“Reclaiming the Shade” is a comedy podcast hosted by friends Ebonie and Brandon. Every week, these two writers get together to act a fool, discuss what’s going on in the world, and throw a little shade.
We’re back for our first episode of 2018! In this episode, we discuss current events ranging from Oprah’s recent Golden Globes speech to problematic hoodies and y’all’s president (because he’s not ours). Things were all upbeat until we had to make things a bit dark in the end. But put us on at work, home or wherever you are, and enjoy!
It’s our last episode of the year! We’ve (almost) made it to the end of 2017. And good riddance. This episode, we talk about how we felt about 2017 and what we’re looking forward to in 2018.
We’re back! This episode we follow the Alabama senate election as the votes were tallied. We also discuss how cold it’s getting and Ebonie’s refusal to acknowledge Brandon’s Florida winter struggles. Put us on at work or at the house and enjoy … and then go watch Coco!
It’s time to talk holidays. Be it Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, the time is ripe for holiday celebrations. We discuss the highs and lows of the winter holiday season and things we have no time for during this time of year. Spoiler alert, we should probably apologize to Kwanzaa and India.Arie–but we won’t.
In what is probably our most controversial episode yet, we share our unpopular opinions. We discuss people, places and things everyone else seems to love except us, be it certain brands of alcohol; Cracker Barrel, a beloved, but terrible, southern chain restaurant; or “My Black Is Beautiful,” an uplifting but corny music video. We also discover who Lil Uzi Vert is. Enjoy!
In the wake of current scandals, we take a look at problematic celebrities. We talk current events and then take a walk down problematic celebrity history lane. From Dr. Dre and his domestic abuse allegations to Brandy beefing with literally everone in her path and Whoopi OK’ing Ted Danson showing up in blackface. So have a listen and see if some of your faves are problematic. Also, WHOOPI, WHAT ARE YOU DOING???
This episode, we discuss the career fumbles of Chrisette Michele and Tina Campbell. Also, we discuss Ebonie’s amazing comedy show experience and Brandon’s immense jealousy. And, because we recorded on Halloween night, there’s some candy foolery thrown in as well. Enjoy!
If we’re going to live this life, we want to be healthy while doing it. In this week’s episode, we discuss the variety of ways to work toward better health. From swimming to obstacle runs to yoga and traditional gym activities, we explore workouts we’ve done, want to try and that just aren’t for us. AND life tip: you’re not going to find the love of your life on Craigslist personals.
In what could have been one hell of a downer episode, we were able to reclaim our joy while talking about the apocalypse, California wildfires, the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, Mayim Bialik’s abysmal article in the New York Times, victim blaming, and the busted monstrosity that is Sunny Anderson’s wig collection. We also examine Toni Braxton’s relationship with Birdman. No matter what you do, DON’T TRUST ANYONE WITH FACE TATTOOS!

We had the audacity to do yet another show about sports. Thank God our boy John graced us yet again with his presence to help us out. We look at the humor and, misfortune, in sports teams names, from the Lugnuts to the Savages and the Banana Slugs. And it wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t also cover snap-era hip-hop, Living Single, and high STD rates among the elderly. Enjoy!
We barely follow sports yet foolishly decided to discuss them. Thank God we got John–BFF of the show–to join us for more good times and to lend his sports expertise so the two of us didn’t sound like complete dummies. This episode was a heavy one. With mass shootings, natural disasters, protests, and other not-so-fun things going on in the world recently, we knew we had to discuss them. In these turbulent times, what better way to go into your weekend than with our episode about nothing? In what was supposed to be a show about autumn, we talk about the fall and winter seasons, the oddity that is the South, tales of cotton picking, and more. But probably the most important thing we discuss is our undying love of the Sister Act series, especially the sequel.
We had to take off a week because of that no good Hurricane Irma, but we’re back. And this week, we’re talking about the importance of self-awareness. We also discuss the unspoken black person rule of cheering for the black person on game shows, award shows, pageants, kindergarten graduations, and parole hearings. We end the show with a special dedication to the joy that Leslie Jones has brought into our lives. Enjoy!

We started this podcast with good intentions. We said we would lift the shade on every episode … or at least every other episode. But we haven’t done that since about 23 episodes ago. To remedy this, we dedicated an entire episode to lifting the shade off people, real and fictional. But we, being the trash we are, couldn’t keep it 100 percent positive. Enjoy the (lifting of the) shade.
What we thought would be a serious episode about Hurricane Harvey, the woes of the current administration, and the stains of racism evolved into a spirited conversation about how we can find joy in even the saddest of times. Join us as we turn lemons into lemonade and pig scraps into bangin-ass ribs. Also, rebuke the Jheri curl at all costs!!!
Much like R.E.M., we’ve lost our religion, in a manner of speaking. This episode, we get into why we no longer feel the need to go to church. But while we don’t practice all aspects of Christianity, we discuss why we still hold onto certain aspects of it. Also, we talk “Game of Thrones,” Ebonie’s love of scandalous twitter videos, and the dangers of peaking in middle school.
After a week away, we are back! And more atrocious than ever. This week, we discuss Usher’s herpes woes, unprotected sex and black-on-others racism in “Insecure,” and how “back like cooked crack” became a thing people say. Sit back, break out your flute, and twerk up a storm, all while listening to our new episode.
What we thought was going to be an episode about the return of “Insecure” turned out to be an episode about people, real and fake, who are trash. R. Kelly, Usher, Issa (at times), and Lawrence. There’s trash all around, but at least “Insecure” makes it all funny.
John fails in his attempts to keep us in line this episode. To be more accurate, he knew trying to keep us in line was an exercise in futility. He did, however, join us for another episode to discuss the perils of office jobs, embracing life via jet skis, and why voicemail may or may not be that bad. Join us for the shenanigans.
HE’S BACK!!! The one and only John rejoins us on our 21st, or is it our 20th, episode. Here, we discuss a variety of topics ranging from phrases we dislike to the importance of emotions and things Aaliyah may or may not have done. So join us on this hilarious ride and let us know what you think.
