Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. And there are different activities, but the same God works all of them in each person. A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good: to one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge by the same Spirit,to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing between spirits, to another, different kinds of tongues, to another, interpretation of tongues. One and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each person as he wills.
Romans 3:23-24 (CSB)
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

Who am I? What is my identity? These are questions that we often ask. We might be identified as what we do for a living, i.e. I am an engineer or entrepreneur. Maybe our identity is in our faith based on what religion and denomination we follow. The truth is we were all made in God's image and our identity is so much more than any one of these things. At the end of the day, our identity should be in who we are in Him and who God created us to be.

A troubling trend in church today is people walking away, renouncing Christianity because they believe it isn't what they thought it would be, or because they feel like it's fake or a sham. In this week's episode, we look at one such case and talk through their discussion points from a biblical perspective about how we can't lose our salvation and what true relationship with God looks like.

Welcome to Season 3! This season we're getting back to the basics of Christianity. Check out this latest episode as Bill and Matt discuss the differences between Christianity and religion as we normally think about it. Religion is all about rules and what to do and not do, but Christianity is about so much more. It's about the relationship we have with Jesus more than anything else. The truth is we can't be good enough to earn our way into Heaven, but Jesus in His life, death, and resurrection changed everything by giving us a way through relationship with Him.

Welcome to Season 3! This season we're getting back to the basics of Christianity. Check out this latest episode as Bill and Matt discuss some history behind the 7 Deadly Sins, where they come from, and what we can learn from the Bible about the works of the flesh vs. the fruit of the Spirit in comparison.

Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.

Welcome to Season 3! Check out this season opening episode as Bill and Matt discuss an article written about Anne Rice discussing why she left the church. It's so important that we don't allow our beliefs about right and wrong and what the Bible teaches is sin to impact our ability to love on others. It's often when the lines get blurred between rejecting the sin and the sinner that people are pushed away from the church.

Christmas 2021 Episode 1: The Commercialization of Christmas
Welcome to the Simplify Jesus Podcast! This week is the first Christmas episode for 2021, where Bill and Matt discuss the commercialization of Christmas. There are many studies that most of us don't enjoy the commercial side of Christmas that's become all about having to have the latest gizmo or gadget or catching the latest big sale. Instead, Christmas should really be all about time with family and friends and remembering that it is always better to give than to receive.

Interview with Rachel McCants
Welcome to the Simplify Jesus Podcast! We had the privilege to get to talk with Rachel Mccants about her story. Check out this special episode as Rachel shares her story of faith through surviving a brain tumor and how God used that to open doors for her ministry with R Lindsay Unlimited.
Rachel’s Bio:
Rachel holds a Bachelor's Degree in Communication with a minor in English from the University of Texas at Arlington. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, she is a certified Zumba instructor who has a genuine love for dance and fitness. McCants, having been a Christian all her life, lives by the words, “God first and family second.” In 2016, Rachel’s health was impacted in a major way. A brain tumor inspired McCants to create R. Lindsay Unlimited, a business devoted to encourage, inspire, and challenge ladies to discover and raise their self-worth. As a playwright and author, McCants’ goal for the organization is to empower ladies to get standards and keep them and never settle, and to walk in God’s will in all aspects of their lives. She published her first book, Ladies As We Love Ourselves: A 6-Step Program to Self-Worth, in 2019. She also loves to speak and speaks through R. Lindsay Unlimited. She now runs a program called Early Mornings With A Dose Of Jesus, which helps people wake up early and start with Jesus. She also does morning routines to help and encourage quiet time.

Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week we’re busting the myth that Christians can’t have any fun. It’s true that the Bible does tell us things we should and shouldn’t do. Those are meant to help us live life the way God intended it, which is the very best life we can live.
Scripture and other References
Season Memory Verse - Romans 10:9 (CSB)
If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Galatians 5:19-21 (CSB)
Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Genesis 1:28 (CSB)
God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.”
John 2:1-12 - Jesus Turns Water into Wine
Romans 14:13-15 (CSB)
Therefore, let us no longer judge one another. Instead decide never to put a stumbling block or pitfall in the way of your brother or sister. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself. Still, to someone who considers a thing to be unclean, to that one it is unclean. For if your brother or sister is hurt by what you eat, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not destroy, by what you eat, someone for whom Christ died.
Matthew 5:23-24 (CSB)
So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.
Romans 12:16-18 (CSB)
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud; instead, associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Give careful thought to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes. If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 (CSB)
And if someone overpowers one person, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.
Galatians 5:22-23 (CSB)
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.
Proverbs 22:6 (CSB)
Start a youth out on his way; even when he grows old he will not depart from it.
1 Corinthians 15:6 (CSB)
Then he appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep.

Myth #12: Christianity Doesn’t Want You to Think - Interview with Pastor Jacob Conner
Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week we are talking with Pastor Jacob Conner about busting the myth that Christianity doesn’t want you to think. Some people believe that Christianity doesn’t want you to think for yourself, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. The truth of the Bible is we are called to dive in deeper in learning about God and who He is to build that relationship with Him because we could never understand everything there is to know about God.

And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.

For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ.

Myth #11: God and Science Can’t Coexist
Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week is our 2021 Halloween episode where we’re busting the myth that God and science can’t coexist. The truth is that they not only can, but do. Proving phenomena with science shouldn’t disprove God, but rather make us realize all the more how awesome and powerful the God who created all of this is.

Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week we’re busting the myth that faith is a blind leap. The truth is that there’s actually a lot of evidence that what the Bible says is true, that God is really there, and that Jesus is the Son of God as He claimed to be. We put faith day in and day out in things that are much less reliable and proven than God.

Myth #9: A God who loves people wouldn’t let bad things happen
Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week we’re busting the myth that if God really loved us, He wouldn’t let bad things happen to good people. The truth is that bad things happen because God gave us free will. He didn’t make us rule following robots, giving us free will to choose whether or not to love and follow Him. The hope we hold onto as Christians is that God has a bigger plan for us because He loves us, no matter what good or bad may come.

Welcome to Season 2! This week we’re busting the myth that the church is a private club, an exclusive, “members-only” environment. There are lots of reasons out there that people believe make the church exclusive, like how much you’re able to give, having to have your act together, needing to be baptized, being better than everybody else, or understanding everything about God and the Bible. The truth is that Christianity is, and the church should be, inclusive of everyone.
Scripture References
Season Memory Verse - Romans 10:9 (CSB)
If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Mark 12:41-44 (CSB)
Sitting across from the temple treasury, he watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. Then a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. Summoning his disciples, he said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had —all she had to live on.”
Mark 2:17 (CSB)
When Jesus heard this, he told them, “It is not those who are well who need a doctor, but those who are sick. I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
1 Peter 3:21-22 (CSB)
Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not as the removal of dirt from the body, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.
Matthew 20:25-28 (CSB)
Jesus called them over and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them. It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
John 13 - Jesus Washing Disciples’ Feet
Romans 10:14-15 (CSB)
How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.
Luke 2 - Jesus in the Temple as a Child
Job 38 - God’s Response to Job
John 3:16 (CSB)
For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Myth #7: Christianity is one of many ways to Heaven
Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week we’re busting the myth that Christianity is one of many ways to get to Heaven. The way Jesus taught, it can’t work that way. He taught that He is the only way to get to Heaven. Because He taught that way, it can’t work both ways. Either belief in Jesus is the only way to get to Heaven, or it’s not one at all. With all of the historical and spiritual evidence, it becomes clear that He is the one and only way.

Myth #6: Christians are scared of change and new, progressive ideas
Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week we’re busting the myth that Christians are scared of change and new and progressive ideas. While there are some of “the old way” of doing things are better, that doesn’t mean Christians are afraid of progress and growth. The truth is that ideas that seem “progressive” today really aren’t anything new, but have been around for a long time. Christians should not be afraid of these ideas, but we do have to stand on our convictions based on Biblical beliefs.

Ephesians 5:22-26 (CSB)
Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord, because the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of the body. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives are to submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her to make her holy, cleansing her with the washing of water by the word.
Matthew 22:37-40 (CSB)
He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.”

Myth #5: Christianity is impossible to do
Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week we’re busting the myth that Christianity is impossible to do. Sometimes it may feel that way, whether it’s because we see how hard it is to live life the way Jesus did, or how different the world is around us. Nobody in the Bible was perfect except Jesus himself, not even the heroes of the Bible, and that’s not the requirement for us as Christians either. Living Christian life the way Jesus taught and showed us isn’t an easy one, but life is so much better when we let go and let Him be Lord of our life.

Episode #4: Christians Shouldn’t Worry
Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week we’re interjecting an episode this week to discuss why Christians shouldn’t be worrying about what’s going on in the world around us. With all the craziness around us with elections, conspiracy theories, and of course the pandemic, it’s easy to fall into worry. The truth is God is in control no matter what’s happening around us, and that should always be enough for it to be well with us.

Myth #3: You have to get your act together before coming to church
Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week we’re busting the myth that you need to get your act together before coming to church or before becoming a Christian. The truth is that nobody has their act together, so that can’t be a prerequisite for coming to church. If we let Him, God will use everything we’ve been through, good and bad, to help us reach others with the gospel.

Myth #2: Church is Just Another Money Grab
Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week’s episode is all about busting the myth that the church is just another money grab. We see lots of examples that feel like money grabs, like the televangelists that always have a new thing you have to have or another book that’s a must read. The truth is the church needs money to operate and serve the community and move their overall mission of spreading the gospel forward.

In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should earn their living by the gospel. For my part I have used none of these rights, nor have I written these things that they may be applied in my case. For it would be better for me to die than for anyone to deprive me of my boast!

2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (CSB)
The point is this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver.
Matthew 6:26-30 (CSB)
“Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying? And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you—you of little faith?”
John 16:33 (CSB)
“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”

Welcome to Season 2! This season is all about busting up myths about the church. This week’s episode is all about busting the myth that the church is a crutch for the weak. In a “pick yourself up by your bootstraps” world, it’s important we realize we can’t earn our way into Heaven. We can’t even really live the Christian life Jesus laid out for us without true strength. That strength only comes from God.

Episode 7.5 - A Call to Action: Get Back to Church
Going through the COVID pandemic turned a lot of things upside down, including going to church. The discipline of being there every Sunday had to fall to the wayside during the height of the pandemic. As society opens back up, we need to grow that discipline back and get back to church.

Episode 7 - What the Church is Supposed to Look Like
The church will never be perfect, but we have examples in life we can use as a comparison for what the church is supposed to look like. Just like working in a company or on a family ranch, we all have our roles to play in our local church and the global Church. No role is more important than any others, and the Church needs everyone to run efficiently and effectively in spreading the gospel.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
1 Corinthians 12:12-27
“For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ. For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all given one Spirit to drink. Indeed, the body is not one part but many.If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I’m not an eye, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God has arranged each one of the parts in the body just as he wanted. And if they were all the same part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” Or again, the head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that are weaker are indispensable. And those parts of the body that we consider less honorable, we clothe these with greater honor, and our unrespectable parts are treated with greater respect, which our respectable parts do not need.
Instead, God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the less honorable, so that there would be no division in the body, but that the members would have the same concern for each other. So if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it.”

Episode 6 - Why waste my time going to church?
We all have reasons we don’t go to church, or have asked the question, “Why do I go to church?”
Churches come in all shapes and sizes, but what matters most is the gathering of believers to hold each other accountable, encourage each other, and love one another with the focus solely on Jesus. You can find sermons, worship music, and other aspects of church online, but it’s no replacement for doing life together in church. Whether you grew up in church and have fallen away, never been to church at all, or have lived a good life, there’s a place for you in the church today.

There are lots of “rules” associated with the church. Sometimes it feels like church is all about those rules, such as lightning will strike when you walk in the door because of something you’ve done in your past. We need to be careful how we handle and talk about the rules because being a Christian isn’t about the rules. It’s not about being good enough because nobody is perfect. It’s all about our relationship with Christ.
Tattoo Verse: Revelation 19:16 (NIV) (Did Jesus have a tattoo? We’re uncertain. But should we condemn those that do? Definitely not!)
“On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:
King of Kings and Lord of Lords.”
Verse references for rules:
Drinking
“For John the Baptist did not come eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’”
Luke 7:33-34 (CSB)
If you think it’s wrong, why do it to begin with?
Dancing and Instruments
“David and the whole house of Israel were dancing before the Lord with all kinds of fir wood instruments, lyres, harps, tambourines, sistrums, and cymbals.”
2 Samuel 6:5 (CSB)
“Footloose: 1984”
Dressing your best - Come as you are (Or not)
1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
James 2:1-5 ESV
“My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?”
Tithing
2 Corinthians 6:7 (CSB)
“Each person should do as he has decided in his heart - not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver.”

Episode 4 - Denominations and Division in the Church
To have or not to have instruments? Baptism? Elders vs Deacons? Confession and healing? What does it all mean? Does any of that really matter?
There are lots of different denominations, but most of the differences are more about style than substance. Listen as we break it down for you a bit and discuss what really matters when looking for your church home.
Over 200 denominations in America. Over 45,000 in the world*
Every denomination has different origins**
1 Corinthians 1:10 (CSB)
Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, that there be no divisions among you, and that you be united with the same understanding and the same conviction.

In this episode we’re discussing the rigidity and intolerance of the people in the church. We tend to take a stand on things that we disagree with without seeing the heart of the person. Jesus calls us to love people wherever they’re at because He loves them.
G.K Chesterson- “Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions.”
Matthew 7:5
"You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Hypocrisy in the church and self righteous attitudes
Everyone in the church is a hypocrite by nature - all believe things we can’t be perfect about.
Per Jesus, teaching, we need to focus on our own sin, not worry about everyone else’s struggles *1
Hy·poc·ri·sy - /həˈpäkrəsē/ - noun:
1.The practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense *2
Scripture References:
Matthew 7:3-5 (NIV)
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye’, when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
Matthew 5:27-28 (CSB)
“You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
Matthew 18:20 (CSB)
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there among them”
Bonus Scripture:
Hebrews 10:25 (CSB)
“Not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching”
1.We are not advocating that two wrongs make a right. We are simply stating that porn addiction is just as wrong as anyone else’s sin.

Thanks for listening! We are Bill Allen and Matt Gunter. Just a couple of guys who have experienced church in two very different ways. One is a new Christian and the other has been a Christian for as long as he can remember. Here, we discuss the misconceptions about the church, the things that are very wrong with the church, and what the church should look like from a Biblical perspective. It's up to all of us to fix these issues and let everyone know, you're not wrong. There are issues with the church but we must be the solution.
