I don’t think there are a lot of surprises in our host's list, and we all know who the 2/3 best defenders are in the French league, but it was nonetheless interesting to look at some of the stats and to remember some of the games that involved la Crème de la Crème as we say in France – and it s interesting to see how many will still play in Ligue 1 next season!

Jeremy Magan with the latest in French Football analyzed Ligue 1's Matchday 37th

At the bottom of the table, Bordeaux will need a real miracle to avoid ligue 2 after a draw at home – although it was their 1st home clean sheet of the season.

Saint-Etienne in an empty stadium lost to Reims and let Metz, winner at home against Angers, take the 18th spot with a better goal difference.

PSG, for maybe the last away game with Mbappé in their ranks, won comfortable 4-0 in Montpellier.

Lyon for their last game at home beat Nantes 3-2, but too little too late for OL, too far to hope for European football next season.

The top of the table battle will be extraordinary next week. Nice lost almost everything, unable to beat Lille at home. Galtier’s former club saw Jonathan David finally waking up to win 3-1 at the Allianz Arena.

Lens bought themselves some hope by beating Troyes in Champagne. A win at home against… Monaco! Could qualify les Sang et Or for Europe next year.

Monaco came back from 0-2 at home to beat Brest 4-2 thanks to a hat trick from Ben Yedder and now sit pretty at the 2nd spot after this incredible 9 consecutive win series.

Strasbourg made the most of their last home game, beating Clermont 1-0 and keeping their fate in their hand before visiting OM at the Velodrome for Matchday 38.

Les Marseillais found their master at Rhoazon Park, dominated head and shoulder by Rennes.

Les Rouge et Noir, 4th on the table, can still end 2nd if they win while Monaco and Marseille lose.

The last game of the season, with OM-Strasbourg, Lens-Monaco and Lille-Rennes, will be VERY entertaining.

Bordeaux is fighting to avoid relegation now and it raises the question of fans neutrality and a singular way of running the club for the ever-so-controversial former Lille owner Gerard Lopez.

In the second part of this 20th Episode, Jeremy Magan analyses Ligue 1's Matchday 29th, with PSG losing to Monaco, OM winning the duel against Nice at the top of the table, and things getting rather complicated for Metz and Bordeaux …

[Match Analysis]

  • [Monaco 3-0 PSG] -> PSG seems to have given up on their season

  • [Rennes 6-1 Metz] – Rennes thrashes Metz and disrupt the race for UCL

  • [ O. Marseille 2-1 Nice] – The southern derby that has been talked about too much for the wrong reasons early this season was this time all about football, and OM took all 3 points

  • [Bordeaux 0-2 Montpellier] – Bordeaux, even against 9 men, can’t score

  • [Lorient 0-0 Strasbourg] - 4th draw in 5 games for Strasbourg.

  • [Nantes 0-1 Lille] - The talk of the game unfortunately was off the pitch, with Sylvain Armand making a fool of himself again

  • [Lens 3-1 Clermont] - Lens has not been in great form at home and hosting Clermont was a chance to turn that around, and also celebrate Clauss’ first call in the French National team.

  • [Reims 0-0 O. Lyon] Lyon just cannot reproduce their European form on the domestic scene

  • [Saint Etienne 1-1 Troyes] The duel of the bottom for this matchday was the first game of the weekend and ended with a draw.

  • [Angers 1-0 Brest] - Finally Angers get a win! Gerald Baticle and his team had lost 7 straight before the weekend, but won at the best time, when everyone else at the bottom did not!

We've all seen our share of penalty shootouts over the last few weeks...

In Episode 13 of The Tactics Room, Will Fowler (@WillFowler5) goes under the hood of the shootout and analyzes why they're more than just putting the ball on the spot and shooting from twelve yards. The psychological, neurological, and physiological factors constantly at play make the penalty shootout one of the most intriguing -- and most difficult to understand -- displays that world football has to offer.

Ligue 1 matchday 26 Match Review:

  • [Montpellier x Rennes] - First win away for Rennes in a while

  • [Strasbourg x Nice] – 'Les Aiglons' parked the bus

  • [PSG x Saint Etienne] - The only home win of the weekend is for Paris

  • [Monaco x Reims] – 3500th goal for Monaco, but wasn't enough for the club of the principality who crashed at home in the last 5 minutes of the game.

  • [Clermont x Bordeaux] - Bordeaux is looking better, 2 draws under Guion – but still looking for a clean sheet.

  • [Brest x Lorient] - First win away this season for Lorient, thanks to young recruit Ibrahima Kone

  • [Angers x Lens] - 2 mistakes from GK Petkovic cost Angers the game after they started it well.

  • [Metz x Nantes] - The “match null” of the weekend saw Metz failing to put any shot on target.

  • [Troyes x O. Marseille] - OM showed how hard it's been for them to convert their domination into real opportunities.

  • [Lyon x Lille] Lille did the only thing they could do against Lyon – defend well, and hope for the best. 'Les Gones' overwhelmingly dominated, in vain.

In this episode, Jeremy Magan analyzes a manager that could be considered one of the bests in Ligue 1. Focusing on one key moment, as well as some of his tactical concepts and man-management.

Galtier, a former football player in France who played for Marseille, Lille, Toulouse, Angers, Nimes, and OM again before 2 short stints overseas.

After his playing career, he set himself to become a coach, and to do so, he was first an assistant coach while passing his diploma.

He was an assistant at OM again, then Bastia, and then he followed Alain Perrin while the famous French coach was in the middle east, but also at Lyon, Saint Etienne, Sochaux, and Portsmouth in the UK.

He finally got his first gig as a number 1 at Saint-Etienne, to replace Alain Perrin. Stayed with Les Verts for 9 years, and during these 9 years, he went from saving them from a possible relegation to qualifying them 4 times for European competitions...

  • [Match Review] Rennes x Troyes - Rennes exposed ESTAC's difficulties defensively

  • [Match Review] Saint-Etienne x Strasbourg - 'Les Verts' are happy with a point that gets them out of the relegation zone for the first time since matchday 5.

  • [Match Review] Reims x Brest - Rakjovic was one of the heroes of the game, saving everything he could, and even got a bit of help from his posts.

  • [Match Review] Bordeaux x Monaco - 'Les Girondins' got a point at home against 'Les Monégasques', who were down to 10 men for almost 1 hour.

Jeremy talks about another entertaining weekend in Ligue 1:

  • [ Reims x Bordeaux ]

Reims had not won a game by at least 5 goals since October 1975, and now thanks to Bordeaux, who added bad luck to their already long list of struggles, they have done it again!

  • [ OGC Nice x Clermont ]

There is such thing as Galtier making mistakes and this game against Clermont looked to be exactly that.

  • [ Troyez x Metz ]

It’s time for your French lesson - in French a null all draw is called “match nul”, and nul also means poor quality, well this was a proper match nul

  • [Strasbourg x Nantes ]

An interesting game was on at La Meinau between 2 of the surprises of the season, separated only by a point before the game.

  • [ Rennes x Brest ]

Rennes deserved their win, dominating Brest head and shoulders all game.

  • [Lille x PSG]

  • PSG finally showing some teeth 10 days before their Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

His guest for Episode 5 was Alex Barker, better known on social media as the Euro Expert.

Alex joined Will for a virtual video call and the truth is that there's not a whole lot that they didn't talk about...

They spoke about abstract stats - expected goals, expected assists - and why Alex thinks they're still so misunderstood.

Moreover, they even talked about Alex's own personal struggles and how he views them as a strength, not a weakness.
