Kingflower (a.k.a. Garrett Langebartels) is the person responsible for connecting me with a few guests on this show including: Descolada, Arselia Kent, Kayla Phillips, Andrew Pelletier, and Devin Hopwood. We talk about how recording engineering requires education and time, and the importance of feeling something rather than over explaining it.

Kingflower is a 5-piece American Indie Rock/Americana band from Indianapolis, IN. The band formed in 2020 when producer and principle songwriter Garrett Langebartels assembled the likes of Justin Langebartels, Steve Bradley, Tommy Travis, and Shea Farmer. Their collective love for atmospheric Indie Rock/Americana (bands like Wilco, Ben Howard, the National, the War on Drugs and Radiohead) created a perfect universe for the reflective and melancholic midwestern songwriting Garrett offers.

Over the past months of putting out songs from my new album (LAKE), Layne encouraged me to be more vulnerable and share more of myself on the internet.

Realizing that I needed help in this area, she offered to help me open up by co-hosting a podcast episode in hopes that I'd drop my coy facade and share my real self.

Sometimes it's very hard for me to talk about my songs, because they come from a place inside of me that often lacks articulation. I'm so so grateful that Layne took the time to listen to my music for its own sake, and as a means to know me more. I hope you do the same, and enjoy the podcast :)

Kayla Phillips is a singer songwriter splitting her time between Indianapolis and Boston for school. She's currently in the process of releasing her debut record (which I got to hear and it's great) which comes out on May 19th. You can hear her latest single "Peace" on April 21st!

In this interview Kayla and I talk through the role of grief through songwriting, and why someone would make a full album in a world telling you to release a slow drip of singles.

Andrew Pelletier is a songwriter, teacher, and composer who lives right down the street from me in LA and I didn't even know it!

Andrew has been making music of his own since high school and continues to make a daily practice of writing music, teaching others, and playing in other people's projects.

In this episode Andrew and I circle the topic of doing something everyday to get a little bit better. I think he's done a great job at this, and if you like his vibe I suggest you check out his new EP in April under his band name "Fur Trader" (which is Pelletier in French)

Cimo Fränkel is a very special singer, songwriter, & producer I met at a recent SoFar Sounds event. With a decade of experience in the music business, he’s already written a ton of hits, like the multi-Platinum:  ‘Sex’ by Cheat Codes & Kris Kross  Yellow Claw’s iconic smash single ‘Shotgun’

Cimo started experimenting with music production at the age of 15 and has been compared to the likes of The Weeknd with influences drawing from pop greats including Michael Jackson and Huey Lewis. I'd compare him to orange juice because he's sweet and worth having in your life.

Please enjoy this conversation with Cimo Fränkel!

Kyle and I met around 2019 at a house concert in Santa Barbara. Kyle is a top 10 Billboard songwriter and performer, led the band Beware of Darkness, appeared on Conan, and at the Reading and Leeds Festival.  When I saw Kyle's instagram post saying he was publishing his book "Thank God For Depression", I immediately reached out to him to see if he'd be willing to talk about his evolution as a creative, and his relationship with depression. I/m really proud of this episode: I think we take about really important things like presence, and overcoming resistance so that ultimately you might be able to dodge some of the challenges we've pushed through.

Meekoh is a songwriter with a lovely voice that I met here in Los Angeles at  Lower Deck Sessions. Meekoh and I are both a part of the Breedlove Guitars family - he spent a lot of time living in Bend, OR where Breedlove Guitars is based, and has been living in LA since 2017 writing and putting on shows of his own called "Under the Pine".

I find Meekoh to be incredibly earnest, and kind to others (a trait you don't always see paired with great talent). You'll hear us talk a lot about a music video he made during covid while floating down the Deschutes river in Bend OR, and I highly recommend you check it out!

Please enjoy this conversation with Meekoh!  You can hear a new song he wrote with his wife toward the end of the episode!

The Social is a four-piece band I saw recently at The Resident in Downtown LA. The four band members are Keaton, Alexander, Tommy, and Markie, and they were playing after my friend James Spaite who was also an early podcast guest. What really stood out to me about these guys was the band’s energy along with Keaton’s screaming/singing ability.

In this episode we talk about what makes a good front-man for a band, how we’re all really bad audience members, and going on writing retreats to get a lot of songs made in a very short amount of time.

You can hear their song “Any Other Way” later in the episode, enjoy!
