In the season 4 premiere, I discuss how to grapple with the fact that your life may have turned out differently than you expected after your perinatal trauma.

Maybe you have a child with special needs.

Maybe you have a disability yourself.

Maybe you experienced or still experience PPMDs.

Maybe your family is grieving during your perinatal period.

Maybe you ever expected to be a mom.

How do you grapple with the fact that your body may fail you?

How do you grapple with the fact that you may feel God possibly made a mistake?

Tune in to hear more!

For the season finale, I share some real and raw thoughts about self-worth after perinatal trauma. I imagine I am not the only person to struggle with self-worth after perinatal trauma; really any trauma. Trauma, whether physical or mental, has a huge impact on the often blindsided recipient. In today's episode, I welcome Petra Cruz to the podcast. Petra is a wife, mom of 4, birth doula, birth educator, and advocate for VBAC. She is passionate about sharing the raw and real side of motherhood that nobody likes to talk about so they know they are not alone. While in labor with her first child, Petra was told that her baby could die due to decels (a drop in the baby's heart rate). This led to being coerced into a cesarean. Unfortunately, the coercion did not end there. Petra was coerced into 2 more cesareans. Fortunately, through lots of healing and prayer, Petra went on to have a transformative VBAC with her youngest. Today we are joined by Amber Tice for part 1 of her story. After experiencing Hyperemesis gravidarum with all three of her pregnancies, Amber experienced more perinatal trauma when her youngest was just 2 weeks old. After waking up one morning at 4 am to nurse him, she hemorrhaged and ultimately went into DIC, a rare blood clotting disorder that can cause organ damage and uncontrollable bleeding. She would need to be transferred to multiple hospitals to receive the care she needed to save her life. Today’s episode is extra special. Almost 5 years ago I became pregnant and knew I wanted to have a doula with my second daughter. Enter Brittany Baker. At the time Brittany was a student doula trying to become certified. This meant she needed to have 3 births under her belt in order to be certified. She agreed to take me on as a client as long as she could perform her checklist while I was in labor & postpartum. Little did either of us know what that decision meant at the time. For Brittany, it meant walking into another birth and walking out traumatized. For me, it meant she would be there for our family on what would be the hardest day of our lives. She even accompanied my daughter to the NICU and would take the first video of her cries after being extubated. Tune into this heartwarming episode to hear more!

At this point, you're probably asking yourself "Perfusionist? A whata what?" I remember when I first met Gina she told me what she did for a living, I was so confused. Next, I asked her what that was and she explained. She also noticed my sternotomy scar as that is something she sees in her everyday work. Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation is a machine cardiothoracic surgeons use when performing surgery. My non-medical explanation is it acts as the heart, lungs, or both either when a person needs heart surgery or (like me) needs time for their heart and lungs to rest. Today Katie and I are honoring AFE Awareness Day with heavy hearts. Katie lost her childhood best friend to AFE. Just over 1 month prior to mine. Through the last 3+ years I have heard Ali’s name on a number of occasions and always felt a connection to her beautiful smile. I can’t help but wonder if Ali survived, would she launch a fundraiser in honor of AFE Awareness Day. Organize a blood drive. Or share her and her daughter’s story on their anniversary. Thankfully her family and friend’s, like Katie, have done all of the aforementioned in her honor. To keep her memory alive.

Laura Fletcher is just an outstanding, astonishing woman. I feel like everyone needs to know her! After a premature rupture of membranes, her first daughter was born at 35 weeks. She would go on to endure 10 years of secondary infertility, 4 miscarriages, and an obscene amount of medical gaslighting. After those miscarriages, she found a Reproductive Immunologist in New York. This doctor was an angel on Earth. Not only did he actually listen to his patient, he uncovered Laura’s autoimmune disorders, treated her silent endometriosis, and with the help of several other doctors Laura was able to stay pregnant and give birth in 2020.

S1. E. 13 Dr. Umberto Napoletano, D.O. Pain Management Orthopedic Manipulation Therapy Today we are joined by my doctor, Dr. Napolitano to discuss pain treatment options. About a year and a half after my AFE I was still having significant pain from the surgeries. I vividly remember going to see my PCP to discuss options. She said steroids or pain meds. I pushed back and explained I wanted another option. Pain medicine caused me to gain a lot of weight and there had to be another option. I started doing some research and found a family medicine practice with DOs. I booked an appointment and it changed my life. My daily pain went from 7 down to a 2; sometimes even a 1! Tune in to find out how!

Rachel Hough

Formula vs. Nursing vs. Donation

I remember throughout Rachel’s pregnancy discussing whether she would nurse her baby or give her a bottle with formula. In her feisty, “true-to-Rachel” sense she said, “I don’t see why I would pay for formula when I can nurse for free”. I understood what she meant. After the arrival of her beautiful, precious daughter, she struggled to cope with the sleep deprivation. Ultimately, this led to the decision to give her baby formula, to prioritize her mental health.
