Can grief be a lifelong journey rather than something to "get over"? Join me as we explore this profound question through the courageous stories of individuals who have faced the depths of loss with remarkable strength. Grief transforms over time and how love continues to inspire and shape our lives even after those we cherish are gone. The importance of integrating the memory of loved ones into our daily routines will allow their legacy to bring us strength and inspiration.

"Navigating Grief and Finding Grace" reminds us of the importance of processing emotions at our own pace, taking necessary breaks, and seeking support. The enduring power of love as a comforting force, helping to keep the memory of our loved ones alive in new and meaningful ways. By embracing a non-linear path of grief with self-compassion and gentleness, we honor the unique spirits of those we've lost and find moments of joy amidst the sadness. Let's celebrate the legacy of loved ones and let their memory continue to shape and inspire our lives.

Confronting the shadows of self-doubt and discrimination has been a personal battle, yet one that I've learned can pave the way to empowerment. My journey, marked by these struggles, serves as the backdrop for an honest conversation about turning insecurities into strengths. This Mental Health Awareness Month, we get real about the roots of our insecurities and how embracing them can be our stepping stone to resilience and self-awareness. Inspired by the likes of David Goggins, we tackle the enduring impact of childhood criticisms and societal pressures, and the transformative potential of facing adversity with courage.

Ever woken up feeling like an imposter, despite your glaring successes? This episode delves into the minds of insecure overachievers, unmasking the internal critics that drive us to question our worth. Walking this path means dismantling the psychological barriers we've erected over years, finding authenticity in our self-expression, and seizing growth opportunities with both hands. We're not just talking about leaning into our strengths; we're talking about confronting fears and fortifying our weaknesses, guided by the remarkable example set by David Goggins.

Our final thoughts revolve around the commitment to mastering what once made us feel small - our insecurities. Honesty, confronting doubts, and extending compassion not only to others but also to ourselves become our guiding principles. The Cherokee tale of the two wolves serves as a poignant metaphor for the daily choices that forge our destiny. I remind listeners that support is available and extend an invitation to continue this vital dialogue within our Mind Manners Podcast Community on Facebook. Embrace this episode as a call to rediscover your potential and turn it into your superpower.

Every step, every breath, every movement holds a tale of our past, especially when that past includes trauma. Join me, Albert, on Mind Manners, where we navigate the deeply interwoven connections between our bodies and our healing journeys. It's a profound exploration that promises insights into how our bodies remember what our minds might wish to forget—and how this embodied memory can become both a challenge and a key ally in our path to recovery. Together, we'll confront the reality that healing isn't about returning to who we once were, but about embracing growth and redefinition after trauma.

This episode is a heartfelt testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of movement. With every story shared and every strategy discussed, we celebrate the catharsis and empowerment that come from reconnecting with our bodies through physical expression. Whether it's the grace of dance or the discipline of martial arts, we examine how these activities allow for a non-verbal release that's often essential for those who find words insufficient. So tune in, and let's embark on a journey to reclaim the sanctuary within ourselves, using our body's wisdom as a compass towards healing and autonomy.

"Love multiplies," Zack expressed about each child born. When the first cries of each newborn echoed in the delivery room, a tidal wave of emotions crashed over Zack Byman — he was a father once again. The journey from partner to parent is a profound one, and in this heartfelt episode, Zack takes you through the highs, the lows, and the unscripted moments of laughter that make up fatherhood. From the gripping fear of the unknown to the elation of holding my child for the first time, he shares with you not just stories, but the lessons learned about love's capacity to expand with each new addition to the family.

Balancing a bustling household and a thriving marital relationship is no small feat. He tackles the realities of daily life in a large family, where sacrifice becomes as routine as the morning alarm, and love is the thread that weaves through each interaction, multiplying rather than dividing. Zack gets personal about the push and pull between selflessness and the need for personal space, revealing how these dynamics are navigated and how we make room for what matters most—our relationships, our time, and our growth as parents.

Lastly, we confront the evolving landscape of masculinity and the emotional development of both ourselves and our children. It's a candid discussion on the pressures men face and the importance of breaking free from the mold to foster emotional complexity. By setting an example of love and vulnerability, we discuss how fathers can shape their children's expectations and understanding of manhood, and the integral conversations that need to happen during adolescence.

Join me in unpacking these nuanced aspects of modern parenting, and perhaps find a reflection of your own experiences in this episode dedicated to dads everywhere.

In today's session, we're talking about flow and focus.

There are no shortage of distractions and stimuli in our daily lives – our attention is constantly pulled in multiple directions. Everything and anything are competing and demanding for our attention in any given moment.

When was the last time you were performing a task or activity where you felt fully immersed, invigorated with razor sharp focus and discipline, almost impenetrable by any outside noise or distractions? While not always intentional or deliberate, we’ve all experienced this at one point or another in our lives. Sometimes we call it, “being in the zone.” What if I told you that you can induce this level of focus? That you can train and control your ability to be in the zone? In positive psychology, this is referred to as the FLOW STATE.

A mind that is trained to be more present and at ease with itself — calmer, clearer, and content — is more likely to experience increased life satisfaction, confidence, creativity and overall quality of life. Having more flow will infuse your daily life with more intent and purpose – to have a design for how you choose to live and a meaning for your way of life.

Fear and doubt has the capacity to stop us from exploring life, taking chances, and tapping into our authentic selves. We live in a society filled with noise and messages that drowns out our inner voice. We choose a path out of fear disguised as practicality - and live unfulfilled lives that we try so hard to convince ourselves is the right choice.

And we look at what we really want as something impossible, so we never dare to step beyond the status quo to work towards it. We think we need to a have it all figured out to really do anything. But that's not entirely true. This is a limiting belief that imprisons us from letting our light shine brighter.

Here is a beautiful quote from the movie, Coach Carter, which is essentially a version of the Marianne Williamson’s poem that I think speaks to what this session is about:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. You playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

The habit of people pleasing often comes with a psychological power struggle between internal identity crisis and a shaky core sense of self. Somewhere along the way you got the message that your self-worth is tied to external validation - a job, a grade, a car, a shoe, a group of people - all of which adds to the incentive of pleasing others.

At the core of it all – we all have a deep desire and want to be loved and accepted – it’s a basic human need. But when our identity and sense of self-worth are heavily reliant on external factors, we can lose our identity in the process - as we move farther and farther away from what we actually know of ourselves. We subconsciously condition ourselves to care so much about the opinion of others that we lose our voice in all that noise.

Remember that quote by Dr. Seuss – “Be who you are and say what you feel, BECAUSE those who mind DON’T matter and THOSE who MATTER don’t MIND.”

Let's get back to you! And let's talk about this!

Anxiety and depression impacts everyone.

They come and go, like the waves of the ocean. We can't stop these waves – but we can learn to become better surfers to learn how to ride the waves of these emotional states of mind and learn how to reduce and decrease the symptoms so that they’re not incredibly impairing us from living our lives.

Some days, we’re going to be hit by a huge wave or tsunami of emotions. You’re not going to win all your battles – some days, you need to break down, hold space for that, and allow yourself to grieve. But, when you can help it, having useful tools you can engage in to move the needle in the right direction can act as your true north during times when you feel lost and not sure what to do.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is a well-researched method that is highly effective in treating many different mental health problems. This method focuses on how we think, feel and behave – and how these three elements interact with each other to impact our quality of life. In CBT practice, there is a huge emphasis on how we think – and that our thoughts is one of the main culprits that can either increase or decrease depressive or anxious symptoms.

So, join me in this session, as I walk you through a specific form of CBT I use in session with patients.

You are about to listen in on a very special, one of a kind, conversation between myself and a colleague of mine. This episode marks the start of a very special series that I been wanting, where I meet with passionate people working in the field of mental health. My hope is to demystify who we are and put a face to the people that are working behind the scenes that are truly making the world a better place.

To kick off this first episode in the series, my guest is someone I have known for as long as I have been in this field. This amazing individual was born and raised in Mexico, from which he then immigrated to the United States. In the US, he had to overcome the struggles and barriers that comes from being an immigrant – from language barriers and cultural assimilation – all of which infuses him with a depth and wealth of knowledge and lived experiences that he harnesses to drive his mission in becoming an agent of hope and change.

I have had the opportunity to work alongside this individual on several projects that are deeply heart-driven and mission-driven. He continues to grow and develop himself – his output and bandwidth is nothing short of amazing - he is a leader at heart and I am proud to call him a friend. Please help me in welcoming to the show: Enrique Ruiz.

Mindfulness is simple – and simplicity is key to a better life.

We, as human beings, tend to make things complicated. Mindfulness is a way for us to come back to NOW - back to simplicity.

Confucious said “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated”

I started learning about mindfulness during a time when it was often made fun of - mindfulness was not socially "normal." Now, however, it is widely accepted and encouraged for all ages. Thanks to science and mainstream media, mindfulness is more and more commonplace.

So what's the problem? Why are we still not integrating it into our lives and basking in all of the benefits that comes from practicing mindfulness? Just like exercise and healthy eating, we know it's good for us, but we still struggle to beat the impulse of living in the comfort zones.

To be here in the moment and to be aware and be present takes practice.

Let's explore this!

In advocacy of suicide prevention, this is a personal spoken word message to individuals contemplating suicide or struggling with suicide.

Suicide is a painful, sensitive and touchy subject. We have all been affected by it, whether we have considered suicide ourselves or know someone who has. If you or someone you know are considering ending their lives could listen to this message, my hope is for you or them to see and feel the love people have for them and the implications of their choice.

We all need a sign and symbol of hope. Let's stand together and be that sign - that we will NOT standby in the presence of suicide - this painful reality affects us all. Let's fight to express concern, love, and hope for humanity. Let's keep raising awareness around suicide and suicide prevention. Let's be brave for those that needs us most.

Let's LIVE.

Help is all around us - reach out for help for yourself or for those you care about. You are not alone in this fight!

Confidence comes from within. Many people think that confidence comes from success, but that’s not true – it’s not success that creates confidence, it’s confidence that creates success.

Most self-doubt are not actually coming from you – they’re not coming from your logic, intelligence or conscious mind – they’re also not coming from your current outside world or information about the future. They are simply based on an automatic process in your brain that’s been put there through the lessons you learned as a child. And it’s a system that needs to be updated periodically like a computer program.

In this session, we go over information and practical exercises to help you change and improve the thoughts and emotions that might be holding you back, so that you can participate more fully, both professionally and privately, in the world around you.

We cover topics around our comfort zones and growth zones and show you how to create your own growth zone exercises. I'll discusses how to deal with and remove self-doubt as they may interfere with your growth.

I often refer to anger as a masking emotion – it’s a disguise for fear. As someone who struggle with anger issues myself and helping many others, I learned that the most intense and angry people are often the most afraid. We’re afraid of losing, failing, getting rejected, or getting hurt. Anger is a defensive and protective emotion - and it can also be a deterrence from the deeper emotions of pain.

Healing and recovering requires us to move pass it so that we can get to the core of the issue.

We cannot make peace with ourselves if we avoid these difficult emotions - this leads to inner conflicts of overwhelm or feelings of shame. By bottling up our emotions, we eventually blow up when we can no longer contain the frustration.

In this session, I want to give you some tools that will help you use your anger in productive ways for personal growth rather than for self-destruction and chaos in your life.

What is depression?

What is the difference between depression and just everyday feelings of sadness or being upset?

Depression is challenging to understand because it's pretty much invisible and can only be detected by thoughts, behaviors, and feelings. As a result, we can be struggling with it for weeks, months and even years with ever knowing -- it takes on many disguises.

In this session, we talk about the common symptoms around depression and some quick tips on helping yourself address the problem.

Everyone experiences anxiety. It's NORMAL. Anxiety can be helpful as it serves to alert us to potential threats, protect us from danger and help us reach important goals. For example, it’s normal to feel anxious when encountering a wild animal on a hike or before an important job interview.
The experience of anxiety is not dangerous. Yes, anxiety feels uncomfortable - but it cannot hurt you. It's a temporary feeling that decreases as it goes.

In this session, we go over some of the common symptoms and how anxiety works. Anxiety can be adaptive, yet it can also become a problem if you allow it. The sensations we experience when anxious are evolutionarily designed as part of our body’s natural response mechanism that help us get into gear when faced with danger and to “calm down” when the threat has passed.

If you are someone who constantly feel anxious or worried, the common behavior that creates problems is avoidance.

Anxiety is part of life. We can't eliminate it from our lives. We need it. The goal is to accept anxiety, work with it, and continue to live your life anyway! So let's learn more about it!

In this session, we break down self-care. Self-care is all about practicing the highest form of self-love through disciplined and thoughtful examination of one’s needs, priorities, and values. Many of us are not as good at caring for themselves as they think.

But study after study shows that caregivers who do not practice self-care are not only causing damage to themselves, but also the person they are caring for.

In other words: No one wins and everyone suffers when you ignore your own personal overall health needs.
