This week on the Underpowered Hour, we’ve got a lot of business to catch up on!

First up, DriveTribe has done a video about our friend Julian Schoolheifer’s restoration of the very first production Land Rover, JUE 477. If you haven’t listened to our interview with Julien, be sure to go back a few episodes and check out our replay to get the whole story. Link below to the video we talk about.

Next up, there’s a unique Red Camel Trophy car up on Bring a Trailer; the guys recorded this a few hours before the auction closed, so Ike and Steve debate whether the fact that it is red helps or hinders the collectible nature of the vehicle. (Check out the BAT listing below, and click through the comments to find out what happened when the auction closed).

And word on the street is that a new, mallet, all electric Defender has been confirmed for 2027. Will it be called Defender Sport? Why not, there’s already a Range Rover Sport and a Discovery Sport. Seems fitting, even if Bronco has jumped on that bandwagon too.

Then, we’ve got a favorite segment we call “Love It, Can’t Have It”, and this time we’re drooling over the German market Surf Defender in coveted Marine Blue. Consider this our official petition to make that color available in the rest of the world. Who knew that the luxury SUV market in Germany was synonymous with surfing? 🏄‍♂️

Then, we’re dishing on Immitation Rovers: Modern edition, and noting how the recently released Toyota Land Cruiser and the Hyundai Santa Fe are certainly borrowing some features from the new Defender. Particularly surprising is everyone’s obsession with copying the spice rack- we make fun of it a lot, but the market trends suggest people dig theirs! What do you put in your spice rack?

Lastly, we’re wrapping up with a giveaway. Tag us in your photos of you and your rover before Friday, Aug 18, and we’ll be giving out a copy of “In Search of Sheba” by Barbara Toy. For more entries, head over to Patreon and become a Patron for more opportunities to win. More details to follow.

This week, we talk about the improbable and absurd New Defender 6x6 model as spotted in the Dupont Registry (link below), and the guys discuss everything right (not much) and wrong (pretty much everything) about it.

Then we’re talking about Land Rover Defender thefts skyrocketing, and the guys share their not so serious thoughts on this serious issue plaguing these cars. Steve mentions he’s in the market for a Range Rover L322, and why a higher mileage car might suit him better than a lower mileage one. Steve mentions the XKE Jay Leno found in a garage in Burbank and how that came to be.

Then we dive into our interview with 1995 Camel Trophy US Team of Jim Swett and Daphne Greene, who give us some insight into the selection process and how they came to be teammates back in 1995. What led them to Camel Trophy in the first place, and what made them great teammates then and now? 20 years ago, Land Rover held the first ever G4 Challenge. A global marketing event designed to showcase the newest model of Range Rover, Freelander, Defender and Discovery, the event took place over four weeks in four different global locations. The fourth and final stage of the event took the competitors on a breathtaking 800+ mile route from Las Vegas, NV, to Moab, UT.

So how do you pay homage to this iconic part of Rover history? Well, if you’re So-cal resident and rover enthusiast Steve Cooper, you find a few fellow G4 Range Rover owners who own the original competition vehicles here in the US, and set out to recreate the route taken by the original competitors. And to do that, you reach out to none other than Land Rover photographer extraordinaire himself, Mr. Nick Dimbleby, who photographed the original event.

Liza joins Ike this week as they interview Steve Cooper, who dreamed up this harebrained recreation, and Chris Georgacas, who deciphered Nick’s notes and maps for this epic road trip. The four are joined by Nick Dimbleby himself, who gives us all some excellent insight into the original event.

Hear about some of the fun and adventure that was had by the gang as four of the original eight left hand drive Range Rovers used for the event re-traced the steps. Joined by the Underpowered Hour’s very own Liza and Abigail to document the fun, this adventure was undertaken by true enthusiasts of the best 4x4xfar.

How does this conversion compare to the Bronco or the Jeeps that come from the factory with soft tops? Ike and Steve give their opinions.

15:10 Steve finally got rid of the widowmaker, and in the words of Liza, "This is the stupidest thing [Steve's] ever done". Watch our socials this week for a video of the widowmaker being winched by a Defender into a truck and nearly destroying it in the process...

22:00 Ike has a new segment we're calling "From the Archives". This week, he talks about the infamous Land Rovers used in the early construction of Disneyworld in Florida, and Ike has some ideas how that deal came to be that Disney should purchase 49 Series IIA pickup trucks with PTOs for mowing roadside.

27:00 Did a Land Rover expedition to South America actually install snake venom sucking apparatus onto their manifolds? Listen to Ike tell us what he's learned.

On this week’s show, Maddi and Jenna are here to set the record straight and to share some more in depth stories about their recent Cooma trip. The girls share a pretty epic story, with much in depth focus on their good intentions, involving an 80” full of firewood, groceries, and all of Linus’ possessions

Last month, Cooma, Australia played host to the largest celebration for Land Rover’s 75th Anniversary.  The Pangolin crew of Ike, Linus, Jenna and Maddie made the pilgrimage to the land down under for this momentous occasion. But, before they could get to the Cooma festivities, first they had to embark on an epic drive from Melbourne to Cooma in an impressive assortment of vintage Series One Land Rovers (with a few black sheep). Hear tales of misadventure, told the way only Linus and Ike can tell it, from exploding drive shafts, swapping out gas tanks, perilous water crossings, and a mysterious Button Man…

On this week’s show, Ike and Steve discuss Jaguar Land Rover changing their name to JLR and the controversy surrounding them dropping the use of the Land Rover trademark… or not… then a chat about the all new Defender 130 Outbound Edition with room for 5 and almost 500HP. Updates on all the cars being worked on at Pangolin4x4 including the “Saw Truck” and then an update on British car shows and mini bikes in California.

Hope you had a great World Land Rover Day!

On this week’s episode, Chris (who doesn’t listen to the show) is filling in for Ike while he and the Pangolin crew continue their Cooma adventures down under. Long time friend of the Beres family, Chris has joined Steve for many if not most of his hair brained adventures, and has had a long history with many of the cars in the collection.

Today, Chris has a graph and a chart, and we’re ranking Steve’s Rovers, past & present, and grading them on a scale. With categories like BEST, PRETTY OKAY, AMAZING (BUT MIGHT NEVER LEAVE THE WORKSHOP), DAILY DRIVERIEST, AND OFF-ROADIEST. They break down fifteen different vehicles Steve has or currently owns, and ranks them accordingly, with some fun stories of misadventure over the years. It’s like picking your favorite child…

Highlights:

5:00: Introducing the chart and categories

7:40: 1970s British Military 109” Pickup

9:50: Range Rover Classic

12:00: 1993 Camel Trophy Discovery

Ike and Steve are back, and have lots to talk about this week.

(1:18): Doug DeMuro is selling his new-ish Defender, and we’re not totally buying that long repair times are necessarily the reason. Doesn’t every luxury brand have extraordinary lead times on repairs these days?

(7:05): A heartwarming story out of the Land Rover Service Awards, one of the recipients of a Defender 130 at last year’s Destination Defender event was able to rescue a bear cub in their new vehicle. Shout out to Appalachian Bear Rescue on their great work!

(10:05): JLR has a new interim CEO, and we’re not sure that Patrick McGillicutty isn’t just two kids in a trench coat pretending to be a grown up… But good luck to Patrick!

(11:55) Steve gives us a shop update, and tells us all about his new CNC Plasma Cutter that he got for a pretty reasonable entry cost all things considered. Ike asks some great questions to think about before making a purchase of your own.

(18:26) The widow maker is the world’s scariest forklift, and Steve’s industrial HOA wants him to get rid of it. We can’t imagine why…

(19:32) The moment we’ve all been waiting for, we have a very important update about the #undisputedkingoflandrovers that you won’t want to miss, including some number crunching to calculate the ratio of money to purchase vs. money to fix this god forsaken car…

(26:15) Ike is Cooma bound, and Steve catches up with him before they left to see how their prep for the trip to Australia is going. We can’t wait to catch up with them when they return Stateside in a couple of weeks. The boys also digress into a lot of discussion of koalas that no one needs…

(33:22): The newest issue of Rovers Magazine started hitting mailboxes, and Team 155: Full Sail Dream Team is featured prominently, along with the other four Land Rovers that ran the 2022 Rebelle. Huge shoutout to @landroverwriter Jeff Aronson for the great coverage.

(34:59) Instagram shoutouts to @Sheepish_Overlander and @the_canadian_freelander for living the life of Defenders, Jimnys and functioning Freelanders Steve can only experience in his dreams…

This week, Steve and Ike talk to the incomparable Jill Ciminillo @jillciminillo, automotive journalist and digital creator. She is the Managing Editor of Pick Up Truck + SUV Talk, where she writes and films digital reviews of late-model cars of all kinds. Episode highlights:2:10: The classic defender is for sale again, thanks to a collaboration between Lego and Land Rover, and the guys talk all about the Lego Defender set coming out soon6:18: Welcome Jill to the show, and talk about her career as an automotive journalist10:41- Ike and Jill talk about how honest newspaper reviews about cars are, and Jill shares some personal stories15:16: We talk about how AI is impacting writers, and why Jill’s job is still safe, as she offers valuable review information AI can’t provide.18:50: Jill sheds some light on the origin of her popular “girl in the trunk” series, and how it came to be, and even how it has influenced the build on some new cars, making “Ciminillo” a unit of measurement24:26: Jill shares with us some of her favorite manufacturers, and sings the praises of Mazda. We weigh in on whether the new Ferrari Purosague looks like a Mazda MX-30.27:34: Jill gives us her honest opinion on the Audi Q4 e-tron (spoiler: they missed the mark here…)28:46 And finally, we get to some details about the Range Rover sport she’s currently driving.33:11: Ike and Steve ask about cars Jill wishes would come to North America, and we talk Alfa Romeos, Jimnys and other compact pick up trucks.39:18: And of course, the famous Lighting Round puts Jill through her pacesWhere else can you find Jill writing and talking about cars (and trucks, of course!):Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jillciminillo/https://www.instagram.com/girlinthetrunk/TikTok: @jillciminilloPick Up Truck + SUV Talk: https://pickuptrucktalk.comThe Consumer Guide Car Stuff Podcast and radio show (airs Sundays on WCPT 820 AM Chicago): https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/car-stuff-podcast/id1486182255DriveChicago.comJill’s own YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@jillciminilloThe #cardujour hashtag on any social medium

On this week’s episode, Ike and Steve are breaking down some Land Rover news, and talking about some relevant adjacent stories. (1:22) BYD is making a “Budget Defender”, and the guys talk about what that means. Will it come to the US? We’re not convinced. (5:13) Emme Hall won the Gambler event at the Mint 400 in her off-road Miata, Buddy. Has that lit the fire under Steve and Abigail’s tail feathers to start on their off-road Miata project? (8:00) Steve gives us yet another status update on the Freelander, and while we think the transmission is fixed, there’s a sound in the rear axle that’s got us worried… (10:46) Ike sent some new old stock brake drums to the CKD boys in Australia, and bought a suitcase in which to send them with a friend as a carry on. We bet that was a fun flight. (12:23) Ike updates us on the Prince Phillip TDCI 110 Defender that recently went to auction and sold for £123,000. They then talk about the real costs involved in bringing a vehicle over to the US that’s not legal to import, and figure that £123k is probably a steal at the end of the day. (15:14) We revisit an old segment we like to call “Rover Faux Pas”, or, “What Grinds Ike’s Gears”. This is where Ike airs some of his pet peeves when it comes to classic Rovers, and some of these are huge red flags you’ll want to look for when buying an old Land Rover.  This includes an ill-fitting soft top (tuck in your flaps!), and (18:40) unsecured wiring harnesses, and (20:52) using the wrong fasteners, be it unnecessarily long rivets, and the overuse of Philips head screws. (23:48) Rounding out this week’s episode, Steve and Ike have a Tip Top Tool Tip on Tire Repair Tools and kits, and everyone needs to have some of these tools on board their truck. We break down sidewall plugs (“gummy pipe cleaners”) and how they work, the mushroom style plugs, screw in stud repair kits. Steve talks when to patch and when to put on the spare, and even goes into detail on repairs that require taking the tire off the wheel and some things to know. (34:16) Then the guys wrap up the show, and mention that you can watch all of our episodes on YouTube if you prefer to watch that way.Links: BYD Budget Defender  https://insideevs.com/news/656716/byd-budget-g-wagon-rival/

After breaking down the news, Steve has a Tip Top Tool Tip all about 3D printing, and he gives us the ins and outs of what to consider when incorporating this super cool tool into your restoration process.

Last, we have our listener’s most requested segment: Famous Land Rover Owner of the Week. During this segment, we talk about the one and only Taika Waititi and his love for his Range Rover Vogue.

For many, the Ineos Grenadier is a callback to the Defender of old. But can it live up to Defender's iconic history? This week, we are joined by Mercedes Lilienthal of Crankshaft Culture. An automotive journalist who has been published by Forbes, NY Times, Tread Magazine, and countless other publications, Mercedes knows her stuff when it comes to cars. She had the opportunity to drive the Ineos Grenadier on two separate occasions, and has a lot to say about its place in the market, its impressive off roading features, and its capabilities. We dive in deep to talk about her experience driving with Ineos on Isle of Skye in Scotland with the production models last month, and whether the Ineos has a shot at being a Defender/Jeep/Bronco competitor.

Check out our Patreon for a special bonus episode with Mercedes and Andy Lilienthal, as they dive in to their passion for Mitsubishis (specifically Pajeros)!

In this episode, we welcome a special guest all the way from the land down under, Geoff Lewis from Seriously Series in Australia! But before that, they dive into the world of Japanese K cars with Land Rover body kits and review the latest and greatest kit called the “Dafunder”. This innovative creation is designed for Honda N vans, magically transforming them into something that kind of resembles the new Defender. They may not be as great as a Little D, but who cares? We're loving them just the same!

Finally, it's time to bring on our good friend and fellow Land Rover nerd, Geoff Lewis. He's a creator, enthusiast, and all around knowledgeable Rover guy, which is perfect because we couldn't find anyone else who would tolerate our tomfoolery. We'll be talking about his upcoming screening of his film "Road to Ruin" at the Land Rover 75th Anniversary in Cooma this April, which we're sure is going to be the event of the century for everyone except Steve (its killing him that he can’t go). Get ready for a deep dive into Rovers of all kind, including Geoff's own vehicles. By the end of this conversation, you'll know more about Freelanders, Utes, and Stage Ones than you ever wanted to know…

As is tradition for the Pangolin 4x4 team, the motley crew of Ike, Jenna, Linus, Maddi, and Steve Francis embarked on their annual holiday desert excursion. This year’s trip included numerous locations throughout the Nevada desert, down into Death Valley, through numerous mines and ghosttowns. Hear their tales of rescuing a couple in a broken down sprinter van with some less than reliable welding tools. The team tries to recall how many times they needed a winch to get themselves unstuck, and a harrowing descent into Silver Peak. Leave it to Jenna and Maddi to befriend the owner of a menagerie of animals, including camels, pigs, birds, emus and more. Hear all about Ike’s disdain at taking a mud bath near Diana’s Punch Bowl, and Steve’s near-death experience with some faulty headlight wiring.
