When I was coming up, we used to say “Liar! Liar! Pants on Fire!?” If that was true today, from Presidents to Politicians to Pastors to Parents to Players to Prominent People in News, Movies and Social Media – everybody would be burning because we have become a Nation of Lies! You don’t know what to believe! You don’t know who to believe! On every issue, half the people believe one thing and the other half believe something else! We’re so divided as a Country (especially in politics, policies, policing) . . . Church (especially in our message, mission) . . . Community (crime, mental wellness, schools). It’s not just frustrating! It’s not just foolish! It’s FATAL! Yes, Fatal. Everybody think lying is Funny. No, it’s FATAL! Since LYING is Fatal to both speaker and listener, Stop Lying to yourself and others!

I was shocked! I couldn’t believe it! Rushing, I caught a plane to Reno late Thursday evening. After a couple hours of sleep, I was back up getting ready to do a workshop when I realize that I had packed two (2) Right Shoes! I was going to have to wear a suit with Tennis Shoes and this was my first time at this church! I was shocked! I couldn’t believe it! Paul was also SHOCKED in our text! He had just finished starting these new churches in the Galatian area on his First Missionary Journey. Acts 13:38-39, 42-45. Paul preaching the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ. People were getting saved. The whole city had turned out to hear and many got saved. Obviously, the naysayers had gained a foothold and Paul needed to write this letter to defend the minister he was (an Apostle) and the message (the Gospel) he preached. How could they be turning away from the truth so quickly? Since Satan’s job is to Twist the Truth, Tarnish our Testimony, and Turn folks from Trusting in Jesus, we need to be SURE in what we have!

We want ALL that we can get out of life! We want to have everything, do everything, go everywhere, and get everything we want. Yet, James had sobering message to the rich people, “Check Your Balance!” Financially, you’re rich but Spiritually, you’re bankrupt! Fashionably, you’re dressed to kill, but morally, you’re naked because your clothes have been eaten by moths. Socially, you’re the GOAT, but in God’s eyes, you’re a low-down snake in the grass. Your wealth is corroding. Your vicious ways have caught up with you. Your greed has been condemned. Your heart has been corrupted. Your future is being canceled. What about you? What about me? What about you? Have you checked your balance lately? Do you think you are better off than you really are? If we dial Heaven’s 1-800 number and inquire about your worth, your balance, your bottom-line, your value, what will the automated voice on say about you? Since our Balance depends upon what we put into life, make some DEPOSITS, and give it your Best! How do we make DEPOSITS into life?

We don’t know how many? We don’t know what the occasion. But what a sight! Parents bringing their children to Jesus so that He could touch and bless them. What a sight that they would be able to say that my child was touched by Jesus! What a Shame! The disciples scolded the parents. The disciples said, “Stop, get away!” Where was their compassion for the parents . . . ? Where was their commitment to Jesus? Jesus had said, “I’ve come to seek and save that which is lost? Where was their concern for the community and the children? What better way to ensure future community success than to have children who have been touched by Jesus grow up to become adults who touch the lives of others? If ever there was a time, it is now to bring them to Jesus. Have you looked around? Carjacking. Stealing cars and they say that is often young children 12-15. Bring them to Jesus. Since these times require some desperate measures, bring them to Jesus!

“Who Yo Daddy?” (John 8:31-47 NLT) Maury Povich and his signature TV Paternity test made popular, “You’re NOT the Father!” And sometimes equally, “You ARE the Father!” From Excitement to Explosive, from Entertainment to the Eccentric, who would’ve thought a SIMPLE TEST could cause so much commotion! Well, Maury, enjoy retirement, but you weren’t the first. Jesus Christ did a Spiritual Paternity Test on His critics and verified to their Shock and Surprise that God was NOT their Father! (John 8:41) Indeed, their real daddy was the devil! (John 8:44). I don’t want to be the cause of FAMILY DRAMA today. Do you look like your Daddy? Do you favor your Father? Have you checked lately? Are you sure? Who Your Daddy? Since DNA will reveal your True Identity, put your Life to the Test!

Who’s Buttering Your Bread?” (Mark 8:11-17 NLT) They didn’t get it! They just didn’t get it! After everything Jesus did, they still questioned His identity, doubted His ability, argued His authority, debated His Sovereignty, and even contested His credibility. No, this wasn’t just outsiders but even His insiders, His own disciples. What would it take for them to simply BELIEVE? What would it take for them to put their total FAITH in Jesus Christ? That is what “frustrated” Jesus – notice the movement of back and forth - He feeds a multitude on the east side and go to the west side only to be met by Unbelieving Pharisees troubling Him for a test – NO (vv.12-13) – then He gets back in the boat with doubting Disciples who’s arguing over one loaf of bread. And Jesus asked the question, “Don’t you understand yet? (v.21)” Since even the FAITH to believe is a Gift from God, thank Him for what you have and trust Him for even more

“Let’s Do Something!” (Luke 9:37-43 NLT) What an Indictment against the disciples then and the Church today – The Inability to Solve a Problem. We have more WORDS than WINS; more TALK than TRANSFORMATIONS; more ACCOLADES than ACCOMPLISHMENTS. Can you feel the frustration of this father in Luke 9:40, “I begged Your disciples to cast out the spirit, but they couldn’t do it.” Even when it comes to the issues affecting our youth today - Teenage Pregnancy – Gang Recruitment/Involvement – Gun Violence and Senseless Killings – Poverty and Hopelessness – Drugs and Alcohol Addiction – too often the report – “They couldn’t do it.” Since Jesus has given the Church More than Enough to do ministry, Let’s Do Something!

“There’s Still Hope” (Mark 5:35-36 NLT) I Can’t! I Can’t! I Can’t! It’s the cry of the single mother raising boys, working 2 ½ jobs just to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads and yet he still goes and get involved with gangs and drugs and a life of crime (just a side note to the young brothers . . . stop being angry at who left and start being appreciative of who stayed and supported you and show her your gratitude by simply doing right!). I Can’t! I Can’t! I Can’t! It’s the cry of the struggling couple who after one too many hurts and harsh words declare, “I Can’t Do This Anymore!” I Can’t – the cry of the burnout teacher, the frustrated worker, the stressed police officer. We’ve been there where all hope seemingly is gone, when you wonder if even prayer can make a difference. Such was the case in our text. It’s too far gone. Things have gotten too bad. The situation is beyond curable. “There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.” Since you can enjoy SUCCESS even in the most SERIOUS SITUATION when Jesus is around, Get Close to Jesus and keep Jesus Close to you!

“A House Divided” (Luke 11:17 NLT) What Power Jesus demonstrated! Jesus cast a demon from a man. Luke 11:14 He freed the man from bondage. He favored the man with a double blessing of healing his inability to speak. What Power! There are no demons that can conquer us. There are no difficulties that can control us. One word from the Lord and we can be Healed, Delivered and Set FREE! What Pain Jesus Dealt with. Jesus greatest opposition wasn’t from the outside but inside, not from the crowds but the so-call church folks. And since they couldn’t win with the TRUTH, they used TRASH TALKING against Jesus! They had the audacity to call Jesus a devil! Luke 11:15 Oh, I need to remind us in this social media frenzy, opinion-driven, where everybody wants to be heard and seen, don’t be alarmed when your haters come after you with lies, rumors, and innuendos. What Principle Jesus Delivered! Luke 11:17 What a reminder that we’re better together, that we’re stronger united, that we succeed when we work as ONE! Since DIVISION will always lead to DESTRUCTION, let LOVE heal old wounds!

Can’t we SEE what’s happening? Are we really this BLIND? When will we be HONEST with ourselves and stop the HYPOCRISY? It’s easy to point the finger and point out the faults in others while we justify the junk in our own lives. When it comes to JUDGING, Jesus was simply saying, “Start with Yourself!” We’re trying to see specks in others, but we can’t see and won’t deal with the LOG in our own eyes. The Lord is not saying that we can’t call out another person’s sins. When it comes to JUDGING, Jesus was simply saying, “Start with Yourself!”

“Team Jesus” (Mark 2:13-17 NLT) What a Crowd! Everywhere Jesus went, news spread, and the crowd came. We see it Mark 2:1-2. We see it in Mark 2:13. Oh, brothers and sisters, let’s spread the news so that the crowds will come. That is Jesus’ desire for each one of us. Luke 14:23 “So his master said, ‘Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be full.” What a Controversy! Everybody wasn’t happy about the miracles taking place, the message going forth and the multitudes being impacted. What a reminder! Haters still exist! Naysayers will always have something to say. Unfortunately, like with Jesus, it wasn’t outsiders but other so-called church folks! (Funerals) Yet, Jesus didn’t stop, didn’t slow down, didn’t sway from His purpose! Because of His example and empowerment, Brown, after 34 years I’m still excited to be with Team Jesus! I just wanted to remind us of Who’s Team we’re on. Not Orr Team! Team Jesus! My mind’s made up. My eyes are looking up. My steps have been pepped up. Are you on the Team? Since life’s only meaning is in Jesus Christ, join the Winning Team

“Where There’s A Will, There’s A Way!”(Philemon 14-15 NLT). I’ll Never! Over My Dead Body! It’ll be a cold day in . . . before I ever speak to them again! It will never happen! It’s too Much! I’ll Never Be Able To Do That! Have you ever been Stubborn and Stuck in your way about something? Have you ever sold yourself short, thinking that certain things were just impossible to do? Do you ever feel Stressed and Strained because somebody is making you do something you really don’t want to do? Paul asked a HUGE favor of his friend, Philemon! Onesimus had stolen from his master, Philemon – Loss of Money! Onesimus had run away from his master – Loss of Labor! Now, Paul is asking the unthinkable. Paul wants to send Onesimus

back in a new position, with a higher pay, and with more power! And Paul wanted Philemon to do is Willingly! I want you to do this WILLINGLY. I don’t want to have to force you, call your hand, hold something over your head . . . Since by CHOICE and not by FORCE puts you on a whole another COURSE, always be WILLING to work things out!

John 1:16-18 NLT From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.

What’s the right way of doing church? In Person or Online? At home or in the sanctuary? Virtual or Hybrid? Podcast or Facebook or Radio – Is that enough? Do you join or just attend? Is Membership really important? Do I need a congregation, a church building, a crowd, company or can I have church all by myself? What a reminder in this small, personal letter of what makes church really CHURCH! Philemon is the beautiful, personal letter of the Apostle Paul to his friend, Philemon, on behalf of Onesimus. Onesimus was Philemon’s runaway slave who had possibly robbed Philemon before running away (Philemon 16, 18). Onesimus went to Rome and got saved under Paul’s ministry. Now, Paul was sending him back to right the wrong of his past and to chart a new course for his present and future. What a Reminder – More than Rules to Follow, Church is about Relationships to Fortify! More than just the Place we Gather, Church is about the People and how we Grow! More than just Getting Even and point out Faults, Church is about Getting Ahead and Pointing others to the Father! Since we can only get out of church what we put into the church, get it right and Church will bless you for a lifetime!

Jonah 3:1-5 NLT Then the Lord spoke to Jonah a second time: 2 “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh, and deliver the message I have given you.” 3 This time Jonah obeyed the Lord’s command and went to Nineveh, a city so large that it took three days to see it all. 4 On the day Jonah entered the city, he shouted to the crowds: “Forty days from now Nineveh will be destroyed!” 5 The people of Nineveh believed God’s message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow.

Jonah 1:1-6 NLT The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.” 3 But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish. 4 But the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart. 5 Fearing for their lives, the desperate sailors shouted to their gods for help and threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship. But all this time Jonah was sound asleep down in the hold. 6 So the captain went down after him. “How can you sleep at a time like this?” he shouted. “Get up and pray to your god! Maybe he will pay attention to us and spare our lives.”

It happens . . . LOSS and the Losses add up – and before you know it you’re feeling BITTER thinking you have nothing left! It happens . . . LIFE and the Load of Life weigh you down – and before you know it you’re feeling BITTER as if you can’t take anything else. It happened to Naomi – her happily ever after Fairy Tale ended abruptly. First, the Famine took her Home away as she, her husband and sons fled their country for better opportunity. Then, Funerals took her husband and ten years later her sons. Now, her Future seems Hopeless. Now, it’s not just her as a widow but her two daughters-in-law! Talk about a Bitter Pill to Swallow. She felt the Bitterness. (Nobody could understand totally what she was feeling!) She expressed her Bitterness – Ruth 1:13 – (can you hear the frustration in Naomi’s voice) let me stop fooling myself! Y’all go home. I’m fighting a losing battle! Then, she went as far as changing her name to Bitterness – Ruth 1:20. I just believe that I have some Naomi’s in the house today! Times of Life have robbed you of your beauty! You don’t even look like your old self. The Trials of Life have drained you of your strength and dignity. Pastor, I’m here but I’m Bitter! Bitter because of financial struggles. Bitter because he left me. Bitter because he didn’t leave me! Bitter because of the sickness. Bitter because I’ve been overlooked for the promotion. Bitter because I’m raising children by myself. Bitter because of the loneliness. I hear you, “How do I make it better?” How do I make it better when everything is against me . . . when God, Himself, is fighting against me? Since SUCCESS start with your perspective, to make it Better, drop the “i” and replace it with “e”!
