HBO’s The Last of Us Season 1 is a TV show created and directed by Craig Menzin and Neil Druckmann. But the video game The Last of Us Part 1 or PT 1, for me, was one of the biggest impacts on my life. Therefore with HBO turning my favorite story into a TV show, well, that’s scary.
Even though they brought in Neil Druckmann, the creative director of the original game The Last of us Part 1 and Craig Menzin, who brought us the masterpiece Chornobyl, there were some similarities AND some fascinating changes.
And we will see them with side by side comparisons. Such as on the Henry and Sam climax scene, we instead cut to Ellie. The Jackson confrontation where Joel says, “You’re not my daughter” to Ellie felt exactly the same.
We even do a side by side comparison on the ending of episode 9 where Ellie asks "swear to me everything you said about the fireflies is true" and Joel replies "I swear" And explore the controversial last of us hospital scene comparison with HBO and the game.
There is a massive tonal change with Joel and the hospital scene in the season finale episode 09, “Look for the light” And we wanted to know how that happened, so I asked Timothy Good and Emily Mendez to give us an editing breakdown.

It’s every filmmaker’s dream, $1,250,000 dollars to make the documentary you’ve always wanted. But Yes Theory said no. “Project Iceman” is a documentary about the man who completed an Iron Man Triathlon in the most dangerous place on earth, Antarctica. Even more impressively, this movie was funded entirely by the subscribers of the YouTube channel Yes Theory. We sat down with Ammar and his DP/Editor Victor. Why do filmmakers hate Youtube? James Cameron has hired someone immediately after watching their YouTube video. But if you’re posting your artsy film on YouTube, and working with YouTube’s “retention rules” doesn’t that mean you can’t make your film the way you intend? We honestly don’t know if YouTube is a good or bad place for new filmmakers, but we wanted to explore these ideas with Sven Pape. He has edited films that have been to Sundance and Cannes, but he is best known for his YouTube channel ThisGuyEdits. Sven is the rare content creator who has a foot both in the Youtube world and in the traditional film world. And so we wanted to have the conversation.
