The Toronto Maple Leafs (9-3-1) are in first place overall in the National Hockey League while the Boston Bruins (4-7-0) sit in twenty-ninth. Saturday night, Boston will get another chance to right that wrong when they take to the ice against the Leafs at Toronto’s Air Canada Center, for the second meeting of the season between these two division rivals. Boston won the first game 6-2 at home on October 20, 2011. Chris Kelly scored the game winning goal while four of his teammates, Andrew Ference, Zdeno Chara, Milan Lucic and Tyler Seguin had three points each. Since that win in Boston, the Bruins have gone 1-3-0. However, the Black and Gold will enter the contest after a convincing 5-3 win over the Ottawa Senators. It was, arguably, the first game of the season where the Bruins played like the championship team fans grew accustomed to watching last season. Bruin Tyler Seguin continues to have a super sophomore season. He leads the club in points with 11. The 19-year-old is tied for the team lead in goals (4) with Milan Lucic and is at the head of the class in assists with seven. Seguin’s plus-8 also leads the Bruins and has him in fifth place in the NHL.
The Boston Bruins hope going on the road will bring them better luck than home ice has lately. After starting the season 2-5-0 at TD Garden, the B’s will be in Montreal for a Saturday night match against the Canadiens. The back end of a home and home series with the Habs (who took the first game in Boston Thursday evening by a 2-1 score), the Black and Gold will look to avoid losing their third consecutive match. The Bruins have played twice on the road this season going 1-1-0 with a loss in Carolina (3-2) and a shootout win over Chicago (3-2.) In Montreal, the B’s will seek to bring their early difficulties to an abrupt halt. There were some preseason expectations of a Stanley Cup hangover but the team has been unable to put together a full 60 minute effort with the possible exception of the win over Toronto. As a result, the club currently sits in last place in the Eastern Conference. After the most recent loss to Montreal, Bruins’ coach Claude Julien indicated the team needed to up its focus. The players agree with their coach but are optimistic they can turn the season around. Bruins’ center Patrice Bergeron told a media gathering after Thursday’s game, “…we obviously have to work through it and find a way. You know, it’s one thing to realize that and say that we’re right there but it’s not good enough. The Montreal Canadiens will be in Boston’s TD Garden Thursday night. It will be the first game between the two Original Six franchises since last Spring’s seven game Eastern Conference quarter finals: A series that was won in overtime of the epic seventh game when Boston’s Nathan Horton scored to send the Canadiens home for the summer and the Bruins to the Eastern Conference semifinals. The game also marks the first face to face meeting between B’s captain Zdeno Chara and Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty since the now infamous game from last season when Pacioretty was injured when checked into a stanchion (by Chara) at Montreal’s Bell Centre. It is all but certain the two will see plenty of each other throughout the Thursday’s game. Chara is usually charged with playing against opponents’ top lines and scorers and Pacioretty, with nine points in nine games, leads the Canadiens in scoring this season. Montreal coming to town also means the return of defenseman P. K. Subban. The highly skilled blue liner leads the Habs in time on ice but has only three assists to show for it. There is no question Subban will attract the attention of the Bruins with his brash style of play. Both teams are experiencing slow starts this season. Boston (3-5-0) sits in 13th place in the National Hockey League’s Eastern conference while Montreal (2-5-2) occupies last (15th) place in the East. The Bruins two areas of concern at this point in the season are goal scoring and, of course, the power play. The Bruins conclude their two-game “road trip” Saturday night at the United Center in Chicago. There, the defending-champion Boston Bruins will take on the defending champions from 2009-10, the Blackhawks in their only meeting this season. The Bruins are coming off consecutive losses to teams that missed the playoffs in 2011, Carolina and Colorado. The B’s offense has looked dismal on the whole this season, sporting a 1-3-0 record despite their goaltending letting in seven goals in four games (a 1.75 team GAA). Brad Marchand leads the Bruins in goals (two, tied with Rich Peverley) and points (four, tied with Tyler Seguin). So much for talks of a sophomore slump. In particular the struggles of a couple of Bruins first-liners, Milan Lucic have been the topic of conversation. The two have a combined two assists and no goals in the first four games to start the season. Both are notoriously streaky, but seemed to come alive in the third period versus Carolina on Wednesday. After the pre game ceremonies, there actually is going to be a game in Boston tonight. The city is electric with all the energy, and I am sure that there have been a few pre game coldies tipped back at the various watering holes around town. The crowd will be loud as the hated Flyers come to Boston and try to spoil the summer long celebration of the 2011-2012 Stanley Cup Champs. The title defense starts tonight! The Senators handed the Bruins the only loss of thier preseason when Mika Zibanejad scored a beauty in OT back on Sept 21st. Since then the Bruins have pared the roster and gotten on a roll winning 3 straight. Look for a Bruins team that will look very close to what we will see in the regular season for this one as the only spots up for grabs are the 7th D and 13th forward, and the battle is between a very few players in both cases. I can't recall the last time a preseason game had the storylines that this one does.. Max Pac is back, and this "could" be the first time he shares the ice the Zdeno Chara since the big hit that ended Max's season last year. After beating the Habs in 7 games in the first round of the playoffs last year, the Habs may have something to say about this one, even though it is just a 'tune up'.
