This is true kinship with animals, a podcast that offers you stories, conversations and possibilities on how you might deepen your relationship with animals and relate to them through a new place of understanding. It’s also a reminder that true kinship is how you participate, not how others receive it. My name is Janet Roper, podcast host and your companion on this journey.
This episode covers the connection between the colonial standard of perfectionism and true kinship with animals. We’ll be exploring ways we can simply be with animals MINUS that perfectionistic lens and diving into some rabbit holes about perfection and our relationship with animals.

This episode addresses navigating rough spots when you come across folx who may not be open to hearing about true kinship.
Episode Quotes
“As a matter of fact true kinship is the antithesis of a colonized system. It’s not a one-size-fits-all practice. Rather it is different things to different people at different times.”

This episode addresses our human tendency to infantilize animals when we only see them as cute. Later in the episode I’ll be telling you about a book I’m writing on grieving the loss of animal family members and then requesting we work in reciprocity with the free online content I offer.
Episode Quotes
“I’m not sure why, because it’s a basic truth that I do not spider as well as Spider nor hedgehog as well as Hedgehog and neither do you.”
“True kinship with animals works to eliminate the need to experience animals like humans in animal form. They are not. They are their own species with their own integrity and agency.

Episode Quotes
“It’s a relief to not have to downplay my relationship with animals and true kinship and what they are to me. It’s cathartic to be with an animal in kinship and not as a human overseer or master. Justifications are a thing of the past.”

On this episode of The True Kinship With Animals Podcast, I’m sharing a connection I see between true kinship and Lord of the Rings.
This podcast gives you stories, conversations and suggestions on how you can deepen your relationship with animals by freeing yourself from the inherited, colonized beliefs and assumptions we’ve all been socialized into and start relating to animals through a new place of understanding.
Episode Quotes
“We create community together as we journey along in true kinship. As a matter of fact, it’s our individuality that builds true kinship and encourages us to know the community in our unique perspective. How does it get better than that?”

On this episode of The True Kinship With Animals Podcast, frequent guest Deb Fate-Mental joins me in conversation about trivializing the weather and the effects that has nature.
Episode Quotes
Your teacup is full, I can’t fit anything more tea in it. The guy thought he knew everything. So you really have to commence this and try to exist within this beginner’s mind and of course it’s really difficult sometimes to get it. I’m often having to stop myself feeling but do I really know this? Do I really know what’s going on or can I learn something there. Can I soften and open myself to what’s really going on. And you know, that often happens with animals.

Does perfectionism have a spot in true kinship with animals? That probably depends on your cosmology and perspective. Perfectionism - that’s what we’re exploring in today’s episode of the True Kinship With Animals Podcast.
Episode Quotes
“Listen up folx, this is important: Animals are not an extension of our agency. But it’s so insidious how that assumption sneaks in!!! Here I was thinking I was doing the best I could for cat Raven, having his best interest at heart, and at the same time I was invalidating his agency.”
“Then I had the sudden realization — like a light bulb going on — that’s not realistic. That’s an illusion that points the spotlight on ME and what I want, what I think our life together SHOULD be. It left Raven’s wants and needs out of the picture and assumed he wanted what I did.”
“I don’t know about you, but I don’t spider nearly as well as a spider does.”

Wondering about what reciprocal relationship looks like with animals? You’re in the right place - that’s what we’re covering in this episode!
Episode Quotes
“Reciprocal kinship is not about you, it not about getting your needs met. It’s not about what you think you’re entitled to receive from the animal. That’s privilege.”
“Kinship involves reciprocity. We all claim we practice this, because that is our intent. But when we examine our actions closer and with an honest appraisal, are we practicing reciprocity or entitlement?”

In this episode we’re talking about some changes we humans can make in practicing true kinship with animals.
Episode Quotes
“You're sentient, the animals are sentient, it's time to come together.
Come together is such a nebulous phrase though, isn't it? I mean you already live with them, care for them, love, honor and respect them. What more is there to coming together?”

This episode explores the vast topic of how you’re supported while you’re grieving animal family members. Because you don’t have to be alone.
Episode Quotes
“It’s easy to forget we humans need care too. We need tending, nurturing, conversation, community and support. We need witnessing, not fixing.”
Janet Roper
“What would it be like to have a support team, both in every day life and online, that you reach out to when you’re feeling the need to have your grief witnessed, acknowledged or even held for you until you’re ready to take on the grief mantle again?”

With us today is guest Angel Sullivan. Angel is here to be a light in the darkness, and to remind you of yours. She’s also here to build and re-build mutually beneficial nourishing connections with people of all kinds (human and non-human). she does that in lots of ways, but the most present in the moment are the lenses of archetypal astrology and a deep and visceral awareness of Death as an ally in life. Her websites are listed in the show links below.
Episode Quotes
“I feel a connection. Not only with that person, but with Life in general. THIS is part of Ordinary Magick for me. When I'm paying attention in this way, everything becomes enlivened and my life becomes more magick-full.”
~Angel Sullivan
“That - truly - the only way this world is going to change (including all the things we are seeing and don't like seeing) is if each of us is brave enough to step into our full beingness and our Truth. That includes how we're interacting with each other (and not just human others).”

Today’s episode is all about true kinship with animals stories. That’s a story about how you coexist with animals so that you’re no longer the “owner” and they’re no longer the “pet”. In other words, moving from power-over to relationship-with animals. There’s one story about a cat and another about a horse.
Episode Quotes
““That coat - and I still have it and wear it - is laden with memories from when horse Shiloh and I came together in 1998. It has 18 years of Shiloh chewing on it, pulling on it, slobbering on it, spitting unwanted medicine on it, dribbling water on it and rubbing up against it. And the smell, it still carries his smell, as faint as it’s becoming.”
“This podcast is devoted to helping you show up in the world for animals from the fullness of your authentic self. encouraging you to look at your relationship with animals differently so that a new place of understanding begins to open for you.” Host Janet Roper

Episode Quotes
“Up here in the Northeast we’ve had beavers come back, and I’ve been to several places where beavers have been at work for 5-6 years, and have created this liminal space and it’s no longer just a pond, but the beavers have created space for not only animals to return, but liminal beings to come back.” Guest Deb Fate Mental
“She’s very fancy, her name is Fancy……she grew these long elaborate fins, she’s very interactive with me. It’s interesting to watch how she interacts with humans.” Guest Deb Fate Mental

It still is and yet it has changed now that I am doing it solo. Here’s my story of what that’s like for me.

Welcome to True Kinship with Animals where we believe we all do better when ALL creatures do better. I’m your host Janet Roper and each week you’ll hear stories and suggestions on how you can begin to dismantle your connection with colonized influences so that you can deepen your relationship with animals, moving you from ownership to true kinship, one animal at a time.
On today’s episode we’re joined by guest Kelley Harrell. Kelley is an animist, author, and deathwalker living on Sissipihaw and Tuscarora land in North Carolina. She writes The Weekly Rune and hosts the podcast What in the Wyrd.

Before we get started today, I have an announcement - I’ve created a companion podcast to this one! It’s True Kinship with Animals: In Short, a mini podcast that gives you bite sized tidbits of true kinship in 3 minutes or less. It’s available on most podcast platforms and I encourage you to give it a listen! It comes out a couple of times a week, so be sure to give it a like so you’ll know when a new one is available.
In today's episode we’re talking about ethics, consent and permission when we’re connecting with animals. This is a complex conversation, yet a necessary one. Why? Because our colonized society supports the hierarchal structure of humans having dominion over animals.

On this episode of True Kinship With Animals podcast, we are talking about the connection you have with your beyond-human neighbors: the animals in your local ecosystem. I don’t know about you, but when I consider we have a shared, daily, physical reality with the animals it sure makes it easier to be in true kinship with them, instead of claiming power-over.

Do you ever get stuck in knowing how to be with animals?
I mean how do you be with an animal without your mind jumping to the ‘shoulds’, the ’what ifs’ and the comparisons to other people and the lives they have with their animals?
Another way to put it is how to simply be with animals MINUS the perfectionistic lens we humans are so good at using? That’s what we’re diving into on today’s episode.

In today’s episode we going to go deeper into the topic of love, human entitlement and animals using the egocentric lens. We’re also talking about the Bandwagon Fallacy. Follow along, because I believe you too will see a connection between entitlement, the egocentric lens, the Bandwagon Fallacy and how they manipulate our relationship with animals and our love for them.

Today we’re focusing on domesticated animals - our animal family. How do you show up for your animal family? Ha, I bet you're saying right now, "Janet that's a no-brainer! I know how I show up for my animal family!”
True, you do, and yet there are so. many. different. ways. to show up for them.

In today’s episode I’m going to share with you a story my guides told me I was to share with all. It’s the story about how eons ago we were in true kinship with animals, how that was lost and how it is returning.
But first, some background on true kinship, animism and the lens I use as I talk about this.

What’s true for you when it comes to the animals in your life?
The reason I ask this is because we are influenced by so many outside sources that it can be easy to unconsciously abandon your own truth and agency for someone else’s.
That surrender sneaks up slowly, it is often subtle and insidious. You think you’re living your truth and the next thing you know it has taken a back seat in a discussion you participated in online. How the heck did that happen???

It's not going to be a big surprise to you, but we humans are awfully good at being human. Some of our best qualities shine forth when we are using our creativity, our integrity, our compassion, or intelligence or our wit, just to name a few. These qualities can definitely aide us on our journey to being in true kinship with animals.
But then, on the other hand, we have other qualities that pop up and stand in the way of our being in true kinship with animals. Today one of those qualities we’re going to deep dive into is entitlement.

Thanks for your patience with the sound - I didn’t realize I had placed the mic incorrectly.
Today’s episode is a tad different than the previous ones, as it’s coming from a more personal and practical spin. I want to take the time to introduce myself and to share with you in far more detail how I show up and support true kinship with animals to the world at large. Also covered is how being in true kinship with animals is moving from an egocentric to ecocentric state of being.

In this episode we’re tackling the common, everyday language we use when we are referring to our domesticated animals and the relationship we have with them. Common words we use like ‘pet’, ‘owner’, ‘fur-kid’, ‘dog mom’ are outdated, inadequate and unsatisfactory. These words create a hierarchy - one of humans having power over animals. This is the antithesis of true kinship and animism as it doesn’t permit or even encourage equality between the species.
