Tāwhirimātea started life as an improv live performance recorded at the opening of “Tāwhirimātea’s Battle” A group exhibition of Tairāwhiti artists to commemorate “one year on from Cyclone Gabriel”In this piece Carrier explores the impact of Human interaction with the environment and the catastrophic consequences that this can cause as realised in the Tairāwhiti region.The piece is made up of several elements. The wonky almost tortured oscillating synth drones represents the grief and anger of Tāwhirimātea as Rangi and Papa are separated by his sibling’s. The randomly generated bass tones represent the indiscriminate nature of a severe weather events or natural disasters. The monotonous repetition of the rimshot pays homage to the relentless nature of profit driven commercial enterprise at all costs and its influence on regulatory body control. The drum patterns portray the ongoing struggle between Tūmatauenga (God of war and people) and Tāwhirimātea over the separation of Rangi and Papa, and the hue represents the sense of community, hope and quiet determination to overcome.---Steven King (he/him) aka Carrier has been a long-time electronic music explorer of many genres. Pass-on-ings is a 4-part composition by DSLB, Chrissie Butler’s solo project. “Between the commissioning of this work in early 2023 and its creation, my mum passed away. Pass-on-ings is an echo of the last weeks, days, and hours shared with mum. It is a track and trace of time and space, of light and shadows, of moments etched in memory and now in sound. It is a last post, the last lullaby.”----DSLB is the solo project of Chrissie Butler. An offshoot from Chrissie’s band Ditzy Squall, DSLB (Ditzy Squall’s Lunch Box) is a showcase for a love of long endings and the hum things make when you hold them close to your ear. Performed live, DSLB is an improvised mash-up of ancient record players, purring keyboards, kitchen utensils and found objects. Soundtracks for short films and hand drawn comics are also residents in the lunch box. CUD refers to the chewing-over-again of partly digested food eaten by ruminants (animals like cattle, sheep & goats). To ruminate is to think, or dwell on a thought repeatedly – as a creature throws up its meal only to chew it over again. CUD is a sonic collage intent on reanimating (& ruminating on) a range of ferally scavenged archival media: advertisements for Aotearoa’s meat, milk & farming products; radio cooking shows; queer local cinema; the violent semantics of authoring sound effects; & the hauntological grief of a dance only heard, not seen. The work seeks to explore relations between reproductive/nonreproductive & human/animal bodies, their associated technologies & byproducts through repurposing archival media. CUD seizes on what Mel Y. Chen refers to as ‘leakages’ between classifications of what is human & what is not, with an emphasis on the idea of “naturalness” & its other, the “unnatural” – a term frequently deployed in reference to queer sex & reproduction. CUD asks you to lean into the leakages, to reiterate & invert them – irrupting the smooth semiotic surface of naturalness’ normative containers.The word ruminant is derived from the Latin rumen, meaning ‘throat’ – the site of both the voice, & the breath. The recorded singing voice featured at the end of CUD is that of the only Castrato singer ever recorded, Alessandro Moreschi, singing Tosti’s Ideale in 1902. The dancer you can hear panting & stomping is Douglas Wright, dancing Elegy, a piece made in 1993 for his friends who died of AIDS. Spliced together – with reverence – across almost a century, they offer a surrogate lament regurgitated from a gender-bent throat.CUD opens with an invitation to see, perhaps in line with Barthes’ dictum that to see well, you must close your eyes. I wonder then, if to hear well, one must close one’s ears, or perhaps lean into sounds of the errant, the monstrous, the distorted: the unideal. Ideale (Tosti, 1882; translated from the Italian) I followed you like a rainbow of peace along the paths of heaven; I followed you like a friendly torch in the veil of darkness, and I sensed you in the light, in the air, in the perfume of flowers, and the solitary room was full of you and of your radiance. Absorbed by you, I dreamed a long time of the sound of your voice, and earth's every anxiety, every torment I forgot in that dream. A head-phone listening experience focussed around an aeolian harp located on Rangitoto Island in the Hauraki Gulf (Tamaki Makaurau-Auckland), installed and recorded during a week of different winds and weathers through mid November 2022. The aeolian harp instrument is an ancient one, traced historically to early Greek accounts of gut strands drying in the wind, picking up harmonic vibrations amplified by the membrane of the skin the strands were attached to.This sound work is an offshoot of a more expansive climate monitoring project titled Kõea o Tāwhirimātea / Weather Choir, devised in response to an Aotearoa invitation earlier this year to participate in World Weather Network, a worldwide regional climate response project initiated by Art-Angel in the UK. 'Inside Voice' is grounded in the place where I live. The work is framed by recordings of environmental sound from around Te Awakairangi – my garden, the hills nearby, a busy urban street. Inside and behind, edited piano improvisations creep into view, shaded by a layer of live electronic alteration. The process of layering affects our reception of the materials – taking an aesthetic stance towards environmental sound, but also placing musical performance at a distance, so that the roles of foreground and background interchange, and are made ambiguous.
Phil Brownlee is a composer and audio practitioner, based in Wellington, New Zealand. His work spans notated composition, free improvisation, and electroacoustic media. He has an ongoing interest in the interface between the traditions of taonga puoro, and contemporary creative practices. This has led to a number of collaborative works, and a deeper interest in shared creative processes. 'Noise Drone Repeat' is Te Whanganui-A-Tara's premier regular night for all the things it says. A community building event that has nurtured and nourished musicians out of isolation and into conversation; a celebration of the power of the PA and the amplification of curious minds.

I trawl through disordered voice memo archives and set sticky traps through time and space with the help of a few friends. I catch an Easter choir in Athens, chickens in rural upstate New York, sad birds in New Zealand, touches of Ravel and Debussy, a friend’s child, an urban owl in Wales, some cats, one howling midnight dog, several underground trains... Underneath it all, I smear a thick, odorous layer of the hum of pissy Paris streets, recorded in horrible phone audio. I put the sounds into a jar and close the lid tightly so that they don’t escape. They are tangled up all over each other and inside of me. My own voice also sits in there, trapped in amber sap. Now I can drag them around with me forever, or for as long as I last.

"More than a decade ago, I made a piece of beat-based electronic music and titled it "Middle Eastern IDM" for a course assignment. After listening to it in class, my professor asked what was Middle Eastern about it. It was only a year after I had left Iran to study in the US, and I didn't know that I could say "I am. I made the piece". So I went back and superimposed a sample of Egyptian protest chants on top of the piece, to make it "sufficiently Middle Eastern".
What prejudiced conservatism and performative liberalism share are gatekeeping practices that box one in a preconceived state of otherness. While the former overtly regards that otherness as inferior, the latter exoticises it through patronising paternalism. To me, it is especially troubling when exclusionary practices are driven by some form of overzealous "diversity and inclusion" agenda. If you don't fit the diversity box they've made for you, too bad. It's your fault for being "insufficiently diverse". "Poor thing, you've been colonised!", they tell you, as they claim ownership over a collection of frequencies and rhythms. When you look at who gets to decide if something's indigenous enough, you see how decolonisation itself has been colonised.
When you listen to this piece, I'm very happy for you to keep in mind that it was made by someone from Iran. But I might need to clarify that this piece has nothing to do with sufism and the whirling dervishes, the interweaving patterns of the Persian carpet, the poetry of Rumi, or Islamic architecture. And if you hear those moments of "non-western" sonorities, that is because I have constructed this piece from samples of a piece of Iranian traditional music – an overplayed piece that was all over TV and radio while I was growing up Iran, one that I never found particularly inspiring or interesting. Here, I have tried to make it more interesting by completely taking it apart and reconstructing it through my personal compositional techniques, aesthetic preferences, and a wide range of musical influences. So in short, while this piece might not sound like your archetypical Iranian music, I assure you that it is Iranian enough."
Mo H. Zareei aka mHz is an Iranian sound artist and electronic musician based in Wellington, New Zealand. Using custom-built hardware and software, his artistic practice aims to highlight the beauty in the basics of sound and light production and reductionist audiovisual elements that draw inspiration from physical and architectural principles. He has exhibited his work at international venues such as ISEA (Montreal/Vancouver/Dubai), SETxCTM festival (Tehran), NIME (London), Modern Body Festival (The Hague), ICAD (New York), and NZ Festival (Wellington), to name a few. His installation “Rasping Music" was the recipient of the 1st prize for Sound Art at the last iteration of the international Sonic Arts Award in 2015 (Italy).
Under the moniker mHz, Zareei’s electronic music projects have been published via LINE (US), Important Records (US), leerraum (CH), and Kasuga Records (DE).

Twin signals at Silver Stream (fragments of a landscape for specimens #50766 & #50767) is a radiophonic artwork that stages a site-specific memorial for two extinct owls, a male and female pair of the species Sceloglaux albifaces, a bird known to Māori by many names including whēkau, ruru whenua and hakoke, and which the settler-colonials, who knew it for a far shorter time, called the laughing owl, white faced owl, or laughing jackass. Declared extinct in 1914, S. albifaces was known for its haunting and unnerving call, although its vocalisations were never directly recorded.
Now catalogued as items #50766 & #50767 in the ornithological collections of the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (Natural History Museum, Vienna), the two owls are approached as historical “recordings,” within the museum collections. They are then returned, as two seperate radio frequencies, to Silver Stream, near the city of Otepoti/Dunedin, the place where they were collected by Austrian-born taxidermist, collector and bio-prospector Andreas Reischek, in 1884. In Twin signals at Silver Stream (fragments of a landscape for specimens #50766 & #50767), these owl-frequencies intermingle with the sounds of the site, with live and transmitted accordion, in reference to a late nineteenth century report of owl-human listening and interspecies communication through music, and with the vocalisations of living endemic birds whose own long memories might hold some knowledge of the owl’s lost voice, a listening that also becomes an inaudible part of the work’s radio ecologies.

Bio: Sally Ann Mcintyre (1974, NZ/AU) is a Melbourne/Naarm based radio and sound artist, researcher and writer, who has been working artistically with small-scale radio transmission since 2006. Twin signals at Silver Stream (fragments of a landscape for specimens #50766 & #50767) extends a series of sound and radio art works she has been performing and exhibiting since 2012, which strategically utilise early recording and transmitting media such as wax cylinders, music boxes, and small-radius radio, to reveal the relationship of historical sound archives to cultural extinction narratives, and to consider extinction as a form of non-representational trauma, erasure, silence and silencing within the settler-colonial landscape.

This is an immersive radiophonic work featuring some of Reuben’s field recordings from Aotearoa and Sri Lanka. From tiny environmental and instrumental sounds, to multiple acoustic events occurring over expansive temporal/spatial soundscapes, these Hi-Fi sounds are for personal listening, so please increase the volume. All sounds and performances are recorded on location.
The journey begins with thunder, frogs,crickets and birds during a sweaty, late afternoon soundwalk into Sinharaja forest park. The sudden onset of rain provokes a hasty retreat. Near a village in the Knuckles Mountain range, a rice farmer leads his water buffalo in a spiral ‘dance’ around a paddy field under the morning sunshine. Isaac Smith speaks to our friend and guide Sid Elikewela about this traditional harrowing method.
A cicada recording from near Akaroa, Aotearoa, is slowed down to quarter speed, thereby transposing the pitch and rhythm into a different space for human perception, and folded into the un-altered soundscape in which the creature lives. A nearby hive of wild bees in a dead beech tree is encountered from within by using tiny microphones, while a saxophone rotates outside. Hydrophone recordings from multiple locations in the pond are combined into a wide angle texture, and combined with the changing ambience above water.

This Track is composed with the intention of exploring the sense of our forest being shared by other worldly entities. Inspired by Māori folklore, specifically maeroero and patupairahe, we used a mixture of taonga pūoro and modular synthesis to try and express the thin veil between forest life and give a sense of paranormal energies/ entities that may, or may not, have existed in the past or even still today.
Urn is Thomas Carroll (taonga pūoro) and Rob Awa (modular synthesis) urn is a merging of our common sonic approaches to music to try and encapsulate a unique blend of traditional maori music / with otherworldly synthesis drones/ ambient / textures and samples.

In ‘Epicenter to Outsiders’ Tash van Schaardenburg reflects on two contrasting experiences on both sides of the pandemic, one through excerpts from a performance created using field recordings made on a journey through Europe at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, and the other plays with recent field recordings that explores lockdown sonics.
Tash van Schaardenburg is a multidisciplinary artist, musician (Citacsy/Unisex Fuck Club) and promoter from Tāmaki Makaurau. Their art practice explores the acoustic anthologies and social negotiations of sound in the cityscape. Their experimental music project Citacsy-D extends this practice in live performances which create ambient biographical journeys through live sound-sculpting of field recordings. Tash is also a regular contributor to the There not Here field recording broadcast on AFM, a host of Sound Bleed on BFM, and Sound Dose - a monthly AFM broadcast for recent releases by experimental musicians and sonic art practitioners in Aotearoa. Tash completed a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts in 2018, and works for The Audio Foundation.

Misha writes "The recordings in this podcast were made in 2015 and 2016 during several visits to the mountainous region of the Sierra Juárez, Oaxaca, in southwest Mexico, in the towns of San Bartolomé Zoogocho, Santa María Tavehua and Villa Hidalgo Yalálag. Roughly structured in the order of the time of day in which each recording was made, they offer an idea of the extraordinary sound-world and music of these villages throughout the course of a day during the fiestas patronales (festivities in honour of the patron saint). Plus a few recordings from non-fiesta times, and ending with funeral music recorded during a wake in Villa Hidalgo Yalálag."
