A quick note on labelling our thoughts.
Thoughts are a predominant part of our reality and sometimes take a higher precedence than the reality we’re truly experiencing. Sliding into the truth of who we are and creating space around our thoughts are important steps to not being dragged down under the heavy flow of thoughts when they take us over. It takes a bit of practice, but once you’re aware of how circular and often pointless your thoughts are you can begin to take back the energy you waste on continual thinking.
For our questions this week-
What do I find myself thinking about the most?
Am I able to change or manage my thinking when it gets on certain topics?
Does my mood or emotions change when I think about certain things?
What topics of thinking cause me the greatest emotional changes?
For our shadow practice we look at the act of labelling our thoughts to create more awareness, and then our grounding exercise involves creating bubbles around our thoughts and letting them float away.

A quick note on Acceptance-
The most important thing to remember about acceptance is that you don’t have to accept everything, you only have to accept this moment.
For our journal questions this week we ask ourselves-
What is one thing I will never accept?
What do I feel like I don’t deserve that happens to me?
How do I feel when I think something that is happening shouldn’t happen?
Does thinking something shouldn’t happen cause me stress?
For our shadow practice we are using accepting statements and seeing how this feels in our body, and for our grounding exercise we use EFT with similar statements. Here is more on EFT:

A quick note on the Ancestral Wound-
Ancestral or collective wounds can be handed down by many types of group. Sometimes it’s beliefs that come from our immediate family, sometimes our extended family, or even ethnic or cultural groups that you connect with. Often these wounds aren’t blindingly apparent until we confront why we do the things we do as a group, and we scrutizine our subconscious beliefs around what will happen if we alter our course away from the group.
We investigate this topic, creating awareness with these questions-
Are there beliefs that have been passed down to you through your family?
What kind of things are expected of you as part of your family?
What happens to people who don’t follow the expectations of your family?
Do you carry fear around family beliefs and expectations?
For our shadow practice we set up a ritual space to allow us to connect to our ancestral energies.
And for our grounding exercise we use water to allow any trapped, stagnant energy to be washed away.

A quick note on the Mother Wound-
When we grow up without a person to teach us about our feminine energy, we miss out on all the things this feminine energy is needed for in every day life. This energy is fundamental in our ability to connect and feel part of the world around us. Counter-intuitively, sometimes this lack of awareness of our connection can lead us to having poor boundaries with the people around us in order to try to create that connection we feel like we’re lacking. And it’s important to remember the need for awareness of our feminine energy extends to all people, male-identifying, female-identifying, and non-binery. Feminine and masculine energy are fundamental in all living things.
We start with our journal questions-
What role did your mother play in your life?
What role do you wish she had played?
How would your life be different if she had been this way?
Are there any characteristics of your mother in you?
Do you feel positively or negatively towards these characteristics?
For our shadow practice we use positive affirmations to start playing the mother role in our own lives and to create a more loving connection with ourselves.
Our grounding exercises involves feeling our connection to all things in through meditation.

A quick note on Venus-
Venus is most often associated with the feminine aspect, which is not to say it only exists as women, although it can often represent them in a chart. But on a deeper level Venus represents the feminine energy that exists in all people and behaves as a counter balance to our masculine energy. On the surface Venus represents things like money, love, and beauty, but deeper down in our psychs it becomes the energy or drive to connect to the world around us. For whatever reason masculine energy has become the dominant energy in society today. We take pride in separating ourselves out from the pack and getting ahead, as the masculine energy inspires us to. But we crave that feminine connection energy on a deeper level. In fact, many people who are more weighted towards their masculine energy speak of feelings of loneliness, a common side effect of not experiencing our feminine connective energy as fully as we would like to.
Today we look at Venus through the chart to see how we connect with other people and the world around us, for better or for worse.
I’ve included time stamps if you wish to skip ahead to your sign, and if you’re not sure which sign your Venus is in watch the Introduction video of the Astrology and Shadow Work series to find out how to look up your chart.

A quick note on the Father Wound-
The wounding we receive from our fathers is usually associated with neglect, abuse, or sometimes a simple lack of effort, but the father wound is actually something far deeper and yet simpler than that. Our father wound is our lack of access to the masculine energy we all carry, and our ability to use it. While the term masculine has become highly polarized by over 2000 years of patriarchy, masculine energy itself is simply the drive to move up and out, and to set ourselves apart from where we are now. In our lives that can play into the desire to achieve goals, look after our needs, or transform ourselves into who we think we truly are. When we carry a father wound we lack access to that energy and can suffer from feelings of worthlessness and a belief that we don’t deserve to be happy. Of course none of these things are true, but it can be difficult programming to overcome if we don’t even know its there.
These week in shadow practice we ask ourselves-
What role has your father played in your life?
What role do you wish he had played?
How would your life be different if he had been this way?
Are there any characteristics of your father in you?
Do you feel positively or negatively towards these characteristics?
For our shadow practice we use a “talking to a chair” practice similar to this one- https://www.soulshepherding.org/father-wounds-and-longings/ although in my recording I do not go into the more religion specific aspects.
For our grounding exercise we do a five count breath to bring our focus back to the breath.

A quick note on Exploring Self- There are many levels of self- spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, as well as variations on these too subtle to be defined. But underneath it all there is a true self. They say “The truth is what exists whether you believe in it or not.” and the true self is very much like that, it is not something the mind can comprehend because it is greater than mind. It is very common for our minds to try to deny this part of ourselves (as it likes to hide and deny many things), but when we practice things like meditation and sitting in awareness we allow ourselves to sit in our true self where things like judgements and criticisms have little sway. It’s a powerful place to exist from.
In today’s journal section we ask questions to help us become aware of our true self-
Who am I?
How would I describe me?
If any of these things changed or ceased to exist would I no longer be me?
Am I the same person I was when I was born? or 10 years ago? 1 year ago? 1 week ago?
Does the opinion of others change who I am?
For our shadow practice we look at separating out ourselves from our story and then we end our practice by physically grounding in something that we can experience strongly such as dirt, sand, or water (grass would work too!) to come back to ourselves.

A quick note on Setting Boundaries- the most important thing to remember is that boundaries are not for other people- They are for yourself. Boundaries teach us where other people stop and where we begin. They teach us that we deserve kindness, consideration, and happiness. It’s tempting to use boundaries to try to get what we want from other people. We often think if we just tell people to treat us a certain way they will respect us and love us how we deserve to be loved. But sometimes all a boundary can do is teach us when it’s time to walk away for the sake of ourselves and show ourselves what treatment we are worthy of. Don’t worry if you boundaries feel greedy, needy, or demanding at first. That’s just our conditioning trying to slow down our evolution. Boundaries will give you more time and energy to do what you need for yourself moving forward.
This week we journal with the questions-
What do people do that makes you feel taken advantage of?
What do people do that makes you feel violated?
What am I afraid will happen if I tell them to stop?
Was I allowed to have boundaries as a child?
For our shadow practice we write boundary contracts for ourselves to practice defining our own limits, and then for our grounding exercise we meditate on feeling both solid and borderless to become aware of our existence on a physical level.

A quick note on Honouring our Needs-
We live in a world of wants. We want the latest and the greatest, the brightest and the fastest, but in all the shiny newness around us we often lose sight of our deeper needs, sometimes to the point where we forget they exist at all. It’s important to take time to hear what really matters to us. Distracting objects can make us happy temporarily, but it’s the meeting ourselves at the baser level that will help us build a foundation for more permanent peace and joy.
In today’s shadow work we journal about these needs and what may prevent us from meeting them. We ask ourselves-
Do I have needs?
Do these needs get met?
Do other people help meet my needs?
Do other people work against my needs?
Was I taught my needs don’t matter?
Our shadow practice focuses on brain storming needs and using a spider diagram to find opportunities to meet them in a clear visual way that allows us to focus on the smaller steps we can take now.
For our grounding exercise we focus on one object and practice returning to it, teaching our minds to let go of other distractions.

A quick note on Inner Child Work- Some of us never had the chance to experience a real childhood, and even if you are someone who did have a decent childhood there’s still a possibility part of what you needed was never received. For some reason people carry a lot of shame around feeling like what their childhood lacked was their own fault, like some inherent internal flaw was the cause of them never having their needs met. And this belief carries into adulthood, preventing us from asking for and giving ourselves the simple things we need like unconditional love and patient kindness. It is important in doing inner child work to recognize that we never have to do anything to earn these things, even if the people in our lives gave us a different message early on. Taking care of our inner child is an important part of allowing ourselves to move forward in the ways we truly want to and release the guilt and shame we carry in our deepest selves. This week in practice we ask ourselves- What do you think you missed out on as a child? What do you wish you had received as a kid? How would your life be different if you received these things? Why do you think you didn’t receive these things? For our shadow practice we work with the exercise from Meredith Lane’s book- Inner Child Work: 20 Exercises for Healing Your inner Child. (Link- https://www.scribd.com/book/413176454/Inner-Child-Work-20-Exercises-for-Healing-Your-Inner-Child) and look at some of our favourite past times before we absorbed all our conditioned outlooks on life. A quick note on Avoiding Emotions- The desire to not feel unpleasant emotions in a strong desire I feel most of us may not even realize dictates behaviours and choices we make throughout our lives. I’ve heard on many occasions from clients they have a fear of letting in sadness or anger because they are afraid those emotions will take over and never leave. The contrary truth to this is that by avoiding emotions they get backed up like rush hour traffic and end up ruining days, weeks, or even years of our lives. All this avoidance often prevents us from trying to get a job we want, asking out that person we like, or trying something new and unfamiliar. In this way and many other ways it is our avoided emotions that have all the power in our life and pull our strings from off stage. Today we face these emotions squarely by asking ourselves the journal questions- What emotion do you avoid experiencing the most? Why don’t you want to feel it? How do you avoid feeling it? Do you notice any side effects from avoiding it? Are there any memories associated with this emotion?
For our shadow practice we take 5 minutes out of our day to listen to a song in the theme of that emotion and fully allowing ourselves to experience the emotion. I have included links below to playlists others have made in the theme of those emotions but if you use your own songs and make your own playlist it will be more personal.
For our ground practice we investigated silence, stillness, and spaciousness as taught by Eckhart Tolle. A link to one of his videos on the topic here- https://youtu.be/PkF4kA2ZT70 Playlists:

A quick note on Mars-
Mars is predominantly a planet that symbolizes our masculine energy. What masculine energy stands for has become heavily skewed by society until it’s reached the point where we’ve very much lost the main thread of meaning. There is a lot of fear around being “too masculine” or “not masculine enough” in society, but it’s a fact that all people contain masculine and feminine energy. When we look at it in it’s simplest terms we can see that masculine energy is simply the desire to go forward and set ourselves apart.
Mars takes a lot of it’s association from the god Mars. Mars is the god of war, but even before that he was the god of agriculture. That element of drive and setting itself apart is seen in the plant pushing through the earth to live.
The last element of Mars is the drive to protect- In this desire to strike out and the desire to shield ourselves we must find a balance between the two extremes in our lives.
Finding out about our Mars through the zodiac signs teaches us about the flavour of our Mars and how it acts in our lives.
I’ve included time stamps if you wish to skip ahead to your sign, and if you’re not sure which sign your Mars is in watch the Introduction video of the Astrology and Shadow Work series to find out how to look up your chart.

A quick note on Codependency and Addiction- I’m focusing on codependency in this post because I feel like it's one of the most strongly promoted addiction in society today. How do I know it’s an addiction? Because it’s something we focus on to bring us eternal happiness which never arrives. Addictions are actually a symptom of a bigger issue and not the original problem, and I think this is something that is hidden by referring to addiction as a disease. The underlying issue comes from a fear of being with ourselves, whether this relates to buried shame or an unconscious feeling of worthlessness, this fear manifests into addictions with the main drive to avoid looking directly at this self-shame. The addictions come in two forms. One is an avoidant addiction, these are our drug or drinking habits, mindless social media scrolling, and constant need for relationships and interactions with people. We can’t pay attention to the parts of ourselves we don’t like if we’re too distracted by something else. The other end of the spectrum is the addiction that involves trying to improve ourselves- fitness or diet addictions, and workaholism. In this addiction there is a hope we won’t have to deal with our inner shame if we just make ourselves better. This is not to imply any of these activities can’t be done in moderation, but if the need to do the activity is driven by an underlying discomfort it is most likely the sign of an addiction. In today’s practice we dig into our underlying issues driving our addictions with our journalling questions- How do I feel when I’m alone? What am I afraid will happen when I’m alone? What activity do I find myself doing even when I don’t want to? Where do I feel discomfort in my body if I’m not distracting myself? Do I feel ashamed or worthless when I think about myself? For our shadow practice today we look into the mirror and ask ourselves “Could I love myself?” This question is not meant to be a mentally stimulating, instead we want to ask it with the intention of feeling for the truth of this question, feel for the internal love and kindness we should possess towards ourselves. If you can’t feel it try to imagine it. This will help us develop the feeling. There may be some emotional energy blocking this feeling of love, in which case we need to be observing this energy and accepting it in to allow it to process. Our grounding practice involves feeling the energy in our body. Subscribe or follow us here (shadowcraftcult.com) for weekly practices and shadow work insights.

A quick note on Enemies-
We have heard it our whole lives- “Hate is a strong words.” “You don’t like them? Oh, you don’t really mean that…” But what is interesting to me (besides the obvious issue that we subconsciously feel the need to be nicer to other people than we’re ever taught to be to ourselves), is that historically enemies are some of the most transformative people in our lives. Another maybe easier word to swallow is the word opponent and that’s all an enemy is- someone who pushes against us in a way that forces us into a space outside our comfort zones. And even though we may hate it, this is the space where we evolve and grow. With shadow practice we get to investigate that space and find a productive way to use these relationships.
This week in shadow practice we look at why certain people feel like our enemies and in our journalling questions ask ourselves-
Who are our enemies?
Why do we hate (or dislike) them?
What characteristics do they have that frustrates us?
What characteristics do they have that we envy?
Is there a way we could emulate those characteristics that we envy that would be healthy and beneficial in our lives?
For our shadow practice with envision embracing our enemies, a challenging and transformative act that allows us to accept the parts of ourselves we repress. And for our final grounding exercise we practice a traditional Savasana (a yogic relaxation pose). I lead you through my technique in this practice but also include other practitioners' versions at the end of this post in case you wish to try an alternative version.

Astrology is a practice that raises strong opinions for understandable reasons, but I’m here to dispel some myths about astrology, so we can move forward to use the benefits of this practice in our shadow work.
Like most things in life there is nothing hype, media, and the urge to capitalize can’t drag down and tear apart. While astrology is an art that’s over two-thousand years old and has been practiced by some of our favourite deep thinkers such as Albert Einstein and Carl Jung, during the witch trials this practice understandably went underground. In the 20th century astrology had a minor revival when someone realized that astrology could be used to sell newspapers. What was originally a practice that took years of study to understand was boiled down into the most simplistic version of itself, what we know as sun sign astrology.
This creates a lot of the mental conflict people have with astrology today. It’s frustrating to hear people say this group of people are Pisces and this group of people are Aries. How can humans be divided into 12 groups? I’m here to say we can’t, but the real practice of astrology has a lot more to it than which sign our sun is in the day we were born. At it’s deepest level astrology is an involved study of the archetypes that make up our lives and the world around us. While I won’t jump straight into the the complexities of astrology, one important thing to know is there were many more planets in the sky on the day you were born than just the sun.
In our astrology and shadow work series we will investigate how these archetypes play out in our lives, assisting us, limiting us, and impacting our view of the world around us. This week we are becoming familiar with how to find our birth chart and look up which zodiac signs all our planets are in. In the coming weeks we will break down each planet and how it behaves in each of the zodiac signs, then we will look at shadow practices that relate to these forces in our lives.

A note on Anger-
Anger in our lives often has two purposes. 1- To make us feel more powerful and 2- To avoid dealing with other emotions. Unlike sadness and despair, anger can feel strong and make us feel like we have more control of the situation. It helps us to avoid vulnerability. In the big picture anger isn’t as much of the issue as the way we use and process it. Anger as active aggression is not a healthy use of this energy, but at the same time we need to consider how to move this energy in a way that honours it and respects the message it is trying to bring us.
In this week’s journal question we ask-
What makes us angry?
Why does this make us angry?
What happened the last time we were angry about this?
Is there an underlying belief or fear around this anger?
This week in shadow practice we draw from a practice in Dr. Aziz Gazipura's book Not Nice to investigate one method of releasing anger in a healthy way. For our grounding practice we creating a touchstone we can use whenever we need to return to ourselves.

A Note on Negative Thinking-
I did want to share some quick thoughts on the risks associated with negative thinking. It’s very prevalent in our society to press the message that we “maintain” happiness by thinking positive thoughts and smiling through difficult situations. This errant messaging sets a person up to believe that if they are not happy it is their own fault for not being positive enough or not trying hard enough. Imagine the added stress this creates in a person’s life to already be unhappy but also hear the message that it’s all your fault.
I agree that negative thoughts that are piled on top of each other with no methods to stop the negative thinking spiral can be damaging, but the real problem isn’t the negative thoughts (which all humans have), but the lack of taught methods and resources teaching us how to process our negative thoughts in a healthy and proficient manner.
Today’s shadow practice focuses on a method of processing the negative emotional charge behind our negative thoughts so that the thoughts lose their power. That is not to imply this method of negative thought management works for everyone and works every time. But we will continue on these weekly practices and investigate different methods to help you find the ones that work.
It’s a slow process to excavate ourselves from our negative thinking that is societally promoted and a life-time habit. It’s the little things we do in our lives to make ourselves happier that add up, even if it takes time to notice the difference.
As with all practices listen to yourself. Stop when you need to. Take time and be gentle because you’re the only person who knows what you need in this moment.
This week for our journaling questions we ask ourselves-
What negative thoughts about myself do I believe to be true?
When did this negative thinking arise?
Is there a theme in these negative thoughts?
Is there an underlying fear to these thoughts?
For shadow practice we investigate taking this negative thinking and using it to process buried emotions. And in the end we ground ourselves with focused listening.

A word on Discomfort-
As an evolved species there is little else our lives have been geared towards for the last 100 years except avoiding discomfort. We surround ourselves in plushness and ease, with quick single-button solutions, and one-call answers within easy grasp. We have reached a point as a species where the thought of being uncomfortable is almost abhorrent. But an interesting bit of knowledge is that when they studied the greater leaps in evolution in plant life they found they often occurred during the greatest periods of distress (droughts, wildfires, etc). We may not be plants, but humans are effected in a similar way. We need discomfort to grow and change and without these experiences often stagnate and become stunted.
This week in shadow practice we look at things that make us uncomfortable and why. For our journalling questions we ask-
What makes me uncomfortable?
Why do I feel uncomfortable in this situation?
What happens when I move towards this situation?
Does this discomfort play into multiple situations?
Is there an underlying fear in this discomfort?
For our shadow practice we take a kinaesthetic (physical) approach this week and try tree pose (links below for more info) to see how we can become comfortable with being uncomfortable in a safe space.
And for our grounding practice we end the class with conscious eating, using all 5 senses to experience our food for a grounding experience.

A word on our Demons-
Something many people don’t realize is that everyone has inner demons- the part of ourselves we feel ashamed of or that we don’t want anyone else to see. And because we are so ashamed or embarrassed of these aspects of ourselves they often get reviled and treated as enemies, which only allows them to take on a more gruesome shape. In shadow practice we create a separate awareness of our own demons so they can be cared for and loved as an important part of ourselves.
This week for our journal question we ask ourselves-
What part of ourselves do we hide?
Why do we hide this part of ourselves?
Is there an underlying emotion with this hidden part?
Is there a family member or other person associated with this hidden part of ourselves?
For our shadow practice we use the ancient art of Chöd (links and additional info below), the act of visualizing and feeding our demons so they are cared for. In shadow work the darkest parts of ourselves are often hungry for our kindness and attention, and this is one method we can use to meet our hidden needs.
For our final grounding practice we look at 10 count breath as a way of teaching our mind to meditate through concentration, without adding to our thoughts.

A note on Fear-
Fear is the underlying emotions that plays into the majority of our thoughts, feelings, and actions, even though we are often not aware of it. When we bring awareness and an evaluating practice to our actions we can begin to see our motivating fears that may drive our decisions, and through shadow practice we can begin to process this emotion in a way that they stop being the driving force in our actions, allowing us to move in whatever direction inspires us instead of being reactive to life.
This week we ask ourselves for our journal querstions-
What are we afraid of?
Why do we carry that fear?
Where did this fear originate?
Did someone or something give me this fear?
Figuring out what we are afraid of on a deeper level is both fundamental to shadow work and very hard to do. This posting from Finding the Light provides a good summery of inner child wounding that can lead us to better understand where our fears really come from.
For our shadow practice we investigate feeling our emotions in our bodies instead of thinking about them, which prevents our minds from growing the emotion to a disproportionate size.
And finally we release ourselves from this line of thinking with a little four element breath where we take the time to notice how elements of earth, air, water, and fire feel inside us to help ground us back into our bodies.
