This week I continue with my S.H.I.T.E. Guide to overcoming over-eating, over-thinking, over-anything; anything that we engage in in an effort to block out, numb, or avoid underlying discomfort, issues or inner-conflicts. I explore the 'I' of the S.H.I.T.E. Guide and explore isolation, loneliness and disconnection. As humans, this is a powerful evolved need and one we often dismiss as minor or unimportant. Unless, that is you happen to have experienced it yourself.
I explore the difference between solitude and isolation and why the former can be positive, whilst the latter can be overwhelmingly negative. I share how this is not just a psychological pain, but how it affects us physically and for good reason. I also share some thoughts and tips on how to start to reconnect and how we can use our physical habits and mindset to bolster our need for social connection when it isn't at its best.

This week I introduce you to my S.H.I.T.E. Guide to overcoming over-eating, over-thinking and over-working. I often say when it comes to health and weight-loss 'it's not about the diet.' The reason for that is that whilst IT DOES MATTER what we eat, how much we eat and how much activity we build into our lives, that's not where the real challenges are. It's in the day-to-day stresses and challenges of life, our own self-limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviours and how we manage ourselves and those challenges. That's where the S.H.I.T.E. Guide comes in handy. It helps you pinpoint what aspect of life's crap we need to focus on dealing with and get to work on clearing it out. Ths week I give an overview of the S.H.I.T.E. Guide, and in coming weeks I will dive deeper in each of the areas of S.H.I.T.E. offering suggestions on how to overcoem the challenges and stay on track with our goals. Dr Rob did not disappoint. He gives some real insight and valuable advice for those of us who know very little about this topic. You can connect with Dr Rob at the following:

This week I am delighted to be joined by fellow Health coach Wayne Barrigan. Wayne and I know each other from our policing days and it was great to catch up with Wayne and find out how he now works with clients to help them improve their health and fitness and nutrition in a sustainable way. I also share a quick food for thought building on last week's episode on the Physical aspect of our relationship with food. I explore the importance of satisfaction and actually enjoying our food. I think this is often so under-appreciated in diets and weight control and is critical in my view to sustainable weight management and loss. especially since it plays into the other aspects of our relationship with food, namely the social role and emotional part it plays in our lives.

This week I am starting to explore how we relate to food and drink and as you the listener the question - what is your relationship with food like? Over coming weeks I intend to explore this in more depth as it is such an important factor in building sustainable approaches to health and weight management.I am also joined by Tim Lewis, founder of Stoneham Press and someone who has the spirit of the restless midlifer. Tim shares his own story that led him to his current focus and how life events have shaped his journey. I love to share the stories of people like Tim because for many of us it's a reminder that there is more to life and there is a big world out there.
Stoneham Press is a publishing, social media and training company set up by Tim Lewis at the age of 41 to publish his fiction books in 2014. He successfully published Timeshock: I want my life back, Timeshock 2: the Fourth Reich and Timeshock 3 : The Future Ark in his time travel series in 2014 under his full name Timothy Michael Lewis. Between 2015 and 2017 Tim published three books in his fantasy Magpies and Magic series, but Tim became progressively more interested in learning how to market his books and online business in general. His last book in 2018 was Social Media Networking where he interviewed 20 people on how they had used social media to get ahead in their lives.
Since then Stoneham Press has been more concentrated on social media training, self-publishing and documenting Tim's travels in the US. Tim was the host of the Begin Self-Publishing Podcast between 2016-2019 and run the #indieAuthorChat Twitter chat for the Alliance of Independent Authors between 2019-2022.
Tim is the co-host of the Oh No! Not Another Live Show!, a general interest interview show and runs the Book Chat Live show on Amazon Live and YouTube.
He is also the creator of the Tim Lewis TCF YouTube channel where Tim talks about his efforts to visit every state in the US (currently at 40 states) and general travel advice from a serial US traveller.
Recently Tim has launched Stoneham Press training where you will find several courses on various skills Tim has learned are useful for online business, especially with regard to video editing and live show production.

This week I build upon my thoughts last week on finding the right balance between diet and exercise and focus in on diet and how the overarching framing of 'restriction' is problematic for many of us.In this episode I outline an alternative approach and give my thinking on this which is a work in progress and very much shaped by my own experiences and those of my clients.
If you are finding yourself with 'diet burnout' then this episode is intended to help you start your journey back from burnout to getting back on top of your health and in charge of your weight management. I mention a video from my FAQ page 'the four levers of weight management'
let me know your thoughts.

This week I explore some of the foundational questions that I seek to answer when working with clients and indeed in my own efforts at improving my health and losing weight. I define some key terms - 'movement,' 'activity,' 'exercise,' and 'diet.' I then explore the factors that we need to consider when thinking about where to focus our health efforts. Do I focus on the 'diet' aspect or 'exercise?'
The short answer is, 'it depends,' however, I dig into that and give some guiding thoughts on where to direct our efforts. I also explore the potential benefits that can arise when we differentiate between 'activity' and 'exercise.'
This episode is intended to provide a foundation for next week's episode in which I dig into the 'diet' side of the mix. So watch out for next week's episode too. Get subscribed to ensure you receive every episode.

This week I share some insights into overcoming our tendency to label ourselves (not to mention others) and how this can mean we don't address the real underlying reasons why we often struggle to achieve our health and weight loss goals. Do you call yourself, 'lazy', 'greedy' 'useless'? Then this is for you. I am also delighted to be joined by Kat Paylor-Bent, an Adaptive Fasion Designer, Wheelchair user and advocate for inclusivity. We explore Kat's life changing injury 16 years ago, and how she and her family have worked hard to adapt and build a life around this and other challenges. inspirational, insightful and well worth a listen!
Kat Paylor-Bent is a wheelchair using Fashion and Inclusion expert.
She acquired my injury 16 years ago, and she is in the unenviable position of being on both sides of the disability fence, but this hasn't stopped her. Instead, she has used her passion for life to highlight the need for more equality and inclusion within the fashion industry.
Clothing is a universal right for every human, yet those in the disabled community encounter barriers every day of their life to functional, comfortable and above all fashionable clothing. Seated Sewing was founded to provide bespoke outfits for the disabled community.
Kat also co-founded Seated Perspectives with Isaac Harvey, which provides access videos that help to showcase good accessibility of venues. All too often venues, be that business or leisure facilities have got exceptional access and facilities but they don’t shout about it. So the videos we create help to showcase facilities and advertise it to the wider disabled community.
Kat wants to use her platform to change that narrative and make the world more equitable and inclusive.

In this week's episode I share some thoughts on getting back to basics with our sleep. I am also including the audio from my appearance on my friend Richard Tubb's 'Tubb Talk' Podcast in which Richard grills me on all things to do with health, weight, headspace, stress and focus. Richard's podcast is aimed at those working in the 'Managed Service Provider' (IT) space and he was keen to pick my brains on how busy business owners and professionals can clear some headspace and get back to looking after their health.I thought I'd share this episode (with Richard's permission) as I think it provides a good 'back to basics' overview of the key things that can help regain control over our wellbeing whilst juggling a hectic life.

This week Dave marvels at the power of our brains but identifies why its timing can be rubbish when it comes to brining worries, ideas and things you have to do to your attention. Have you ever settled down to sleep only to find you brain chimes in with a load of stuff resulting in you being unable to switch off and hours of staring at the ceiling? Or have you woken at 4am only to have you brain air a few things with you - sleep banished for the rest of the night? Chances are as a busy midlifer you will have experienced that numerous times. The trouble is we then don't recharge our batteries and cope less well the next day, leading to falling off our health and weight loss plans.Dave shares three routines to help you improve your brain's timing and help you get a better night's sleep and switch off much easier.

It's the final episode of 2022! Continuing the theme of getting ready to make 2023 an awesome year for our health and life, I share my own experiences with making the incremental changes (sprout-sweating) and how they can lead to dramatic shifts in our health and life. I share how I have improved my own health over the years, including my recent health check numbers, by ditching the all or nothing approach and sticking with the steady, consistent sprout-sweating.I am also joined by fellow CrossFit Tailored Training member, Dave Armstrong, who shares his inspirational story of a return to health and exceptional fitness following a heart attack 5 years ago. Dave's story is sobering and empowering at the same time and the key message is - no matter what age, start now, make those changes and you can not only reclaim your health, but achieve greater health levels than ever before.
Dave is in his 60's now and retired from a stressful support role following his heart attack. He shares his own thoughts and experiences and encourages us all to value our health and make it a priority.

2023 is looming as is the festive period. It's a time that naturally draws us to reflection and hope for the future and the inevitable New Year's Resolution. In this week's episode I share some thoughts on how to get some rough planning in now and some questions to consider as we head in to 2023. I am also joined by Chris brown who shares his thoughts on shaping up a brilliant life after work or retirement. Chris shares some great insights and tools to encourage you to start now to shape up your life.Following a career as a lawyer in industry, and with many years of part-time involvement in coaching people through key life stage changes, Crhis looked at the way we see retirement and realised that we are being very poorly served. Masses of available financial advice but very little other advice is unhelpful.
He read, listened, researched and subsequently wrote a book “Leaders Don’t Retire” – taking a completely different tack ….. the money is important but secondary – first you need to know what you want!

This week, Dave takes time away from the interviews to answer some listener and client questions. This will be one of two episodes in which Dave expands on a number of ideas he uses in his work with clients in a bid to help you shape your weight loss journey into one that is more sustainable and gets you where you want to go. This week, Dave shares how he views the role of motivation and weight loss and how seeing them as the First Gear in your weight loss vehicle is a great way to frame when and how to leverage it. speaking of levers, Dave also expands on his 'Four Levers Of Weight Management.' This is a way to frame our approach to sustainable weight loss in a clear way that puts aside the confusion and the misinformation about what we 'should' (according to whom??) be doing. This week Dave is joined by Duncan O'Brien, a PT who works with clients of all ages and has a great take on wellness and movement as we age. His phrase, 'walk your way back to the gym' is on that strikes at the heart of the 'no pain no gain' mantras that many of us can fall for. As we enter and travel through midlife it's important to work with not against our body and build slowly and steadily, ensuring our health is grounded in a good fitness base level. Dave also shares his thoughts on aligning our focus, with the factors in our life and our feelings and emotions.Duncan is a Personal Trainer, Coach, Mental Fitness Practitioner and Whole Hearted Leadership advocate. He is a recovering academic, who is now 10 years into embracing his passion for health and well-being. After spending 9 years at university studying chemistry, a year traveling and 3 years in biomedical sales he finally took the plunge. Before and Beyond Fitness: Move, Play, Engage and Enjoy.

It's episode71. In this episode, Dave shares a thought or two on becoming more comfortable with your emotions and developing a sense of emotional fearlessness. Dave is also joined by Gary Hosey, an Emotional Intelligence coach and expert with years of experience helping individuals, teams and leaders develop their understanding and skills in this area. A really valuable insight into how we can learn to not only harness our emotions to achieve our goals but also to find joy and a richness in experiencing the more fully. Gary Hosey's journey started with emotional dysfunction: his family didn't practice self-awareness around feelings, moods, emotions, and their impact on us and how we relate to other people, the skills we now understand as the game-changer emotional intelligence or EQ. In 1999 he embarked on an EQ adventure in his personal and professional life, and in 2003 became EQ-i 2.0 certified. He's now worked with over 7000 leaders from over 100 global organisations as a coach and trainer. In this episode, we explore the menopause and Carolyn shares her insights into supporting and coaching women and men through this challenging time. This is an informative episode for anyone experiencing menopause, not sure whether they are going through the early stages, and for anyone who is supporting, loving or leading someone experiencing menopause. Carolyn Hobdey spent 20 years building a corporate career as a Board Director in Human Resources working for some of the World’s largest employers and most recognisable brands. Yet, her career success wasn’t matched by her personal life, which was a mess. In 2018, her world imploded. Now a multi-published author and media commentator, Carolyn specialises in talking about 'Twats’ and Midlife Transformation for women. Getting out of your own rigid thinking and getting creative Join Dave Algeo aboard "Sprout 1" and take another journey into your inner world where mind, meaning and metaphor collide. In this episode, Dave is joined by Dave Hall, Founder of the Ideas Centre after discovering a passion for creativity and innovation. Dave has a proven leadership track record at Board level in a range of sectors (both private and public). The core rationale for the offering is as follows: the world is changing at an ever-increasing pace, but the decisions we make and the behaviours that we display are based on models of “reality” derived from our understanding inevitably outdated patterns from the past. We MUST find ways of challenging these patterns, to free up our thinking, to generate fresh and novel (i.e. creative) ideas that then feed innovation. For the 10 years prior to The Ideas Centre, Dave was CEO of HFL Sport Science Ltd, a drug surveillance and contract research organisation based in Newmarket. More generally, since 1984 he has worked in a range of manufacturing, service and technology transfer organisations, holding positions in engineering, marketing and manufacturing management. Creativity, innovation, and a pursuit of the perfect culture provide a common thread throughout his career to date. He asks you to give yourself 'permission to be human' and explores how this relates to those stories (our inner narratives). He also provides some 'homework' (or food for thought) for the week ahead - something which will help you to start to be more aware of those inner narratives in a bid to identify those stories that are more problematic for our wellbeing.
