Friday Night BeerBlog: Recent Episodes

Lesley McShane

Welcome to the Friday Night BeerBlog! When I started my blog in 2019 it was my practice to read it for my husband, Mike, and look for a sign of approval before hitting PUBLISH. As quarantine wore on and I started my first podcast, The New Old You, I decided it would be fun to use the podcasting tool to record our Friday night sessions because the conversations can get lively, especially if three beer Mike shows up. I also thought it may be a way to get extend my audience because "some people just don't like to read". But maybe they'll listen. At least that's what we're hoping for. So kick back with any beer of choice and sit out back with us as we record the Friday Night BeerBlog.

On this week's episode we're talking about how COVID kicked the McShane house in the ass this week. Not fun. But it sounds like many people have been in the same boat.

No COVID for 22 months and then suddenly. But luckily our bush with it came post-vaccine and post-booster. I am thankful for that.

We hope you all stay safe and well out there.

In the first FNBB of the New Year, we're going deep.

I'm asking if the ego is keeping us living in the Matrix and if we take the red pill we are suddenly able to hear our intuition and see all the possibilities available to us.

Yeah, like I said....Deep.

It's Dry January for me to combat the sogginess I felt at the end of the holiday season, so bear with me. Doing my best!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

SEE YOU IN 2022 - SORRY HAD TO SAY THAT.

This is the LAST official Friday Night BeerBlog of 2021. And I have a guest sitting in me tonight in the place of Mike. Cate is with me while Mike spends some time with his mom. And that is where he needs to be.

Don't be surprised if Mike and I jump in here and do a wrap up, but this is the last official.

Thank you for another year of support.  All 5 of you. You know who you are.

Sending lots of love for the holiday season. Let's go kick some ass in 2022.

We just got back from the 2021 Cyclocross National Championships where Mike aka The Pickle finished 6th in the country. You'd think he'd be happy, especially since his goal was to finish in single digits. But no, immediately he wished he had done better to be on the podium of top 5 of the race. Always a bridesmaid.

We talk about needing to celebrate all intention goals and not get down about not reaching outcome goals. You can only grow that way.

We hope you enjoy this Cyclocross Nationals rehash and thank you for all your good wishes and congrats for Mike's awesome finish.

And Happy 5th Birthday to MILEWIDE BEER CO. whose 5th Anniversary DDH NEIPA we are drinking tonight.

All the best to all 5 of you - LLM

Tonight is a split version of the FNBB - Mike is in North Carolina to race and I am back at the homestead with the pups. But that hasn't kept us from our weekly duty of coming to you with the Friday Night BeerBlog.

This week I am talking about how when you ghost someone in your teens and twenties that is mean, but ghosting in adulthood is just plain rude. And I know from experience because I have been ghosted by the same person TWICE in the last month.

The message is clear. Don't say YES if you don't mean YES. If you mean NO, just say NO. There are no egos here to be wounded, just people to get pissed off if you treat them like their time doesn't mean anything. Wow, did I say that out loud.

Anyway, we hope you enjoy this week's Friday Night BeerBlog. We're here every week for all 5 of you that listen.

Make sure that you FOLLOW and SUBSCRIBE - I have to say that. It's in my contract.

Woah! It's been a week, but I've been thinking a lot about this week's blog subject all week because last week I waited for Mike for nearly 2 hours before we were about to record the FNBB. So this week I just had to write about how I am lumped in with Mike and his tardiness - arriving everywhere on "McShane Time".

We hope you listened and if you did you need a reward. If you dig our kind of thing - please FOLLOW or SUBSCRIBE. All six that listened last week, you are on a pathway to heaven.

The actual blog is at my website https://llmcshane.com. Go check that out if you indeed read.

My serious podcast is The New Old You and comes out every Wednesday. You'll probably enjoy it more, just sayin'.

Thanks for reading this and we'll be back next week, if you're lucky.

It's my third FNBB in a row about social media. Mike thinks it is a mini-series like The Thorn Birds, I told him he is old and it is more like a limited series like Bridgerton. We agree to disagree.

This week I'm talking about how I was taken aback by a message from Instagram this week about how a comment that I made on someone else's post 2 weeks ago has been removed. I was mortified and couldn't think if truly I had said something that fell into their hate speech guidelines. But when I read the comment I asked for a review and am sure that someone "reported" the comment out of error.

But still, the thought that I did something wrong or broke the rules, shook me to the core. I've still got a lot of work to do in the people pleasing category.

Thanks for listening - FOLLOW, RATE, and REVIEW - it's the least you can do, right?! haha. JK. Please do it though.

On this week's Friday Night BeerBlog, we're talking about the bad side of social media. Last week I was saying that we need to get up to speed on social media and this week I'm saying it that it is ultimately up to us seasoned veterans to protect our young sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, grands from the ugly side of such an amazing format.

I felt a calling to talk about this this week after hearing from a friend that his nephew had taken his life after the prodding of faceless people over the internet. That just ain't right.

Protect the young ones. Make sure they know that they are perfect the way they are and that they are loved. Because love isn't earned, it is freely given.

Make sure to FOLLOW this podcast and RATE and REVIEW so that more people hear that these discussions are happening.

On this week's The New Old You, Mary Glover is talking about Functional Fitness here:

And this next week I'll be talking to Paula Hensley and her mom, Peggy Tojo about Peggy's husband internment in a Japanese Camp after the break of WWII. You won't want to miss it.

Y'all!! I had a real, live job interview this week. I haven't interviewed for a job in over 20 years. But I didn't sweat it. I decided to let the answers flow, and it worked out for me, even though I haven't heard about the job.

I felt that answering from my heart was the ultimate way to give truth to all my answers. I hate preconceived answers to interview questions - speak from the heart. They'll never see it coming!

It could be the @milewidebeerco beer talking, but know yourself and the rest will follow.

Happy Friday everybody!

I did a thing and took my own advice!! I'll let you listen to find out what it was, but it is quite the phenomenon when you shut up long enough to listen to your own wise words - the words you often share with others instead of yourself.

It's been a great week and my heart is light as you'll hear about in the podcast.

I hope you enjoy and then you take a second to rate or review this podcast. We have a blast doing it and now we have some return on investment to work on. :)

This week's episode is brought to you by Milewide Beer Co. (https://www.milewidebeer.com/). If you are ever in Louisville, KY and are looking for an amazing local brew, give them a go. you won't be disappointed. Make sure to mention Mike and Lesley, just to hear them say, "Who??"

I make a lot of fun of Mike for the workout rut that he does every morning, without the realization that pretty much everything we do is part of a rut that we have put together for our everyday life.

When we had to move outside of our rut, life was kinda chaotic and we yearned for that old rut. We needed normal and familiar.

Change is good. But there is nothing like that warm blanket of the rut to keep you feeling safe.

If you enjoy our little podcast diddy, make sure to FOLLOW so that you will be made aware of new episodes. But you can pretty can rely on the rut that this podcast and blog will be available every Friday night.

Mike and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary this week. I've had several young people and couples ask how we have lasted this long. I am quick to say to althought being married can really suck sometimes, I am married to my best friend. We are a team - we succeed together and we fail together.

Finding someone who becomes your family without being actual blood is a gift. And he is mine.

I swore to Mike I wouldn't get mushy in the actual blog/podcast, so I'm doing it here. He'll never read this. :)

We moved our 22 year old daughter to Los Angeles over the last week. Things got real, real fast. She'll do fine, but we left her some advice before we left and the main advice was - Follow your gut, listen to your intuition. They will serve you well.

This is advice we can all follow at any age in any location.

On this week's FNBB, I am recounting our trip to Lake Norris with friends and their friends who we had never met. I talk about how it was a lot like summer camp when we were kids - you don't know each other at first, but little by little you open up and even get a little vulnerable before you have to say goodbye at the end of the week.

Making new friends as an adult is not something that is done on a regular basis, but highly recommended. There are so many people out there with so many stories and great things to share. Don't close yourself off.

Thanks for listening tonight. As always, we appreciate it and  look forward to recording from Los Angeles next Friday night.

Post-pandemic will not be anything close to Pre-pandemic. It's like trying to get things back into a packaged box after you've opened it. It's not happening. This week's blog is the encouragement to fight the overwhelm with sitting in the moment and even, dare I say it, meditating to connect yourself with the here and now.

There are so many things around us that we have no control over that we spend so many waking hours worrying about, but with good quiet time we can learn to sit with the uncomfortable and let it wash over us instead of controlling us.

Call me woo-woo, but I've been meditating 3 years and it is a life raft when things get crazy. I'm not perfect and I have to remind myself to rely on it, but when it's there, it's a godsend.

On tonight's Friday Night BeerBlog we are discussing how I let loose of my purse strings and hired some experts to clean my windows. It was a big move because I had tried to cut financial corners and do it myself last year only to spend 5x the time and less than 10% of the result that they got. And the difference is amazing.

Sometimes you just gotta let got of that "I can do that" emotion and get somebody who knows what they are doing to get it done for you. It's painful, but helpful to spread the wealth in the end.

It's a lesson my thrifty self continues to learn continue to learn over and over. Let go Wilma!

It snowed on April 1st. I freaked out, but realized that the weather was just having a little setback. I'm no stranger to setbacks. They happen to me all the time. And it would be easy to give up - the big snooze monster would love that, but you just have to get up and go again.

On this week's reading of the Friday Night BeerBlog, I talk about the constant yearly annoyance of taxes, especially for the self-employed. I'm lucky because Mike does our taxes, but that doesn't let me off the hook. I make sure to have snacks and beer at the ready.

Our downloads of the FNBBs are down, so I'm contemplating not doing the Friday night blog podcast read, but I need to hear from you. Do you enjoy to hear us read the blog or no? It's fun to do it with Mike, but I want to give the audience what they want. Let me know on my website llmcshane.com. Hey Friends - It's a rare Friday Night BeerBlog on a Saturday night. There's a lot happening in the McShane house right now with work, no air conditioning, and health problems of some family members, so when I sat down to write this week's blog I attached myself to this idea - that I am smack dab in the middle of what life has to offer.  We went to a baby shower for the first child of some friends and the daughter of one of other friend is getting married in a few weeks.

It feels strange that Mike and I have been married 25 years, but 1996 was just yesterday. Time feels like it's bending. Events seem to be so close, but they happened long ago.

I have deduced that we are in the Wednesday of life. We're on the hump, smack dab in the middle, and that is just fine with me. Thursday, stay away.

As always, thanks for listening - it means a lot. And if you've enjoyed PLEASE SUBSCRIBE and Share.

I'll be back on Wednesday with another podcast - until then.

Hey - Lesley here - Tonight the Friday Night BeerBlog is about Overcommitted in many levels. To other people, to ourselves and then we overcommit our children. Are we move back into post-covid life, we need to re-evaluate what is ESSENTIAL. What activities do we HAVE to do and what can we decide to leave behind. Maybe there are some we still want to do, but we just need to slow their roll.

Thanks for listening - it's been a strange week as I've been readjusting my own commitments. I apologize for a jumbled blog mess, but the week got away, but the message is pretty clear.

On this week's FNBB - Mike and I are on the road  packing up our youngest and moving her stuff back to KY. She is graduating from college. It's the time of graduation and we offer congratulations to all of those parents out there who are truly sending their kids off into the great, blue beyond. This is where they all learn that the things they endured in their school years gets exponentially  harder in this next phase.

Hey all! Well, I'm in Eastern Kentucky all ready to do my first Adventure Race. I'm doing it in a team of 2 other women and we will be paddling, trekking, and mountain biking to find up to 20 check points at Greenbo State Park.

I was just going to go with the flow up until a week ago and I figured I'd better prepare at least a little. And then my ADMIN side took over and I started prepping as much as I could. Because I KNOW, that if I don't prepare and prepare well, that tomorrow will absolutely suck.

And that is the same for anything, I mean anything, you want to do well in or at - sports, life, other. A well-prepared person will always do better than someone who is going on pure talent. Even Muhammad Ali was always first to admit that training sucked, but it made him who he was.

Seeing your kids move into young love and all that comes with it is hard, especially because we remember what that meant. Hey now, these are my kids - I was referring to holding hands, snuggling, and smooching every now and then, right?! And in Cate and Chris's case, the annoying "BARNACLE!" movement.

Parenting  humans entering the adulting phase isn't easy, just like parenting infants, toddlers, kids, pre-teens, and teens is hard. Damn. When is it going to get easier? But these are the days when we as parents need to just keep our mouths shut if we ever want to see them again.

I keep trying to remind myself how I felt at this age. And if I remember correctly, I didn't give a rat's ass about how my mom felt about pretty much anything. So mum is the word.

The Hallmark Calendar is telling us that Sunday is Mother's Day. It's time to take our guilt and cram all the love and attention we haven't given her over the past 364 into this one day.

I kid, but as we grow up we don't celebrate our moms enough. We are too busy seeing her as Wonder Woman with a Lightsaber. There is no way this super hero would need anything form us to be the amazing person she is. Then we get older and we come to realize that she is just a human, like us. She needs love and appreciation every day, not just one day a year.

Mike and are talking about all the things and gearing up to spend the weekend celebrating our moms because we are lucky enough to have both of them.

Mike is out of town, but that isn't stopping us from doing the Friday Night BeerBlog. I had had had to include Mike this week because the blog concerns him. We're talking about the terrible confusion over MASK-WEARING. If you are fully vaxxed, where do you have to wear it? Where do you not have to wear it?

We've made it this far and I'm afraid to get yelled at for not wearing mine. Mike wasn't so lucky and he tells us all about it.

Life is weird and seeing people in Target not wearing a mask is weirder.

In this week's Friday Night BeerBlog - Mike and Lesley ruminate on the year anniversary of the Coronavirus and how we are all used to change, but in a gradual way and how the Coronavirus brought complete and total change in virtually one day. It has all been a lot to deal with in one year.

Some things considered normal will return to normal, some with return but only in time, and some will never go back. They are changed forever.

We're hoping you are all ready to turn the page to what this next year will bring - hopefully lots of love and happiness.

Till Wednesday and till next Friday. If you enjoy the FNBB, please SUBSCRIBE, RATE and REVIEW this podcast.

This week on the Friday Night BeerBlog, Lesley delivers her Megan Thee Stallion manifesto on how we, as women, need to work on accepting compliments and more importantly, work on complimenting ourselves.

Own your power and remember who you are - you are still that girl you always were.

We hope you have enjoyed the podcast version of the blog. You can always read the blog version at my website https://llmcshane.com

In this week's Friday Night BeerBlog, we are celebrating the 26th anniversary of our first date and reminisce about how when you start dating someone new, you date their friends as well. I have been friends with a lot of same people over the last 26 years as well, which make it all of our anniversary.

I've grown up in my adult life with many of the people I met on that first date and in that year that Mike and I dated and consider myself very lucky to have found all of them.  I pay tribute to all of them tonight.

You can follow me on my website https://llmcshane.com or at my instagram @llmcshane for some daily motivational vibes.  I will be back with another New Old You podcast next Wednesday.

Thank you for listening - Peace!

On this week's Friday Night BeerBlog, Lesley reads to Mike her blog about how we are all in the same CoronaWorld space together and share this common thread, no matter who we are or where we are - and we have that connection forever. This moment was no more felt than when Lesley and a friend shared a much needed hug this week.  (Hugs are my favorite, btw)

No person is above needing love and support from those around them. I don’t care how strong you think a person is, everybody, and I mean EVERYbody needs support, especially now.

Go out and spread some love and understanding and we'll see you back for the Friday Night BeerBlog next week. Check out the actual typed up version at https://llmcshane.com

On tonight's reading of the Friday Night BeerBlog, Lesley delivers a soliloquy about how the people that stole Mike's identity do indeed suck. Life is hard enough right now to have to deal with having the right the wrong done by other people.

As usual, the original blog can be read at https://llmcshane.com/?p=302

Have a great weekend!

This is the very first "reading" and edit of the Friday Night Beer Blog - Podcast Version. Some people may not like to read blogs so I have decided to record a reading of them, which usually happens just with my husband Mike while we are drinking beer on Friday night.

This week's blog was about the albeit stressful migration of my old website to a new platform and domain and how that process was an analogy for the migration that I'm currently undertaking in my own personal life. As Maggie Smith in Keep Moving says, "Accept that sometimes dismantling has to happen before you can build."
