Come alongside us as we discuss all the good, the bad, and the very weird of the movie that will reboot the entire DCU. Byers makes Troy a little sad with one of his criticisms of the film as it was one of his favorite scenes. We discuss how audiences don't need origin stories for well established characters anymore and it's great that directors are in agreement.

We get to discuss one of the writers, Simon Kinberg, right off the jump as he’s been involved in our favorite and least favorite movies and TV shows of the past 20 years. We talk a lot about Peter breaking Magneto out of the Pentagon as it hits on a lot of our categories. We end with a lengthy discussion, for once, on "whose movie is it?"

It's time for our annual NFL season preview! We had to record this really early this year, Troy had jaw surgery, so if we don’t mention a lot of preseason story lines that were big after the first week of August that is the reason why. (JJ McCarthy's injury, Hollywood Brown's injury, and others hadn't occurred.) We go through our record predictions, place them in our tiers, and predict some end of season awards. As expected, the AFC South and NFC South conversations were really brutal.

Our newest Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects is a draft of Old Time Baseball Nicknames. This is a topic that may seem superfluous but it is very near and dear to our hearts. Way too much research was done in the name of making each other laugh while also having something interesting to say about the player and how they got their nickname. Since we went far back in time for some of these we derail a lot on our favorite random team names that we never knew existed. Some of the players that we mentioned are pioneers of the sport and not just there for funny names.

Goofs: Troy was wrong on the date of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It was published in 1897, a good 20 years after Count Sensenderfer played. According to Wikipedia, he got the nickname Count from his moustache and aristocratic air.

We are diving back into the MCU this week, for the 10 year anniversary of one of our favorite Marvel movies. You'll notice our love for this movie quickly, because this episode has possibly the longest opening we've ever done for a Late Nights at Blockbuster. We still have quibbles even with one of our favorites - although we bring up almost as many quibbles from other movies during this one as we do about the movie we're actually supposed to be talking about. This week’s episode is a Late Nights at Blockbuster celebrating the 25th anniversary of She’s All That. Every random HS movie from the 90s needs a pop star in their first acting role (Usher and Lil Kim!), an oddly jammed in song to sell the soundtrack (Rockafeller Skank by Fatboy Slim), and slang that no one actually used at the time (major wiggage). We also fawn over another random actor from the 90s that didn’t make it in this one. Our actual favorite line from this movie was a little too risqué for our podcast so we didn’t include it, but you can definitely guess it. Byers breaks Troy’s heart by admitting something that he’s held on to for a very long time related to this movie and it’s signature scene. It felt very personal and we’re not here to litigate whether it was completely warranted…

If I gave you a dollar you could keep most of the change because all I really want is a…Quarterback. We are celebrating the Super Bowl with a deep dive on the best QB for all 32 NFL teams. We set up some specific ground rules for our exercise so it’s important to keep that in context. We had a lot of discussion regarding where to put the current generation of QBs whose careers are either just starting or have several years of quality play left. We apologize in advance to fans of the Bears, Browns, Buccaneers, and Jets as we weren’t intentionally trying to be mean we just provide the information that is set before us. Cowboys fans…we were intentionally trying to get under your skin. Byers did a better job sticking consistently to his criteria than Troy who was a child tossed back and forth by waves. At a certain point we did the stereotypical “guys throwing out names of random players” bit and had too much fun doing it.

We kick off 2024 with a movie draft and it felt too easy to go with the 25th Anniversary celebration of movies that came out in 1999. We were originally going to draft 10 movies each but we decided to embrace the weird movies that we wanted to talk about and went to 15. We got derailed several times, especially Troy when he decided to hang around too long on Blast From the Past. Troy immediately regrets picking Entrapment later in the draft and we spend too much time researching the age gap between Sean Connery (The Day is Mine!) and Catherine Zeta-Jones. We let you peek behind the curtain on how early we record some of these episodes that don’t really need updated information as Troy mentions Taylor Swift going to the Bears game from September. The last ten minutes wrap up all of the movies that missed the cut for one reason, or several.

This week’s Corner Booth at Rex’s episode is on The Marvels. While we were both positive about the movie, Byers was more positive than Troy. We had plenty to quibble about once we got into spoiler territory as a lot of the mechanics of the story didn’t make sense. We also discussed how this movie had the most crossovers of the Marvel TV shows than any other movie that’s been released to date. It’s time for our annual NFL preview. We provide our records for each team, place them in our tiers that we’ll be using for the rest of the year, and predict award and Super Bowl winners. We agreed on a lot of teams and their records but disagreed the most on the Rams. Troy promised that he wouldn’t go in depth on the Texans and then couldn’t help himself and did it anyway. We end with some Jonathan Taylor trade talk as that was the biggest story at the time of recording. Byers says, “Some day the Kelce wheels are going to fall off,” when referring to the Chiefs and projecting them to win the AFC West again. A week later he gets injured at practice…

This week’s episode is a Late Nights at Blockbuster celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Dazed and Confused. This movie was the springboard for a few mega stars of the 90s and early 2000s. We have some disclaimers about the movie before we go on to talk about it for more than 90 minutes. Byers does actual research on the drinking age in Texas during this time and we dive into how our generation was the last to feel like this movie still feels like a high school movie that takes place during their timeframe despite it being 20 years later. We added a new category and Byers reminded Troy of an old category that was perfect for this movie.

Our latest Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects is a draft of our favorite movie sequels. We couldn’t help ourselves and instead of going Top 5 we decided to go Top 10 and then in the middle of recording we recognized that we needed to go Top 15. Comic book movies are obviously ripe for this type of discussion and we didn’t disappoint.

Goofs: Troy forgot that Ant-Man and Wasp was also in between Infinity War and Endgame. The director of Mad Max: Fury Road is George Miller, not George Romero.

Our newest Deep Thoughts on Shallow Subjects is on our Top 5 Non-MCU movies. In addition to our Top 5 we wanted to do a bottom 5 since there are some big stinkers in this category. We end the conversation by talking about our biggest disappointments. We keep the Spider-Man 3 bashing to a minimum, and yes we were very pleased with ourselves for doing so.

Goofs: Troy couldn’t remember the names Darwin and Tempest from X-Men: First Class. Troy confused Blade 2 and Blade 3. Blade 3 is the one with Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel.

Our newest Corner Booth at Rex’s is on The Mandalorian Season 3. We go through our normal categories and stay spoiler free for the first 15 minutes. After that we discuss some of our likes and dislikes of the season as this was one that many people were down on. Byers never tells Troy that he ran out of negative things to stay and just starts talking about the positives making Troy look like he was more down on the season than he really was.

Goofs: When we talk about Rise of the Guardians you can forgive Byers remembering it as the owl movie because that one was named Legend of the Guardians. Troy said Wizard Wand but he meant the Elder Wand from Harry Potter.

There is plenty of discussion about newcomer Adam Warlock, the always awesome soundtrack, Buff Groot, and our thoughts on the end of the trilogy.

Our latest Late Nights at Blockbuster celebrates 40 years of Return of the Jedi. We get into George Lucas’ union busting ways, lots of toy and lego talk, and we’re pretty sure that this is the most you’ll ever hear someone talk about Moff Jerjerrod. Calvin accurately describes this as a feel-good movie as it is the most positive of any of the Star Wars movies. Troy also decided to give a pop quiz to Byers and Calvin on their knowledge of Star Wars names.

We don’t have much negative to say about least favorite scene or editing but we have plenty of fun with plot holes and quibbles. Troy meanders a bit and somehow brings Mozart into the conversation.

Our newest Late Nights at Blockbuster celebrates the 20th anniversary of X2: X-men United. This will be our easiest favorite scene ever, but we needed to go through those that were going to be relegated to second place. We were pretty chalk on most of the categories but still had some differences in the things that bug us about this movie. Byers dives into his bag of tricks to extract a Star Trek reference that isn’t the very obvious one you are thinking of.

Goofs: Troy couldn’t think of Angel Reese from LSU. Troy fact checked that the assassinated president pictures were prominently featured in the beginning of the Nightcrawler scene.

Our newest Late Nights at Blockbuster is a time capsule of our high school days. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Can’t Hardly Wait. We tried our best to not recite the whole movie for our Drax award and Troy can’t stop saying people’s names like they do in the movie. Byers continues his assault on things that Troy likes, but once again he has very reasoned arguments. After we recorded this we saw that Charlie Korsmo graduated from MIT and went to Yale for law school and is now an attorney and law school professor at Case Western Reserve University.

Goofs: Troy completely flubbed the Job line from Arrested Development. It should have been, “I’ve made a huge mistake.”

We all have them, some movie that the rational side of you has to admit, probably isn’t very good. Most of your friends say so. The internet probably says so. Your spouse definitely says so. But you just can’t help it – you love this movie. Do you like montages? Then do we have a movie for you! Our newest Late Nights at Blockbuster is focused on the 35th anniversary of Bloodsport. The JCVD vehicle that started a string of movies that have essentially the same plot. Troy really stretches the phrase, “It’s like a Nolan movie.” For those of you that do not like our Drax award, you are rewarded with our quickest round ever in that category.

Goofs: Troy continuously refers to Frank as Jean Claude Van Damme throughout. Kowloon Walled City had a population density of approximately 1,255,000 inhabitants per square kilometre (3,250,000/sq mi) in 1987, making it the most densely populated spot in the world.

Calvin returns to the show to discuss Andor. We’ve been looking forward to this one for a while as all of us enjoyed the show and the new experience that it brought to Star Wars television. We talk at length how it felt like an Expanded Universe (EU) novel alongside the different ways that people can and did watch the show and their reactions to it. We definitely geek out about the proper Star Wars language that should have been used in different places. We also spend the last little bit discussing what plot threads were left hanging that might be addressed in Season 2.

This was high on both of our Christopher Nolan movie rankings that we did last summer. The movie is described by Byers as, “The first time watching it is 98% emotional gut punch while the other 2% is trying to figure out what is going on.” We discuss the Nolan effect and our experiences watching it for the first time. Our discourse always wound up returning to Coop watching the messages from his kids scene, with good reason. If you loved TARS, there is plenty here for you to enjoy.

We are celebrating the 10th Anniversary of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Hoot twice like a barn owl if you get into trouble! We discuss the extended edition of the movie similar to our Lord of the Rings discussion. However, Byers asks if we can get a better edit of the movie rather than extended editions. We might be the only podcast to compare this movie to the Fast and the Furious franchise.

Goofs: Leonard Nimoy sang the song titled “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” but he wasn’t involved in the animated version of The Hobbit from 1977. The Company stays in Rivendell for a fortnight to be sure they are there for the moon runes.

Goofs: The Jars of Clay album that Troy was thinking of was I Left the Zoo. Troy also doesn’t seem to know what Stockholm Syndrome means. A total of nine actors have played Batman while five actors have played Jack Ryan.

We go Kevin Costner in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves where the Boston accent goes in and out. Troy tries to hang on a little longer than Byers. We also discuss if this is Robin Williams best performance.

Goofs: Byers makes us even older than we are by saying we were Will and Chuckie’s age when we first saw this movie but we were closer to 17 than 20 and 22. For the record. Troy was wrong Jimmy Flynn had two other acting credits in The Cider House Rules and What’s the Worst That Could Happen? The man from India that Sean and Lambeau discuss is Srinivasa Ramanujan.

Join us as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Mighty Ducks. We talk briefly about our roller hockey days and Troy tells a story in honor of the purse scene. Byers did the hypothetical math that you all wondered about regarding Gordon’s 198 goal season. We almost devolved into an impromptu D2 podcast but recognized what was happening and stopped before we got too far.

Goofs: Troy was a little hyped up during recognize my face and didn’t hear Byers say avox 30 seconds before he asked to be reminded of the term avox. He then follows it up later when Byers tells him that Julie “The Cat” Stevens’ name is Cat and then we look it up and Troy doesn’t acknowledge that Byers was right…again.

So we dive into our favorite movies from the illustrious career of the one, the only Morgan Freeman.

Goofs: We mentioned his catalogue was quite extensive, but we failed to mention just how extensive – since the two of us were born – 1981, there have only been 3 years without a Morgan Freeman movie, and several years with one more than one.

In honor of last week's episode featuring E.T., we dive into our favorite alien movies. Byers gives us an introduction to “Voss Vibes” with one of his Top 5 movies. We do a mini-dive on M. Night Shyamalan (again?). Byers changed the rules, again, to make a longer honorable mentions list and it leads us down a rabbit hole of basically sharing all of our favorite alien movies that we considered for the list. You could tell that there were a lot of considerations for this one and we really enjoyed doing the research.

Our newest Late Nights at Blockbuster sees us go into confession about how E.T. and other movies freaked us out as kids. Our attack on road blocks continues and we bring up the biggest plot hole that would make E.T. a 3-minute movie. Troy tries to make the case that this is a breakout performance from Drew Barrymore and then Byers talks some sense into him after combing through one of the strangest IMDBs for a movie star ever.

Goofs: Troy said that Spielberg dictated this to Mathison during Close Encounters of the Third Kind but it was Raiders of the Lost Ark.

We thought about doing a Top 5 on Christopher Nolan movies, but seeing as how he has 10 major releases we figured it would be more worthwhile to rank them. It goes without saying that SPOILERS abound in this episode. If you haven’t watched all of these films, we would recommend you do so before listening. Except for Insomnia, we don’t spoil anything in that movie. Byers compares Interstellar to Up at one point.

Goofs: Troy incorrectly stated that Memento was the only R rated movie from Nolan because Insomnia was also rated R. Troy was wrong that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has taken a reprieve from acting in movies.

Concluding our run on Batman topics, we rank all of the theatrical release Batman movies one through 10, one of which may be lost to time for some. Since we went through deep dives on The Dark Knight trilogy in the last few episodes we tried not to repeat ourselves and quickly moved on to those that had not already been discussed. There are few agreements on the bottom and top of the rankings but our middle rankings are pretty different. We didn't include the Ben Affleck movies as those are more Justice League movies.

Dark Knight Rises

Our month (or more) of Batman continues as we wrap up Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and discuss the good, the bad and the confusing of this last chapter for Christian Bale as the Dark Knight.

We continue our Late Nights at Blockbuster treatment of The Dark Knight Trilogy. This week focuses on the second movie, The Dark Knight, which is among our favorite movies. Because we love it so much, we went on a little too long with favorite scenes and favorite quotes. There is discussion about how Nolan approaches violence in this movie and seemingly all his movies thereafter. Recognize my face touches on an actor that has by far the most actor credits on IMDB, and it’s not who you would think. Troy does a terrible job of explaining why he doesn’t like Maggie Gyllenhaal’s performance.

Goofs: Troy couldn’t think of the Fulton Recovery System when discussing the Lau scene.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has been pretty divisive amongst fans and critics and we were no exception. We were pretty agreeable on the rating and our experience with this movie. Despite saying it every time, we actually went through our non-spoiler thoughts in record time!

Friend of the podcast Calvin Baird joins us to discuss the 20th Anniversary of Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones. Calvin is a big Star Wars fan and grew up in the prequel generation. Since Byers and Troy fall in between the two generations, they thought it would be a great perspective to have represented in the discussion. We briefly discuss the dating scene on Tatooine and Jedi Tae Kwon Do. Calvin brings up a great question, why doesn’t Natalie Portman share in some of the ire from the hardcore Star Wars fans for her performances in the prequels?

Better Than Perfect

Welcome to our new series titled Better Than Perfect where we watch a series that the other person hasn't seen and the other person absolutely loves. We say early on in the episode that we thought it would be 90 minutes and it clocks in at 2 hours and 13 minutes. Are Ricky Bobby and Sarah Walker multiverse brother and sister? We took some time to discuss the elephant in the room, Chuck’s hair in Season 2. We also hit a couple of tangents around Season 2 that we needed to explore but make that recap much longer than the other seasons. Lots of discussion about Season 4 should have been the end of the series rather than the shortened Season 5.

Goofs: Troy said that Lauren Cohan’s The Walking Dead role was some time after Chuck. However, the first season had already aired but she became a regular on the show in the third season.

We hand out some awards for the season from 1:50-22:30 (Don't pay attention to the fact that we said that we wouldn't talk about these much.) We get into the playoff talk after that minute mark.

Goofs: Troy definitely overlooked Walker Buehler in the Cy Young race. Zack Greinke didn't have a losing record in 2009 when he won the Cy, but the team went 65-97. We can't pronounce Arozerana. Troy was a little too nice to the Marlins as they were just as bad as the Royals. Troy was too dismissive of Carlos Correa, who had a really good offensive year.

The Celtics selected Bird a year before he declared for the draft and they created the Bird collegiate rule afterwards to prevent teams from doing that in the future. The Chamberlain/Baylor/West Lakers went to three finals and won one in 71-72. Draymond was suspended for Game 5 and returned for 6 and 7 in the 2016 Finals.
