Joy Fox, who is seeking the Democratic nomination in Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District, said she stands out from her opponents because of her roots.

“I grew up here, I live here now, I worked in government here, and I run a small business here,” Fox said in a recent taping of “Beyond the Podium.”

Fox cited the rising cost of prescription drugs, gasoline and groceries as the most important issue facing Rhode Island.

“If we want to solve these problems, we need to change who we send to Washington. I think that we need someone who has to work for a living, not someone who grew up with a trust fund,” Fox said.

The candidate explained why she’s most qualified to tackle those issues.

“My deep roots in this district give me a deep understanding of the challenges we face. I also have the experience of working for Congressman Jim Langevin and Gov. Gina Raimondo. This gives me a unique perspective to be able to hit the ground running on day one for you and your family,” Fox said.

Is there an issue that she's changed her thinking about?

“Given the recent actions of the Supreme Court, especially around Roe v. Wade, I think we do need to examine term limits for justices as well as the size of the court,” Fox said.

Fox named former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the wife of President Jimmy Carter, as a political hero.

“I have had the tremendous opportunity to get to know her and her work and she is a tremendous trailblazer when it comes to raising awareness about mental health issues, as well as for advocating for family caregivers,” Fox said.

Fox also shared the best advice she’s ever received.

“When faced when a challenging problem or something that we need to solve, it’s always good to have a diverse set of opinions around the table,” Fox said. “It’s why I think we need to send the first Democratic woman to Congress from Rhode Island.”

“The different perspectives we can put around the table, the better solutions we’ll find for everyone,” Fox said.

Gov. Dan McKee said in a recent interview for “Beyond the Podium” that being the incumbent governor is what differentiates him from his opponents in the Democratic primary.

“I’m uniquely qualified because I’m governor and have had now 15, 16 months. No state is run any better than the state of Rhode Island has since I’ve been governor. So, the experience there, passing a budget, having the largest surplus in the history of the state of Rhode Island, giving back that surplus to eliminate the car tax -- completely under my watch,” he said.

McKee said the most important issue facing Rhode Island is the cost of living.

“Our budget reflects creating jobs that are going to help with that, potentially upcoming recession,” the governor said. “The best remedy for a recession is jobs.”

“Rhode Island no longer has to be the first in and last out of these economic downturns,” McKee added. “I’ve shown that being governor.”

McKee said he’s ready to field any question that anyone wants to ask.

“I would say any question is open territory, in particular as a governor,” he said.

McKee drew parallels with President Obama when asked about a politician he admires.

“I entered the office as governor under the greatest state of emergency that the state has even seen. President Obama came in on a recession that was considered almost a depression. He was able to overcome that. He was able to put in legislation for the Affordable Care Act,” McKee said.

The governor said he received the best advice from his mentors and his dad.

“Do your best every day and knowing that doing your best is hard work,” McKee said.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California visited Rhode Island for the first time on Saturday to pledge the Republican Party's support for congressional candidate Allan Fung.

McCarthy wants Fung to succeed outgoing Rep. Jim Langevin so much so that he attended a private fundraiser for the former Cranston mayor in Jamestown.

“I think this is a once in a lifetime opportunity," McCarthy said in an exclusive interview with NBC 10's Gene Valicenti . "I'm not only just coming here today, but we're going to be here for the next 94 days to make sure he gets across the district."

Fung is unopposed in the Republican primary.

“It wouldn’t be about a Republican, it would be about America getting back on the right track,” McCarthy said. “It’s a change in this country that people want to have safety. They’re tired of the cost of living, the inflation that’s being driven by the Democrats. They don’t want to defund the police. They want a secure border. They want to stop fentanyl from coming across. We need somebody like Allan to make that happen.”

Langevin announced earlier this year that he would retire from Congress, setting off a scramble for the seat in the 2nd Congressional District.

"What McCarthy's visit means is the national Republican Party actually believes they have a chance of picking up a seat in Rhode Island," said Darrell West of the Brookings Institution.

West noted that Fung has a fine line to walk to win over voters in Rhode Island.

"The thing that Fung has to worry about is the political extremism of the national Republican Party," West said. "He does not want to get so closely tied to Kevin McCarthy and Donald Trump that that becomes a real negative for him in Rhode Island."

For McCarthy, Fung's candidacy is important enough to bring him to Rhode Island for the first time.

"Of all the places across the country I could come, this is one of the first places I made sure I can," McCarthy said. "When you meet Allan, you know he's special. You know this is a unique opportunity. You know what he has provided and what he's willing to give. You know the background, his experience."

Reaction came in from some of the six Democrats who are seeking the party's nomination.

“MAGA Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy supports privatizing Social Security, repealing the Affordable Care Act, and passing a national abortion ban," said Patricia Socarras, a campaign spokesperson for Seth Magaziner. "The fact McCarthy is campaigning for Allan Fung in RI confirms what we already knew— Fung and the extremist Republicans would be a disaster for Rhode Island seniors, Rhode Island workers and Rhode Island women."

Sarah Morgenthau chided McCarthy for spelling Fung’s first name wrong in a tweet that was later deleted.

“I’m running to make sure this seat stays blue. Kevin can’t even spell his own candidate’s name. He’s definitely not qualified to say what’s best for Rhode Islanders,” Morgenthau said.

She followed up: "Kevin McCarthy deleted his tweet. What he can’t erase are his far-right stances, which @AllanFungRI seems happy to embrace."

Joy Fox tweeted a picture of herself and her campaign team, reading, "While Allan Fung holds a secret fundraiser with Kevin McCarthy, we've been out walking in Elmhurst, listening to voters."

All of this, as West says the race in the 2nd District could be competitive.

"Some of the early polling shows a pretty close race there, so that's unusual," West said. "Typically, Rhode Island has been pretty reliable in recent years in electing Democrats, but this year Republicans think they have a shot at that seat."

If the Republicans sweep Congress in November, McCarthy is all but certain to become speaker of the House.

Valicenti's interview with McCarthy also touched on House Speaker Nancy's Pelosi's recent trip to Taiwan and the Justice Department's investigation of former President Trump.

Dr. Luis Daniel Muñoz, who’s seeking the Democratic nomination for governor of Rhode Island, says he has three priorities if elected.

“I’m running with plans to create sustainable health care system, a more equitable education system, housing that’s low income and affordable ... so that people can have roofs over their heads,” Muñoz said in a “Beyond the Podium” segment.

Muñoz said growing up in Central Falls gave him an understanding of what he called urban core struggles. He said he took that struggle and translated it into a career path by becoming a medical doctor and learning how the health care industry impacts the economy.

“Bringing that into the office of governor at a time when we’re still confronting this endemic is very important given that we have to build out infrastructure with community health, which I believe should be free,” Muñoz said.

“People should walk to free clinics like the ‘90s, but we dismantled that since,” Muñoz said. “I also think that when we focus on businesses -- not the big corporations -- we need to focus on the microbusinesses, right, what our local economies are built for, and ultimately, we can do that by putting ARPA dollars for these businesses.”

Muñoz said the political figures he admires -- Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy among them -- all share a common trait.

“People that were willing to sacrifice their lives for what they believed,” Muñoz said. “Those are the heroes that I always look up to.”

Muñoz said the best advice he ever received was “be still.”

“Sometimes we are so reactive to the issues that are happening around us that we fail to think carefully on how to create sustainable systems,” Muñoz said.

Gonzalo Cuervo, one of three Democrats running for mayor of Providence, says the biggest issue facing the city is economic inequality and an opportunity gap.

“We’re becoming two separate cities, and all the issues that we face are poor performing schools, housing affordability, public safety. The underlying issue is a real gap in wealth and in economic opportunity,” Cuervo said.

Cuervo answered a series of questions for a “Beyond the Podium” segment.

Cuervo said he’s qualified to take on those challenges because he was born in Providence, he’s been a community advocate since his teen years, and he has owned a small business on the South Side.

He also cited his work with nonprofits and the leadership positions he’s held in city and state government.

“I also have a lifetime -- 30 years -- of community engagement experience, of organizing experience. And I think that the combination of this diversity in experience, combined with experience as a small business owner, gives me a unique perspective and a track record of bringing people together to find solutions,” Cuervo said.

Cuervo said he’d like to be asked why he’s running.

“I am running because I love this city, because I have the experience and the life experience, the lived experience as a parent, as everything that I’ve described before to really bring about change,” Cuervo said. “I know that we can bring the right people together to impact the city and leave it much better than it currently is.”

Cuervo didn’t name a specific political hero, instead listing the traits of strong leaders.

“I admire people that are tenacious and that have values and that stick to those values and that understand that public service is absolutely about helping people,” Cuervo said.

As for the best advice he ever received: “To always be empathetic and try to understand where other people are coming from,” he said.

Helena Foulkes, a former business executive seeking the Democratic nomination in the race for governor of Rhode Island, says she stands out from her primary opponents because she's not a career politician.

Foulkes said she was born and raised in Rhode Island, and over 25 years worked her way up the ranks of Woonsocket-based CVS, where she says she tackled really hard problems.

"I think that I am a really good leader. I know how to attract great talent. You can ask anyone who worked with me over my career," Foulkes said.

She said she led 200,000 people and managed a $80 billion budget.

"I think the most important important thing a governor can do is attract the best possible talent around her and make sure that we're tackling the problems that Rhode Islanders really care about," Foulkes said.

The candidate identified education as the number one issue facing Rhode Island. She said children continue to struggle as the state emerges from the pandemic.

Foulkes said her view of the Affordable Care Act, commonly called Obamacare, has evolved over the years.

"I came to realize so many people needed the help of the federal government," she said.

She said her political hero is FDR.

"He led in a time that was just such a crisis for this country," Foulkes said. "I think he surprised many people. He made tough decisions. He showed the important role government can play in lifting people up."

Foulkes said the best advice she's ever received is: "You have to really give before you can receive."

"I think one of the reasons I've built good relationships -- both personally and professionally -- is that people know they can trust me," Foulkes said. "It's based on this foundation of listening really hard and understanding how I can help them as much as they can help me."

Seth Magaziner is seeking the Democratic nomination in Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District.

Magaziner says his experience as state general treasurer working in every city and town in the district gives him an edge over his opponents.

He identified the cost of living as the most important issue facing Rhode Islanders.

Magaziner said oil profits are coming at a time when it is unfair because consumers are getting gouged at the gas pump.

"As state treasurer for the past eight years, I have experience working with people across the political spectrum to get things done," Magaziner said.

Asked about an issue he's changed his mind about, Magaziner said he now believes term limits are a "healthy" thing.

"These positions, whether it's state treasurer, Congress, these do not belong to the individuals who hold those offices. These are positions that belong to the people," he said. "I do support term limits for members of Congress and for all positions."

Magaziner said he admires Franklin Roosevelt because FDR understood that in times of crisis leaders have to meet the moment and advance policies that support working people.

As for the best advice he's ever received, he said: "People in government who are most effective are the people who are the best listeners."

Republican candidate for governor Chris Doughty says affordability is the biggest issue facing Massachusetts.

Doughty answered a series of questions about his candidacy for a "Beyond the Podium" segment.

Speaking about the cost of living in Massachusetts, he said: "Our state has just become so expensive to live there for our senior citizens, our working families, and our young families."

Doughty said his background as the only candidate with executive experience in the business world gives him the skills to tackle economic issues.

"I've been doing it my whole life. I make auto parts in Massachusetts," Doughty said. "If I have one skill, it's to make things affordably in Massachusetts."

Doughty said he's also come to appreciate the importance of a job to one's fulfillment, not just as a way to earn money.

He said the Golden Rule is the most important advice he ever received and that honesty is the the most important characteristic for politicians and leaders.

Doughty was also a guest on 10 News Conference.
