Modern Musicology covers topics on rock and pop ranging mostly from 70s, 80s and 90s (with occasional excursions into 60s and 00s). Anything is fair game -- classic rock, R&B, folk, punk, prog, rap, metal, and more. Hosted by DJ and author Rob Levy, solo artist and former Aquanettas drummer Stephanie Seymour, drummer and author R. Alan Siler, and bassist Anthony Williams.

In this episode we are joined by former editor of Guitar World Magazine Brad Tolinski, co-author of the new book Blow By Blow: The Jeff Beck Story, to talk about the life and career of one of the most important and influential guitarists in the modern rock era. Brad tells us all about the significance of the Yardbirds, how Jeff's playing evolved over the decades, some of the colorful characters he encountered during the writing of the book, why Jeff's playing was crucial to the unfolding story of rock, and much more.

MTV 45th Anniversary

MTV launched 45 years ago on August 1, 1981 with "Video Killed the Radio Star." To celebrate this big anniversary, we spend time reminiscing about the glory days of Music Television by talking about our favorite music videos -- and a few of our least favorites. We mention some of the obvious big hits, like "Take on Me", "Sledgehammer", "Thriller", and "Rio", but we also hit a lot of deep cuts. Most of those deep cuts come from MTV's long-running show 120 Minutes, a show we all loved. We talk about some of the artists that MTV introduced us to as well as some legacy bands and artists that were forced to make the transition into the video era.

To celebrate Christine McVie's birthday on July 12th, we have a special show that features some of Christine's great deep cuts. She was arguably the greatest hitmaker in Fleetwood Mac, with biggies like "Say You Love Me," "You Make Lovin' Fun," "Little Lies," and "Everywhere," but there were many more sides to her than just that. The legendary Paul McCartney has a very busy time lately, with a new album (The Boys of Dungeon Lane), appearances on Saturday Night Live and the final Stephen Colbert show, a new exhibition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a recent book and documentary. Rob and Alan talk all about McCartney's goings on and review the new album, and get a little melancholy about aging and memory.

Saturday Night Live has concluded its most recent seasons on both sides of the pond! Both SNL US and UK broadcast their finales on May 16, which means it's time to find out what the best musical performances were on both shows. I'll count down my Top 10 selections from SNL Season 51 and the Top 5 from SNL UK Season 1, and play clips from some of the highlights from each season.

Before that, though, I'll share some of the highlights from my visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to see the SNL 50 exhibit!

We continue our examination of the year 1986 by talking about the albums that were released in the second half of the year. Metal and rap were reigning supreme with releases from Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer, and The Beastie Boys, but pop and rock offered up some really strong records as well with major releases from Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Berlin, The Pretenders, REM, Huey Lewis and the News, and Sparks. Even The Monkees made a huge comeback for their 20th Anniversary!

We’re diving headfirst into the first six months of 1986! Join us as we rewind to January through June and relive the music that made 1986 one of the most memorable years of the decade. It was a time when rock and rap were colliding, metal was still reigning supreme, the Minneapolis funk sound was coming into its own, and pop soundtracks were turning lesser-known bands into superstars!

We cover juggernaut releases like Janet Jackson's Control, Peter Gabriel's So, Van Halen's 5150, and Metallica's Master of Puppets, as well as albums by The Bangles, Ozzy, Elvis Costello, Depeche Mode, Judas Priest, Prince, Run D.M.C., and many others, plus soundtracks such as Pretty in Pink, Labyrinth, and Krush Groove.

The sale features nearly 700 items from icons such as Johnny Cash (the guitar he played at his Grand Ole Opry debut in 1956), Ace Frehley (many items including his main Les Paul), Elvis Presley (a stage-used microphone), many Beatles items (including a table and chair set owned by Ringo Starr), a large collection of original paintings by Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, and many more rare and iconic items.

These are tracks that got airplay on Album Oriented Rock radio stations back in the day but have mostly been left behind, frozen like a moment in time.

Super Bowl 60 was held on February 8, featuring a halftime show by Latin superstar Bad Bunny (with special guests Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin), and a pre-game performance by neo-punks Green Day. But in reaction against this, there was a second, independant "All American" halftime show featuring Kid Rock, Gabby Barrett, Lee Brice, and Brantley Gilbert. Both shows had their controversies and both are products of our current political environment. We talk about both of these, plus dive into the history of Super Bowl halftime shows and talk about some of our favorite past performances.

Heart's debut album, Dreamboat Annie, was released 50 years ago on February 14, 1976. This week we look back at the legacy and career of one of the most important and trailblazing American rock bands. The Police are back in the headlines—but not for the reasons fans might hope. A lawsuit involving the band members is nearing its conclusion, and this week Stephanie, Rob, and Alan dig into what we know about the case, unpacking the details of the suit and where each of the three musicians fits into it.

That said, it’s not all legal drama. We also take a joyful detour through our favorite Police concert memories, argue the merits of beloved songs and albums, and fondly revisit the glory days of MTV, when the band seemed to be everywhere.

DAVID BOWIE had a lenthy career, spanning from the first single he released in 1964 to his final album in 2016. January 2026 marks the tenth anniversary of his passing, and to commemorate the occasion we are joined by author Don Klees to talk about his book On Track: David Bowie 1983 - 2016, which covers every album and every single from the second half of his career. We discuss Bowie's works between Let's Dance and Blackstar. We talk about the brilliance of Outside and Earthling, and Alan finally gets the definitive answer to a burning question: "Is Never Let Me Down as bad a most of the fans say it is?"

John talks about the influence of MTV on film (and vice versa) and what made the 80s a special time for film music.

After a 52-year absence, Buckingham Nicks,the debut album by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, has finally been reissued in a newly remastered form. July 13 is the 40th Anniversary of LIVE AID, one of the greatest rock festivals of all time! We each share our memories of watching it live on the day, the excitement that surrounded the event, and some of the stories behind bands that didn't appear for various reasons. Each of us has picked our five favorite performances / bands / moments to talk about at length, and we mention some of the lowlights as well (and yes, there were a few). Some of the acts that get a mention are Duran Duran, Black Sabbath, Madonna, Run DMC, Elton John, the Who, Simple Minds, Judas Priest, Tom Petty, the Pretenders, and many others. In nearly every case when you see a classic band in concert now, it's not the original line-up. Does that dampen your experience? Many legacy bands currently on the road are down to only one original member--and a few have none. Is it still the band if no one who started that band or wrote the iconic music is involved? Is there a key member whose absence has too great an impact? Rob and Alan discuss those questions and more in this week's episode! We cite some big-name examples, like Rush, Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Yes, Kansas, Asia (who are back in the news with a new line-up and record label), The Beach Boys, and more.

This week Rob and Alan chat with author Iain Key about his new book All the Young Punks: A People's History of the Clash, an oral history of one of the most seminal bands in modern music. Iain is well-known to Louder Than War regulars as the presenter of his own Indie Brunch show on Louder Than War Radio, and in his first foray as a published author, he indulges his fascination with his favourite Punk icons to great effect. In our discussion, we talk about what made the Clash unique, why they connected with such a broad audience, their rise in popularity in America, and a whole lot more.

The Kinks was one of the most influential bands to come out of England in the 60s, with a career that lasted up through the late 90s. Their style and sound changed numerous times over the decades and they amassed a legion of dedicated fans. We talk with author / editor Chris Kocher about his new book, Thank You For The Days: Fans Of The Kinks Share 60 Years Of Stories, which celebrates the band's legacy and fans' special connection to it. Among the contributors are Ron Sexsmith, Glen Burtnick, John Wesley Harding, Crouch End Festival Chorus musical director David Temple, plus touring musicians, fan club leaders, and "average Joe" fans with extraordinary stories.

40 years ago, one of the greatest concert films ever made was released: STOP MAKING SENSE by the Talking Heads. The film has recently been re-released in a beautifully remastered format by A24. Anthony, Stephanie, Rob and Alan review in-depth the new release of this classic film which captures a band at the height of their confidence; We'll talk about the first time we ever saw the film, our favorite songs, the supporting musicians, why this film is so important, and how it compares to David Byrne's more recent concert film, American Utopia. We're joined by author ROB DREW, whose new book Unspooled: How the Cassette Made Music Shareable examines the enormous impact that cassettes had on the music industry and cultural landscape. Our conversation ranges from the art and science of mix tapes to indie metal and punk bands who spread their music via cassettes, and from how the cassette changed the way artists recorded albums to congressional hearings to decide if home taping should be illegal.

1984 was an incredible year for music, and it was a particularly strong year for hard rock and metal. We're joined by guests Courtland Lewis and Matt Alschbach of the Rock and Metal Profs Podcast for a great discussion of what factors made 1984 such a highwater mark for the genre, and we review some of our favorite releases of the year. Filmmaker Olivia Serafini-Sauli hung around the New York music scene in the 90s, and she always had her camera at the ready. So when her friends in the band The New Rising Sons were on the verge of having all their dreams come true, she was there to chronicle it. However, in spite of sold out shows, a major label record deal, and a debut album recorded at a legendary studio, the band's dream came to a sudden end.

Now, 30 years later, the debut NRS album has finally been released on Arctic Rodeo Recordings, and Olivia has taken all of her archival footage plus brand new interviews with band members, producers, record execs, and our very own Stephanie Seymour (who was a friend of the band and worked at Virgin Records when they were signed) to tell the complete story of the New Rising Sons.

Rock fans would have first gotten to know Michael Cartellone from his work as the drummer in the band Damn Yankees with Tommy Shaw, Jack Blades, and Ted Nugent. After that, he joined the band Accept, and since 1999 he has been the drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd, with whom he has toured extensively and played on eight albums. He’s worked with many other artists over the years, like Peter Frampton, John Fogerty, Freddie Mercury, and Eddie Jobson. But he’s also an accomplished visual artist. His work has been featured on NBC, CBS, CNN, twice on the cover of Fine Arts Magazine, and in a full-page article in The Washington Post. His work has had Gallery Exhibitions in New York City (Soho), Los Angeles, Phoenix, Long Island, and Las Vegas, and will be featured in a new exhibition called Bella Italia, this May in Asheville, NC. In our interview, we talk about both his music and art career, his time in Damn Yankees, some of our favorite paintings, his love for Charlie Chaplin films, and much more.

This week we have the privilege of speaking with Ian Wright of the band The Jack Rubies! The band first hit the scene in the mid-80s with a series of British singles. After signing to TVT Records, they released two full-length albums, Fascinatin' Vacation in 1988 and See The Money in My Smilein 1990. They're now back, 34 years later, with their new album Clocks Are Out of Timeon Big Stir Records. We talk with Ian about the band's history, the new deal with Big Stir, the journey to regain control of their masters from TVT, and how the new album was put together across two continents in the middle of a global pandemic.

Following the 1985 American Music Awards, the reigning elite of pop music all convened at A&M Studios to record the vocals for what would become one of the biggest singles in music history, "We Are the World". Spearheaded by Harry Belafonte, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson, the session gathered together some of the most successful and legendary artists of the day -- Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Bette Midler, the Pointer Sisters, Kenny Loggins, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson and more, plus some of the newer superstars on the scene, including Huey Lewis and the News, Cyndi Lauper, and Sheila E -- to record a song that would be used to raise money for the extreme famine happening in Ethiopia. And it's all captured in the new documentary "The Greatest Night in Pop" about the making of "We Are the World", available on Netflix.

On March 18, 1974 the debut album by Canadian power trio RUSH was released. Since then, they have become one of the biggest bands in the world, with a fanbase unlike any other. This week, Alan is joined by Gerry Schramm of the Something For Nothing podcast, and Vicki Hudson, lead vocalist of the tribute band The Spirit of Rush, to talk about that debut album, and our deep and abiding love for Rush. We discuss some favorite concert memories, working within the Rush fan community, our favorite album from every decade of Rush's career, and of course, Rush Mustard.

On February 11, Beyonce surprise-released a new country-western single, "Texas Hold 'Em", along with a second song "16 Carriages", the first two singles from her upcoming country music album. The song became the first recording by a Black woman to gain the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, despite some country radio stations initially refusing to play it. Rob and Alan, joined by good buddy JM Tuffley, take a listen to the new songs and turn the conversation to other artists who have crossed genre lines in their career, like David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Ray Charles, and many others (even Ethel Merman!).

The Beatles, like most bands, started out as a cover band, but became arguably the most covered musical act in history. You can find covers of Beatles songs in literally every genre of music. This week, we talk about many of our favorite covers of Beatles classics, including different versions of "Helter Skelter"; weird covers by Tiny Tim, The Flaming Lips, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Tori Amos; Beatles songs transformed into county, soul, jazz, and metal; Christmas songs by The Fab Four; new versions of songs from various soundtracks (Sgt Pepper, Yesterday, Across the Universe); and much more. With the release of "Now and Then", the new single from The Beatles, comes reissues of the iconic two-volume collection, 1962 - 1966 (The Red Album) and 1967 - 1970(The Blue Album). Rex, the Pretty Things, Black Sabbath, the Alan Parsons Project, Yes, Genesis, Electric Light Orchestra, Rainbow, Styx, Wishbone Ash, UFO, 10cc, Bad Company, AC/DC, Scorpions, The Nice, and many others. Their career is chronicled in the new documentary Squaring the Circle, available on AppleTV, and is highly recommended.

WE'RE BACK! After a week off for Dragon Con (which Alan and Rob were attending), the Modern Musicology team is back with a new episode celebrating the 50th anniversary of the birth of HIP-HOP! 50 years ago, Cindy Campbell threw a party in the rec room of her family’s Bronx apartment building at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue and charged admission (.25 for ladies, 50 for fellas) to raise money to buy back-to-school clothes, and she asked her older brother Clive (later known as Kool Herc) to DJ. Using two turntables and a stack of classic soul and funk records, he and his buddy Coke la Rock shouted out spontaneous rhymes over the instrumental breaks. And with that, a new phenomenon was born.

We talk about our own journeys with rap and hip-hop, our first exposures to it, some of the standout acts that we love, favorite albums, and a lot more.

The 27 Club

There have been a shocking number of artists who have all died at the same very young age, early into what was already a hugely successful and influential career, but should have been a long and legendary career. They are The 27 Club. We discuss the major figures that the public most associates with this club -- Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse -- but we bring in a bunch of other members as well, like artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan of the Grateful Dead, D. Boon of The Minutemen, Echo and the Bunnymen drummer Pete de Freitas, Mia Zapata of the Gits, Kristen Pfaff of Hole, actor Anton Yelchin, and more. We discuss why there's a 27 Club (when there could equally be a 26 Club or a 28 Club, etc) and why people have historically been so fascinated by it.

The musical archaeologists of Modern Musicology are on an expedition to uncover albums that are celebrating 45th Anniversaries -- The Albums of 1978! It was a great year with amazing game-changing debuts from Prince, Van Halen, The Police, The Cars, Kate Bush, Generation X, Devo, and many more. It was a big year for Disco and Funk. Two metal and hard rock institutions (Rainbow and Black Sabbath) both faced crossroads in their career. This week, we are excited to welcome Gary Clark to the show! Gary began his career in the late '80s as front person of the Scottish band Danny Wilson, writing and singing the band's 1987 international hit "Mary's Prayer.” Throughout the ‘90s and 2000s, he recorded one solo album and two albums as a member of King L and Transister, while also songwriting and producing for many other artists, including Natalie Imbruglia, Liz Phair, Lloyd Cole, Melanie C, The Veronicas, McFly, The Wanted, Demi Lovato, and many more. In 2016, he wrote or co-wrote the original songs and score for John Carney's movie Sing Street. His song “Drive It Like You Stole It” has won multiple awards and just placed at #11 in Rolling Stone's Best Songs by Fake Artists list. He's won multiple songwriting awards, and his songs have appeared in a wide variety of TV shows and movies like There's Something About Mary, Charlie’s Angels, Grey's Anatomy, Teen Wolf, and Pretty Little Liars. He was executive music producer/composer on two seasons of Amazon's Modern Love. He teamed up again with John Carney to create the songs and score for Carney’s latest movie Flora and Son, which previewed at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival to rapturous reviews. He's currently the composer and co-lyricist of the forthcoming Nanny McPhee musical with Dame Emma Thompson!

This week Alan and Stephanie -- joined by Steph's husband Bob Perry -- chat with Theresa Kereakes, one of the 150 or so core members of the original LA punk rock scene. Theresa began taking photos at a very young age, and by extension, she chronicled the early LA punk scene with her camera. Her famous photos were used on many of the punk albums from that era and have been shown all over the country in an exhibit called Unguarded Moments: Backstage and Beyond. They also appear in three coffee table books: Punk 365, The Official Punk Rock Book of Lists, and a history of the Bomp! label and magazine. Join us as Theresa brings us back to those early days of the scene with some wildly entertaining stories and insider details that you've never heard before. She tells stories about her encounters with Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Blondie, The Bangles (when they were still called The Bangs), The Go-Go's, X, The Ramones, The Damned, and many others.

Hear stories about the early successes like Van Halen and Quiet Riot that paved the way for the metal wave; bands that made it big from the Sunset Strip scene, like Motley Crue, Guns 'n' Roses, Winger, Ratt and WASP; some of the bands that were active on the scene that never quite broke big, and even some of the older bands like KISS, Ozzy and Alice Cooper who were inspirations for these younger bands but now had to compete with them for album sales and concert audiences.

Richard Evans is the author of the new book Listening to the Music the Machines Make: Inventing Electronic Pop 1978-1983. This definitive book explores how krautrock, disco, glam rock, and punk inspired an electronic pop revolution and how that revolution went on to establish the foundations for hip-hop, house, and EDM, and tells the stories of the movement’s underground pioneers and its superstars: from Devo, The Normal, Telex, and Cabaret Voltaire to Gary Numan, OMD, Duran Duran, and Depeche Mode. In our interview, we learn about the earliest experiments in electronic compositions, the importance of Kraftwerk, the impact of David Bowie, the influence of "I Feel Love", and much more.

What happens when one of the most successful and most influential bands ever, which literally changed the face of music, breaks up? Well, if you're a Beatle, you go on to an equally important and prosperous solo career. In this episode, the Modern Musicology gang takes a look at the post-Beatles careers of George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. On January 1st, Rolling StoneMagazine published their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time, and caused a good bit of controversy by doing so. Fans of certain artists were up in arms that their fave was omitted from the list. The Modern Musicology gang has our own take on it, and of course we had to weigh in! Should Bono really be on the list? Should Ozzy Osborne be ranked so much higher than Ronnie James Dio? Is Billie Eilish simply too young to qualify? And what about rap? 1977 was a landmark year for a lot of reasons: Disco is in full swing, culminating in the release of Saturday Night Fever and the opening of Studio 54, but along with that we have punk rock making a huge global push, the release of one of the biggest selling albums in music history, one artist having to follow up the surprise hit of the previous year, and most significantly the death of a 50s icon weeks before a New Wave artist of the same name makes his debut. We discuss the enormous and lasting impact of 1977 and talk about artists like The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Peter Frampton, Iggy Pop, Donna Summer, KISS, Styx, Rush, plus many more -- and of course there's no way you can talk about 1977 without mentioning Rumours by Fleetwood Mac.

This was supposed to be a week off for the Modern Musicology gang! Alan, Rob and Anthony were at Dragon Con in Atlanta all weekend, and there wasn't an opportunity for the four of us to record a new episode. But I came home from the convention on Monday and had the opportunity to watch the entire Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert, and I really wanted to record a review. So I called up my good friend Vicki Hudson, lead singer of the RUSH tribute band The Spirit of Rush, who had watched the concert live!

We talk about The Spirit of Rush, Vicki's published works, and some of our favorite performances from the Tribute show, like Paul McCartney, Rush, Queen, Stewart Copeland, Brian Johnson, Supergrass, The Pretenders, and of course The Foo Fighters.
