You know that feeling when you’re trying to peel off a sticker? You can’t just grab it from the middle and pull. No, you have to get your fingernail underneath an edge but once you have it, you can gently remove it. This podcast is about getting an edge on the emotional issues all of us face. It’s casual, a little funny and filled with good advice that comes mostly from Brad Frank, a psychologist in Houston, but sometimes from Bobby Frank, a musician and writer in Nashville.
Hello again! Happy to be back with you!
On this episode, Bobby talks about an amazing experience he had at a gathering of handpan players in Colorado earlier this month. It's a story of transformation and authenticity we hope you enjoy.

A new listener to the podcast recently asked us about the music that's heard in the beginning and end of the podcast so we thought we'd discuss it. What you're hearing is the handpan played by Bobby frank. It's a weird and amazing instrument that blends rhythm, harmony and melody. You might encounter one at a soundbath or during meditation. It's a soothing sound that inspires relaxation, introspection and calm.
About halfway through this episode, you'll hear a 5 minute improvisation on handpan and percussion. This improv is performed on a handpan tuned to the Celtic D minor scale.

Continuing with the word of the year theme, we talk about depth as related to a story about a family-owned company that was part of our lives 40+ years ago. We land on a discussion of the word sonder, which according to the Internet is defined as: the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.

Happy New Year! It's with great anticipation that we unveil our words of the year. This is a tradition that started way back in 2023 on the Edge of the Sticker podcast, though it has much deeper roots than that. The WOTY is not a new year's resolution. It's more like a personal mission statement. Like setting an expectation or a standard for how we live our lives and the way we envision the year unfolding.
Did you pick a WOTY? Leave a comment or send us a message if you'd like to share.

Ours is a world of hyperbole, especially if you scroll through social media or turn on any 24-hour news channel. You'll likely hear about the greatest or the best, or maybe read about how somebody or something completely destroyed and decimated the competition. The frequency of this kind of exaggeration is no exaggeration. How do you respond to this kind of language? We discuss our reaction to it and talk about why it seems so much more prevalent than ever before.

This episode picks up where last week's left off. We discuss whether the disparity between our memories of our father's voice and the actual sound of it had any impact on our other memories of him and how his death provided us with perspective at an early age. We also talk about how that perspective and other challenges we all experience eventually become the fertilizer that allows our lives to grow in new ways.

This episode was recorded on Sunday March 12, the first day of 2023 daylight savings time. It's amazing how much a one hour time change can upset your daily routine. We talk about that, some of the things we discussed and learned during a react speaking event in Milwaukee, and think back to the Bugs Bunny episode Bugs' Bonnets (the one where each character's personality changes when different hats land on their heads.)
Next week we'll have a special guest join us on the podcast. Reggie D. Ford. Reggie is a motivational speaker and best selling author of PTSD: Perseverance Through Severe Dysfunction. The maestro Wayne Shorter passed away yesterday. He was a monumental musician, a masterful improvisor and a fixture on the jazz scene for more than half a century. Shorter was known for a free form of improvisation and a complete disregard for risk on the stage. He was fearless and brilliant.
I (Bobby) never saw him play, even though I had the chance a few years ago. It was a decision I regretted then and, even more so, now. His death promoted this discussion about allowing ourselves the opportunity to experience life, to break our routines and actually do the things we think about doing.
If you want to check out Wayne Shorter's music, take some time and listen to Speak No Evil, Juju or Without a Net. Also, check out the song Endangered Species off the Live at the Detroit Jazz Festival album. It won this year's Grammy for best improvised jazz solo.

Last weekend, Michigan defeated Ohio State in The Game. The rivalry stretches back more than a century and while Ohio State has dominated in recent times, Michigan has now won two times in a row. Jim Harbaugh, Michigan's coach, referred to the two teams as a couple of superheroes with different superpowers that bring out the best in each other. In this episode, we discuss how that applies to every day life, uniforms we all wear, and the opportunity to be authentic and connect with others instead of constantly focussing on conflict.

In this episode, Brad shares three strategies for managing the stress that sometimes happens around the holidays:
Manage Expectations – Remember why you’re celebrating and be realistic about what your get together will be like.
Try to avoid conflicts to the extent you can – before opening up a topic of discussion, ask yourself “do I need to say it? Do I need to say it now? And do I need to say it to these people.”
Embrace the season – spend a little bit of time acknowledging those things for which you’re grateful.
We hope you have a great Thanksgiving.

In this episode, we start with a quick recap of the World Series and the 2022 midterm elections. Brad shares a story about stress eating while watching the election returns which leads to a discussion about giving yourself some grace during stressful times. When you treat yourself compassionately and learn from your decisions, you're more likely to bounce and recover quickly. If you beat yourself with feeling of failure, you're more likely to experience a splat then a bounce.

In this episode, we discuss the idea of an emotional loan. Emotional loans happen when you hold onto things instead of dealing with them in real time. Maybe you weren't completely honest in your words or actions, or you agreed to something just to avoid a conflict. While your initial reaction might be "whew, I really dodged that bullet," over time you may start to feel angry, resentful or unhappy because of what happened days, weeks, months or years before. Those emotions are the interest on your loan and it can be really difficult to make the payments. Brad talks about why it's better to pay with cash, how to start the process of paying off your loans, and how to find help if you need some.
This is first of two parts. Part 2 will be posted next week.

In most relay races, it's usually the runner on the final leg who gets the most glory. That's the runner who crosses the finish line after either holding onto the lead built by the other runners or coming back from behind. In life, though, we spend most of our time running those middle legs...the ones that position us to be able to cross the finish line at some point in the future.
In this podcast, we talk about running the race, how imposter syndrome creeps into our lives, and how time and experience changes attitudes about success.

A conversation that starts with a knee replacement and winds its way through rural Indiana on the way to the Holocaust and politics. We touch on the forces that drive our perspectives and divide us before landing on the idea that our fundamental human kindness makes it hard to hate up close.
Whether it's boxes of old pictures, digital files, or the stuff that fills our drawers and closets, we all carry around a lot of stuff. Why is it important? What should we do with it? and what would George Carlin say?
In the episode, we talk about how we perceive ourselves and how we cobble together the story of our identities. We also discuss the way decisions are made, especially in the context of risk. Brad talks about the “20-minute rule,” which is the idea that even though many things that bring us pleasure or excitement – anything from drugs and sex to driving recklessly -- only last about 20 minutes, we do them even though they carry extraordinary risks that could impact the rest of our lives.
On this day 29 years, our father died suddenly. We talk about that day, the impact it had then and now, and how reactions to intense experiences fade as life continues.
We're together in the same room for this episode that we recorded just after a visit to the Loveless Cafe in Nashville. We talk about how important it is to indulge occasionally, even if it breaks a streak or fills your belly with things you don't normally eat. We also discuss motivation, behavior change and how taking risks can enrich relationships and life.
In this episode, we discuss how important it is to just get started -- whether its on a business idea or working through tough times in your life. We talk about playing music, baseball, finding the flow and gaining perspective on where your are and what you'd like to accomplish.
In this episode, we discuss the lottery and the fantasies that might run through your mind as you buy the winning ticket.
Tonight's Mega Millions jackpot is worth more than $1B, a colossal amount of money that is beyond comprehension. But that $2 entry fee gets you in the arena and allows you to dream, at least for a little while, about how life will change after you've deposited the check. It doesn't take a billion dollars to change your life, though, and whether or not you win the jackpot, you can still control a lot of the same things that the money would enable you to do.

In this episode we talk about a concept discussed in the book. There is a chapter titled “What race are you running” that focuses on defining priorities and taking the steps necessary to get where you want go. We talk about how a marathon runner follows a specific training program to develop the endurance necessary to compete over 26 miles while a sprinter trains in a very different way to build explosive power out of the starting blocks.
In ordinary life, though, there is often a desire to have it all and to do it all. It’s hard to say no to anything, especially if you’re not entirely sure what you want out of life. A lot of people say they simply want to be happy, but they spend a lot of time pursuing things that don’t necessarily get them closer to actually being happy. They might be chasing money, or status or a whole variety of other things, but they never seriously consider how to define their race or figure out how to eliminate the distractions or the life pressures that take their attention away from the ultimate goal.
Brad offers some practical advice on how to gain perspective and break down seemingly insurmountable tasks into manageable pieces.
In this episode, we discuss how this podcast originated along with some background on Brad, Bobby and the concept that led us down this path.
This podcast offers a preview of our book The Edge of the Sticker, which will be released in Fall 2022. Please follow us on social media. We are @theedgeofthesticker everywhere.
In this episode, Brad and I talk about dealing with trauma. The topic has been in the news a lot over the past few weeks with a string of shootings in Uvalde, Buffalo and most recently during the 4th of July parade in Highland Park. Brad discusses the impact these traumatic events have on people who were there but also on all of us who have seen the news. He also talks about his experience working with children in the foster care system and how central trauma is to their experience. Finally, we’ll talk through ways to recognize and minimize the effects, and some coping strategies to help you handle trauma in your life.
The Supreme Court's decision in the Dobbs case has triggered a profound reaction of anger, fear and concern over the direction of the country with deeply personal implications. Dr. Frank discusses how people are reacting and provides ideas on how to cope with the emotions you may be feeling.
In this podcast, Brad Frank discusses reactions to the recent Supreme Court decision in the Dobbs case that overturned Roe V. Wade. There is pervasive anger and fear over what the ruling means for women and how the ruling sets the stage for stripping other rights in the US. A surprising number of people are feeling that the US may not be a safe place to live and they are taking steps to learn about the process of moving to Canada or countries in the EU. The once-flippant comment “I’m just going to move to Canada” is now a very real possibility as concerns mount over how long the window will be open before relocating is not an option.
Dr. Frank also discusses how similar the anxiety, pain and anger triggered by the Dobbs case are to relationship issues many people face. In long-term relationships, one or both partners sometimes feel like the relationship is not providing what they expected or want. They feel like the promise of love or compassion should have been in the relationship forever but eventually find themselves crosswise with their partner. It requires a willingness to reorient and take action to reset. The same is true of the political landscape in the US today – it requires action, thoughtful consideration and an informed perspective on available options. Whether it is a marriage or a reaction to the news, you have two real options – retreat inwards and hold the emotions inside or reach out for help.
