Few fighting games do single player modes like Mortal Kombat. I have never been the biggest MK fan, but after playing through the single player campaign alongside a friend in college, Mortal Kombat X sold me on the series story and lore. MK11 further dug me in with all the cinematics and engrossing story. It's campy and ridiculous, but its a good kind of campy and ridiculous. Go play Mortal Kombat.

More games should end in a way where, if the original version is going away, then the game can be preserved by fans for years to come. I'm a big proponent for preservation and, considering how lots of games seem to be ending recently, it's nice that companies are putting in the effort for their work to exist well into the future.

The first ever video game song to receive a Grammy was the song Baba Yetu composed by Christopher Tin as the theme for Civilization 4 on 2011, though that was before there was an official category for video game music. I'm glad to see who gets nominated next year. Because of the Grammy cut-off window being the end of September, Bear McCreary received his nomination for Call of Duty, but I expect to see another for God of War next year.

I really don't think there needs to be any more Uncharted. Too often now are companies focused on producing more and more from an IP until returns diminish and not when it is a suitable time to end. Uncharted 4 is one of the most fitting endings to a series I've ever played and I would not want to see any more from that world unless there is a spectacularly compelling reason to go back, like an Uncharted Kart racer. Where is Unkarted?

I don't play enough racing games. I put a few dozen hours into Forza every once in a while, but I do miss a good simulation racing experience like the mainline Forza Motorsport games. If there's any star to come from The Game Awards 2022, it was the absolute king of woodwinds and flutes Pedro Eustache during the final GOTY orchestral medley. The dude absolutely rocking the flute parts for the music of Xenoblade 3? The guy headbanging through the whole thing? Yeah, that dude is a legend. You can hear his performances in the music for films like Dune, Interstellar, The Lion King, and most Pixar movies from the last decade.
Oh yeah, and news, but really, flute guy Pedro Eustache is great.

IKEA is the perfect place for a horror game. Each visit feels ever so slightly unsettling. The gray voids between these supposedly lived in spaces triggers a feeling of discomfort in me, like the uncanny valley feeling. Perhaps its that same feeling from witnessing liminal spaces, the spooky voids of purportedly lived in spaces that feel very un-lived in. And when it comes to survival in an IKEA, catch me in the food court smacking down Swedish meatballs and lingonberries.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer outdid any expectations I had of what the movie would look like. In one shot, there's a little stream near Mario and it's full of Cheap Cheaps! All the little details are there. Despite the reception around them, none of the criticisms around Illumination's other films have to do with the animation. The animation is always absolutely stunning, particularly water. I'm excited to see the rest of the cast as well as get a better idea of what the film will actually be about.

I don't normally report on leaks, but this GTA 6 one is arguably one of the biggest leaks to come from any game ever. One of my favorite things to come from the leak was the outpouring of support from other developers showing early forms of their games as early as Gray Box. Gray Box is when there aren't any art assets to apply to the level geometry, so you're literally playing through a bunch of gray boxes. Getting little peaks behind the curtain of game development, when the developer actually means to, is always a pleasure.

The first time I heard of Tokyo Game Show, I thought it was like an actual game show, where various developers would compete to see who had the best game. That was how the show's Game of the Year was decided - by having various developers compete in game show competitions and antics to see who was the best. I was only slightly disappointed to find out it was just a trade show.

So cloud gaming is pretty great. I frequently turn to Xbox Game Streaming when I'm avoiding my responsibilities at work or killing time between meetings, but mostly the former. There's some genres of games that the services work very nicely with, like card-based games or turn-based strategy. Heck, even games like Halo work significantly better than I could have ever imagined. However, when I'm at work, I'm connected to an absolutely god-tier gigabit network with an enterprise-grade Wifi 6e router above me. None of these games, even the card-based ones, work particularly well on my bus commute to and from the office. The internet may be great around the world, which is where I think Logitech is likely targeting with their Streaming Console, but the thing is not going to take off in the US. And if I'm wrong, I will record an episode dressed as public domain Winnie the Pooh.

After a week of watching GamesDoneQuick, I've been doing nothing but playing games quickly. Neon White dropped at just the right time. When was the last time a remade game needed to be remade? I was thinking the Master Chief Collection, although that's more along the lines of the game being fundamentally broken at launch and needing to be progressively reworked. Some studios simply invest in re-remaking failed titles, like the recent Warcraft 3 remaster. Tweet @8BitsGG with your thoughts of re-remade games.

I don't think about it very often, but the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series was really foundational to me early in my gaming career. It was pure gaming bliss in the 3D age, which wasn't as popular in the 3D era outside of Sega arcade ports like Crazy Taxi. It's partially why I still love pure games like arcadey mobile games. At some point with a franchise you have so many entries that you completely forgo numbers and just start adding colons and subtitles. Assassin's Creed hit that point a long time ago, to the point that they are now completely skipping numbers and just doing all of them. 1, 2, subtitles, 3, 4, subtitles, every single number ever (infinity.) It feels weird reporting on video games in a time of global crisis. Being yet another voice talking about video games feels so inconsequential in the vast digital ether of the internet when there are real things happening. Yet, seeing the responses from local Ukrainian game developers in the face of danger changed my tune a bit. Games matter, but the people that make them matter more. There's a lot of terrible things going on around the game industry that you should know about.
It's always hard covering stories like the ones featured in today's episode, particularly because, despite all the hardship that the people from these teams go through, they always manage to put together something fun in the end. I sympathize with all the workers, and I hope I can keep you informed on their hardships.
Not all is terrible this week though, so look out for the good stuff coming out of this week's episode.

The newest Steam tech is the Steam Deck!
Valve has come out of almost nowhere to shake up the holiday console wars. How will this effect Nintendo? Will it effect Nintendo?
Will you be picking up a Steam Deck? Frankly it looks pretty nifty.

Sorry if audio is kind of weird this week. It's 2 in the morning, I'm sleepy, and my building has no power! On the bright side, the quiet should make things sound a bit more ambient.
Is this the Nintendo Switch Pro? I don't think so, but let me tell you about it!

Playstation is opening up its wallet, but not to indie developers. Humble Bundle isn't opening up its wallet, as its wallet seems pretty empty. Members of the FaZe clan thickened up their wallets at the cost of their fans' wallets. I don't have anywhere else for this wallet metaphor to go.

We're halfway through the year and the gaming news doesn't stop! Neither does the heat! I'm gonna need to a mop to clean up all the sweat from trying to record this episode. Yuck. Be sure to stay cool and stay hydrated out there this summer. If it's getting colder or wetter in your part of the world, stay warm, stay dry, and always stay hydrated.
Oh yeah, gaming news.
Windows 11 sure seems like it's gonna shake things up once it hits this fall, especially with all the new additions. But what new additions? Tune in and find out!

Believe it or not, there was a whole lot of news that happened outside of E3 this week, or at least 8 things.
What is the fate of Five Night's at Freddy's?
Will Playstation gamers ever get Starfield?
Will anyone ever recognize me for saying Xcloud was coming to Xbox One for years at this point??
All very important questions, and the answers to at least two of those are contained inside this episode. Check it out!

Ah jeez, today really wasn't that great news wise was it? It's okay. All is forgiven. Covid and quarantine made development significantly harder, so gearing up for E3 must have been particularly difficult.
Today featured updates from Halo Infinite, Elden Ring, and Razer.

Did you choose Chaos today? Square Enix sure did.
Today was a doozy when it came to announcements, so be sure to check out the archives of all the showcases! I'm sure there will be something anyone can love. What was your favorite game today? Mine was probably TinyKin! It looks like a cutesy version of Pikmin with platforming elements around the most suburban home.

The summer of games is heating up to better align with rising ambient temperatures globally. Stay cool, gamers!
Also happy Pride Month to all my LGBTQIA+ listeners. I see you out there and I support you.
Be sure to tune in next week for multiple episodes of 8 Bits highlighting every day of E3!
Also be sure to follow the show on twitter @8BitsGG for updates regarding the show, especially regarding any potential delays. I've been working night shifts the past week and the sheer concept of time has gone out the window for me. I may or may not have had to rerecord the intro a couple of times because I wasn't sure what day it was, or is? What day is it anyway?

Sorry if the audio isn't totally up to snuff this week. I think my microphone is on its last legs. The poor guy has had to put up with my voice for almost seven years now.
I promise this isn't a financial podcast, I just really like talking about sales figures and charts. In another life, I'm an accountant somewhere organizing these numbers for y'all. But in this life, I'm here to give you the video game news of the week! Lots of numbers, but also some interesting updates regarding the future of trading cards at retail.

There is so much news this week, most of it stemming from the ongoing Epic v. Apple case.
If you want more in-depth coverage of the court proceedings, I recommend following the Twitter threads by Adi Robertson from The Verge (@thedextriarchy) and Rebekah Valentine from IGN (@duckvalentine) who have both been doing a phenomenal job breaking everything down.
As for the rest of the news, keep listening to me pls.

The Playstation 5 is a hit! And I put on my journalist cap to do some reporting on an Esports Certification Institute that arrived and disappeared just as quickly! Keep an eye out for updates on that story. I'll add an Extra Bit if I need to with any changes.

Remember when I would say "up to eight pieces of news?" This is one of those week with less than eight as the industry is gearing up for the summer to come. Based on the relative silence, I expect this summer to be a big one.

April is usually one of the slower times for gaming news as the early year games have released and companies haven't started teasing their Summer news cycles yet. As such, episodes may be a little short for the next few weeks, but I've put together as much as I can and I'm doing my best to provide a good show anyway!
This weeks makes Playstation and Xbox history, E3 news, and more!
