In Luke 23, Jesus is passed between the Sanhedrin, Pilate, Herod, and Pilate again. Pilate finds Him innocent, but the crowd demands His crucifixion and Barabbas is released instead. Jesus is led away to be crucified with a mourning group following Him. The chapter ends with Him being placed in a tomb.

In Luke 22, as Passover approaches, Judas agrees to betray Jesus. During Passover, Jesus has His final meal with His disciples. Afterward, Jesus goes to pray on the Mount of Olives. Sadly, Judas betrays Jesus, and He is arrested. Later, Peter is confronted and denies knowing Jesus three times. The chapter ends with Jesus being mocked and brought before Pilate and Herod.

This sermon was preached on 07/9/23 at First Christian Church in Wilmington, Illinois.
Psalm 9 portrays David's understanding of the chaos caused by sin in this world. David realizes the extent of sin's destructive nature, which can consume one's entire life. However, he also acknowledges his guilt and the consequences of his actions. Despite this, there is hope for redemption through confessing sins and seeking salvation from God, who has the power to save. Through God's mercy, delivered through Jesus Christ, sin no longer has the power to destroy. Thus, we are called to praise God for His perfect justice, mercy, and guidance in our lives. Therefore, let us praise God, who is the ultimate judge.

Luke 20: As Jesus continues His ministry in Jerusalem we several of the religious leaders try to trap Jesus by what He says so that way they can get rid of Him. A group of leaders come up to Jesus while He is teaching in the temple to question His authority. Jesus then teaches through a parable. The religious leaders then send spies to try and trick Jesus asking about taxes. A group of Sadducees ask Jesus about who who will be married in the resurrection. This chapter ends with Jesus talking about the Messiah and a warning of those religious leaders.

Luke 19: Jesus travels to Jericho, and while there he meets Zacchaeus. Jesus eats with him, and afterwards Zacchaeus repents and gives back. On the ay to Jerusalem, Jesus teaches on faithfulness through a parable. Jesus then enters Jerusalem with shouts of praise and then weeps over Jerusalem. The chapter ends with Jesus driving people out of the temple.

Luke 18: Jesus teaches His disciples about persistence in faith through the parable of the persistent widow. Jesus teaches the self righteous through the parable of the pharisee and the text collector. Jesus teaches His disciples about the kingdom of God through little children. Jesus warns a ruler about the dangers of material wealth. Jesus predicts His death to the disciples and then heals and blind beggar.

Luke 17: This chapter begins with Jesus having a discussion with His disciples about sin and forgiveness. The apostles then asks about increasing their faith which Jesus begins to talk to them about serving. The chapter then transitions into Jesus healing ten men with leprosy with only one returning to thank Him. The chapter ends with Jesus answering the Pharisees' question about the kingdom of God.

Luke 16: Luke begins this chapter telling his readers about Jesus teaching His disciples the parable of the shrewd manager. As Jesus ends the parable with by saying that you cannot serve both God and money, the pharisees sneer at Him. Jesus then uses this opportunity to address the pharisees. After calling them out He spends a moment teaching on the law and marriage before teaching about the rich man and Lazarus.

Luke 15: Jesus was teaching to sinners when the Pharisees began putting against Him. Jesus takes this time to teach through three parables. Jesus uses the parable of the lost sheep to show the dedication of saving the lost. The parable of the lost coin shows the excitement over finding the lost. The parable of the prodigal son juxtaposes the excited of the father with the anger of the older son.

Luke 14: Jesus eats in the house of a pharisee and teaches about healing on the sabbath. While there he also teaches about being humble and serving others without being repaid. Jesus then teaches about the parable of the great banquet. This chapter ends with Jesus' challenge to the crowds about the cost of being a disciple.

As we continue through the Psalms, Psalm 103 is a declaration of praise to the Lord. The tragedy of human life is giving life to human pleasures and dedicating it to the applause and treasures of this world promising to deliver happiness but it can’t. The sadness is in the moment when we realize that we’ve been chasing the wrong thing in life. That it hasn’t given it’s only taken and will only leave us more disappointed, broken, and empty of the eternal desire God placed in your heart. Jesus, is inviting you to the kingdom. A kingdom life and a kingdom destination. The King of all Kings, loves you, died for you, has purpose for you, and promises for you. Praise the Lord, all my soul, for He alone is worthy.

Luke 12: Jesus warns the crowd about the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and the dangers of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. He continues His teachings using a parable about a rich fool and about storing treasures in Heaven not this earth. We see in Jesus teachings a push to focus on the eternal promise of tomorrow rather than the fleeting moments of today.

He also shares with His disciples that He will die for them. We see the transfiguration take place in this chapter, and this chapter ends with Jesus telling His disciples about the cost of following Him.

Luke 8
Jesus teaches and explains His parable, and proclaims that all who hear God's word and put it into practice are his family. He continues to show His authority by calming a storm, casting out demons, healing a sick woman, and raising a dead girl.

Luke 7
This chapter begins with Jesus healing a centurion's servant and raising a widow's son from the dead. John's disciples ask Jesus who He is, and Jesus uses this opportunity to teach the crowd. The chapter ends with Jesus forgiving a sinful woman who anointed and cleaned His feet.

Luke 6
Jesus' ministry is in full swing! He continues preaching and teaching, even while some of the Pharisees were looking for a reason to accuse Him. Jesus names the twelve apostles and brings His disciples into the wilderness to teach.

Luke 5
Jesus expresses his power over nature, healing, and sin. We see Jesus teaching people and some following Him as disciples. Jesus heals the sick, explaining He has power even over sin. He teaches that he came to heal both the physically and spiritually sick.

David is recorded as a man after God's own heart. Yet he still sinned against God. David chose his desire over God all while being king over Israel. God convicts David of his sin, and David asks for God's forgiveness. Psalm 51 gives us a glimpse of David's repentance.

Luke 4
We see Jesus go into the wilderness too fast. After 40 days Jesus is visited by Satan and is tempted three times before Satan leaves. Jesus Then begins healing, casting out demons, and preaching. Some praise Him while others grow angry enough to kill Him, yet Jesus continues His ministry.

Luke 3
As we start chapter three we see John preaching and baptizing in the wilderness. John hold his audience accountable and even calls out Herod which leads to his imprisonment. Jesus is baptized and Luke finishes the chapter highlighting Jesus' genealogy.

Luke 2
In Luke chapter 2 we see the birth of Jesus! Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem where Jesus is born. Afterwards shepherds share the good news, prophets praise God for the Messiah has come, and Jesus teaches at the temple when only a child.

Romans 5:1-8
Paul writes some encouraging words for Christ's followers. Through faith we know Christ and in our suffering we have hope in Him. Ultimately that Jesus died for us even while we were still sinners. It is knowing Christ's love for us that we joyously proclaim the name of Jesus.

Exodus 3:7-15
As Moses enters into God's presence, is surrounded by holiness, and witnesses a miraculous burning bush, God gives him a mission. After hearing this from God, Moses does something we may not have expected and hesitates. God shows us that we don't have to be perfect and have it all figured out to serve Him. Even in our hesitation, our imperfections, God can work! It's not about what we can do, but what he can do through us.

John 15:9-17
As we take time this Memorial Day to remember and honor those who gave their lives in service to this country, we cannot help but think of sacrifice. Jesus tells us that there is no greater love than one laying done their life for another. As we follow in Christ's example, we aim to show love to all, even sacrificial love.

2 Kings 22:10-14
As Josiah begins to repair the temple, the priest discovers a lost book, the Book of the Law. Josiah laments over the state of Israel and how the have not followed after God. Today as Christians we can know about Jesus but not really know Him. Taking time in His word is crucial to honoring Him and living a spiritual healthy life.

Just as Paul exhorts Timothy to continue training in Godliness and sharing the good news about Jesus, so does scripture exhort us. We are called to follow and learn about God as we live our lives for Him!

We are in this together. Being a part of the Church is being a family. We can build each other up in love. However, like all families, the Church is imperfect because it is made up of imperfect people. Scripture reminds us that while worries and stressors in life can and while abound, we do not have to worry. Habakkuk 1:1-5
Habakkuk, a prophet of God, calls out to God asking why evil seems to prevail and that justice is perverted. In today's world, it feels that not much has changed. We live in an unrighteous world surrounded by injustice and sin. Yet even in the darkest times, God is still working.

Philippians 4:b-9
Paul explains that even though he could be considered the best of the best in some circles, he counts it all as loss. He explains that nothing compares to Christ, and challenges us to give everything to Him.

As we come to a close on Jonah's story we read of how the prophet reacts to Nineveh repenting and being saved. While Jonah was ready to give up on Nineveh, God was not. Just as God gave compassion to Jonah as he saved him from drowning, so did God give compassion to the city of Nineveh. It is this compassion that God extends towards all of us.

Ezekiel 2:1-10
Ezekiel is a priest and a prophet in a foreign land trapped with no way home. God appears to Him in a vision and tells Ezekiel to share the Word of God with the rebellious Israelites. It is here in chapter two we see God call Ezekiel to be his prophet.

Join us as we read through the victory God gave David, a young man, over Goliath, a giant man who had an entire army cowering with fear. God shows that it is not about what we think we can't do, but what He can do through us!

Jesus warns all who will listen to be careful of judging others. Instead of harshly judging others, Jesus challenges to look inward at ourselves. As Christ followers we must understand that all are imperfect, and by helping each other we can grow closer to God and to each other.

Jonah is vomited on the shore with a second chance to preach to those in Nineveh. God delivers an impactful message through this reluctant prophet, as Nineveh repents for all the evil they have done. So we see a revival in the city of Nineveh.

1 Samuel 6:21-7:4 - Turn Back
As the Ark of the Covenant returns to the Israelites so do the Israelites return to God. Samuel calls for action from Israel to return to God and rid themselves of false gods and idols. Similar to Samuel's call to the Israelites, as we follow after God, we must rid our hearts of sinful desires and commit ourselves to God.

It is in the midst of calamity, nearing death, and sinking to his grave that a rebellious prophet cries out a God he once ran away from. Instead of Leaving Jonah to a fate he deserved, God used a most peculiar way, a fish, to save Jonah's life. It is there, inside a fish, grateful just to be alive that Jonah prays to God.

Just before Jesus begins His ministry He goes and spends forty days in the wilderness fasting and praying. It is there at the end of the forty days that the devil came and tempted Jesus. However, Jesus rebukes him with words of wisdom.

Baptism is an outward expression of an inward transformation. it is an external symbol of what's going on in the inside. You're not removing dirt from the body, but removing the contamination and impurity from the inside. You will no longer be held hostage by your sin. On Easter, we hear the news that Jesus, God's own son, was put in a grave, dead, and walked out alive. This is news of forgiveness, hope, joy, and eternal life.
Jesus was broken for us. So, the in our brokenness, that belief in Him, we could have a breakthrough. Our dirty souls can get clean. Our dry, dead bones come alive!

We've all heard the saying 'Keeping up with the Jones'. That is evermore true in this day of social media. It's tempting to want to show others only the good, esthetically pleasing parts of our lives. It's also easy to get swept up in the facade that others portray. What matters most is on the inside, though. Something or someone can be beautiful on the outside, but empty on the inside. God wants us to be full and complete...this starts by seeking Him and filling our insides with what is good and Holy.

In these verses, two blind men came to see Jesus. They knew that he was capable of healing them. When Jesus saw them He didn't assume to know what they wanted. He asked them what they wanted from him, even though it seemed obvious.

Jesus came to forgive, to correct our relationships with God and open our eyes to His power and presence in our lives...to give us new life! Strength, courage, power, joy, and victory no matter the situation or circumstance. First, we have to die. There is no celebration without an execution.

Paul, formerly Saul, was a bad dude. He was the meanest of the mean. He sought out and killed Christians...until God got ahold of him. When God got his hands on Saul, He changed him from the inside out. Saul turned away from every part of his old life. So much so, that he changed his name to Paul. He became the ultimate witness for Christ.
God can change your life the same way he changed Paul's. You have to let him. Will you let him?

On Tuesday of his last week, Jesus left it all on the field; teaching morning til night. Telling us the time to get right with God is now. Though we look for the right things, we often look for them in the wrong places.
Jesus is the WAY to the kingdom.
Jesus is the TRUTH of the kingdom.

It is important that we guard our hearts in all matters, including the kind of media we consume...TV, movies, social media, music, even books. What we consume will become normalized to us over time. What become normalized will eventually seep into our every day consciousness and will spill over into our relationships.
Paul teaches us quite plainly in Ephesians 4:29 that we are to build each other up according to what that person needs, for their benefit.
