In this episode of the "Whole Health Series", Dr. Iris Schrijver shares practical guidance from her expertise in lifestyle medicine and highlights key points from her new book, On the Path to Health, Wellbeing, and Fulfilment: To Your Health.

This compelling book investigates the basis of what we think we know about healthy living. How much do we actually know about the information that is presented as fact by health crusaders and in the media? How do perceptions of truth and validity influence our behavior and our health?

This new book provides a key to understanding how we can all improve and support health to thrive in any phase of life. It demystifies medical research, sorts fact from fiction, and presents a journey of discovery that includes a realistic look at the evidence of biological, psychological, and cultural determinants of health. It explores the factors that support or undermine health, and reveals the influences on our use and understanding of health information.

Lifestyle-driven chronic diseases now account for the majority of premature deaths globally. The measures we can take to improve and maintain health throughout life include personal choices, but reach all the way into the delivery of healthcare and the social fabric of our world. This book reveals how health and wellness are affected by processes on a local and global scale, including the lack of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Guided by her practice in academic and non-profit medicine, Dr. Iris Schrijver highlights the practical impact of scientific studies in a broad range of disciplines and brings to life their relevance and limitations with stories and anecdotes. As such, this book is essential reading for anyone who wonders why there is so much left to learn about what truly enhances wellbeing and survival.

Meet Ayana Osborn, comedienne, mother of 4 children, and now, entrepreneur. We were thrilled to have her as a guest on the "Whole Health Series".

As DC's own homegrown comedienne, she is inspired by her oldest daughter (who has a medical complexity), former patients, and her late beloved father to share her sense of humor with the world. She can change any situation into smiles and laughter. She believes that laughter is the best medicine and can be channeled in very challenging situations.

As a mother of 4 children, parent leader and a community/family advocate working with DC families for over 15 years, Ayana has found a way to get family members connected and reconnected to strengthen the wellness of their family. Her life became challenging with the fight to keep her family healthy: educationally, physically, mentally, and emotionally so she began to become better organized and developed a plan so she would not be as stressed.

She is working her talent through stand-up, podcast, and community projects such as the co-produced Podcast “DC Porch Talk” and her own show “Da Comedy Couch” that was shown on the UnCensored Network. As a Domestic Violence Survivor, she has starred in "Spoiled by Your Love, "which shared her personal survival story.

Ayana is currently working as a Certified Peer, Family, and Youth support Specialist under Washington, DC's Department of Behavioral Health. She also just finished her course to be an Addiction Counselor with Catholic Charities Institute.

Bringing laugh therapy into Mental & Substance/Domestic Violence Abused families leads to her current project with Eliana’s Light called “The Family Patches Project”. It is designed to assist families in working together so they can develop a wellness plan for each family member and the family as a whole!

Naturally, Ayana is known as “Lady”, having a beautiful sense of humor, the passion to make people smile and laugh, and the desire to help keep families healthy and working together.
