All Gas, No Brakes Episode 22: Zane DeVilbiss
Start Duel in the Desert week off with a bang by joining All Gas, No Brakes host Scott Barglof
and his guest, XR Super Series Late Model, XR Super Series Karl Kustoms Stock Car, and
Modified racer, Zane DeVilbiss from Farmington, New Mexico as they discuss the
preparation, challenges, and rewards that come with racing three classes each night, what to
expect from the 100-lap, $25,000-to-win Stock Car Feature on Saturday, November 12 th , and
more!
On the topic of Zane’s Ironman-esque commitment to running three different class for three
nights, DeVilbiss is quick to point out that there are definite advantages. DeVilbiss points out
that so much track time each night helps in understanding which lines are running well, saying
“it happened to me last year, in the stock car A-Main, the qualifier, we won, and we jumped in
the Mod race … they didn’t know the bottom was as good as it was, so everyone kinda
jumped the cushion where everybody else had been running in the Mod race previously and I
knew the bottom was so good from our Stock Car race.”
When the conversation turns to Zane’s strategy for Saturday’s 100-lap XR Super Series Karl
Kustoms Stock Car Feature, DeVilbiss says “the time to go is coming out of turn 4 for the
checkered flag, that’s for sure!” Zane also walks Scott through the factors and conditions that
effect any strategy he may employ, including whether or not DeVilbiss will take tires during the
midway, red flag pit stop.
Be sure to listen to the full episode to hear Zane’s thoughts on the biggest difference between
racing a Super Late Model and racing a Stock Car or Modified and how Zane is preparing for
the physical demands of racing and maintaining three cars each night. Follow Zane DeVilbiss
on Facebook at facebook.com/DeVilbissRacingChassis . Then head over to raceXR.shop to

Columbia takes a timeout from celebrating his 64 th birthday to chat with host Scott Barglof in
advance of the Duel in the Desert taking place November 10 th through November 12 th from the
XR Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and streamed live on XR+ .
The conversation begin with Scott and Sir Lawrence discussing the social atmosphere in Las
Vegas that makes the Duel in the Desert such a special event. Sir Lawrence, a sucker for fine
dining, mentions that he likes to stay after the Duel in the Desert for a couple extra days to
enjoy Freemont Street and a meal fit for royalty.
The conversation then shifts to Sir Lawrence’s 2022 Bristol Dirt Nationals Modified
Championship, the night that Scott, himself, performed the Knighting Ceremony of Sir
Lawrence. The trophy that accompanied this Crown Jewel win is the only trophy Sir Lawrence
proudly displays in his home!

All Gas, No Brakes Episode 19:
All Gas, No Brakes host Scott Barglof is joined by XR Super Series Karl Kustoms Stock Car
driver, and fellow Iowan, Dustin Vis from Martelle, Iowa to discuss Vis’ successful 2022
season and the upcoming Duel in the Desert from the XR Las Vegas Dirt Track at Las Vegas
Motor Speedway taking place November 10 th – November 12 th with all of the action streamed
live on XR+ .
Vis begins the conversation by recounting his interesting beginning to the 2022 race season.
A season that began with a fresh, new everything. After his dismal 2021 season, Vis changed
every aspect of his race team, from chassis builder to hauler and everything in-between, only
to have the hauler engine give out on the way to the Bristol Dirt Nationals!
As Vis tells it, this mishap was a blessing in disguise as it got all of his bad luck out of the way
before he ever hit the track. With Vis managing to finish 2 nd , 1 st , and 1 st in the his qualifying
races at Bristol, followed by a trip to Victory Lane in the $5,000-to-win XR Super Series Karl
Kustoms Stock Car Feature, one would have to agree with Vis’ telling.
Heading into the Duel in the Desert, Vis expresses excitement as the half-mile, groomed clay
oval is the type of track Dustin likes to race. More importantly, however, the XR Las Vegas
Dirt Track is “the kind of track I know this car really likes” Vis says of his Iowa Air Barrier
sponsored, Midstate Machine Race Engine powered, Precision Performance Shocks
supported, Johnny Spaw Race Cars Stock Car.
Listen to the full episode to hear how Dustin balances a busy work schedule while staying
competitive on the track, bouncing back from a mid-season back injury, his strategy for the
100 lap, $25,000-to-win XR Super Series Karl Kustoms Stock Car Feature taking place on
Saturday, November 12 th , and much more! Then head over the Vis Racing Team Facebook
page to follow Dustin and his team throughout the Duel in the Desert and beyond.
All Gas, No Brakes Episode 18:
In this episode of All Gas, No Brakes, host Scott Barglof is joined by Mike Nuchols, Owner of
Warrior Race Cars and XR+ pit reporter, to discuss the Duel in the Desert from the XR Las
Vegas Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway taking place November 10 th – November 12 th ,
the droop rule, and more.
Scott and Mike begin by discussing the upcoming Duel in the Desert and what Mike is looking
forward to when when in Las Vegas. Turns out this is Mike’s first visit of any kind to Las
Vegas! Echoing the sentiment Barry Braun expressed in All Gas, No Brakes Episode 17,
Nuchols, like many fans who will attend the Duel in the Desert, is excited to experience all the
activities beyond the dirt track that Las Vegas has to offer.
The conversation then transitions to Mike’s work as the XR+ pit reporter. Other than the facial
hair maintenance necessary to be presentable on stream, Nuhcols’ really enjoys the
opportunity to educate viewers about the in’s-and-out’s of dirt track racing. Mike’s passion for
teaching is further highlighted when the Scott mentions “The Ultimate Dirt Late Model Setup
Session” Mike will be presenting at The Performance Racing Industry Trade Show on
Saturday, December 10 th , 2022. If you’re attend PRI this year, be sure to attend Mike's
session .
“Not having the droop rule at Kokomo was a good thing, because then at the end of the night
when they crossed the finish line we knew who the winner was. That’s it. Dead set.” says
Nuchols to conclude an interesting discussion you don’t want to miss about the droop rule.
“I think this is going to be the best race of the whole weekend, honestly” is how Nuchol’s
describes the XR Super Series Karl Kustoms Stock Cars $25,000-to-win, 100 lap Feature set
for Saturday, November 12 th . Give a listen to the full episode to hear Mike’s complete
thoughts on this grueling Stock Car race that is sure to steal the show! Catch all the action
from the XR Las Vegas Dirt Track live on XR+ .
All Gas, No Brakes Podcast Episode 17: Barry Braun Dueling In The Desert
All Gas, No Brakes host Scott Barglof is joined by Barry Braun, owner of XR Events, to
discuss all things Duel in the Desert taking place November 10th - 12th from the XR Las Vegas
Dirt Track featuring the XR Super Series Late Models, XR
Super Series Karl Kustoms Stock Cars, Modifieds, and Northern Sport Modifieds.
Scott and Barry begin by discussing 2020’s Duel in the Desert, which featured over 460 cars,
and the impact such a bloated entry list had on Braun and XR’s approach to running future
XR events. “You’re not doing your business justice by hanging your hat on back gate
promoting, whatsoever. Because you’re going to bleed your racers, number one. And number
two, you’re going to run average to, maybe, maybe, sometimes above-average events, if
you’re lucky” says Braun.
The discussion then turns to XR’s approach to sponsors, or lack thereof, and the positive
impact this has on the racing product. With Braun pointing out that there are thin margins for
success by following the same playbook as everyone else, saying “Just because it’s always
been done, doesn’t means it’s good business.”
Finally, Scott and Barry discuss the significance of the Triple-Double, XR Super Series’ driver
incentive program that rewards drivers for attending the Colossal 100, Kokomo Dirt Nationals,
and the Duel in the Desert by doubling any payout those drivers earn in the Duel in the Desert
Finale on November 12th . Bobby Pierce took advantage of the Triple-Double in 2021, coming
from the back of the field to win and cash in for a cool $100,000. Of which, Braun says “Bobby
Pierce cost me $50,000 and, you know what, that’s awesome.”
If you can’t make it out to the XR Las Vegas Dirt Track this year, tune into XR.plus to watch
Ricky Weiss, Ross Robinson, Kyle Strickler, Brendan Smith, Dalton Wilson, Jimmy Owens,
Shane Clanton, Tim McCreadie, Chris Madden, Jonathan Davenport, Jeff Smith, Brandon
Overton, and Max Blair take their shot at doubling the $25,000-to-win prize. “I’ll take those
guys and match them up, pound-for-pound, to all the touring series out there” says Braun,
with pride, of this loaded class of Triple-Double eligible drivers.

On today’s episode of All Gas, No Brakes, Kollin Hibdon joins Scott Barglof discussing the 25th Annual Duel in the Desert. Kollin started in the Modified ranks in 2019 and has shown nothing but success and more speed each year. At the young age of 19 he has a lot of triumphs to show.
From Pahrump, Nevada, Kollin looks at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway almost like a home track. Located 45 miles away, just over the hump, his parents reside. The Duel in the Desert is one of the only events his grandparents are able to make which means a lot to Kollin.
Scott asked about what it would mean to Kollin to pick up the victory at this year’s duel, “It would mean a whole lot to me. It’d be cool to get it done in front of the home crowd and all the people that get to come see me,” Kollin stated. “I think we learned a lot at the Workin’ Man and the Open Nationals and I think that’s going to play into our favor pretty good coming into the Duel here.”
Kollin has found momentous success after converging forces with U-Motors Race Team and the Arnesons based in Fargo, North Dakota. Tragically in early July a teammate of the U-Motors Race Team lost his life in an accident. Casey Arneson was a big influence on Kollin his first year in Fargo and raced side-by-side together. “He wouldn’t want us to sit around here and be sad and make a negative out of the situation,” Kollin said when asked about the difficulty of getting back in the car after the incident.
Kollin doesn’t have any solid plans for the future other than giving everything he has in the Modifieds, but would never turn down the opportunity to race a Late Model. Kollin has a bright future ahead of him and we all look forward to continuing to watch his progression.
Tom Berry, Jr. joins All Gas, No Brakes host Scott Barglof on today’s podcast. Tom will be making the trip to the 25th Annual Duel in the Desert November 10-12 in his Modified. Tom has been racing a Modified since 2010 and jumped into a Stock Car in 2021 and began his campaign in both cars.
Tom is based out of Des Moines, Iowa, and runs a Team Harris Auto Racing chassis. This won’t be the first time Tom has made the trip down to the desert in Las Vegas in hopes of winning the Modified gem.
“Have a good race car and a good pill draw, and keep the nose clean and do what we can to just be in the right position to make our moves and make our passes,” remarked Berry Jr. when asked what it would take to finally pick up the big Duel in the Desert win.
Tom has the confidence in his Modified program going into the 25th Annual Duel in the Desert, but he will also throw his hat in the ring with his Wollam-owned 11X Stock Car and the $25,000-to-win 100-lapper XRSS Karl Kustom Stock Car Championship.
After the Iowa Dirt Nationals Tom found himself tied 12th in XRSS Karl Kustoms Stock Car points so he decided to load up the Stock Car and make the attempt to increase his points and start in the top six or eight. “I’ve talked to Elijah Zevenbergen, Damon Murty, and I’ve talked to a lot of people and they truthfully are on sides with me where if you have a car starting 12th, or you know you might even be able to tail-back with 100 laps if the track is super racey,” says Tom. “But we just decided the Stock Car crew wanted a vacation; they haven’t really traveled much outside of Iowa since I started driving for them besides Batesville last year,” continued Tom. “So they kinda just wanted to start doing that, so we decided to bring the Stock Car out.”
Tom is excited about competing at the same time the XRSS Late Models roll into town and is cognizant of the first impression he makes while they’re around. His next racing goal is to find a Late Model ride in which to compete.
On this episode of All Gas, No Brakes, Scott Barglof visits with Mike Van Genderen about the enormity of undertaking track prep at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Mike Van Genderen calls Newton, Iowa, home. Not only is Mike a racer, but his son Rowdee is in his second year of Stock Car racing. Racing is a family business for the Van Genderens, but Mike’s main focus during the 25th Annual Duel in the Desert is The Dirt Business.
He has to “try to get that moisture down in the (waste material), and you’re just trying to turn the desert into a racing surface, which we have been pretty successful with the past few years,” Mike said, when asked about the biggest challenge to prepping the track.
Mike has made it his mission to turn the track into something great. He has studied it to see what it needs and has found it takes about two weeks to prep the surface to make it raceable. Mike has found the key to creating a surface which allows racing on the bottom and the top is to stay on top of track maintenance during race nights.
The track requires significantly more water than any regular track due to the high temperatures and the dry climate throughout the year. This repeated watering along with Mike’s key secret allow for the track to become a stellar surface.
What’s Mike’s plan for the $25,000-to-win XRSS Karl Kustoms Stock Car 100-lapper? He’ll tell you during episode 14!
On today’s episode of All Gas, No Brakes, Scott Barglof goes in depth with Modified ace Cody Thompson. Cody is in his second year of Modified racing after having unparalleled success in the Northern Sport Modified division.
Cody is from Sioux City, Iowa, and runs a Team Harris Auto Racing Chassis, racing for his own team under the Cody Thompson Racing banner. In 2019, Cody had 44 feature wins and picked up three track championships: US 30, Park Jefferson Speedway, and Buena Vista Raceway.
After a breakout season in the Northern Sport Modifieds, Cody made the move to Modifieds in 2021 where he not only captured the National Modified Rookie of the Year, but amassed 20 feature wins. His most memorable racing moment is erasing a 1.5 second lead during the 2019 Duel in the Desert and picking up the win by over five seconds, using patience to let the car come to him.
Cody made the trip to The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway earlier this year for the Workin’ Man Nationals. When asked about the track conditions from years past, he states how track prep guru Mike VanGenderen has made the track his baby and has turned around the surface to a smooth, slick track. Mike’s investment into the racer’s thoughts behind the track prep means a lot to Cody, because it shows the racer’s opinion and thoughts matter.
Cody has a lot of momentum moving into the 25th Annual Duel in the Desert from this season. To prepare, he tries to approach each race as “another race”. Using the practice night to go through his notes and compare, he uses that as a starting point to set up the car in hopes of continuing his successful season.
Harris Auto Racing has been a huge part of the success Cody has had during his racing career. The input Harris Auto Racing collects from its drivers is a huge benefit to the success of each of the drivers. “Not everyone is on the same stuff, everyone's a little bit different,” Thompson said. “That’s what’s nice is the race car reacts to all that, and that’s huge because not everyone is the same, or drives the same, and that’s what’s cool about these chassis.”

On the newest episode of All Gas No Brakes our host Scott Barglof previews the Duel in the Desert with announcer Chad Meyer.
Chad resides in Whittemore, Iowa, where he announces regularly at Kossuth County Speedway and Hancock County Speedway as well as announcing special events for tracks and broadcast companies. One event Chad never misses is the Duel in the Desert, which holds a special place in his heart.
While the XR Super Late Models haven’t been a regular class at the Duel in the past, Chad states that the best drivers in the country have shown up to take on the big half-mile. Adding such talent to an event that was already considered a crown jewel truly makes the Duel in the Desert a national event.
With a laugh, Chad says he is really excited, but also doesn’t know what to expect for the $25,000-to-win, 100 lap XR Super Series Karl Kustoms Stock Car feature. Chad recalls the exciting feature in 2021 between Zane DeVilbiss, Dallon Murty, Damon Murty and Jesse Sobbing, and the wild and exciting show they put on. There will be no surprise if the XRSS Karl Kustom Stock Cars steal the show.
Historically a Modified gem, the Duel in the Desert will continue to host a number of big hitters in the XR Modified division who have found success at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, as well as some who are still looking to hit the jackpot. At the top of Chad’s mind to watch are Dominic Ursetta, the Yaegers, Jeff Taylor, Sir Lawrence O’Connor, and “The Weekend Warrior” Ricky Alvarado.
Chad was last heard on XR+ from the Colossal 100 at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway alongside Jason Frommelt, who will be the other half of the announcing duo at The Duel. This dynamic duo provides intelligent race announcing with witty banter. Mike Nuchols will also join the team, providing technical explanations and filming trackside action to use on the live broadcast.
