In this episode of the Just DeW It podcast, Anne Duffy is joined by Dr. Laura Brenner. Dr. Brenner owns Lolabees, a career coaching business that seeks to help dental professionals figure out if dentistry is right for them.
After 10 years working as a dentist, Dr. Laura Brenner knew she had to change careers. She didn’t know the word for it at the time, but what she was experiencing is called “burnout.” When her blog post, “10 Reasons Your Dentist Probably Hates You Too” went viral in 2011, she knew she wasn’t alone.
Anne and Dr. Brenner discuss that experience, and the fact that it is okay to realize that dentistry is not the right career path for you. They talk about the importance of prioritizing personal development, and finding things to do that light you up. Additionally, Dr. Brenner explains the origin of her company name, “Lolabees.”

Dr. Younger explains how entrepreneurial women in particular inspired him to start TempStars. He describes teaching himself everything he needed to know to develop an app and using that knowledge to properly communicate what he wanted to accomplish with more experienced app developers.

Debora is the CEO of Twice as Nice Uniforms, a uniform company for dental professionals, designed by a dental professional. Debora talks about how she came up with the concept for Twice as Nice Uniforms, when she decided that she needed a temperature-controlled uniform after realizing how much time she’d spent one day fighting for her preferred temperature on the thermostat. She discusses the importance of having a dentistry-focused uniform company because a majority of scrubs and lab coats are designed for medical practitioners.
Debora explains her goal of creating high-quality uniforms that are affordable and fit nicely on all body types. Debora explains how she is collaborating with other speakers to provide information and entertainment by having fashion shows during presentations, in which she discusses educational topics such as in-office PPE regulations. Debora and Anne recall the fashion show that Debora put on for the 2021 DeW Retreat, and discuss the upcoming fashion show at the 2022 DeW Retreat.

Anne Duffy is joined by Amber Lovatos, BSDH, RDH, the Latina RDH. Amber Lovatos is a public health Dental Hygienist, the director of a dental non-profit clinic in Tomball, TX. She is also on the advisory board for RDH Magazine, and co-authored “Smiles Por Vida,” an educational children’s book about oral care that is available in both English and Spanish.
In this incredibly vulnerable episode, Amber Lovatos details her advocacy for representation of Latinas in the dental industry. She talks about how she came to embrace her Latinidad, and the pride she feels in representing her community. Amber explains that, by making an effort to educate themselves, all dental hygienists can create a more open and comfortable environment for Latinx people both in the office and in the industry.

Dental professionals are notoriously perfectionists and has a huge impact on the chronic burnout in the dental industry. Dr. Augustyn shows us that by being yourself and living authentically, you can beat burnout and spread joy and kindness in the world. She was also voted "America's Best Dentist" and "America's Top Dentists" based on superior training, experience, continuing education and commitment to excellence. She completed her formal dental education earning a doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Prior to that, she was awarded two Bachelor’s degrees (UIC and Benedictine University).
