The Kalevala is the epic national poem of Finland. Compiled by Elias Lönnrot from folk poetry from throughout Finland, Karelia, Estonia, and what is now northwest Russia, the Kalevala describes the worldview of the Finnish people from ancient times through to the modern day. It includes the adventures of Väinämöinen and Joukahainen, Ilmarinen and Lemminkäinen, from the distant lands of Pohjola, to Kalevala's wide heathlands.

In this episode we cover Rígsþula, or the Lay of Rig, from the Poetic Edda of Norse Mythology. We hear how Heimdall, going by Rig, visits 3 couples representing the classes of slaves, free men, and lords, and helps them to reproduce. Their divine children illustrate how the classes of men in the viking age would have lived, and we see how society would have developed from agricultural tribes to thriving kingdoms.

Our good friend Noah Tetzner from the History of Vikings podcast joins us for the second time on the anniversary of his podcast! We talk about some of his favorite experiences from his first year of podcasting, including visiting the Jorvik Viking Festival in York, UK. Noah has recently published a book, The Poetic Edda: A Study Guide. We'll provide a link below.
We had a problem with our end of the audio which we only discovered after the interview. We did our best to fix it up but it's still a little off. Fortunately Noah talks more than we do in this interview, and we hope you bear with us because it was a good chat regardless.

The Havamal is the collection of poetry attributed to Odin. It is included in the Poetic Edda and is a core element of Norse Mythology. The Havamal is a book of wisdom full of contraditions. At once it is an example of how to live and a cautionary tale mistakes to avoid. Included in the Havamal are the stories of the winning of the mead of poetry and Odin's sacrifice of himself to himself to discover the runes.
