GBC Labour Fair: Pandemic Edition
Labour Fair 2022: Pandemic Edition highlights some of the main struggles that workers – and particularly student workers -- are facing today. Over the five days of the Labour Fair, we will be posting video and audio resources focused on workers’ rights for students, the work and immigration rights of international students and the exciting organizing growing out of gig workers’ solidarity and activism.
In the fifth episode of GBC's fully digital Labour Fair, we are presented with a Zoom keynote lecture from Andria Babbington & John Cartwright current and former presidents of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council. Together they discuss the 150 year history of the Labour Council and the current initiatives of just transition toward green jobs. The also take up the three major crises confronting organized labour today around: jobs, the climate and equity.

In episode 4, we hear from Jennifer Scott, president of Gig Workers United. She talks about how gig worker is a freighted term, used both to misclassify app-based worker, and to distort the supposed flexibility of such work. Saurabh shares his experience as a bike delivery worker, who experienced powerlessness an alienation as a result of the app economy, and solidarity and change, as a result of finding the GWU.

In episode 3, we talk to Satinder Kaur Grewal of Naujawan Support Network. Satinder shares a brief and powerful account of her experience standing up to an exploitative, wage-stealing boss and finding solidarity in NSN. Simran Dhunna shares some context about the actions NSN have undertaken and interprets Satinder's story.
