A cognisance of the lethal impacts of synthetic dye and a need to recycle discarded garments led to the birth of a social venture: Dye- Cycle. This project has a simple, two-pronged aim – first, to increase awareness about the pollution caused through dyeing in the textile industry from a scientific lens, and second, to recycle discarded/scrap garments by using natural catechu dye in a dyeing process conducive to the environment.

Hello everyone and welcome to the second episode of the Science of Dye-ing. My name is Veraj and I cannot wait to discuss another dimension of fabric dyeing: innovative methods that are good for the environment. In the last episode we learnt how wastewater from dye treatment contains high concentrations of chemicals, including chromium, arsenic, copper, and zinc. These chemicals when released into waterways also block sunlight and deplete oxygen for aquatic life.
