According to wish dad Bob Dazi, his son Ethan’s wish had such a positive impact that “he wanted to be able to support and inspire other children to keep fighting. He wanted to focus on a life of serving people. Unfortunately, Ethan passed from his illness on April 19, 2019 prior to fulfilling his desire here on earth”.

The introduction of the wish journey during week 1 of Gavin’s chemotherapy was an a-ha moment for wish mom Shannon King. This “strategy of hope” was apparent to her as he embarked on his treatment journey, reimagining his wish multiple times over and eventually choosing his very own man cave. Now a member of our board of directors, Shannon’s insight into the empowering impact a wish can have on a child lends itself to the perspective necessary to keep the mission moving forward.

Tricia Hiller has spent over two decades focusing on the well-being of children and providing family-centered care. As the Child Life and Creative Arts Therapy Director at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, she and her team work toward normalizing otherwise foreign hospital environments for children who are there for treatment or for long-term care. In working closely with the team at the Wish House, Tricia’s efforts have helped make meaningful connections between staff and families as they go on their wish journey.

To hear Samantha's story is to know of her resilience.
Like all of our wish kids, Sam’s experience of diagnosis and subsequent treatment, plus the accompanying ups and downs surrounding that period of time (twice!) have contributed to who she is today. Her vulnerability has allowed her to share her journey on Instagram, and her perspective is something we can all lean into:
“…life is just such a blessing. And even if you’re at that point where you’re in treatment, and it’s really rough and you’re like ‘when is this going to end?’, there will be a respite, regardless of if it’s curable, or something that you can’t cure…there’s definitely going to be a respite where you say, ‘I’m at peace now, and I’m living right now for me’. And I think that that’s such an important lesson because it just shows us what this life is, and what an amazing and beautiful thing it is to just be able to wake up in the morning, and take a breath, and stand on our two feet and say ‘I’m here for another day’.”

Since high school, Rachel has been involved with Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley as an intern, volunteer, and wish granter. In her work today, Rachel continues to provide hope and joy to the children she works with as a Clinical Psychologist and through her foundation Runway Heroes who help create fashion experiences for children with cancer in collaboration with leaders in the fashion industry.

In this episode, we chat with wish alum, Erin O'Brien. Erin’s wish to go to Disney World was highlighted with endless ice cream, a limousine ride, and fishing on a pirate ship. Now 30 years later, she reflects on the impact that her wish has had on her life, the trials and growth she’s experienced, and the importance of giving back in a meaningful way.
“To volunteer in any way shape or form is just so nurturing for the soul. You’re doing it hopefully to help so many other people but you’re getting so much back in return. You’re almost getting twice as much as you give in return. You don’t necessarily do it to make yourself feel better, but it does empower you to give more of that best part of yourself to help someone else in need.”

Brian’s wish to meet Ozzy Osbourne was granted in 2003, and the details surrounding that day have impacted not only Brian but his sister Tiffany as well. From Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups to interning at the chapter, to a career at Madison Square Garden (where he met his wife!) and working on two of Ozzy’s concerts, Brian’s wish experience continues to be an integral part of his life.
His desire and motivation to share the same experience with other wish kids has evolved into teaming up with his sister Tiffany as they work on granting wishes for kids in the Hudson Valley.

When it comes to Jamie Barr, “purpose” is the common thread that, since the beginning, has kept him involved at our chapter.
