The Animal Files Podcast: Recent Episodes

Victoria Stigliano-Dzuban & Miranda de Haan

Caring for a companion animal can be one of the most rewarding, yet challenging experiences in our lives.

Whether you want to learn more about subjects such as safety, nutrition, stress, your relationship with your furry, feathery, and scaly family members, why they do certain things, and our spiritual connection with our animal friends, this podcast is for you. Because stress affects our pets’ lives in so many ways, this aspect will be touched on in many of our episodes. We are not about being light, fluffy, and safe. We will be delving into areas that are not often talked about and helping you to take a deeper dive into the world of pet care.

Every second Tuesday, join Victoria Stigliano-Dzuban, an Animal Spirituality and Energy Facilitator, Animal Translator, and Integrative Energy Healing Practitioner, and Miranda de Haan, an Animal Health Technologist and Pet Care Safety Expert, as they discuss various topics, interview other pet experts, and periodically provide personalized guidance to our community.

In this episode, we sit down and have a fantastic conversation with Dog Parenting Coach, Author, and Social Entrepreneur, Angie Winters. We discuss her book, Don't Train Your Dog: A Pet Parenting Guide to teaching good behavior, calming fears and raising happy dogs, the plight of "hard to home" rescue dogs and how switching to the Dog Parenting mindset, using her "recipes" for teaching dogs and making them happy.....and her "prescriptions" for fixing unwanted behavior, is extremely effective and respectful, compared to the typical dog training we've all been taught and is widely pushed by our society.

Join us for this incredibly enlightening and educational conversation!

Bio:

For Angie Winters, author of Don’t Train Your Dog, helping dogs is more than a job— it’s a calling. As a dog parenting coach and social entrepreneur for over 20 years, Angie has obsessively studied, raised, and rehabilitated over 1,000 dogs…and helped their parents. Her record for fixing "broken" dogs—who were deemed unfixable by typical dog trainers, vets, medications, behavioral experts, parents, and rescues—is unparalleled. Using a careful understanding of dog emotion and effective communication, Angie’s cutting-edge dog parenting philosophy helps dog parents, rescues, and prison dog training programs nationwide. Angie has had dog parents drive from as far as California to seek out her coaching at her Ohio home. Her mission is to create a world where dogs are understood and valued for their incredible gifts, leading to happier and healthier lives for both dogs and their parents.

Adopting a dog, or any animal, from a shelter is not only saving a precious soul but helping to soothe your own as well, and why adopting and not shopping is to her, the only way to find the perfect companion.

We can all be Nuggets of Hope in our small slice of the world. Adopting a pet is one way.

Have you ever seen a service dog with its handler and wished you could take your dog everywhere with you too? Seems like a wonderful idea for all you dog lovers out there, right? Well... there is a difference between desiring to have your dog with you at all times and legitimately needing your service dog to help you with serious health issues, mobility issues, & navigating society with mental health conditions. Those dogs you see... They are highly trained and are providing a very specialized and incredibly important service. Or are they?

In this episode, we tackle the prevalent and very controversial problem with Fake Service Dogs. We discuss the uprising of scammers, grifters, and people who selfishly try to work "the system" for their own benefit, at the expense of those who legitimately need the help and support of these specialized dogs.

We also dive into the legalities and laws (or lack thereof) that have been put in place to try to protect legitimate handlers and their service dogs.

Last week we shared with you the idea of animals being our mirror and reflecting our internal state or energy. In this episode, we’ll dive more deeply into the reflective messages your pets may be telling/showing you & help you with understanding & interpreting them. We'll be discussing the five types of "mirrors" that may be at play between you and your animal... the Emotional Mirror, the Mental Mirror, the Energetic Mirror, the Physical Mirror and the Stability Mirror and how to become aware and move through any behavioral issues your animal may be displaying.

We all know that mirrors provide us with a reflection, but our pets also provide us with a reflection. The difference is that mirrors reflect back to us what is external - our face, our hair, our perceived physical flaws; our pets, however, reflect back to us what is internal - our stress, our anxiety, our anger, our intolerances, our excitement & joy, our calm, and even our internal physical state.

In this episode, we will explore this a bit more and about how your energetic relationships with your pets, can provide you with a pathway to understanding your animals and yourselves a bit better and provide you some tools to help you, help them, help you.

In this episode, Sabrina Fair Andronica Returns to promote her amazing 2nd book, Cruelty Free is the Way to Be! As always, our conversations are fun yet educational and informative. Join us as we discuss her book and how it is helping to change the hearts and minds of children and adults alike, about the very controversial topic of laboratory animal testing. We go on to discuss how we, as consumers, can support companies who have made the decision to be "Cruelty-Free" and even talk about some of the advances in science that will hopefully help to eliminate animal testing in the future.

About Sabrina:

As a young girl, Sabrina Fair Andronica showed a keen interest in writing. At seven, she wrote her first screenplay with the help of her screenwriting father. The following year, The Los Angeles Times published a Kids' Reading Page to promote literacy before age nine and her little fun submissions about animals were chosen twice. Twenty-two years later, Sabrina became a children’s author, writing touching stories that promote animal activism. A list of her published titles include, Adventure At Rainbow Bridge, Labrador Retriever With The Block Head, and Cruelty-Free Is The Way To Be! Each fictional story is always just and fair.

Sabrina’s goal is to share with future generations her book brand, Always Fair Books, which shows awareness, compassion and enlightenment of animal activism and self growth. She has raised funds through her books for animal rescues and has visited a dozen seasonal camps and after school programs at shelters and sanctuaries. She’s also appeared on several podcasts, where she gets to shine light on her activism and book brand.

Victoria would like to dedicate this episode to her sweet little kitty, Maisie Mae Sparrow, who lost an unexpected and short-lived battle with lymphoma this past Easter.

In this episode, she shares her experiences watching her and her brother, Frankie (who passed in 2021) move through their anxiety struggles and how she was able to help them move through their fears and successfully support them.

For the past 3 1/2 yrs, Maisie had been constant "contributor" to the show and has even appeared as a frequent "guest" during our recordings. Maisie has taught Victoria and her family so much. She is terribly missed but the legacy she and her brother leave behind will go on to help so many. Despite her loss, Victoria is incredibly grateful that Maisie was able to live a very full and happy, albeit short, life with grace and style and she even got to enjoy some fun adventures.

Rest in peace beautiful one. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Tell Frankie we said hi and enjoy your next adventure!

In this episode we wrap up our pit bull and bully breed series with a lovely conversation with the author of the children's book, Labrador Retriever with the Block Head, and pit bull advocate Sabrina Fair Andronica.

We discuss many of the issues pit bulls and bully breeds face and how we can rise above the narrative that surrounds these beautiful animals, through education and compassion.

About Sabrina:

As a young girl, Sabrina Fair Andronica showed a keen interest in writing. At seven, she wrote her first screenplay with the help of her screenwriting father. The following year, The Los Angeles Times published a "Kids' Reading Page" to promote literacy before age nine and her little fun submissions about animals were chosen twice.

Season 3 continues with another information-packed episode in our "Much Ado About Pit Bull" Series. In this episode, we discuss the issue of judgement. As humans, we tend to judge everything first, before we have the full story, and many of us decide that our judgements are valid. Are they though? Are we jumping the gun a bit when it comes to Pit bulls and bully breeds? Should we or should we not have breed specific legislation? Join us for an in-depth conversation on this topic as to why this approach is short-sighted and in many, many cases, causes needless harm and suffering to many other dog breeds and breed types.

In this episode, we sit down for a lovely chat with the amazing Debby Dobson, Animal Behaviorist and owner of Good Dog! Animal Behavior. Dogs are her passion and although she works with all types of dogs, she primarily works with those who are fearful and often reactive dogs, to help them "feel comfortable in their own fur" and have full, well-rounded, and well-loved lives.

More about Debby:

I work primarily with fearful, reactive dogs, many of whom are rescues.

As more Americans began adopting rather than buying dogs from breeders, as a pet sitter, I began to notice behaviors in dogs I'd rarely seen before. Some were shaking when I arrived, others froze ridgedly with a "don't come near me" look on their faces. My challenge was how to help them relax and trust me. The first "tool" I used was taking them for a long walk, during which I simply followed and observed.

Later, I adopted a dog of my own who I observed and walked for several days at the shelter before I brought her home. During that time, I saw no sign of any aggression whatsoever. When she came home Nora was polite and respectful of my cats as well. But two weeks later, she tried to bite a male friend of mine who'd been sitting sharing his lunch with her on our back steps.

Needless to say, I was shocked. I even tried to re-home her, but fortunately that failed. Thus began my almost 2-year journey into dog behavior. I wanted to help my pup feel comfortable in the world; I wanted to take her anywhere with me and not worry that she would hurt anyone, or be utterly miserable and tense herself.

I've always loved dogs. They are so emotionally honest, and if they have a supportive, caring home environment, they are the most loving, loyal, sweet companions. I want to help people give their dogs the best life possible. I want to work with people who are dedicated to their dogs' happiness and well-being.

I am in the process of writing a memoir about my dog Nora and the journey we took together. A condensed chapter in my book appeared in a recent Chicken Soup for the Soul book about dogs. I have also written a number of articles about dogs that have appeared online, and in print. I have spoken about dog behavior locally in a workshop forum (including at a dog club) and have also taught dog behavior as a 6-week class.

Booking info:

I am actively looking for more venues in which to speak about dogs, and I welcome the opportunity for more interviews.

=> To book Debby... email her at: dogmom7@gmail.com

Services:

I provide one-on-one consultations with my clients pertaining to dog behavior related problems. I plan on expanding this to small online classes within the next year to reach more people. I have also taught "Dog Behavior 101" as both a 6-week class and a 2-hour workshop.

A recent court order that shut down a disreputable breeding facility in VA has now thankfully freed almost 4000 Beagles from a terrible life. They had no toys, no interaction and stimulation, and often lacked proper veterinary care.

And now they all need new places to live! The article below has a link of who to contact if you or someone you know can foster. I have also alerted my contact at the ASPCA Behavioral Rehab Center to see if they might be able to take some of the neediest cases, those who are badly traumatized. Additionally, I posted the article on NextDoor as well as on an online animal rights group I belong to.

https://www.today.com/pets/pets/4000-mistreated-beagles-rescued-envigo-rms-rcna37890

The HSUS is working with its partner shelters across America to transport these dogs into places where they can start the process of healing. Please read the article carefully - there are many links for further information about ways to help.

In this episode, we chat about the incredible messages and lessons our animals want to share with us and the importance of acknowledging the soul connections and relationships we share with them throughout our lives and beyond. We also discuss, how those lessons and connections carry on even after they pass into their next life, and what that may mean for you.

About Annie:

I’m Annie Bourke, Cosmic Heart Intuitive. My passion is animals. I am a Brisbane based international animal communicator and animal medium and love conveying messages between animals and their humans. I am also an international bestselling author, healer, and host of my podcast show “What Animals Tell Me”.

I enjoy discovering animal wisdom and enabling animal parents to better understand their animal’s behaviour and health issues so that they can enhance the quality of their animal’s life, and deepen their relationship.

I love supporting healing and wellbeing of animals and humans and combine my spiritual gifts to provide intuitive healing support.

For bereaved animal parents, I assist with the grief process by connecting with their animal’s soul and asking questions the parents have, and provide peace of mind.

Intrigued by people’s spiritual purpose and soul evolution journey, I have undertaken significant training and am a certified clinical aromatherapist, crystal therapist, reiki master, angel intuitive, medical intuitive, clairvoyant, clairsentient and medium.

My first book and international best-seller, The Bridge to Animal Consciousness, was released on August 8, 2018. Through this, I aim to raise global consciousness about animals, why they are here, how they help us and how we can help them.

My second book and number one Amazon best-seller, Evolving Hearts and Souls - The Guide to Spiritual Awakening, was released on September 2, 2018. I wrote my second book to support those on their spiritual awakening path and to demystify some of the weird phenomena that may be experienced, based on my personal journey and studies.

In 2021, I launched my podcast show “What Animals Tell Me” where I share my experiences with animal communication and animal mediumship, and interview guests who have amazing experiences working with animals.

I am here to make a difference for animals, and support humans as they awaken and progress on their spiritual journey.

Services and Products:

Books: The Bridge to Animal Consciousness and Evolving Hearts and Souls - The Guide to Spiritual Awakening available as paperbacks and e-books on Amazon.

Podcast: "What Animals Tell Me" https://anchor.fm/annie6509

Animal communication sessions - By connecting to your animal through photographs, I can deepen the animal-human relationship by asking your questions and finding out what is happening in your animal's world, particularly with health and behaviour issues.

Animal mediumship sessions - I support bereaved animal parents by connecting with the soul of their animal in spirit and answering their questions. Often people carry guilt, regret, remorse and grief for years after their animal passes. I can ask what happened if the humans weren't at home or don't have a diagnosis. The animals can confirm that the soul endures and that they have transitioned safely. They can advise signs of energetic visits and tell me if their soul is going to reincarnate so that they can return to their human family.

Animal Mediumship Program - I work with bereaved animal parents for up to 12 weeks assisting them and their animal through the grief process towards healing and peace of mind.

Distance Healing - I provide wellbeing support for animals and humans with Reiki, crystal therapy and clinical aromatherapy.

Animal Zenning Program (launching soon) - A program to support animal parents struggling with animals who have behaviour issues related to past trauma / abuse. An increasing number of animal parents are opening their hearts to rescue / shelter animals who are at varying stages of recover from physical, emotional, mental and psychological trauma. Finding out what our animals are dealing with on their recovery journey guides healing and support, helping both the humans and the animals.

In this episode, we have a super fun conversation with Dreama Denver, pet adoption advocate, actress, mother, devoted wife of Bob "Gilligan" Denver, and 3x award-winning author that includes her most recent new book, Zen and Now (illustrated by Jan Philpot). A delightful tale of the power of an animal's love and talks about the doggie adventures of Zen, Dreama's beautiful Husky-mix, who was rescued just in time and adopted. Her book elaborates the importance of pet adoption and the difference it brings to their life when they get a forever home.

This beautiful book has received high praise, including an International Book Award in Children's Mind, Body, and Spirit category at the Indie Book Awards. "This book poured out of me because I wanted to make sure my Zen lived on in a tangible way, so this recognition means the world to me," says a humbled Dreama' Mrs. Gilligan' Denver.

Zen and Now, published by Headline Books, with its visually rich and appealing text and graphics are delightful and entertaining for all ages. (Available through www.bobdenver.com, and Amazon).

"When adopting a dog, look into its eyes to see its soul and what you'll find is a creature staring back at you, looking straight into your heart," says Dreama.

Dreama Denver’s other award-winning books, including her acclaimed memoir, GILLIGAN'S DREAMS, and her much-cherished book for little ones, FOUR BEARS IN A BOX. (Available through Amazon).

More bout Dreama:

Dreama Denver is the wife of the late Bob "Gilligan" Denver from Gilligan’s Island and now heads The Denver Foundation, helping families of other special needs children, and supporting veteran’s causes. She keeps in touch with Bob’s many loyal fans through www.bobdenver.com, and oversees “Little Buddy Radio”, an FM and online non-profit radio station owned and operated by the foundation heard around the globe on the Tune-In app and Amazon Alexa devices worldwide. Along with Zen and Now, Dreama is also the multiple award-winning children’s book author of Four Bears In A Box written for their autistic son Colin and her acclaimed memoir, GILLIGAN'S DREAMS. She often appears at book signings and celebrity autograph and memorabilia shows, helping keep Bob’s legacy and memory alive.

In this episode, we have an in depth and thought-provoking chat with the amazing Terri Jay, the Cowgirl Shaman. As an Animal Communicator, Veterinary Intuitive, and Animal Medium, she teaches others about spirituality, life, and death, both animal and human, through the lens of Physics. Join us as we explore these topics and share with you that YOU TOO can develop these abilities.

About Terri Jay:

Terri Jay enjoys a solid reputation as a medical and veterinary intuitive, medium and animal communicator. She regularly talks to people and pets who have passed, particularly when helping people deal with the loss of a loved one. Along with her work on the “other side,” Terri also works with people who have communication disorders such as autism, Alzheimer’s, traumatic brain injuries, people who are comatose, and babies who have just not yet learned to talk. She is adept at remote viewing and sensing and her readings produce amazing results and incredible details. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, she remembers being drawn to horses at an early age. She went on to attend Ohio State University where she studied Animal Science.

By the mid-1970s, Terri had moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where she started a free, horseback therapy program for disabled children. In 1985, she moved to Reno to become the first Executive Director of the Nevada Commission for the Preservation of Wild Horses, a position she held until 1990 when she decided once again to offer a horseback therapy program. It was during this time that she discovered her gift for telepathic communication with disabled children that grew to include horses and other animals. Terri enjoys a full-time career in providing readings by phone and in person and doing workshops around the country. She has also had successful shows at local casinos. Terri lives in Carson Valley, Nevada with her husband, horses and dogs.

In this episode, we have a lovely chat with Christine Milkovic Krauss, author of children's book Teddy Loses his Ears. Our discussion takes us into the world of fostering, adoption, and the importance of looking beyond appearances and opening your home and heart to that one pet who may be looking for YOU.

About Christine:

Teddy Loses His Ears is a non-fiction story about my real life rescue cat who lost his ears to frostbite while being homeless in negative 50 degree temperatures in central Canada.

All of the books in the Teddy series will highlight educational points about pet care, support inclusivity and celebrate being different together. Teddy Loses His Ears is the introduction book to the series and touches on self esteem and disability awareness. Each illustration in the story is hand painted and even has a Teddy's favourite toy hidden on every page for children to find! This story was created to raise awareness for rescue organizations and promote, adopt vs shop, to find your purr-fect family pet.

In addition to being a pet lover and cat mom, I am also a mom of two primary school aged children.

These books could never have come to life without their inspiration, a tribe of supportive humans and of course, Book Club.

In this episode, The Animal Files sits down and shares a wonderful conversation about all things animal with Mary Paulette McDonogh, world-renowned Intuitive and Animal Communicator.

About Mary Paulette:

Mary Paulette, whom people call MP for short, is an intuitive and animal communicator based in Calgary, Alberta. Some people may also refer to this as being a pet psychic, animal psychic, animal medium, or even an animal or pet whisperer. Even though MP is based in Calgary, she works virtually with clients around the world. As an international animal communicator, pet psychic, animal psychic, and animal medium, MP takes great pride in her ability to create deeper connections and understanding between her clients and their pets. Working with an animal communicator is most often a game-changer for pet owners. You gain insight into their world that you just wouldn’t get any other way, not to mention the harmony, peace, and ease it brings into your household. Elevating the lives of people and animals is the core foundation of everything she does. She is particularly passionate about helping animals and their owners with senior pets, chronic health conditions and end of life. She also specializes in anxiety, food issues, behavioural issues, house soiling, life changes (such as a move, divorce, marriage, children, etc) and many other topics. In each session, MP provides clients with practical recommendations that help contribute to increased joy and vitality in their pet’s life from the newfound discoveries of their pet’s world. Another significant benefit to animal communication is the peace and harmony that it can restore in your household.

MP uses clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, clairalience, clairgustance, and claircognizance methods to communicate with animals/pets, reptiles, fish, arachnids, amphibians, and birds. There hasn’t been a living thing that she hasn't been able to connect to yet and she does this virtually and in person. MP also works with people too, they often end up booking a psychic reading session for themselves after they've had a reading session for their pets! Just like animals, she works with people to provide insight into their health, chronic health conditions, emotional well-being (stress, anxiety, depression, etc.) as well as connect them with loved ones that have passed. MP enjoys being a medium and have regular clients who book medium reading sessions with her.

In addition to MP's psychic readings and animal communication sessions, she is also a level one certified practitioner in Bio-Energy Healing through the school of Michael D’Alton and a certified Emotion Code practitioner through Dr. Bradley Nelson. Depending on what is needed during a session, MP incorporates these techniques into her readings. People and animals are both equally quite receptive to this technique.

As for the more traditional side of MP, she is a mother, partner, friend, confidante, and lover of life. For an intuitive, she has an interesting and extensive background based in law, management, and strategic analysis. In addition to her business, she also works for the Federal Government as a Project Manager and before that, she was a flight attendant with West Jet and a Police Officer for Peel Regional Police in Mississauga/Brampton, Ontario.

In this episode we talk with primate specialist, founder of the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GReP), and president of the Gibbon Conservation Society in Malaysia about the importance of the rehabilitation and conservation of these incredible primates.

Bam's Bio:

Mariani Ramli a.k.a. Bam Arrogancia founded the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (GReP) in 2013, after learning about the plight of

gibbons and other primates in Malaysia. She serves as the director of GReP and current President for GCS.

She has a degree in animal biology, was a wildlife ranger with the Malaysian Wildlife Department for more than 10 years, has worked as a project coordinator and researcher for the Copenhagen Zoo, studying flat headed cats, and she has studied gibbon rehab from international organisations such as Phnam Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre in Cambodia and Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Thailand. She is a member of IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group Section on Small Apes, a rare and distinct international honour.

Mariani was recently a winner of the prestigious Young Leadership Awards by the Edge and has received the 2018 American Primatological Society Award. She was chosen as one of the Top Five Women in Leadership in Environmental Sustainability in 2017 and has been widely featured by both local and international media. She is also recognised as Malaysia's Eco Champion by Roots and Shoots, a part of the Jane Goodall Institute.

The ‘mother of gibbons’ herself, Bam has dedicated the last 7 years of her life to the gibbons. For the last 7 years, she has done everything from wiping poo to being a gibbon psychiatrist, cleaning enclosures to building them, menial paperwork to writing scientific proposals, selling GCS t-shirts to inspiring hundreds of kids and so much more, all for the gibbons.

In the years Bam spent working as a ranger in the forests of Malaysia, she has come to love our rainforests and the species that thrive in it. “I love my country so much, I’m giving back to my country by serving the wildlife.” Bam’s love for the gibbons knows no bounds, she has sacrificed everything and faced so many challenges to make this project a reality. When asked why she does it, all she says is, “Every sacrifice is so worth it when I see them make progress, every step is a step closer to freedom for them.”

Welcome to Season 2 of the Animal Files!

In this episode, we talk with author Brandon Wainwright about his recent book Tyson's Gift and about Tyson, a very special little chihuahua, their relationship, and Brandon's incredible journey of spiritual awakening that occurred as he was navigating the grieving process after Tyson's passing.

Brandon's Bio:

As a police officer, Brandon Wainwright has seen a lot in his ten-plus years on the force, but nothing so strange or life-changing as the spiritual awakening he experienced when his dog, a precocious Chihuahua named Tyson, passed away…and then began communicating from the other side.

Once a hard-nosed skeptic, Brandon found himself thrust into unfamiliar territory, consulting with spiritual intuitives and pet communicators in an effort to uncover the truth about the afterlife-embarking upon an incredible journey that would shake his perception of reality and challenge his beliefs about what happens to us after we die.

In this episode, we discuss whether animals think and if they do, what does that actually look like? How advanced are their thought processes? Do they problem solve? Are they self-aware? Do they have a consciousness like us? Can we really even know for sure?

Anyone who shares their lives with animals, probably knows the answers to some of these questions, but we thought we would break it all down, share our perspective, and explore this concept a little deeper.

Victoria would like to dedicate this episode to her cat Frankie Bean who recently and quite unexpectedly passed away. In this episode, she shares some of her experiences watching him explore and create his world in a way that leaves no doubt, in her mind, about the topic at hand.

He and his sister Maisie are continual "contributors" to the show and definite teachers in their own right. He will be missed but we're sure Maisie will continue their legacy from here on out with grace and style.

Rest in Peace Little Man and enjoy your next adventure!

The truth about collar safety. This is arguably one of the most important conversations for all dog owners. Lynette Smith is doing all she can to help keep your dog safe and happy. Her mission is one of urgency and the Ryder Safe Foundation is doing all they must to save as many dogs as possible from collar strangulation. This is real and incredibly prevalent issue and one that does not get spoken about enough.

Ryder Safe background: On October 24, 2018, our beloved 4-year old chocolate labrador, Ryder Jackson, was strangled to death from his collar while playing with his best friend Skyrah. We were totally in shock the day this happened, we never knew this was something "could" happen. We never knew how dangerous dog collars were, until that fateful day. Dog collars create a lot of dangers both in and outside of the home. After his loss, I wanted to make a difference for others....by educating them about the dangers of dog collars and how to use them properly in an effort to prevent collar strangulation. I'm also trying to get laws in place that will require companies to provide warning labels on all dog collar products.
