Welcome to this new series of the Event Show we are lucky to speak with leaders in the world of major events, as we enter an exciting window of opportunity across our industry. The purpose of the show is to give a voice to our industry, to hear from influential leaders as to how they are going about their work, and so we can take things away and apply it in our world. So in this chat, I’m joined by a popular figure in our industry, who has been heavily involved in an event most of us will know.
Karen Clydesdale is 'Head of Customer Experience and Customer Relationship Management’ at Tennis Australia, leading a team that has been producing amazing things at the Australian Open, and also across the many events and experiences that they provide.
This is an extremely interesting chat as Karen has been leading the way with many new ways of working, how experiences are designed and delivered, and how to keep evolving what they do.
We cover the importance of ‘the experience’, and having a very strong vision, strategic pillars and guiding principles to guide what you are focusing on.
We also talk about the ongoing evolution of the Aus Open, in providing experiences for different groups of people, the customers, the fans/patrons, the players, participants, and partners, and also the workforce - and why that is important.
We even touch on all the levels of value, for before, during and after an event, with the critical physical and digital interactions.
We also learn how Karen’s team measure progress and applies the insights from these measures.
We also hear some of Karen's valuable personal experiences, including some really practical and important tips and tricks we can all use!
So there is so much to take away from this chat, from a strategic level, through to the day-to-day ways of working.
Karen has a wealth of experience and is using that to make a real difference in the experiences she provides.
We do hope you enjoy the Show, and as always please drop me a line at andrew@andrewoloughlin.com to see if I can help you with the design or redesign of your event experiences, or in developing the strategy that will make your event, the most valuable experience it can be, for your audiences, and for you.
But for now please enjoy this special show, with the amazing Karen Clydesdale from Tennis Australia…

Welcome to this special Event Show which is a bit of a comeback special, almost two years to the day that we did a coronavirus special to support each other as our industry was shut down, in those weeks that the likes in the Grand Prix were cancelled, today the Grand Prix is back stronger than ever, as our many events across Australia.
But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing, and while the opportunities are back, there are as always some scenarios to be particularly conscious of, and be thinking about. And as I was recently asked by our friends and colleagues in New Zealand to share our experiences as events remerged in Australia, so that our Kiwi friends, and those around Australia and other parts of the world might benefit from some of the observations we’ve seen and have experiences over the past couple of months - and perhaps to give you the benefit of foresight, we wanted to share what we’ve seen occur, and what may be coming your way.
So in this chat I’m joined by Geordie Miles from Spark Event Group, Georgie Stayches from Fetching Events and Communications, and Ben Muldoon from Race Roster, and around 100 guests, who all gave us their interesting and diverse perspectives on what they’ve seen, and what we might all be looking out for.
I do hope you enjoy the Show, and can take something away to use in your work, and as always please drop me a line at andrew@andrewoloughlin.com if I can help you with the design or relaunch of your event experiences, or in developing the event strategy to make your come back, the best comeback it can be.

I’m really pleased to be able to share this follow up discussion that I had with Tim Oberg, a previous Event Show guest and the man who brought what has become a global success story, parkrun, to this part of the world.
This is a great opportunity to understand the experience that parkrun provides, and how it goes about providing it.
A participant experience which ultimately has had an immense influence on many people, influencing more people to sign up and show up again, and again, week after week until they become evangelists for parkrun, and start to bring others people with them - all of which has been a big part of the success of parkrun.
So, I do hope you can follow these steps on a parkrunners journey and apply them to your experiences.

Welcome to the Sport Experience show - where we are speaking with world-leading experts in the world of sport and active experiences, sharing their ideas and giving you some inspiration and meaningful info to walk away with and use in your work.
This new series is exploring the influence of the experiences we provide, as I think we all agree that the experiences we provide have a major influence on people, and ultimately determine whether we are successful in our work.
And so… I am super excited to share this discussion I had with... Mat Johnson, who is without doubt one of the leading thinkers I have had the pleasure of working with, and pioneered the design and oversaw the delivery of some of the most influential global ‘live experience’ campaigns in recent times.
Now based in the US, Mat spent 20 or so years leading the development of NIKE events and active experiences, driving amazing experiences and value for their consumers, and also the brand behind them, MJ has a lot for us to learn from.
It was really fascinating to unpack what went on, and why he approaches the work with the passion that he does. And I’ve got to say, this a really valuable chat on so many levels… so, sooo much to take away from this show... giving us all something important to things think about. I do hope you enjoy this chat with MJ!
And if you want to reach out as you design - or redesign and rebuild your fan or participant experiences, I’d love to hear what your creating. Just drop me a line at andrew @ experiencedesign.global or check out sportexperiencedesign.com + sportexperiencedesign.com/podcast

To kick off, have a think about the elements you need to influence in your event experiences?
Some questions for you to ask, and answer.
For you, and it may be valuable to ask these with your team!
What is the event experience you want to provide?
What people do you have in mind, to be influenced by your event?
What people will they want to bring with them? What people will influence them, whether they see it, sign up and show up?
How will time influence the experience? What are the key milestones, and the influential moments within that experience?
What will be the influence of places, what locations and spaces will you place them in?
Let's unpack these elements and then bring them all together, as you design your event experience!

Welcome to these special Event Show sessions, where we are sharing our best advice on how to design or redesign your event experiences, so that you can get more people to sign up and show up again.
We all had a pretty challenging year last year, but things are starting to ramp up again, and while there are lots of things we all need to achieve, and different ways of doing it, ultimately what it comes down to is the experiences that we provide, as that will decide whether people want to show up, what they think and say about your work, and whether they want to come back again.
So in this series of special short sessions, we are walking you through an Experience Design process, what it is, how you can use it, and why it is valuable for you.
This all here to help you to have the success we all deserve and I hope you can walk away and use this in your work. After all, the experiences that we provide will matter the most, and will ultimately decide if we are successful in our work.
I hope you enjoy these sessions on Experience Design for Event people!

The Event Show is celebrating success stories in our world of events, speaking with influential leaders, sharing their experiences and giving you some inspiration and meaningful info to walk away with and use in your work.
So I’m eager to share this discussion I had with Tim Oberg, who 10 years ago brought the parkrun movement to this part of the world, and has driven it to huge success. With over 600,000 parkruns completed across almost 400 events each and every week before COVID hit, this is a fascinating example of the influence our events can have on communities, and in building communities of like-minded people around them.
This a really valuable chat on many levels looking at the journey of a parkrunner, the moments of influence and the different elements of value. Parkrun has done what we all aspire to, of shifting people from being ‘Aware’ of us, to ‘Active’ with us, and then ‘Advocates’ for us. Where our events have such a tight relationship with our participants that they become part of their lives, not just showing up again, but bringing others with them.
Tim also gives us a valuable insight into the focus behind the scenes, staying true to the core concept, but evolving where needed, and how ‘keeping it simple’ has enabled the growth across 22 countries and seen over 9 million parkruns globally.
I do hope you enjoy this chat with Tim, and, if you want to reach out as you design - or redesign and rebuild your events, please do just let me know.
This Event Show LIVE focused on innovation in event experiences & new ways of looking at our industry!
A huge thanks to those that joined us, and to...

There were a few connection challenges... but we worked through it and had a great discussion, so we do hope you can tune in and walk away with valuable thoughts to use in your work.

Our current Event Show podcast series is exploring new ways to design experiences, so I’m super excited to share this discussion I had with the Yellow Tux guy, aka Jesse Cole, Founder of the Savanna Bananas and Fans First Entertainment.
Jesse is a brilliant guest for many reasons, he has been achieving some amazing things, attracting millions of fans, creating an award-winning and inspired team, and now owns one of America’s fastest-growing businesses.
So I think this a really valuable chat on many levels giving us all something important to things think about, as you look to design, or redesign your event experiences.
And to me, if there is one thing that stands out from Jesse’s brilliant mantras, is the belief that I share, in that what we do is all about how we make people feel.
The EXPERIENCE we provide to our people, fans, participants, sponsors, or our team and everyone behind the scenes, is what will determine how successful you are, and, what you get back from your work.
So, soooo much to take away from this show... I do hope you enjoy this chat with Jesse.

Event Design is critical right now, as we all look to create or re-create our event experiences. And while there is a lot of creativity in event people, it is surprising how few tools and techniques are shared that we can use to design our event experiences.
So it was brilliant to speak with a world leader in Event Design, Roel Frissen, about the Event Design Handbook and the Canvas, which has been bought and downloaded by thousands globally across our industry.
Over recent times we've been exploring the leading approaches to use from our world of events, and across other worlds, and this merging of Design Thinking and Experience Design will help you lead the way in your work.
The Event Design Handbook can change the way you think about how events, and shows the way to re-design your world on just one sheet of paper using the EventCanvas.
If your looking to get ahead and reemerge as a more influential event professional, or to design new innovative experiences, this show is for you.
Please tune in to hear how you can be creating more successful events, and having more success as an event professional!

As event organisers we are experience providers, and while there is a lot of talk about the importance of ‘engaging experiences’, there is not a lot of guidance on how to create and nurture them.
This Shows guests are Bob Rossman and Mat Duerden, two of the worlds leading experts in the growing world of ‘Experience Design’, and as a passionate advocate for this approach in our work, I was particularly excited to have them on the show (see if you can spot it!).
As world-leading experts in ‘XD’ they recently co-authored a brilliant book ‘Designing Experiences’, rated in the Top 3 of its type and an essential resource for event designers.
In this show, we unpack the mindsets and tools with which I think you will find valuable to apply in your work.

It’s a virus-free 'Event Show' this time, with the purpose of igniting your thinking during the shutdown phase, and some ideas to help you relaunch your role in our new event world.
This chat is with Ben Muldoon whom I sat down 'pre CV' to explore his observations, and as a central hub in the world of events, Ben offers plenty of thoughts for you to walk away with.
From experiences with global event leader IMG, to the rise of Tough Mudder, and now at the hub of our industry with Register Now, he tunes in to the many things happening across our industry.
Ben has observed some of the common features of events that are succeeding, and how hustling and collaboration as the way to get results. We hear about what is driving our audiences, the trends in our industry, and the things that we need to be focusing on. The role of data, sustainability, technology and storytelling, and how Ben’s team are leading the way – with some specific opportunities that you may want to tap into.

‘Unprecedented’ is the word right now, and as the Event Show is about giving a voice to event people, we’ve reached out to some leaders in our industry, to hear how they and their teams are feeling, in what has been a shocking week for our industry.
This show has been an attempt to take stock, share some perspectives from our peers, with a view to offering some sort of support to us all.
You will hear from people who have been on the front line of it all, including Matt Bisset from Register Now, normally known for helping us register hundreds of thousands of participants, but now helping many of us navigate through cancellations and refunds this past week.
We also get a valuable insight on insurance matters, from Stu Hartley of EventCover, who offers us an update on where many are at, and some important advice to us all.
As does Geordie Miles from Spark Event Group, who represents the voice of many in our industry as a business owner, and one of our largest workforce suppliers in Event Workforce Group.
We then reach out to Chris Robb, who has been a leader in our industry, often specifically in dealing with risks, and the adversity that we face in challenging times.
So we hope this Show gives you some support in your lives at this time.
Our next Show will be looking ahead at solutions, so please tune in to learn of some of the opportunities that may be out there for us all right now!
This Event Show explores the success of another record-breaking Australian Open!
As an inspiring emerging leader in our industry TA 'Head of Experiences', Shannon Davis takes us through how the Open has been ‘designing with heart’, and evolved from Tennis Tournament to Lifestyle Experience.
The Event Show is also all about hearing the stories of our people, and Shannon’s journey has been an interesting one, from San Diego, to across Europe and into Melbourne Park, along with the shift from Project Manager to 'provider of joyful experiences'.
So please listen in for an intriguing insight into the role of an experience designer in events, the art, science and magic of it all. We explore so much in this chat, from the change in the nature of our work, to the specific strategies, and mindsets, that Shannon and her team have taken as they have led the evolution of the Open, and arguably, our industry.
As the podcast is all about giving a voice to our industry, so in this challenging time, we think it’s important to reflect on our achievements, to hear from each other, and to keep looking ahead to what we all can achieve in the future.
We hope you gain some insights to take away and work with, and we hope you enjoy the chat.
It’s a massively interesting Event Show this week where we go wide and deep around the global sports events industry!
Many of you will know of Hans Westerbeek or will have read his work, with Hans having played a significant role in the education of many in our industry.
We focus heavily on influence in this show, where we go global and local, from elite to grassroots and around the sports event ecosystem, unpacking the opportunities and responsibilities for sport and event providers.
From the need for visionary leadership, the role of money through to the digital transformation that most of our organisations are going through. We examine the need for integrity, changing mindsets, to the role of AI and Climate Change, of data being the new oil, and how we must be gaining meaningful intelligence to guide our passion in sport.
Hans gives us many global and local observations from Real Madrid through to the current T20 World Cup, and as diverse as the Dutch Walking Society and the McGraw Foundation. So many important insights, taken from his global perspective as an academic and practitioner.
We hope you enjoy the show, hopefully giving you some valuable insights to walk away with. And please do share it if you do!

We look at how Melbourne's F1 rates in comparison to other global events, and how it will evolve to retain it's status as one of the Top 3 most attended events on the circuit.
We also delve into how Tom & his team are looking to lead the way, even in some areas you may not expect.
As with each event there are challenges but Tom shares his approach to seeing these as opportunities, including the mindset the AGPC looks for across its’ team.
We also hear about how the AGPC are ensuring there are no ‘hidden secrets', with a focus on 'the fundamentals', and, what we can all look forward to at the 25th Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix.
It’s a great chat, and we hope you enjoy the show.

Tahira Endean is a name that pops up a lot on the Event world. Author, blogger, and Event Producer Based in North America her work and book around ‘Intentional Event Design’ sparked our attention as it connects with what we’ve been going on about recently, that all events should influence us. By that we mean effect people in some way, what we think and do. Tahira gives us some great examples of this mindset in play, and specific questions you can ask of yourself and your team to create transformative events. How to innovate and productively apply your creativity. To create those ‘magical moments’. So please enjoy Tahira, and ep 16 of The Event Show today... And if you do, please share with someone like us!
It’s a rockstar show this week, with leading entrepreneur
Sam Middleton Co-founder & MD of The Music Run
Sam is a self confessed reformed management consultant, now creating rockstar active experiences, that look like this... https://youtu.be/NuRf2nMSQng
Attracting over 250,000 participants, as the name suggests this is the mashing of music and running together to create amazing moments - like the world’s largest finish line party.
Standing out from the crowd in sport and entertainment is not easy, nor is winning the hearts and minds of a youthful audience. But Sam and his team are showcasing how an aspirational vision combined with market insights can create brilliant new experiences.
In this Show you will hear Sam share some generous insights into the things they have learned, and continue to work on in their journey in our inspiring and competitive world of events.
Enjoy!
And if you do get some value from this, we’d appreciate you spreading the word, giving a voice to event people.
This show is a ripper.
Despite failing in his quest to ‘become the next big thing’, Tim Wood has kind of done ok!
A career with Nike, McDonalds, Mattel, et al has led him to become a fantastic advisor to event people wanting to connect with brands like these.
Having worked with Tim, we knew he knew his stuff, and had a lot of insights to offer people like us. We also knew Tim understands the value of a great story, and always has some fun sharing it.
So tune in, this show will help you get on your way to more partnerships, and maybe a few laughs...
As Amanda describes it, ‘this one is so inspiring, an absolute hit and the reason we do this show’.
Enjoy!
And if you do enjoy it please share the word. This show is for people like us, so please pass it on.
If we can help you create more success in events, for you or your team, let us know!
We are back! Series 2 starts with Anthony Everard from Cricket Australia - one of the leading figures in our sports events industry. Trust me, this is a rich half hour chat! You can learn how Anthony led the way in the creating arguably Australian sports most successful products of the last decade, the Big Bash League. Hear how Anthony and his team had to ‘be like pirates’ on the journey to success, and to overcome their doubters. It’s interesting to listen to how Anthony led with a clear vision of what they had to be, and who they were not. As you will hear, Anthony is a visionary and strategic thinker, and has so much to share with us, including an interesting view on the start up stages of one of our first, and leading womens sports products, the ANZ Championship. You will also learn how Anthony is ‘untangling a bowl of spaghetti’ in our sometimes complex, and always competitive event marketplace. We hope you enjoy the show. And if you do, please let us know! We’ve been blown away by the interest so far. And if you can possibly share the show with your networks, this helps us to keep attracting such talented people, to share their time with us, and learnings with you. Enjoy!
