week's episode of legal imposters.

This time of year people typically fall into one of two camps: fire fighting to the bitter end; or throwing the towel in and giving up on the hope of achieving anything more.

Which one is you?

Wherever youre at I'm here to offer you a third option - the option to finish strong!

Finishing strong isnt about working harder. Its about asking yourself the simple questions that provoke useful reflection and call you to action, enabling you to work smarter in the limited time you have left before the end of the year.

Finishing Strong is a proven process I teach my clients inside Be the first! It's 3 simple questions you can answer in 10 short minutes to help you take control of December and transform it into your month of opportunity:

  1. What were your 2025 goals?

  2. How close are you now?

  3. How can you finish strong?

Tune in to this weeks episode where I walk you through each question and share real world examples of how I use this process to powerful effect with my clients and in my own life at this time of year..

Here's what you'll learn:

  • The common mistake people make as they approach the end of the year

  • How finishing strong will set you up for success in the new year

  • What to expect when you follow this process and how not to hold it against yourself

Happy listening.

It's time. No, not time to start thinking about Christmas which is just 4 weeks away - I'll let you decide when you're ready for that!

No, I'm talking about the New Year which is a seemingly distant SIX weeks away! Now before you roll your eyes to the heavens and rush for the "listen at the end of the year button" hear me out.

If you want to achieve your goals in 2026, the time to set those goals and plan for successfully achieving those goals, that time starts NOW. Not on 31 December. Not 1 January. Now.

I've been coaching on this topic all week inside Be the First. I've been asking my clients to set their 6 month goals for 2026 as one of the ways to finish the year strong. And what I noticed inside this coaching conversation was how many of my clients used the words "focus on" to describe their goals for next year.

I'm going to focus on my visibility

I'm going to focus on my relationships

I'm going to focus on showcasing my value

Is this you? Is your goal to "focus on" something? Or is it to achieve it?

6 months into 2026 do you want to be able to say you focused on your visibility? Or do you want to be able to say you are 10 x more visible than you were at the start of the year?

There's a difference and it's an important one. "Focusing on" or "Working on" (that's another expression that comes up) an aspect of your career doesn't get you promoted. The Result does. So it's not enough to focus on your visibility if you want to progress. You've got to be visible.

In this week's episode of Legal Imposters I explain why. I show you the limitations of choosing "focus" as your goal and the dramatic shift that occurs when you frame your goal as a result you are going to create.

Here's what you'll learn:

  1. why planning to focus on your goals is slowing you down
  2. The Results Test and using it to plan for results
  3. How uncomfortable goal-setting for results can feel (and why you must be willing to feel it)
  4. Why you should stop waiting for January to get started on your new year goals and start moving towards those goals now.

P.S. Enrolment for the January class of Be the First! opens December 10th. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you want to progress to the next level in 2026, this is the room you want to be in and now is the time to join. You've finally got that meeting with your boss so you can ask those career critical questions about your prospects for promotion:

Where do I stand?

How close am I?

Am I on track?

What else can I do to guarantee I'm on the list of next year's Partners?

You've asked all of this before.

But you keep being met with that same frustrating response:

You're doing fine

You're doing everything right

Just keep doing what your doing

In other words, you get a whole lot of words with not a lot of substance

Nothing you can build a progression plan around

Nothing you can action to make the decision to promote you a done deal

And it is SOOO frustrating.

If this is you you're not alone

It's exactly what I've been coaching on this week inside Be the First! and in this episode I'm going to tell you how to solve for it using the Foolproof Feedback Framework (FFF).

The FFF is a framework to help ensure you get exactly what you came for at your next annual review, even when the person you work for has nothing helpful or constructive to say.

This may sound like a 'cross your fingers and hope for the best' kind of strategy

It's anything but

It's a concrete way of taking ownership of your progression so that no matter how disengaged or unhelpful your Partner tries to be, you still walk away with valuable information you can action to your advantage.

In episode 111 of the podcast I show you how. In it I walk you through the 3-part Foolproof Feedback Framework - a process I created for clients inside Be the First! that guarantees you'll get value from every conversation, even when they try to fob you off with generalities.

P.S. If you're a mid to senior black lawyer and you want to progress in the next 6 to 12 months, Be the First! is the room you want to be in. Enrolment for January 2026 opens on December 10th so now is the time to prepare. Click here or the link in my profile for details.

You're drowning in your commitments. Working long into the night each day. Sacrificing weekends.

It's all too much but you keep going.

You don't stop.

You can't stop, you tell yourself.

I don't want to let anybody down.

Well I'm here to tell you otherwise

Not only that you can.

I'm here to tell you that you must.

"I can't let anyone down' may seem like an innocuous noble thought.

But this thought is holding you back in your career and putting your health at risk.

And as long as you keep thinking it, and holding yourself to its standard, things will never change.

In episode 110 of Legal Imposters I help you change all of that by doing the one thing you cannot fathom doing: letting people down.

I warn you. It's going to be uncomfortable. It's going to feel terrible. That, my friend, is the point!

When you intentionally let someone down the way I teach you to in this episode, two things are going to happen:

First, you'll get an immediate moment of respite from the overworking you're doing right now

Second, you'll break the cycle of over-committing yourself and learn to say yest without overcommitting.

The ability to say yes without overcommitting yourself to the point of burnout is a skill you need to develop now. The sooner you master it the faster you'll progress to the next level and the easier it'll be to sustain that progress when you get there.

P.S. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you want to progress in the next 6 to 12 months, join Be The First where I'll teach you how to take control of your time so you stop overcommitting yourself and learn to progress without the risk of burnout. Enrolment for January 2026 opens in December so now's the time to get ready. For details of what the coaching programme does and how much it costs, visit BE THE FIRST Coaching

Want to win a Sponsor? There are 3 things you need to do:

  1. Identify the right Sponsor Candidate
  2. Build a Sponsorship Relationship
  3. Hold a Sponsorship Conversation

These 3 steps form what we call inside BE THE FIRST, the Sponsorship Triad, and they form a simple actionable process for getting the right support from the right people to guarantee you achieve your progression goal.

In last week's episode of Legal Imposters I introduced you to part 3 of the Sponsorship Triad: the Sponsorship Conversation. In it I gave you an actionable framework for getting a potential sponsor to commit to advocating on your behalf.

This week we're talking about the step before: the Sponsorship Relationship - what it is and why it's absolutely critical to the Sponsor winning process. (I also explain why I tackled part 3 first, before coming to this part 2)

In addition to walking you through the 3 simple steps to winning a sponsor, here's what you'll learn:

  • The no.1 objective when building a Sponsorship Relationship
  • 3 scenarios where building the Sponsorship Relationship is the answer
  • 9 ways to win over a potential sponsor
  • 3 ways you get stuck trying to win a sponsor (and what to do instead)

Let's talk about Sponsors. Why you need one and how to win one.

You don't have to have a Sponsor to progress to the next level. But having a person of influence invested in you and going out to bat for you Is going to make achieving that promotion significantly quicker, easier and likely to result in success. Especially if you're a black lawyer.

There are 3 steps to winning a sponsor:

  1. Identify the Right Sponsor
  2. Earn trust by building the Sponsorship Relationship; and
  3. Get a firm commitment to sponsor you by having the Sponsorship Conversation

Together these 3 make up the Sponsorship Triad, a model I teach you inside BE THE FIRST that makes the work of winning a sponsor so clear and actionable, you'll wonder what you'd ever have done without it.

In this week's episode of Legal Imposters we focus on part 3 of the Sponsorship Triad: The Sponsorship Conversation.

Heres what you'll learn:

  1. The common mistakes lawyers make when seeking a Sponsor
  2. The 3 parts of the Sponsorship Triad and how they work together
  3. The purpose of the Sponsorship Conversation and why never to assume you have a Sponsor without one
  4. A framework for holding a Sponsorship Conversation you can start using today, including examples from Clients inside BE THE FIRST
  5. The top 3 commitments to seek from your Sponsor

Happy listening.

There are 3 things you need in place to guarantee your career goal:

  1. A clear goal
  2. A strategy that will get you there
  3. A system that will keep you on track

You may have a goal and a strategy. But do you have a system for staying on track?

If you don't then this week's episode of Legal Imposters, where I introduce you to the Monthly Progress Review, is just what you need.

The Monthly Progress Review (MPR) is exactly what it claims to be: a chance to pause and reflect on the progress you've made over the past month (as well as the progress you haven't or where you've been getting stuck) in a way that supports you to keep going and keeps you on track.

The MPR has so many benefits. It helps you recommit to your goal. It helps you see what's working and notice what isn't working. It ensures you celebrate the progress you would otherwise discount, ensuring you stay motivated and keep taking the right action. Most usefully, it's a framework for holding yourself accountable for what you said you were going to do last month and what you plan to do going forward.

It doesn't matter how motivated you are, things will always get in the way of your goal - busyness; life's distractions; emotional discomfort, fatigue. No one is immune to these challenges. The difference between those who achieve their goals and those who don't is the system that keeps you on track when these challenges come up.

If you're a mid to senior black lawyer who wants to progress within the industry, the coaching and support you receive inside Be The First is one part of that system. The Monthly Progression is another.

In this episode:

  1. 10 reasons the Monthly Progression Review (MPR) is critical to your progress
  2. The 4 universal factors that will get in the way of your goal (and what to do about them)
  3. How often you should review your progress
  4. A 4 question framework for conducting an effective MPR
  5. Small steps to make your MPR easier and more effective

P.S. If you're a mid to senior black lawyer and you want to progress to the next level in the next 6 to 12 months, I can help you with that. What are you doing to make sure the most important asset in your work, in your life, in the family that you hold together, the people you support, the clients you serve, those you love and the things you care about - in other words YOU - what are you doing to ensure you are taking care of your own needs?

Here's why this matters:

The more senior you get, the more is going to be demanded of you

The less time you have and the more you need to get done

The more people you will lead and the fewer people you will have to follow

The less time you will have for yourself and yet the lonelier it will sometimes feel

All of this makes taking care of yourself not just a requirement, but a responsibility.

Here's what I see:

You don't talk about self care openly with other leaders, you think it's just you

You don't ask for help with self care, because you think you should be able to figure this out on your own

The result is that far too many leaders are leading from a place of exhaustion, depletion, running on empty and teetering on the bring of a health issue.

If this is you you're in the right place.

In today's video I'm going to help you change this.

In it I teach you the value and importance of looking after your physical and mental health and I introduce you to the Self Care Protocol - a tool I teach my clients inside BE THE FIRST to ensure they never neglect their self care and they show up in their lives as the best leaders they can be.

In this episode:

  1. What the Self Care Protocol is and how it works
  2. Create your unique Self Care Protocol in 3 simple steps
  3. What to expect when you attempt to follow the protocol
  4. 4 powerful tools from inside BE THE FIRST that will keep you on track

This episode gives you everything you need to get started on your Self Care Protocol today. Want feedback on your Self Care Protocol? Why not share yours on Linkedin or IG or send over for me to take a look?

P.S.

If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you want to progress your legal career I invite you to join BE THE FIRST. I teach you everything you need to succeed to the next level, including the self care strategy that will sustain you along the way. Let's talk about procrastination -

Doom scrolling

Online shopping

Burying your head in the sand

Ignoring the task until it's on fire and screaming for your attention

These are just some of the ways you are procrastinating your work and, in so doing, creating unnecessary pressure, missing opportunities and jeopardising your chances of promotion.

If this is you and you're tired of holding yourself back, tune into this week's episode of Legal Imposters because I know exactly how to help you.

You'll learn that the symptom of procrastination and the underlying cause of procrastination are two different things calling for different solutions.

Want quick relief from your procrastination now so you can get your work done today? Stay with the hard.

Want to break the recurring habit of procrastinating so it stops holding you back in your career? Remember who you are

Stay With The Hard and Remember Who You Are are both tools that work and belong in your toolkit. In this episode I focus on Stay With The Hard and walk you through a simple 3 step process you can use right now to get that work you've been avoiding done today.

I also introduce you to Remember Who You Are - the process for overcoming Imposter Syndrome so you:

  • get quicker at catching yourself in the act of procrastinating
  • build resilience to doing hard things so procrastination happens less often
  • stop being the person who always procrastinates and become the version of you who gets to work and gets it done

Here's the problem:

You know you must showcase your value if you want to progress to the next level (it's step 5 of the career progression process I teach you inside BE THE FIRST), but you don't really KNOW your value.

Which of these is you?

  1. you've never thought to consider what your value is - you just work hard doing your day job and assume it'll be enough
  2. despite years of experience, you're still sitting silent in meetings thinking "what is my value" and "I have no value to add"
  3. you limit your value - for example with thoughts like "I'm only as good as my last deal"
  4. you underestimate your value - for example, by thinking "I'm the only one" instead of recognising you're the first.
  5. you miscalculate your value - for example, you think a track record of having met your billable targets makes you eligible for promotion

If any of these is you, you're not alone. I've been there, I see it all the time and I get it. It has never been easy to confront the question "What is my value?" and then figure out a way to answer it.

Until now.

In this week's episode of Legal Imposters Idon't just invite the question "What is my value?" I tell you exactly how to answer it. In it I give you a unique tool for calculating your value that you won't find anywhere else. That tool is the BTF Value Equation - a plug and play value calculator that I created for my clients inside BE THE FIRST and which I'm sharing with you for free here on Legal Imposters.

Excited? You should be.

The Value Equation has multiple functions. Use it in your career to:

  1. Understand your true value in the workplace and how it is measured
  2. Feel confident in your value so you perform more to your potential
  3. Talk about your value in normal conversation
  4. Showcase your value to position you for promotion
  5. Increase your value to increase your prospects for promotion

This tool has been a game changer for me and for my clients inside BE THE FIRST. Use it correctly and I promise it'll do the same for you.

P.S. Are you going to BCF 2025? If you're a mid to senior level associate, don't miss my Value Workshop where I'll be teaching you the Value Equation in detail and walking you through the process of understanding and showcasing your value to position yourself for that next promotion.

P.P.S. Inside BE THE FIRST I teach you how to Showcase your value as part of a proven 5 step process for progressing to the next level measurably and sustainably. The next enrolment is coming. How much do you value yourself? Here's how you know:

  1. the way you treat yourself
  2. the way you talk about yourself to others
  3. how well you take care of yourself
  4. how you present yourself

This is not about your value in the workplace.

This is about your self worth. Your worthiness. Your belief in your innate value as a human being and the value, potential and brilliance inherent within that.

As I explain in this week's episode, this is your intrinsic value and it's very different to your commercial or business value.

There are 3 reasons why valuing yourself matters:

  1. Your worthiness as a human is completely independent of the circumstances outside of you or people around you. So it doesn't matter what's going on in your career or relationships, your self worth should never change.
  2. Although independent of others, your belief in your own value does influence how much they value you and treat you. So the more you value yourself, the easier you make it for others to see your value and treat you accordingly.
  3. When you value yourself, you're sufficient. You don't need to chase validation or proof of your value. This frees you up to focus on showcasing your business value - i.e. the value you bring to your firm or organisation that's a prerequisite for your next promotion.

If you've ever found yourself questioning your self worth or relying on external factors (your achievements, external validation from others) to feel worthy and valuable, this episode is for you.

Happy listening.

P.S. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you've ever confused your self worth with your career worth, I can help you with that. If you don't go for what you want in your career now, then when will you?

Right now there are a lot of reasons why you're not taking that active next step towards achieving your career goal:

you're not sure you want it

you're in the middle of a deal

things are too busy right now

you just need to get through this period

you're waiting for your next pay check

you've got a financial commitment coming up

These are the reasons you tell me you want to progress your career inside BE THE FIRST but now is not the right time.

But what sounds like a plausible reason for waiting, is actually a cover story for procrastination.

In this episode I challenge you to look beneath the cover story of why you put things off and get curious about the real reasons keeping you stuck.

The fear of failure

The fear that going for your goal will be hard

The fear you might fail

The fear that you might succeed

The fear of other peoples expectations

When these are the real reasons behind your procrastination the way forward becomes crystal clear: no more waiting for a future time, for the conditions to be perfect and for the fears to subside. The right time to join BE THE FIRST and go for what you want is now.

Tune in to discover more.

You're a mid to senior level black lawyer with years of experience and a track record of billing hours and running deals.

Yes this will make you eligible for promotion, but it doesn't make you entitled to it.

One of the common misconceptions I hear is that years worked, hours billed and weekends and evenings sacrificed should guarantee you that next role.

Have you ever thought: "they owe it to me" or "after everything I've done / all the hours I've worked, they better give it to me!" or something along those lines?

Many of you have come to me shocked and disappointed when a promotion you thought was guaranteed, unexpectedly went to someone else. How could this happen? you ask. After everything I've done!

Here's the thing. Promotion isn't about your past performance. It's about your future promise - i.e. what the powers that be believe you'll bring to the table and contribute to the pie after you've been promoted. While your past performance is an indicator of that, it is by no means a guarantee.

This means your no. 1 job as a senior black lawyer is to position yourself as someone who belongs in the room and brings a lot to the table.

I tell you exactly how to do this in episode 101 of Legal Imposters: Position Yourself for Promotion.

In it I give you a 6 step process and the powerful mindset you need to position yourself for promotion and guarantee your success in a white world.

Although it's only 6 steps, positioning yourself for promotion can be challenging to do alongside your day job and particularly as a black lawyer. That's why I created BE THE FIRST - the career progression coaching programme for mid to senior level black lawyers where I give you a blueprint for progressing to the next level and I coach you every step of the way.

If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you have your sights set on promotion in the next 6 to 12 months, now is the time to join. ENROLMENT for the September 2025 class opens TOMORROW Thursday 21st August for 7 days and there are 10 slots available. We're reached Episode 100! Woohoo

To mark the occasion, what better topic to talk to you about than being the first?

Specifically, let's talk about how it makes you feel when I tell you the answer to succeeding in a white world is to BE THE FIRST!

Inspiration for this episode comes from one of my clients inside BE THE FIRST who confessed that the idea of being the first really inspired her but it also made her feel pressured.

Is this you? Have you heard me say "Be the first" and felt pressure? Or fear?

If the answer is yes, you're in exactly the right place. (If the answer is no and the call to be the first lights a fire in your belly, don't go away. There's plenty here for you too).

BE THE FIRST isn't an obligation to act.

It's a call on you to believe.

  • Believe you are the first
  • Believe there's no one like you
  • Believe you are one of a kind
  • Believe you are uniquely valuable
  • Believe you can be who you can't see
  • Believe you're the one they need
  • Believe you add value to the room just being in the room

This level of belief doesn't produce pressure. It creates power.

Believing your the first ignites a fire in your belly

You recognise the power you have

You become big

The challenges and obstacles around you become small

No diversity, being excluded, exposure to racism - none of it can stop you.

The next time I call on you to BE THE FIRST and you feel pressure, catch yourself

This isn't an obligation to act

This is a call to believe

P.S. In BE THE FIRST you learn the BE THE FIRST Mindset and Strategy for progressing your career to the next level and achieving success in a white world. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you want the promotion, now is the time to join. Doors open on 21st August for 7 days and I have 10 spots available. Email me at caroline@carolineflanagan.com to register your interest and I'll send you more details.

It's never too soon to think about Business Development.

But when should this be your main focus? And what should you do about Business Development when you've been told to focus on something else?

This week on Legal Imposters, inspired by a client inside BE THE FIRST, we're talking about the importance of building your book of business and what to do when, for reasons personal or professional, you're unable to make this your primary focus.

When you're at the very start of your career, this doesn't matter so much.

But what do you do when you're trying to build your business case for promotion and you're told by the Partner you work for not to focus on Business Development?

This was the dilemma facing my client.

If this has happened to you, you're in the right place. Even if it hasn't, knowing what to do when Business Development can't be your main focus is going to ensure you're never left scrambling around for a business case because of all the relationships you've neglected to build over time.

How you avoid this is simple: you keep your Business Development at a simmer. Just as you would a saucepan of hot water, you maintain a low level of activity that enables you to focus your attention elsewhere without neglecting your Business Development altogether.

This has two advantages:

  1. When the time is right to make Business Development your primary focus, all you have to do is turn the heat up. The water is already simmering. It takes relatively little effort to bring it to the boil. So it is with the low level Business Development activity that you've been maintaining all along. It takes nothing to ramp up your relationship building to full capacity. Your relationships are already warm. All you have to do is step things up and call them in.
  2. When the time comes, you'll have highly developed relationship building skills. This ensures you're not having to learn these skills in the exact same moment you want to use them. You've acquired them over time through the simple act of keeping your Business Development at a simmer.

So how do you do it? How to keep your Business Development at a simmer so you can focus elsewhere?

Below are 4 suggestions to get you started.

  1. Stay connected to peers and those you already know
  2. Deepen relationships with the clients you currently serve
  3. Watch and learn from those who already do it well
  4. Develop your understanding of how the business operates by filtering actions and decisions through a business lens

What else could you do? Can you think of more? Share your ideas in the comments.

P.S. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you want to progress to the next level in your career, I can help you with that. Join BE THE FIRST career progression coaching for black lawyers and learn the 5 vital steps to progressing your career as a black lawyer and be coached by me every step of the way. Enrolment for the September 2025 class opens 21st August 2025. Save this date to your calendar and make sure you follow me on social media so you don't miss the announcement.

Building relationships with people who are different to you is one of the 5 vital steps to progressing your career as a black lawyer and it's exactly what I teach you inside BE THE FIRST. But what do you do when it doesn't work?

This was the question one of my clients brought to coaching inside BE THE FIRST and it's the question I'm answering for you in this week's episode of Legal Imposters.

You know the experience: you reach out to a partner in another office who you hope will send you more work; or you take a potential client to an event with a follow up over lunch and in either case, nothing happens. So you throw your hands up in despair and declare:

"I've tried but it's not working"

"I've been making the effort but I'm not getting anything out of it"

This, my friend, isn't relationship building. It's transaction chasing.

Transaction chasing is when you go through the motions of building the relationship but you're focused on what's in it for you.

Transaction chasing will keep you busy, but it won't bring you the support you need to progress, the opportunities to showcase your value or the clients to support your business case.

None of this comes from the transaction.

It comes from the relationship.

Relationship building isn't about you and what you can get out of it, it's about the person you're building the relationship with. It's you getting to know them as a human being, discovering what they want, need and care about and finding as many ways as you can to add value.

There's more.

It's not enough to know them. You have to let them know you and be willing to keep building the relationship for as long as it takes for connection to form.

This is how you build relationships that progress your career.

P.S. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you're struggling to build the relationships that will launch your career to the next level, I can help you with that. Join BE THE FIRST career progression coaching for black lawyers to learn the 5 vital steps to progressing your career as a black lawyer and be coached by me every step of the way. "I think it went well" is not how you should be talking about your latest success or achievement! Showcasing your value isn't just about the showcase (a training event you delivered, a panel event you moderated, for example) it's about how you talk about it, gain confidence from it and how much your value increases as a result of it.

None of this is evident from "I think it went well".

"I think it went well" is a lazy rendition of something you worked hard to prepare for and successfully delivered. Not only does it undermine your success, it devalues your contribution.

As a black lawyer who wants to progress to the next level, you can't afford to do this. Evaluating your own performance and being able to talk about it with confidence and ease is essential. Don't wait for others to connect the dots between the work you did and the successful outcome that was created and recognise this as value. You've got to connect the dots yourself and make it easy for all to see.

If this sounds daunting or hard, don't worry. I walk you through exactly why and how you need to do this in episode 97 of the Legal Imposters' Podcast: "I think it went well"

Inspired by a client inside BE THE FIRST whose evaluation of a client panel event she organised and moderated was "I think it went well", this episode will tell you everything you need to know about getting value out of showcasing your value.

You'll discover why showcasing your value is such a huge opportunity and learn a 4 step process for getting the most out of every showcase.

P.S. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and showcasing your value is something you struggle with, join BE THE FIRST and let me help you with that as part of a career progression strategy that will take you to the next level in your career.

Are you ready? We're going to increase your visibility and we're committing to it right now.

In today's episode of the Legal Imposters Podcast I introduce you to the 30 Day Visibility Challenge - a challenge to get you out of your comfort zone and into the spotlight where people can see you, get to know you and keep you front of mind.

I know this is daunting. I know the thought of it makes you want to run and hide. I know if there was any way to avoid it and still get the promotion you're looking for you would seize it with both hands! (Full disclosure: so would I!)

But there's no escaping the truth my friend: if you want to progress your career as a black lawyer, people need to know who you are.

This is why being highly visible is step 4 of the 5 vital steps for progressing your career as a black lawyer that I teach you inside BE THE FIRST.

It's the thing that gets you included and invited, it's the thing that influences your work allocation, and it's the number one thing that will get you the firm-wide or organisation-wide support you need to be admitted to the next level.

So why a 30-day Visibility Challenge?

The 30-day Visibility Challenge is what you do during Visibility month inside BE THE FIRST to motivate you, inspire you, support you and hold you accountable to increasing your visibility.

Because it's so much easier to step out of your comfort zone when you know a) it's for a limited period of time b) your peers are doing it at the same time (and are similarly uncomfortable) and c) you have a Coach who you trust walking you every step of the way.

So if you want to progress your career this year, join us!

You can do the challenge on your own (in the episode I tell you how), but if you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you want to progress your career this year you don't have to go it alone. Join BE THE FIRST and let's increase your visibility together.

Enrolment for the class of September 2025 opens 21 August. Save the date and follow me on social so you don't miss the announcement and you get your application in before the deadline. How are you coming across? What perception do others have of you and is this perception working for you or against you in your career?

For some of you, this will be the first time thinking about this question.

For others of you, the idea that other people perceive you a certain way isn't new to you. But where that perception is a negative one, you most likely feel powerless to do anything about it.

We're going to change that in this episode.

Understanding how other people perceive you is important for 3 reasons:

  1. Negative stereotypes are a reality - as a black lawyer if you haven't been confronted by negative stereotypes in your career then it's only a matter of time before you do, whether directly or indirectly. This is a reality of the world we live and work in, so it's important to be aware of it and have the tools to navigate it.
  2. Other people's perception of you determines how they treat you - from the work they allocate to you, their keenness to include you or support you and their willingness to promote you, all of this is heavily influenced by the perception they have of you.
  3. Everything you do to increase your visibility as part of your career progression strategy will turn the volume up on other people's perception of you. If other people's perception of you aligns and supports your progression goal, this is perfect. If it doesn't, then the visibility work you're doing will work against you rather than for. you. We definitely don't want that.

Whether you know how other people perceive you right now or not, you're going to find this episode invaluable. First, you'll learn why this topic is so important. Second, you'll discover exactly how to find out what perception other people have of you. Third, you're going to learn how to change other people's perception of you by building an intentional and authentic brand.

P.S. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you're ready to build your intentional brand, I invite you to join BE THE FIRST. The next enrolment is 21st August 2025 where you'll be enrolling for the September 2025 class. The question I want to ask you today is, are you ready to progress?

It's not enough to have a strategy to progress. You also need to be READY to progress.

Here's how you know you're ready:

  • You balance your time, making time for the other things that matter, meaning you prioritise your self care and you take care of your personal relationships.
  • You handle your day job with calm and ease. Even in the face of tough deadline, even when the unexpected happens.
  • You have confidence in who you are, so you aren't dependent on external validation to know you're good at what you do and you don't make negative feedback mean something negative about you
  • You feel supported, personally as well as professionally, meaning there are people who've got your back and want to see you succeed.

Balance. Ease. Confidence. Support. These are the 4 Progression Pillars and, although they are not the core of your progression strategy, they ARE an essential part of it.

The 4 Progression Pillars don't just support you to progress to the next level. They help you succeed there and sustain you when you get there so you're much more likely to stay there.

One of the common mistakes I see on the road to partnership or other promotion is going for the goal and sacrificing everything else on the way. This is not a clever strategy and neither is it a winning one.

Ignoring the 4 pillars while you go for promotion has a cost. It's like pressing the accelerator and the break at the same time - it slows you down, creates friction along the way so everything is harder and reduces your chance of getting there.

Today's episode is going to change all of that. In it I explain what it means to be ready to progress and I walk you through what's required.

Want to know if you're ready to progress? Complete the Progression Audit and find out today. This is the exact audit I get my clients to complete when they join BE THE FIRST, to look at their readiness to progress. Today I'm offering this audit to you free of charge so you can start the essential work of understanding where you are. Click here to complete the audit:

What's in a name?

Everything.

Until now you thought your name was just a name.

It is so much more than that.

Your name is your anchor. It's your identity. It's your brand. It's the connection to your capability and a powerful reminder of who you are at your core.

This week on Legal Imposters we're talking about the value of your name and the potential it has to make you feel unique and valuable and confident in who you are so you show up to your potential.

But before your name can have such a powerful impact on how you feel and the work you do, first you need to claim it.

That's exactly what I help you do in this episode.

I give you 3 simple steps for claiming your name so you can connect to it, identify with it and utilise it as a confidence building tool.

I share how your name is the first (and, when used intentionally, the most important) line of your IMPOSTER SPEECH, which you build inside CONFIDENT Black Lawyers. This is the pep talk you need when your Imposter Syndrome has been triggered, to overcome the feeling of not-enoughness and give you the confidence to do great work.

If you're a black lawyer, at any career stage, and deep down you know you're capable of more, join CONFIDENT Black Lawyers and claim your name as part of a 5 step process for building confidence in who you are so Imposter Syndrome never holds you back. How do you speak to yourself and treat yourself?

What words and judgements are unconsciously playing, like a sound track in the back of your mind, as you go through the day?

What you say to yourself in the quiet of your mind matters. How you speak to yourself when you've made a mistake, your readiness to celebrate yourself and recognise your contribution when you have a success - all of this matters deeply to how confident you are at your core and how well you perform in the work place.

In this week's episode of Legal Imposters I invite you to turn inward and listen to your inner dialogue.

I explain how negative self talk is sabotaging your success and the importance of catching it, recognising it and changing it so you become your own champion.

Being your own champion isn't about being cocky or arrogant.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary desribes a champion as someone who vigorously supports and defends a person (or cause).

This is exactly what I encourage you to do from this moment on: vigorously support and defend yourself, in the face of both success and failure, so you have the confidence to fulfil your potential.

P.S. If you're black lawyer, at any level, and you're tired of undermining your own confidence with self criticism and judgment, CONFIDENT Black Lawyers is for you. In it I walk you through a proven process for connecting to your capability so you become your own greatest champion and have the confidence to succeed in a white world. Telling yourself there aren't enough hours in the day

Frustrated by the uncontrollables that sabotage your plans and throw you off track

Wanting to progress to the next level but not having the time to dedicate to it

Having too much to do and too little energy to do it with

If this is you, you're going to love this week's episode of the Legal Imposters' Podcast: Expanding Your Capacity

In it I define expanding your capacity so you can do, think and feel at a higher level. Think lifting weights in the gym. Currently (thanks to historic shoulder issues) the heaviest I can lift over head in a shoulder press is 10kg. I want to progress to 12kg. To do that I need to expand my capacity to lift weights above my head i.e. I need to get stronger!

So what does this have to do with being a black lawyer? Well there are 4 reasons why expanding your capacity is a skill you want to build:

  1. You want to progress your career, which is going to require more of you to get there (time spent building relationships and increasing your visibility for example) AND more of you when you get there (more responsibility and bigger deals, for example)
  2. You're underestimating what you're capable of - giving in too soon when things don't happen when and the way you want them too, or setting goals that are too small, so you're performing way below your potential.
  3. So you can grow! Growth brings increased discomfort. If you want to grow, you need to increase your capacity to experience the inevitable fear and doubt that comes with stepping out of your comfort zone.
  4. So you can lawyer with more ease. If you're struggling at your current level, expanding your capacity will mean doing your day job with calm and ease, without the stress and anxiety.

Here's what I cover:

  • The difference between capacity and capability and why they both count
  • The 3 game changing results you create when you expand your capacity
  • How to expand your capacity in 4 simple steps, starting today
  • What the IMPOSTER SPEECH is and how capable you feel when you use it
  • The lifetime value of expanding your capacity which makes it the gift that keeps giving year after year

Questions about this process? Send me a DM on social media or reply in the comments.

P.S. If you're a black lawyer and you're ready to expand your capacity, join CONFIDENT Black Lawyers, the only confidence building programme that helps you succeed in a white world. Click here to join: https://caroline-flanagan.mykajabi.com/confident-black-lawyers

You need confidence NOW.

Currently, confidence feels like a nice to have. It feels optional. You know it's important. You know you need it and you want to build and increase it, but it doesn't feel urgent.

But building confidence IS urgent. It's both urgent AND important.

That makes building it, getting more of it, has to be at the top of your priority list.

In this episode I explain why.

I explain how every day you aren't building your confidence is another day lost to overworking and overthinking. Another day of unnecessary anxiety and stress. Another day edging closer to burn out.

How every day without confidence in who you are is another day thinking it's harder for people like us.

Feeling like you don't belong.

Needing everyone around you to change their behaviour.

Waiting for other people to validate you.

Every day without confidence in who you are means another day hiding from opportunities that have your name written all over them.

It means another day labouring away working twice as hard while your white peers are being seen and getting promoted, and you are being left behind.

Another day thinking negative feedback means something negative about you, making you defensive, launching you into yet more overworking, thinking the only answer is striving harder for perfection.

I know this feels like the way things are. I know you're resigned to this. But all of this is optional.

You don't HAVE to have another day like this.

Build confidence NOW and you will change all of this.

The minute you prioritise confidence you'll feel better instantly.

Just the decision to take ownership of your confidence will change you.

You'll feel a fire in your belly and start feeling stronger at your core. This switch can happen in an instant. It doesn't take days or weeks or months. Building confidence NOW means feeling better NOW.

It means less stress and anxiety, NOW.

Letting go of the need to be perfect, NOW.

It means working smarter, NOW.

Receiving negative feedback without getting defensive, NOW.

It means taking up space and being visible NOW, and attracting the recognition and support you need to progress, NOW.

None of this is months away or years away. It's one decision away.

Not the decision to WANT confidence (wanting confidence doesn't bring you any closer to being confident!).

It's the decision to prioritise confidence and build it NOW. Today. Literally this minute.

If you're a black lawyer, whatever your level, join CONFIDENT Black Lawyers NOW so you can build confidence NOW. In it I walk you through a step by step process for building confidence in who you are so you can overcome Imposter Syndrome and have the confidence to do great work and fulfil your true potential. When you tell yourself you're not enough

When you tell yourself "I shouldn't be here" and you're afraid of being found out

You need an IMPOSTER SPEECH

Every time you strive to make your work perfect to prove that you're enough

Every time you procrastinate doing the work from the fear of being exposed

You need an IMPOSTER SPEECH

When you do everything yourself

When you put off going for a promotion

When you side step opportunities you know deep down are right for you Every time you second guess yourself

Every time you take feedback personally

Every time you beat yourself up over a simple mistake

For all these times and more, you need an IMPOSTER SPEECH

An IMPOSTER SPEECH is the speech you give yourself when your Imposter Syndrome has been triggered and you're questioning whether you're enough.

In this episode I talk about what it is and why you need one now.

The IMPOSTER SPEECH takes you out of "not enoughness" and the actions you take as a result that slow you down, stifle your potential and hold you back in your career (see above list!)

It takes you out of this "not enoughness" and connects you to the version of you who is capable of anything you set your mind to so you have the confidence to do your best work -

  • the version of you who is accomplished and knowledgeable
  • who is driven and motivated
  • who is resilient and resourceful
  • who is determined and purposeful.

This version of you is CONFIDENT.

This version knows exactly what to do.

This version of you does great work.

This version of you doesn't need to overwork or overthink

This version of you seizes opportunities and makes themselves visible This version of you never judges you, and instead is your biggest champion

You need to access this version of you NOW.

Every day you are not this version of you is another day holding yourself back and performing beneath your potential.

Change this right now with an IMPOSTER SPEECH.

P.S. I've created a step by step process to help you build your IMPOSTER SPEECH and I walk you through every step inside CONFIDENT Black Lawyers. What do you say to yourself when you've just been promoted or just starting a new role and your brain offers you thoughts like "I shouldn't be here" and "I'm going to be found out"?

At times like this, it's tempting (and some people will recommend you do this) to remind yourself how hard you worked to get here.

But this is not the answer to Imposter Syndrome. This does not give you the confidence to get to work.

What you need instead when your Imposter Syndrome is triggered, is your IMPOSTER SPEECH.

Your Imposter Speech is a sequence of empowering thoughts about yourself that connect you to your capability and empower you to get to work.

This isn't something you make up on the spot, in the moment when your Imposter Syndrome has been triggered and you're in full doubting mode. This is something you create from a process that connects to who you are at your core, when you're in confidence mode.

In this Live I explain what the IMPOSTER SPEECH is, why it works and what it requires to create it AND, if you're a black lawyer and you're ready to overcome Imposter Syndrome this year, I present an unmissable opportunity to create your own IMPOSTER SPEECH live and in person with me on 31st May 2025 at CONFIDENCE Live!

The Confidence Gap is the gap between the confidence you've earned and the confidence you feel when it's time to get to work.

How wide is yours and what are you doing to bridge it?

Here's why this matters:

  1. The Confidence Gap is the measure of your unfulfilled potential - so the bigger the gap, the more you are capable of beyond your current performance

  2. When you're doubting yourself, or not performing to your potential, the Confidence Gap shows it's a confidence issue, NOT a capability issue. Good to know, so you can solve the right 'problem'

  3. That restless, frustrated feeling you get when you think about your career progression? That's the Confidence Gap at play - calling you to close the gap. Telling you you're capable of more.

  4. Your Confidence Gap isn't fixed in stone. Closing the gap so you fulfil more of your potential is something you can start doing today.

In episode 86 of the Legal Imposters Podcast I show you how.

Here's what you'll learn:

  1. How to close your Confidence Gap

  2. The difference between confidence in WHO YOU ARE, and confidence in WHAT YOU DO (and which should come first)

  3. How to start closing your Confidence Gap today

  4. Why you need to get started right away

P.S. In CONFIDENT Black Lawyers I help you build confidence in who you are, so you can overcome Imposter Syndrome and perform to your true potential. Enrolment is open. If you're a current or aspiring black lawyer, whatever your level of seniority, join now. Click the link in my profile for details.

When they constantly redline and correct your work, what do you do? What do you make it mean?

The mistake I see you making is taking it to mean something about you- that you're not good enough, that you don't deserve to be where you are and that any minute now you're going to be found out.

This is classic imposter syndrome and if you don't have a way to overcome it, it will undermine your confidence, sabotage your performance and hold you back from fulfilling your potential.

In this episode I explain how this can happen and exactly how to avoid it so you learn from all those redlines through your work vs. being undermined by them.

P.S. Looking to build your confidence as a black lawyer? Enrolment is open. Click HERE to join CONFIDENT Black Lawyers and build confidence in who you are so you can overcome Imposter Syndrome and be confident in what you do.

The most common mistake I see black lawyers making is thinking you have to work twice as hard as your white peers to progress.

This thought may have got you this far. But it won't get you where you want to go.

Working twice as hard sets you up as the workhorse and sends the message that you are a safe pair of hands.

This is fine if you want to stay where you are.

But if you want to progress to the next level, you need a completely different strategy.

This week I'm bringing you a replay of my recent LinkedIn LIVE: "Stop working twice as hard!" where I talked you through:

  1. How you know youre working twice as hard

  2. Why working twice as hard won't get you promoted

  3. What to do instead if you want to progress to the next level

P.S. BE THE FIRST May 2025 is open for enrolment until midnight (UK) 9 April. If you're a mid to senior level lawyer and you want to progress your career this year, now is the time to join.

Coaching starts on Tuesday 6th May 2025 at 2pm via Zoom and we meet the same time every week for 6 months (excluding August).

One of the best things you can do to progress your career is to become more valuable.

The more valuable you are, the more support you'll get, the more opportunities you'll attract and the more easily you'll progress your career.

To become more valuable you could increase your knowledge. You could broaden your experience and develop your expertise. But these can be hard to achieve when you're working all the hours and you're not being given the best work.

In this episode of the Legal Imposters Podcast I offer you an easier way to become more valuable: join BE THE FIRST.

BE THE FIRST is the career progression programme for mid to senior level black lawyers where I teach you everything you need to progress as a black lawyer and coach you every step of the way.

The minute you sign up to this programme you become more valuable.

The decision to be in the driving seat, to focus on what you can control, to stop waiting for the circumstances outside of you to change, to set goals and go to work to achieve them - these decisions change you. The version of you who reaches this level of decision is already more valuable than the version that went before.

It doesn't end there.

Every day you're in this programme - learning the skills you need to progress, implementing, getting coached when you get stuck - is another day you become more valuable.

I see it inside BE THE FIRST all the time -

The client who was constantly overwhelmed and stressed when she joined, who is now calm, more in control and better at meeting deadlines.

The client who couldn't delegate and did everything herself who is now the delegation queen (her words!) and has time to be proactive and think strategically.

The client who couldn't speak up in meetings who is now clear about her value, engages in meetings and more willingly shares her ideas.

The client who kept work colleagues at a distance who is now building rapport with clients he never thought he could connect with.

Transformations like this are happening every day inside BE THE FIRST. Clients are becoming more valuable every day and so will you, the moment you decide to join.

Enrolment for the May 2025 cohort is 3rd - 9th April 2025.

If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you want to progress this year, now is the time to join.

If you're hoping to get internal funding for your firm I recommend you have that conversation now so you get a decision before enrolment closes and have your option b ready to go if your firm or business say no.

Showcasing your value isn't bragging. It's understanding your audience's problem and letting them know you can solve it.

Showcasing your value is important. It's not enough to work hard. Keeping your head down and hoping the right people will notice isn't enough. You've got to show them: show people how valuable you are so you can attract the support and opportunities you deserve.

You already know this. The problem is, the fear of becoming cocky and sounding like you're bragging is holding you back.

You no longer have anything to fear.

In episode #78 of the Legal Imposters Podcast I show you why showcasing your value isn't a selfish act. It's an act of service to the Partner, line manager, clients and firm you work for who all have wants and needs. They all have problems to solve and are looking for you to help them solve them.

You showcasing your value isn't you saying "look at me I'm great" it's you saying "I'm the one who can help you."

This powerful mindset shift will change your approach to showcasing your value for ever. Instead of feeling like something you're supposed to do, it'll become the thing you want to do and feel compelled to do.

I explain it all in this week's episode and I give you 3 practical steps that will move you one step closer to showcasing your value today.

Happy listening.

P.S. In BE THE FIRST I teach you to showcase your value without feeling like you're bragging. You will learn the Value Equation, a unique and simple tool for knowing your value, recognising why it's of value to others and finding multiple ways to showcase that value with ease

This week I bring you a replay of an interview with networking expert, Charlie Lawson. Previously published on the podcast in 2023, this topic is so essential and the advice he shares so valuable I'm bringing it to you again.

"You don't have to like networking to be good at it "

So says Charlie Lawson, the Unnatural Networker and my guest this week on the Legal Imposters Podcast.

Charlie is the ex-BNI boss and unnatural networking expert with 2 books to his name on doing the things many of us find hard: networking and promoting yourself.

In this episode Charlie takes the fear out of networking by explaining what networking really is (having a conversation, building relationships) and how to network when you're shy, an introvert or you just don't like networking (an unnatural networker).

You won't be surprised to learn I met Charlie while networking on LinkedIn. He is a brilliant example of the power of building relationships and the infinite potential of networking to catapult your career or business.

Tune in to find out:

  1. Why I felt compelled to interview him on the podcast
  2. What an unnatural networker is (and how many of you are out there)
  3. Why you don't have to like networking to make it work for you
  4. The right mindset for successful networking
  5. A better conversation starter than "what do you do"?
  6. Why networking is not about who's in the room.

Mentioned in this episode:

About Charlie Lawson

Charlie Lawson is a very Unnatural Networker. Most experts talk about

networking as though it is easy to talk to strangers. Charlie helps other

Unnatural Networkers gain confidence by putting networking across from the point of view of someone whod rather avoid it completely.

His first book, The Unnatural Networker, was released in 2014, and has helped countless business owners learn how to network effectively. His second book, The Unnatural Promoter, was released in 2021, and focuses on helping people that don't like to blow their own trumpet to be brilliant at self-promotion.

Charlie is a renowned and highly regarded keynote speaker, and gained his expertise from 13 years as UK national director of BNI, the international business networking organisation. In his spare time, hell mostly be found swimming / biking / running in triathlons, while keeping his fingers crossed that Spurs finish above Arsenal in the league.

It's not enough to build relationships and grow your network. You've got to be able to take a relationship that isn't working and transform it into one that does.

As a black lawyer, progressing your career doesn't hinge on you building relationships. It hinges on building relationships with people different to you. This is fertile ground for the type of stereotyping, misunderstandings, false assumptions and misplaced expectations that can cause a breakdown in relationships that are the cornerstone of your career and therefore stop you progressing to the next level.

If you're struggling with a Partner who won't support you or a boss who seems to go out of their way to sabotage you, this episode is for you. In it I walk you through 3 common mistakes I see you making when it comes to relating to people different to you and what you can do to fix them.

This is Relate-Agility - a unique concept created from my decades of experience building relationships with people different to me which opened doors and brought in the support I needed to succeed. You'll learn all of this and more when you join BE THE FIRST Progression for Black Lawyers. The next enrolment is coming. The conditions are never perfect. You don't have to wait for the circumstances outside of you to change. You are resourceful. You will find a way.

If you are working for a law firm or organisation that has reaffirmed its commitment to developing black talent, this is fantastic news. But what if you're not?

Not everyone is working for a firm or organisation that is willing to invest time and budget in DEI. For those of you that never have, or don't anymore (because your organisation is pulling back) I know you are feeling pretty alone and scared and powerless right now.

If this is you, don't despair. I want you to know you're not alone. I am here to guide you and remind you you are more powerful than you think.

The conditions are never perfect. There are circumstances outside of your control.

But remember: You are resourceful. You will find a way.

It's very important that you believe this. It's essential that you internalise this. Work to find existing evidence of this. Live by this and make it your truth.

When you remember you are resourceful the first thing you'll do is notice how much you CAN control:

  • The relationships you build
  • Your willingness to learn and invest in your own development
  • How determined you are
  • Who you surround yourself with
  • What (information) you expose yourself to

When you remember you're resourceful the second thing you'll do is work with what you've got.

This might be practical (when I didn't have a desk to study at or a bed to sleep, I found 4 spare tyres and used those instead)

It might be situational (e.g. you're a paralegal struggling to get your training contract, great! you have a foot in the door)

It might be personal (e.g. building relationships is your superpower, so use it to grow your network and attract more opportunities)

Believing I'm resourceful and connecting to that resourcefulness is how I became bigger than my circumstances and achieved impossible goals. This works. It worked for me. This will work for you too.

P.S. If you're a black lawyer and you're feeling powerless and alone, let me help you. In CONFIDENT Black Lawyers I help you reconnect to your power and remember how resourceful you are, so you can be bigger than any circumstance. So you can achieve impossible goals. Relationships are the cornerstone of every successful legal career. It's through the relationships you build at work that you attract the support you need, invite the opportunities that excite you, keep people on your side and enjoy and perform better in your role.

But it's harder to build relationships when you're the only one. You have fewer obvious points of connection and the differences between you and your white peers make building relationships feel difficult and exhausting. Whether it's how you spend your holidays, what you do at the weekends, the food you and your family eat or the path you took to get where you are - all of these differences can create a barrier to connection when you don't have the skills to overcome them.

It's not surprising you dread networking events.

No wonder you'd rather network with people who look like you.

But it doesn't have to be this way. You can have all the advantages that your white peers have through their connections and their work relationships. All you need is a step by step process that teaches you how to build relationships with people different to you.

I've created that process just for you. It's called Relate-Agility and it's going to change your experience of relationship building forever.

I've taken everything I've learned about relationships and connection from decades of being the only one in the room and building relationships with people different to me. Since being the only black pupil in an all white school at the age of 5, to being the only one in the room as a finance lawyer in the City of London, the ability to build relationships with people different to me has been one of my superpowers and has been instrumental in my success.

Now I've broken down what I do and how I do it into a simple process that teaches you exactly how to do the same. That process is called Relate-Agility, and I can't wait for you to learn it inside BE THE FIRST.

In this session:

  1. Why building relationships are so important for your career and should be one of your top priorities even at the junior level
  2. Why it's harder to build relationships when you're the only one
  3. How Relate-Agility, my unique process for building relationships with people different to you is going to transform your approach to connection and empower you to walk into any room and connect with any one.

P.S. In BE THE FIRST I teach you Relate-Agility, the art of building relationships with people different to you so you have the relationships you need to support you and sustain you in your career. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you're ready to progress to the next level, BE THE FIRST is the coaching programme to be in. The next enrolment is coming. You don't have to become someone you're not when you become Partner. You can do partnership YOUR WAY.

One of the reasons you're hesitant to go for partnership is because of your fear of who you have to become to get there and how you'd have to behave to stay and succeed there.

You worry you won't be able to be authentic.

You worry you'll have to become a different type of leader

You worry that becoming partner will involve sacrificing the things that are important to you - like your work life balance and your weekends.

If this is you, you're not alone. I hear this all the time and it's one of the reasons why mid to senior level black lawyers join BE THE FIRST when they are thinking about progressing their career and unsure about the next step.

For those of you who are new to me and my work, BE THE FIRST is my signature career progression programme designed specifically to support mid to senior level black lawyers to fulfil their potential within the industry and navigate the black experience all the way to the top. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you're ready to progress to the next level - whether that's a promotion to partnership or GC - this is the programme for you. Click here to find out more.

The question of whether to go for partnership came up in BE THE FIRST earlier this week when, during our month-end Progression Review, one of my clients announced to the group: "I am certain I want partnership and I am 100% sure it's in my control to do it my way"

This would be an amazing show of confidence and certainty from anyone. The fact that it came from a client who, just 3 months earlier, was leaning towards NOT being partner because of who she believed she'd have to be and the sacrifices she thought she'd have to make, is astounding.

This was such a transformation (and one that has occurred many times in BE THE FIRST) that I had to share it with you to show you that it's available for you too.

Helping my client make this shift from feeling swept along by her career and by other people's expectations of her, to feeling that partnership is something she is choosing and is fully in control of, was simple.

I coached her on her track record in her career and showed her how being authentic had in fact been her winning strategy. From there she was able to see that not only was being authentic and leading her way going to be possible, it was also the thing that was most likely to help her get there. (In BE THE FIRST we pay serious attention to understanding what's working and what you need to keep doing to progress).

I then coached her on her confidence in her value, and how being authentic would bring more of that to the table.

Lastly i coached her on her relationship to her career. I showed her that if her career was a train, it wasn't something that could ever run away from our out of control of her, because she was the driver. At any given moment, she gets to decide how fast it goes and the direction it will take.

As a result of what coaching helped her see and understand about her success to date, my client starting feeling and showing up more confidently than ever before, adding value like never before - all by doing it her way.

If you've been struggling with the idea that you'd have to be someone you're not to become partner, this video will calm your fears and give you the confidence to go for partnership as who you are.

Questions about progressing to partnership? Let's chat. Book a call with me and let's talk about what authentic partnership means to you and how I can help you create it. Book here https://calendly.com/carolineflanagan/bethefirst

You know you need to speak up in meetings. You know it's an opportunity to showcase your value, be visible and to advocate for yourself, your team and that important project you are championing. It also happens to be the one piece of feedback you're given over and over again.

The problem is you hate it. You feel so anxious and stressed at the thought of it. You dread it in the days leading up to it and suffer your way through to the end of it.

So instead of contributing you stay silent. You withdraw, make yourself small. You disengage and disconnect which makes it impossible to listen and that in turn makes it even harder to contribute anything of value.

The worst bit? How you beat yourself up after the meeting for not having said anything at all.

This is exactly the scenario I coached my clients on in today's BE THE FIRST Coaching session so in this session I want to share how I helped her solve it.

Here's what you'll learn

  1. The value of speaking up in meetings and why it's an essential career skill
  2. The importance of solving for not speaking up vs. waiting for the circumstances (how meetings are run; the culture and expectations in meetings) to change
  3. The way you are showing up to meetings outside work when you feel safe and valued is a superpower you can use in the workplace
  4. The importance of processing the discomfort and negative emotions you feel when you think about speaking up in meetings
  5. How to create your own safety so you become the person who can walk into any room and speak to anyone.

Struggling with speaking up in meetings? Share in the comments.

P.S. In BE THE FIRST I teach you how to speak up in meetings as a way of increasing your visibility and showing them how valuable you are so you can progress to the next level. Adapting the day should only take you a few minutes and can be done at the beginning of the day before you get to work. Resist the temptation to launch into fire fighting mode. Even fire fighters have a plan and know what they will do first and what to tackle next!

Together with planning the week, adapting the plan is a skill you can learn that you'll keep benefitting year after year. Building these skills will :

  • give you more control over your work

  • more time for the other things that matter

  • increased capacity for your other work and for the demands you'll face at the next level

  • and, because you're calm, in control and are better at managing your time, it will make you so much more valuable as a lawyer.

P.S. In BE THE FIRST I teach you Time Control - a set of skills that give you control over your time so you feel more in control, avoid overwhelm, have the capacity to grow to the next level and have more time for the other things that matter. If you're a mid to senior black lawyer and you want any of this, BE THE FIRST Progression for Black Lawyers is the coaching programmae you want to be in. Hello and Happy New Year! It's great to be back!

Today I'm talking about setting your intention for 2025 so you create all the results you want this year.

This isn't about setting new year's resolutions. It's about the thoughts BEHIND your new year's resolutions that are the difference between you giving up on your shiny new gym membership 3 weeks into January, and sustaining your new commitment to health and fitness for the entire year. Big difference!

I had a rocky start to the year in that, unusually for me, I went into it thinking "I don't know what I want this year" and "What if I fail" (and a whole host of other fears). But thanks to the coaching tools I have (and which I teach you inside BE THE FIRST and CONFIDENT Black Lawyers) I can catch these thoughts and redirect my brain to thinking more intentionally and powerfully so that 2025 is everything I want it to be.

Have you set your intention for the year? What results do you want to create for yourself in 2025? How will you keep going with your resolutions this year? I answer all these questions and more in today's recording.

Happy New Year and happy listening.

The better you are at managing overwhelm the more in control you will feel and the better you'll perform.

This session is part 2 (Plan the week) of a 4 part series to help you manage overwhelm at one of the busiest times of the year (and any other time you need to).

In it I teach you one of the simplest and most effective tools for managing your time so you stop feeling overwhelmed and so your experience of being a lawyer - and other people's experience of working with you - is a better one. Here's what we cover:

  1. The no. 1 mistake I see lawyers making in how they think about controlling time
  2. How to spot when you're descending into overwhelm (the earlier you spot it, the easier it is to prevent or stop it)
  3. How planning the week affects not just your ability to manage overwhelm but also improves your prospects for promotion
  4. A step by step guide to planning your week so the important things get done and you find time for the other things that matter.

P.S. In BE THE FIRST Progression for Black Lawyers I teach you Time Control where you learn how to take control of your time so you can perform to your potential and so your progression is both measurable and sustainable. If you're a mid to senior black lawyer and you're ready to progress to the next level, this is the programme you want to join. Book a free consult with me to find out whether BE THE FIRST is for you. Feeling overwhelmed? You're not alone. Almost everyone I've spoken to these past few weeks (clients included) has commented on the alarming speed with which time is passing and how little control they feel they have over it.

Nobody said lawyering would be easy.

But there are times when even the most efficient and resilient struggle under the weight of the pressure to deliver and the relentless seemingly endless demands being made of them. The last quarter of the year / the festive season / countdown to year end combo - this is one of those times.

It's hard not to feel overwhelmed. To think there's too much to do in too little time and you've got nothing left to give. You may even be questioning your career choices and whether this is something you want long term.

If this is you, you're in the right place.

This week is the first in a 4-part Overwhelm Series I'm bringing you to support you through one of the most challenging times of the year (even if it's also one of the most festive and fun).

In this episode I share a simple process for getting out of the crisis of overwhelm - when you've reached your limit and you've got nothing left to give - and into the feeling that time is yours and you get to be in charge of it. Here's what I cover:

  1. How you know you're experiencing an overwhelm crisis and what it feels like in your body
  2. How your thoughts about time make it harder to manage your time
  3. The simple mindset shift that will change how you feel and give you authority over your to do list
  4. The 4 easy steps you can take right now to get out of overwhelm today

Happy listening

P.S. In BE THE FIRST you learn Time Control, a toolkit of time management strategies that support you to perform well, deliver on time and find more time for the things that matter outside work. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and the fear of overwhelm is the reason you're not progressing your career, book a free consult with me and let's talk about how I can help.

You are capable of anything you set your mind to.

The more you believe this is true the more confident you will be in who you are. The more confident you are the easier it will be to navigate the challenges of being black in a white world, the further you will go in your career and the more fulfilling it will be to get there.

Right now "I am capable of anything I set my mind to" is not the thought your brain offers you on a typical day! It's more like "I'm a fraud" "my success is down to luck" and "I'm going to be exposed" (Classic Imposter Syndrome) or, "I'm the only one" "I can't be myself" "Places like this don't want people like me" (Environmental Imposter Syndrome).

The problem with these thoughts is they feel terrible.

They make you feel anxious and stressed and that you're not enough, which drives you to overwork and overthink in a way that holds you back in your career. The result? Lawyering feels hard and overwhelming, you either don't progress or you get left behind and your confidence never grows.

In episode 65 of Legal Imposters I give you a simple and powerful solution to all of this: believe you are capable of anything you set your mind to, and let this thought drive how you feel and how you show up to your day.

This will challenge you at first.

But that's only because you've forgotten who you are. The moment you take the steps to remember not only will you recognise this as true, you'll realise you've know it all along. You'll connect to the person inside of you who is capable of anything and this will give you the confidence to succeed.

I talk you through all of this and the steps you can take to get started, in episode 65 of Legal Imposters. Here's what I cover:

  • how your thoughts create your results
  • thinking on purpose
  • the value of believing you are capable of anything
  • how to get started today

P.S. If you're a black lawyer and you're tired of self doubt holding you back in your career, join CONFIDENT Black Lawyers, the new online confidence building programme for black lawyers at every stage of their career, where I give you a proven process and a practical tool for overcoming Imposter Syndrome so you have the confidence to succeed in a white world.

When you have confidence in who you are, your whole experience of being a black lawyer is going to change.

You won't just know you're capable of anything you set your mind to. You're going to believe it enough to keep overcoming Imposter Syndrome and perform to your potential.

You're going to stop thinking of yourself as the only one and start believing you're the first.

You're going to stop being in your head so much and start being more present, making it easier for you to get started on the task and just get it done.

You're going to stop second guessing yourself and worrying you'll get it wrong. Instead you'll make decisions thoughtfully and easily and, no matter the outcome, you will always have your own back.

But the best thing about being confident in who you are is how you'll feel about being a black lawyer in a white world -

Instead of feeling powerless and that your life and your career are things that happen to you, you are going to feel so POWERFUL. You're going to feel you have so much CONTROL. You're going to FEEL LIKE YOURSELF again. And you will know, and believe it at your core, that the circumstances you find yourself in will never be big enough to stop you.

In this episode of the Legal Imposters Podcast I talk about what it means to have confidence in who you are and all the ways your life will be transformed when you have it.

I cover:

  1. The difference between confidence in what you do and confidence in who you are (and why you should focus on the latter)
  2. What it means to have confidence in who you are
  3. The 5 step process that helps you build it; and
  4. The difference it will make when you have it.

All of this is available to you and you can start having it the minute you begin building confidence in who you are.

To get started on your confidence journey, come to my live webinar on Friday 15th November 2024 at 1pm UK: How To Be Confident.

If you're a black lawyer, the chances are you have Imposter Syndrome or will experience it at some point in your career. Because for you Imposter Syndrome is different. It's not just internal. It's environmental.

So even if you know you deserve to be here and remember how hard you worked to get here, there a good chance Imposter Syndrome is showing up in your career and holding you back as we speak.

It is showing up in how you feel - isolated, alone, not enough, other than

It is showing up in how you work - overworking, overthinking, playing small, self sabotage

And it is showing up in the results you have in your career right now - feeling undervalued; being left behind, not getting the recognition you deserve, feeling constantly overwhelmed and stressed.

However Imposter Syndrome is showing up for you and whatever the cause, there's a way to overcome it so that instead of holding you back it gives you the confidence to succeed:

All you have to do is, Remember who you are

This is it. This is the answer to overcoming Imposter Syndrome that you've been searching for. It's as powerful as it is simple. And it's the only answer you'll ever need.

When you Remember who you are you connect to the version of you that is capable of anything you set your mind to. This gives you confidence in who you are and empowers you to get to work. And every result you create from that place just increases your confidence further. This is how confidence is built. This is how you succeed.

This session is a masterclass on Imposter Syndrome. In it I teach you everything you need to know about Imposter Syndrome and the only thing you need to do to answer it PLUS I offer you an irresistible way to take this understanding and make it work for you in the real world: CONFIDENT Black Lawyers.

Every senior black lawyer will tell you: if you want to progress in a white world, you must have a sponsor - someone invested in you, willing to advocate for you, champion you, mention you in rooms you don't have access too, positively influence the views of those who don't know you.But winning a sponsor isn't always easy. For many it happens by chance. For most it doesn't happen at all. So what do you do when you want to progress your career but you can't find the sponsor to support you? The answer is, sponsor yourself. That's right. YOU be the one to put yourself in rooms you don't have access to and to win opportunities that wouldn't otherwise go to you. This isn't as hard as it sounds. All you have to do to sponsor yourself is to proactively progress your career. That's it. Just decide you are going to progress to your goal and follow a proven strategy that will get you there. In this session I outline what that strategy is and show you how following even just one of those steps is going to not only create forward momentum in your career, it's also going to invite an endless flow of micro acts of sponsorship and attract that sponsor that you so eagerly await. Here are the 6 steps to take to proactively progress your career:

  1. Get clear on the goal
  2. Implement feedback
  3. Build your brand
  4. Build relationships with people different to you
  5. Be visible
  6. Showcase your value

All of this I teach you in BE THE FIRST Progression for black lawyers. We work together to help you choose the right goal. I teach you the Feedback Formula, Intentional Brand Curation, Relate-Agility, High Visibility and the Value Equation - unique tools and concepts designed to progress your career in a way that is both measurable and sustainable. Imposter Syndrome is different for people of colour. It's not just internal. It's environmental.

You know about regular Imposter Syndrome - the one where you think you're a fraud, tell yourself your success is down to luck and think that any minute now you're going to be exposed - but do you know about environmental Imposter Syndrome and are you aware of how it's holding you back?

In this episode I explain how Imposters syndrome can hold you back as a black lawyer, even when you don't think you're a fraud. I introduce you to the concept of "environmental imposter syndrome" the feeling that your an imposter that results from working in a firm or organisation that is neither diverse nor inclusive and / or where you're subjected to racism or feel you can't be your true self.

Here's what you'll learn:

  1. What environmental Imposter Syndrome is and how it is different and yet the same as regular Imposter Syndrome
  2. The 4 different levels that we experience any form of Imposter Syndrome
  3. What you are doing or avoiding doing right now which shows Imposter Syndrome is holding you back
  4. The simple solution to your Imposter Syndrome and how you know it will work
  5. What to expect when you got to implement the solution plus how joining CONFIDENT BLACK LAWYERS, my upcoming programme will solve your Imposter Syndrome and give you the confidence you need to succeed in a white world.

You're good at what you do. So why don't you feel it? Why does your confidence lag so far behind your accomplishments?

Knowing you're a good lawyer is one thing. But having the confidence not to overwork or second guess yourself, to speak up in meetings and to seize opportunities before you're 100% ready - this is something else entirely and it requires confidence in who you are.

As a black lawyer striving to succeed in a white world, you spend a lot of time either thinking you're an imposter or being made to feel like one. But whether your Imposter Syndrome comes from telling yourself your success is down to luck and that you're going to be exposed, or from the public school banter and bonding over what your white colleagues did over the weekend, the effect is the same: you lack confidence in who you are in the moments you need it most and this stops you performing to your potential.

If this is you, you're in the right place. I'm here to help you change that.

In this episode I tell you exactly what to do when you want to speak up more in meetings but keep telling yourself "I don't know enough" or "I'm not articulate enough".

I explain the difference between internal and external Imposter Syndrome and give examples of some of the ways Imposter Syndrome is holding you back right now.

I talk about the gap between "knowing" you're great at what you do and "believing" it enough to be visible, showcase your value and build relationships with people different to you.

Last but not least, I introduce you to Confident Black Lawyers, my new online programme for lawyers at every level that builds confidence in who you are and gives you a practical tool for connecting to that confidence everytime you need it.

If you're a black lawyer - practicing or aspiring - and you want the confidence to succeed in this industry, Confident Black Lawyers - coming soon - is for you.

Should I stay or should I go?

Should I go for partnership or should I stay where I am?

These are just some of the questions you've been asking yourself for months, maybe even years now, that are keeping you stuck in the Confusion Stage.

The Confusion Stage

The Confusion Stage is the stage in your career where you've stopped moving forward and are just treading water stuck in indecision over where you should go next in your career.

Going through the motions

I see alot of you getting stuck at this stage and allowing too much time to go by before you make a decision. So you spend alot of time going through the motions of your day job feeling restless and unmotivated, confused and disengaged. Not challenging yourself, not being proactive and with no focus or direction. The result is that the months and years go by and you are left with what I call the pain of unfulfilled potential - that inner knowing that you are capable of more that is crying out to be heard.

A simple choice

If this is you, you're in the right place. In this session I explain how the decision about which direction to go in your career is a really simple one: stand still or keep growing. And the decision I encourage you to make every single time is growth. You've got to choose growth!

Choose growth

Choosing growth means looking at the choices in front of you and finding the one that will require the most learning and development from you. It's the option you're most afraid of. It's the one that triggers your Imposter Syndrome. The one that creates the most discomfort. That's the option you want to go for.

Who you become along the way

Choosing growth isn't just about the goal and how your life will be different when you get there (bigger salary,, more status, more independence for example). It's about who you become along the way - the skills you will uplevel the new tools you'll acquire and everything I teach you that will ensure you don't just progress to the next level, you also thrive at that level.

You will have everything you need to keep progressing, all the way to the top.

Mid to senior black lawyer?

If you're a mid to senior black lawyer and you have been stuck in the Confusion Stage unsure about where to go next in your legal career, I can help you with that. Book a free consult call with me and I'll help you make the best decision for your growth, your potential and the longevity of your career.

When someone tells you you're "not like normal black people"; when they note with surprise "you're very articulate" or comment on how well spoken you are or well put together you are - it's a micro-aggression rooted in negative racial stereotypes that is hurtful and offensive.

But don't let micro-aggressions like this wound you and undermine you. Take control of the narrative and use them to empower you.

"You're not like normal black people" doesn't diminish you. It doesn't condemn you to play small.

It doesn't mean you're the only one.

It proves you're the first.

Tune in to discover how to make this micro-aggression empower you.

P.S. If you're a mid to senior level black lawyer and you want to progress within the industry, BE THE FIRST is the room you want to be in. You know the one thing that's better than achieving your goal?

Transcending it!

When you join Be The First the promise is you either achieve your goal or you transcend it

How do I make such a promise? And what does transcending your goal mean?

One of the biggest reasons people hesitate to sign up with a coach is their fear that the coaching won't work for them and they won't get results.

Not in Be The First.

In the very first session we agree your 6 month goal and we lock it in as a clear objective for your coaching.

This means you know exactly what you're working towards, whether you're still on track and what that goal will look and feel like when you get there.

And there's more.

In Be The First I don't just give you the strategy for achieving your goal, I coach you on everything that comes up along the way - imposter syndrome and any other type of self doubt, overwhelm, not enough time, fear of being exposed, not knowing the answer, risk of burnout, a difficult relationship with a tricky boss, not being taken seriously ...

You experience it, I coach you on it.

This means that on the way to achieving your goal you are:

  • developing a life long skillset and toolkit for navigating your career as a black lawyer;
  • growing your self concept as a lawyer at a higher level
  • taking ownership and control of your life as a whole
  • inspiring your children to believe in what's possible for them
  • being a role model to and blazing a trail for your community
  • being the change you and I both want to see in this industry

When you join Be The First it's not just the goal that counts. It's everything you learn and who you become along the way that sets you up for success in a white world.

Tune in to Episode# 56: Transcending Your Goal now.

You’ve heard about my Be The First Progression for Black Lawyers.

You’ve learned how this coaching program will get you to your progression goal, supporting you all the way to the top.

You envision how my distinctive coaching skills and the unique tools that I teach can help you climb the progression ladder.

You're thinking about joining, but you ask yourself,

"What will the coaching look like? What exactly am I signing up to?"

Coaching is often misunderstood, so in the latest episode of The Legal Imposters Podcast, I break it down into a simple framework I call The Coaching Triad. 🎙️

You see, coaching isn’t just chatting; it’s a structured process that involves:

🧠 Asking Questions: Thought-provoking questions that reveal deeper insights.

💬 Responding: Engaging with those questions to explore your thoughts and feelings.

👂 Active Listening: I turn down the volume on my own thoughts to fully focus on you. This ensures you feel heard and understood, creating a supportive environment for your growth.

For our conversation to be considered coaching, it must include all three elements of the coaching triad simultaneously. If any part is missing, it’s just a regular conversation between us.

In this episode, I also touch on how reflection is a crucial part of my coaching process. By reflecting back what you share, I help you recognize patterns and opportunities you may have overlooked.

This reflective practice extends to the overall Be The First Program, where you will be encouraged to acknowledge your progress regularly to help reinforce motivation and build up your confidence.

After listening to this episode, there will be no confusion.

No uncertainty.

There won’t be any doubt in your mind whether coaching is a worthwhile investment for you.

Because it is, and you’re taking your first steps toward your most valuable investment.

If you're a mid-to-senior level black lawyer seeking personalized coaching and support, book a consultation with me today and start your career progression!

You know what you need to do to progress, so why are you still getting stuck?

You have a progression goal, so why aren't you advancing as quickly as you'd like or thought you would.

You have put yourself out there and attended training programs and conferences, only to return to your desks and struggle to implement what you’ve learned.

There’s a huge chasm between you and your goal, with no path in sight.

This disconnect can lead to feelings of self-doubt. It can even worsen your imposter syndrome, especially in environments where we may feel isolated or underrepresented.

In Episode 50 of The Legal Imposters Podcast, I'll introduce you to the Progression Pathway, a 7-stage model I've created to help you understand why you might not be advancing as quickly as you'd like and, more importantly, what you can do to change that.

This model outlines seven essential stages for achieving your career goals.

The Seven Stages of the Progression Pathway:

1️⃣ Decide Your Goal: Define a clear, specific, and measurable career goal.

2️⃣ Understand the Pathway: Create a personalized plan outlining the necessary steps and milestones.

3️⃣ Learn the Skills: Develop core competencies crucial for your career progression.

4️⃣ Implement the Skills: Apply what you've learned in real-world scenarios, even when faced with challenges.

5️⃣ Get Coached: Seek support and guidance to navigate obstacles and reframe negative thoughts.

6️⃣ Keep Going: Maintain momentum and resilience, evaluating your progress and making adjustments as needed.

7️⃣ Achieve Your Goal: Celebrate your achievements and set new goals for continuous growth.

I’ll also touch on how seeking support through the Be The First Progression programme will help you overcome the unique barriers that black lawyers face so you can follow the Progression Pathway, all the way to the top.

Remember, the path to success isn't always a straight line, but with the Progression Pathway as your roadmap, you'll be navigating those unique challenges like a pro.

If you're a mid-to-senior level black lawyer and you're ready to step onto the Progression Pathway and achieve your goals, I can help you with that. Book a free consult with me and let's talk about how Be The First will help you get there. Click the link below to book:

Are you feeling directionless in your legal career?

Do you feel like you're just going through the motions day after day?

Bored. Unchallenged. Stuck.

Without a clear progression goal, your career can feel like it’s happening to you rather than being something you actively build. 🚧

In this episode of The Legal Imposters Podcast, I share how you can take control of your career by establishing a regular goal-setting habit that is both challenging and achievable.

I also share how setting a new progression goal every six months keeps your career moving forward by:

⏰ Creating Urgency: Six months is long enough to make meaningful progress but short enough to create a sense of urgency. If the goal were set for a year, procrastination might creep in. A six-month goal pushes you to take action without procrastination.

🌱 Producing Sustainable Progress: A six-month period allows for sustainable progress. It gives you the time to implement changes without burning out or feeling overwhelmed.

🎉 Helping You Enjoy the Process: Career progression is not just about reaching a destination; it’s about enjoying the journey and growing along the way.

As you set your progression goals, consider joining a program or community that can provide accountability and support. If you’re a mid to senior level black lawyer eager to progress, Be The First Progression for Black Lawyers is the room you want to join. In addition to being coached by Caroline, you'll get:

✅ Steady Support: Encouragement from peers.

✅ Consistent Goals: Regular goal-setting habits.

✅ Shared Experiences: Learning from others’ journeys.

It’s time to sit in the driver’s seat of your career.

Hold the steering wheel.

Ready,

Set,

Goal! 🚀

Are you letting your career dreams gather dust on the shelf of "someday"?

Do you feel a nagging sense of dissatisfaction with where you are professionally, but find yourself constantly putting off the actions needed to change it?

You have a vision of where you want to be, but too often, it remains just out of reach, shrouded in excuses, inaction, and waiting for the “perfect” moment.

Let's face it—waiting around won't bring you closer to success.

To help you overcome procrastination and get started on your career progression goals, I share with you a Three-Step Approach designed to make the process manageable and less overwhelming:

🧠 Step 1: Become Aware of the Reasons for Procrastination

Understanding why you procrastinate is the first step towards overcoming it.

📝 Step 2: Identify the First Step Towards the Goal

Once you're aware of why you're procrastinating, the next step is to identify a small, manageable action you can take. Divide the task into smaller, more manageable parts.\

🚶‍♀️Step 3: Take That First Step

Now that you've identified the first step, it's time to take action. This is often the hardest part, but it's crucial for building momentum.

Throughout the episode, I also challenged you to confront the illusion of "no deadlines" that often surrounds career goals. Unlike time-bound tasks, our career goals often lack those external pressures, making it easy to slip into a cycle of endless deferral.

It’s time to break that cycle.

And the time to act is now.

Your dream career is calling, and it's time to answer. 📞✨

PS. I have an easy first step for you! Join my free masterclass next Monday, July 8th entitled How To Progress Your Career When You're The Only One. Have you ever walked into a meeting and felt a sudden wave of self-consciousness?

You scan the room, and it hits you - you're the only person of color, the only one from a different background.

There are a few people who look like you at work, but even with a handful of others, it can still feel isolating. Your journeys to get where you are today are completely different. You went to different schools, had different upbringings, and culturally, you just don't connect on the same level as your colleagues.

This feeling of "otherness" is real, and it’s incredibly isolating.

It wears you down, even if you're not consciously aware of it.

But here's the thing: you are not alone.

Throughout my career, I've seen firsthand the struggles black professionals face. I've also seen the incredible strength and determination it takes to overcome them and I'm on a mission to help you learn it. 💪🏽

Welcome to Racial Resilience: the ability to navigate those very real challenges, the microaggressions, the feeling of being constantly "othered", and still keep moving towards your goals.

In this episode, I share with you how you can:

➡️ Understand the impact of being the only black person in a professional setting.

➡️ Address feelings of exclusion and encountering racism or microaggressions.

➡️ Harness the transformative power of racial resilience.

By internalizing these principles, you don't just survive – you thrive. 🌱

Because after you develop your Racial Resilience, you won't ever get caught up in the absence of diversity.

You’ll start to focus on being the change you want to see.

PS. In Be The First Progression for Black Lawyers, I’ll discuss how you can build Racial Resilience and progress in your career. If you're a mid to senior-level black lawyer, I invite you to join. Do you crumple in the face of negative feedback?

Instead of seeing negative feedback as a gift for growth, you see it as a personal attack on your abilities.

You blame the person who gave you the feedback.

And worse, you dwell on old negative feedback and still get upset when you think about it. 😤

Stop resisting.

Feedback isn't your enemy, It's a roadmap to improvement.

In this episode, I teach you how you can receive negative feedback effectively by:

🌟 Never making it about you: The feedback is not about you as a person, it's about a specific piece of work or behaviour.

💖 Processing your emotions: Allow yourself to feel the initial discomfort so you can move on and focus on what you can learn. Don't let your emotions cloud your judgment.

🔍 Taking a closer look: Look at the feedback objectively and identify the areas where you can improve. Is there a grain of truth in it? Then reframe it as a chance to learn and grow.

🚀 Taking action: Decide what you will keep doing and what you will change based on the feedback. Don't just listen to feedback, implement it!

Remember: Negative feedback is a gift, not a curse.

Be willing to unwrap it so you can learn from it.

P.S. In Be The First Progression for Black Lawyers, I'll guide you through a proven process for receiving and implementing feedback effectively. If you're a mid to senior-level black lawyer and you want to progress, I invite you to join. Enrollment for the September class opens in July! Places are limited so make sure you're ready. Are you constantly remembering that you need to do more business development to build your business case for partnership, but you don't actually do it?

You know that you need and should be building your business case and meeting new clients.

But you’re so busy doing everything else, that you never find the time.

And so there's this mounting pressure as the deadline for presenting your business case looms, keeping you on edge because it's yet another thing you know you should be doing but you’re not getting done.

If you’re all too familiar with this feeling, then I have two words for you:

Designate and delegate.

In the latest episode of The Legal Imposters Podcast, I share how designating one day a week for business development activities and then delegating the administrative task of booking time in the diary with clients will help you:

➡️ Eliminate indecision: By choosing a specific day, you remove the daily decision-making process about when to engage in business development.

➡️ Create routines: Making it a routine part of your schedule helps in building consistency and respect for this dedicated time.

➡️ Increase efficiency: By delegating tasks like scheduling meetings and reaching out to potential clients, you can focus on high-impact activities.

➡️ Streamline processes: Clear instructions to your assistant can help streamline the scheduling and follow-up processes.

Remember: The key is to take action now and stay consistent.

Open your calendar today, choose your business development day, and start delegating tasks. 📅

No more putting it off—now is the time.

Just because the opportunity in front of you is a good one, doesn't mean you should say no to it!

I know this sounds counter-intuitive. Why would I NOT accept a good opportunity? I hear you ask. The answer: when the opportunity in question is going to either distract you from your progression goal or spread you so thinly that you don't have the time, capacity or band width to move towards it.

In Be The First Progression for Black Lawyers we are all back in the coaching room after April's Consolidation Month - a time when we pause the formal coaching sessions and you are encouraged to fly solo towards your progression goal, drawing on the tools and strategies I have been teaching and coaching you on in the previous 12 weeks. This is a great way to reveal the obstacles that are holding you back from progressing towards your goal so that we can work on them on your return to the coaching sessions and get you back on track to your goal.

"I want to be a better manager and leader than the Partner who lead me" is not a way to lead.

It's a style of leadership which will leave you people pleasing and over sheltering your team in a way that serves neither them nor you.

In this podcast I talk about the leadership and management styles you're adopting by default which are creating results you don't want in your career. Results like:

  • avoiding giving feedback
  • holding back from delegating
  • not setting boundaries
  • being contactable at all hours
  • taking your team out of ownership

I share the example of one of my clients in Be The First Coaching whose leadership style left her feeling exhausted, frustrated and resentful and I walk you through how I helped her fix it.

P.S. If you're a black lawyer feeling frustrated and resentful about how much you are doing on your own, I want to invite you to join Be The First Coaching for Black Lawyers. Enrolment for the next cohort is coming. Places are limited. Join the waiting list and be the first to know when it opens.

Which emotions are you willing to feel in order to achieve your goal?

In this episode:

  • why making progress towards your goal depends on your feelings as well as your actions
  • how imagining the worst case scenario for your feelings can help you achieve your goal
  • the no.1 question you need to consider when planning your next step
  • The negative emotions you've been avoiding and why you need to feel them

The one bit of feedback you choose to ignore could be the reason you don't get promoted this year.

It can be hard to receive feedback, especially when that feedback is negative, or something we don't agree with, or it comes from someone we neither like or respect.

But receiving and implementing feedback is necessary for your growth and integral to your progress.

In this episode I explain why dismissing feedback is a form of self sabotage that could be the one thing that stops you progressing this year, and I give you a clear framework for receiving and implementing feedback so that you keep learning, keep growing and give them more and more reasons to promote you.

P.S. Receiving and implementing feedback is one of the skills I teach and coach you on in Be The First Coaching for Black Lawyers so you progress quickly and sustainably. Promotion isn't everything.

Sometimes, career progression is as simple as asking for help instead of doing it all yourself.

The workload is heavy and you have a boss who leaves everything for you to do.

You have a client who thinks they own you.

The emails keep piling up and you're constantly chasing the day.

You have children to organise and raise and be present for.

You have a partner to connect with. Friends to stay connected to.

And then there are the aging parents who need your support.

All of this sounds like a lot.

When you do everything yourself, it IS a lot.

In this episode I talk about building the muscle of asking for help so you can lawyer with more ease.

• How coaching works.

• The best conditions for coaching.

Adding value is important. It's what you’re paid for and it's how you attract opportunities.

But how do you add value when you question your right to be there or feel you have nothing to contribute?

Not having confidence in the value you bring is frustrating and unsettling. It keeps you stuck in your own head. It's why you're quiet in meetings. It's why you question your role, doubt yourself for the next promotion and even think about quitting. And when your brain is busy with all this, adding value just gets harder and harder.

You think the problem is not having anything to contribute.

But it's simply because you haven't stopped for long enough to recognise where you are and understand the value you bring.

So all you need to do to ADD value, is KNOW your value in the first place.

In Episode 23 of the Legal Imposters Podcast I show you how. I give you the simple steps to knowing your value and being able to contribute in every room.

If you struggle to add value to meetings or team discussions or worry that you don't have anything to contribute, this episode is for you.

P.S. If you're a black or minority ethnic lawyer and you're worried you're not contributing, let's talk. Book a free consultation with me now to discover how Be The First coaching can help. Click link to book into my calendar.

Do you struggle to find time for exercise? One of the common mistakes I see is not making your health and in particular exercise a priority.

I get it. Life is busy. Work is demanding. Sometimes exhausting. You work long hours. There aren’t enough hours left in the day. But this is no excuse to neglect your exercise routine and therefore be neglecting your health.

"Start small, build exercise into your daily routine and track your progress" says my PT of 8 years, Holly Aldridge, in this week's episode.

"Most people focus on the physical benefits of exercise, but the biggest reason to exercise is for your mental health" says Holly.

If you're constantly stressed and anxious at work or you're frustrated with your attempts to fit exercise into your routine, this episode's for you.

But what you'll get from this episode doesn't end there. As well as being a brilliant Personal Trainer, Holly is also a very ambitious and astute business owner. She shares her tips on networking, developing your personal brand and posting on social media which are going to help you in your quest to stand out from the crowd and be more visible.

About Holly Aldridge

Holly is a personal trainer, training people from their homes and outdoors. (She's the one that has me doing all those squats and burpees on a Monday afternnoon!). She has been running HA Personal Training for over 10 years and now specialises in working with women pre & post natal achieve their health & fitness goals. Thanks to her 10 years’ experience in the fitness industry she can successfully evaluate a client’s physical fitness, understand their needs and then develop a practical and achievable workout routine for them to reach their targets.

Holly prides herself on communicating well and earning trust. She has been passionate about fitness from a very young age, having wanted a PT business from the age of 14. Holly believes all women, mums in particular, can achieve any health and fitness goal they desire by creating healthy habits and understanding and educating themselves on how to train as a woman

"You don't have to like networking to be good at it " So says Charlie Lawson, the Unnatural Networker and my guest this week on the Legal Imposters Podcast. Tune in to find out: 1. Why I felt compelled to interview him on the podcast 2. What an unnatural networker is (and how many of you are out there) 3. Why you don't have to like networking to make it work for you 4. The right mindset for successful networking 5. A better conversation starter than "what do you do"? 6. Why networking is not about who's in the room. Mentioned in this episode: Books: The Unnatural Networker by Charlie Lawson The Unnatural Promoter by Charlie Lawson The Networking Test - click here to visit About Charlie Lawson Charlie Lawson is a very Unnatural Networker. Most experts talk about networking as though it is easy to talk to strangers. Charlie helps other Unnatural Networkers gain confidence by putting networking across from the point of view of someone who’d rather avoid it completely. In his spare time, he’ll mostly be found swimming / biking / running in triathlons, while keeping his fingers crossed that Spurs finish above Arsenal in the league.

Connection. You can’t build a relationship without it. With some people it’s just easy. You meet, you talk, you hit it off immediately. But if you want to get ahead in your legal career you can’t rely on the effortless connection you form with people who are just like you. You need to be able to connect with anyone. This isn’t always easy. When you meet someone who looks different to you, dresses differently, speaks differently, has a different background to you, is from a different culture .. is at a different level of seniority or even that they work in a different part of the firm, your brain may register this as a barrier and make you think connection isn’t possible. This isn’t true. It’s easy to build connection. You just need to know how. In episode 20 I bring you Building Connection. I give you the 3 steps that will draw people to you and make it easy for you to connect with them. But be warned! None of these steps will work if you allow your thoughts to get in the way. So because I want you to succeed at this, I also talk you through the 4 pitfalls you need to be aware of so you can get out of your own way and build the connections you need. In this episode: -The 3 steps to building connection with people who are different to you - How to remember names - How much time to spend talking about you (hint: not alot) - The 4 common thinking mistakes you make when networking which will stop you connecting with others Happy Listening P.S. Are you struggling to build the relationships that you need to progress your legal career? I will teach you how. Book a free consult with me HERE now. Lawyers only. Mentioned in this episode: Ralph Waldo Emerson — 'In my walks, every man I meet is my superior in some way, and in that I learn from him.'

In this episode, I introduce you to the concept of Intentional Networking and its role in building the relationships you need for career success. First I talk about the common hesitations and beliefs about networking that are either stopping you from networking altogether or mean the networking you are doing isn’t as effective as it should be. Then I give you the five parts of Intentional Networking that will ensure your networking efforts produce the best results. But before you head off and put this into practise you need to know what to expect! When the moment comes, watch out for the ways your brain will try to avoid discomfort - like giving you 10 reasons why you shouldn’t go to that event you planned. Or focusing on the lack of diversity in the room instead of getting what you came for. This awareness means you’ll be able to take what you’ve learned about Intentional Networking and use it to put yourself in more rooms, meet more people and build more of the relationships that will sustain you in your career. Happy listening. P.S. If you enjoy this episode please can you leave a review? I’d love your feedback and it makes it easier for others to find it.

This week on the podcast I talk about mentors and the role they play in helping you move forward in your life and/or career. Many people confuse a mentor with a sponsor, but they are not the same thing. In this podcast I tell you what a mentor is, how to find one and how to ensure you get the most out of your mentoring relationship.

Being visible is a core essential for career progression. • It’s how people get to know who you are • It’s how they get to experience your value • It’s how they learn to trust you enough to: - give you opportunities - recognise you - support you - promote you. But when you have Imposter Syndrome, your fear of being exposed means that visibility is the last thing you want. You’ll go to great lengths to avoid it, by: • Turning down opportunities to showcase your value • Not going for a promotion • Avoiding networking events • Avoiding public speaking • Being intimidated by social media.

Perhaps you only do one or a couple of the above. But the problem is that any of these behaviours can hold you back and stop you from realising your true potential.

In this episode, I describe my own personal struggle with Imposter Syndrome and visibility when it comes to raising my profile on social media. I explain how, like me, you need to identify WHAT you should do to raise your visibility, and, more importantly, HOW you should do it. I share with you the results of an exercise I teach in Imposter Syndrome coaching which helps you to embrace negative emotion in order to do the things that will make you visible.

You don’t have to make this journey alone. I teach you the process for becoming more visible in Imposter Syndrome Coaching for Lawyers, and I coach you every step of the way.

If you're a lawyer and you struggle with being visible, I can help you with that. Book your free consultation call with me via this link

You can’t short cut your way to confidence.

Faking it ‘til you make it may help you out when you need a quick fix, but it is not a long term strategy for building confidence.  It’s often one of the ‘tricks’ you’re advised to use to help you ’overcome’ your Imposter Syndrome - a mindset tactic that encourages you to do something you’re terrified or reluctant to do. It works on the premise that if you ‘pretend’ to be able to do something often enough, or for long enough, you grow the capability to actually do it.

Sounds good, right? The problem with faking it though is that your relationship with yourself doesn’t change. It gives you a mask to wear, it makes you well-practised - but you are still practising being someone you are not. The best way to ‘make it’ is by gaining confidence in who you really ARE.

In this episode, I cover all the downsides to the faking it approach and describe what you need to do instead. I explain how you need to put in the work to discover who you really are, and learn to take action from a place of trusting that you are enough. This is the method I teach in Imposter Syndrome Coaching. Enrolment for the next coaching programme is coming soon. Make sure you’re on the waitlist so that you’re the first to. know.

No matter how much you achieve, your confidence never grows. Why is that?

The problem isn't that you're not doing enough or achieving enough. It's that you're not internalising your success. One of the common mistakes I see lawyers making is discounting and discrediting the successes they are having on a daily and weekly basis. They are so focused on the big successes, that they neglect the small everyday wins that grow your self concept and build confidence in who you are. How you know this is you:

  • as soon as you achieve one success, you immediately set off in search of another - you keep your successes to yourself, so no-one ever hears about them - when you have a success, you look for and focus on the 'fail' lurking within it - you repeatedly say "I deserve to be here!" but it doesn't change how you feel - you graduate to a more senior level without any formal process, and tell yourself "it doesn't count" If this is you, then the first step to internalising your success is to celebrate your wins. In this episode I tell you exactly how to do this and what to expect along the way.

  • Flying by the seat of your pants.
  • Pulling it out of the bag at the last minute.
  • Fire fighting.
  • Hustling to get it done.

It may sound exciting to approach your day job in this way, and to take pride in being this person, but all you're really doing when you work like this is winging it. Winging it is not a sustainable strategy for success. It's just another form of overworking. Like labouring over emails, excessively checking your work and doing everything yourself (I cover these in episodes 11,12 and 13) - the result is that things take you longer than they should and/or you're spending too much time on the wrong things. This is bad news for your work life balance. It's terrible news for the long term sustainability of your career. In episode 14 of Legal Imposters I show you exactly how to change this. I give you the simple solution that will completely transform what you think is possible for you as a lawyer. You'll learn a new approach to working that will help you manage your workload no matter what comes in, feel calm and in control no matter what is happening around you, and create the time you need for the other things that matter. SAVE THE DATE: 16 March 2023 Stop Overworking is my new 6 month programme that has everything you need to stop overworking - putting better balance and a sustainable way of working completely within your control. Doors open 16.3.23.

You must delegate more.

If you’re doing everything yourself, this is a clear sign you’re overworking, which means work is taking longer than it should.

I can help you change this. This episode is Part 3 of the Stop Overworking series. In it I walk you through the steps to delegating more so you can get more done in less time, which means:

This is Better Balance.

Here's what you'll learn in this episode:

  1. How not delegating enough is holding you back 2. The straight forward solution to stop you doing it 3. The 4 simple steps that will get you there 4. How your Imposter Syndrome will try to stop you and what to do when it does 5. How delegating more will give you better balance, and the value of that for your life and career.

When someone tells you (or posts on social media) that Imposter Syndrome isn’t real. That it’s a patriarchal construct designed to manipulate you, it can leave you confused, uncertain and, worst of all, feeling more alone than ever.

But you are not alone.

I see you.

In this episode I talk about the very real and very powerful transformation that begins with having a name for that messy collection of feelings that can’t be explained away as everyday self doubt: Imposter Syndrome.

Having a name for these feelings is so important. It validates how you feel and shows you you’re not alone. Naming it allows you to gain some authority over it, which is the first step towards solving it.

  • If you’ve every felt like a fraud.
  • If you ever feel your success is down to luck
  • If you’ve ever been afraid that you’re going to be found out..

Know that this is Imposter Syndrome.

It feels real to you because Imposter Syndrome is real.

You are not alone in the experience of it.

And (thanks to Imposter Syndrome Coaching) you never have to be alone when you’re solving it.

Happy listening. P.S. Enrolment for Imposter Syndrome Coaching for Lawyers is coming soon. To join the waiting list visit https://carolineflanagan.com/imposter-syndrome-coaching/

So you want to get fit for 2023!

So you join a new gym or renew your old membership. You find a new form of exercise you’re convinced you’re going to love, or you sign up with a new fitness coach who you’ve been eager to try.

All of this seems like the right approach to achieving your fitness goal, but is it?

Let’s face it, the reason you’re not already as fit as you want to be or exercising as regularly as you’d like is NOT because you don’t have the right membership. Or because you haven’t found the right fitness coach.

It’s because you’re Overworking.

Overworking is a secret sign of Imposter Syndrome. It’s the work you do that adds little or no value because it’s driven by fear, and which means work takes you longer than it should. Perfectionism. Not delegating. Labouring over the simplest email. These are examples of Overworking and the reasons why you are not making time to exercise.

So if you’re serious about getting fit this year, don’t look to your gym membership or your choice of fitness coach, look at how you manage your time.

Managing your time is the key to achieving your fitness goals. It forces you to be more efficient (so you stop overworking), ensures you are putting your work out sessions in your calendar and it means that when the moment comes to don your work out gear and get out of the house, you feel safe and in control enough to step away from your work.

In this episode of the podcast I explain the importance of managing your time and I give you 3 strategies to help you do that in a way that will transform your productivity and make it easy for you to honour your commitment to getting fitter.

Why do you need to change the way you think about career progression goals?

  1. Many of you HAVE no career progression goals at all.

  2. You’re floating along

  3. You have no intention or direction
  4. Maybe it hasn’t occurred to you that you should.

  5. A lot of you have this idea that career progression is only about getting a promotion.

  6. Some of you do have a career progression goal, but it’s not the right one.

  7. You have a career progression goal, it’s the right one, but the way you’re chasing after that goal is going to make it unsustainable when you get there.

So you’re either

  • underestimating the IMPORTANCE of career progression and/or
  • you’re taking such a narrow a view of it, (I.e. that career progression = promotion) that you are missing out on the VALUE of other forms of career progression.

This means you are denying yourself the opportunity to create the results of:

  • Being in a better place in your career today than you were yesterday
  • Or at the end of this year than you were last year
  • And to have as your future goal: the ambition of being in a better place in your career at the end of 2023 than you are the beginning.

In this episode of Legal Imposters, we cover:

  • Why you should ALWAYS have a career progression goal.
  • Why it’s really important to make sure that your goal is the RIGHT goal.
  • How to choose the right goal by focusing on the 4 Pillars of Career Progression, the concept we teach in Imposter Syndrome Coaching.
  • What the 4 Pillars of Career Progression are and how to use them.

In my Imposter Syndrome Coaching programme, you do a Progression Audit to work out which of the 4 pillars needs the most immediate attention, and we spend 6 months progressing that pillar first. When you do the work to progress one pillar and this has a knock on effect of progressing the other pillars too.

You can get started RIGHT NOW with identifying your progression goal for the next 6 months. I’m giving you FREE ACCESS to the Progression Audit Form (the exact same one we use when you join in Imposter Syndrome Coaching) to everyone who joins my Waitlist. .

To access your audit now, join the Waitlist. Add your details there, and a link to the Progression Audit will be sent straight to your inbox.

And make a note! Enrolment for Imposter Syndrome Coaching opens on 6th December. So head over to the waitlist and get your Progression Audit. This is your opportunity to be ready for when doors open on enrolment.

So you think you have Imposter Syndrome. But why does it matter? Why should you care?

Because Imposter Syndrome is impacting your career, more than you realise.

It is often tempting to blame a lack of career progression on external factors; the legal industry, your firm, your boss or the culture. And of course, these all play a role in your experience. But as long as you are only focused on these external factors, the systemic issues, you are:

  • Overlooking your own role in creating the results you’re getting, and
  • Giving away your power or your ability to create different results for yourself.

In episode 4 of Legal Imposters, I explain how the results you are seeing in your career are actually caused by behaviours driven by Imposter Syndrome, and how, as long as you are waiting for external factors to change, you will keep on getting the same results.

This episode covers:

  • What the unwanted results of Imposter Syndrome are.
  • How Imposter Syndrome makes you show up to your job.
  • How to recognise whether this applies to you.

The good news is, once you understand what Imposter Syndrome is and how it is holding you back, you can get started on implementing a solution that will change all of this for you and the results you are getting in your career.

It’s vitally important to find out because:
